Top: Alumni are keeping the Rashi connection strong by attending events at the school. TIKKUN ALUMS This year Rashi inaugurated the “Tikkun Alum” award, given to alumni who have demonstrated a strong commitment to social justice in their post-Rashi careers. The 2012 Tikkun Alums, both members of the Class of 2002, are Noah Hodgetts and Aviva Rosman (pictured at right). Since graduating from college, Noah has worked on several renewable energy projects, This fall he begins a Master’s Program in Urban and Regional Policy at Northeastern University with the goal of “making our cities and surrounding regions more sustainable economically, environmentally, and socially for all.” “Without the social justice education rooted in Jewish values that I received at Rashi, I would not be living a life dedicated to repairing the world and social justice today,” Noah stated. “At Rashi I learned that our world is broken, and we have a responsibility to make the world whole again,” Aviva said. “In college, Noah Hodgetts Aviva Rosman I learned about one of the most significant manifestations of brokenness in the U.S.: educational inequity, the disparity between the educational outcomes of rich and poor.” Aviva teaches at a charter school in Chicago and does community service with her students. Her aim is for her students to graduate and enroll in college and she sees her future as working with communities to improve students’ futures. “I learned at Rashi that it is only as a community that we can work to make the world whole,” Aviva stated. 11 | The Rashi School
Rashi reminds me of the sky. The clouds are our teachers, friends and peers. As we move to the next stages of our lives, we’ll still have the stars – our Rashi brothers and sisters – to be there for us and guide us. Rashi is the most amazing community to which I’ve ever been exposed. Just as the sky can seem endless, so is the Rashi connection.
