Community Outreach<br />

Entergy <strong>Nuclear</strong> and Entergy<br />

Mississippi, Inc. have been named<br />

recipients of a national award recognizing<br />

their economic and community<br />

development efforts in Port Gibson and<br />

Claiborne County, Mississippi.<br />

The 2010 Communitas Award<br />

for Leadership in Community Service<br />

recognizes recent targeted efforts by<br />

Entergy to improve relations and boost<br />

the community near Grand Gulf <strong>Nuclear</strong><br />

Station.<br />

and employee support of area arts and<br />

service organizations, launch of the<br />

Nuke 101<br />

Exelon’s Braidwood Generating<br />

Station in Illinois held its first Nuke 101<br />

class on April 10, 2010. The course was<br />

for teachers to learn about nuclear energy<br />

and nuclear technology so that they can<br />

educate their students. During the six<br />

hours, teachers learned about the history<br />

of nuclear power plants, did in class lab<br />

activities and toured the nuclear power<br />

plant. The class was ran by members of<br />

the North American-Young Generation<br />

<strong>Nuclear</strong>.<br />

Uranium<br />

A new IAEA service for promotion<br />

of best practices and safety in the uranium<br />

production cycle, Uranium Production<br />

Site Appraisal Team (UPSAT) has<br />

been introduced as the uranium production<br />

industry continues to expand worldwide.<br />

This service is available on request<br />

and on a cost recovery basis to any Member<br />

State at any facility that is operating<br />

a uranium production cycle (UPC). UPC<br />

covers prospecting, exploration, development,<br />

feasibility studies, mining, processing,<br />

remediation and decommissioning<br />

and stewardship in relation to uranium<br />

mineral resources.<br />

Agreement<br />

On April 9, 2010 the Chubu Electric<br />

Power Co., Japan concluded a cooperation<br />

agreement with the Japan Atomic <strong>Energy</strong><br />

Agency (JAEA) regarding exchanges of<br />

information on decommissioning technology.<br />

Such cooperation will contribute<br />

to ensuring safety in the decommissioning<br />

of the Hamaoka-1 and -2 nuclear power<br />

plants (NPPs), which the utility has been<br />

working on since last fall, 2009.<br />

JAEA has been engaged in decommissioning<br />

its advanced thermal reactor<br />

(ATR) Fugen since 2008. The concluded<br />

agreement is aimed at facilitating mutual<br />

utilization of the lessons learned through<br />

the experiences of both parties.<br />

Clean <strong>Energy</strong> Park<br />

AREVA and Fresno <strong>Nuclear</strong> <strong>Energy</strong><br />

Group (FNEG) announced that they have<br />

signed a memorandum of understanding<br />

(MOU) to develop a Clean <strong>Energy</strong> Park<br />

near Fresno, California, including nuclear<br />

and renewable generation.<br />

According to the MOU, AREVA<br />

and FNEG will work together on the<br />

site selection and initial development of<br />

a nominal 1,600 Megawatt U.S. EPR<br />

reactor.<br />

I&C<br />

A consortium comprising AREVA<br />

and Siemens <strong>Energy</strong> will supply digital<br />

supervision, protection and control (I&C)<br />

systems for units 3 & 4 of the Mochovce<br />

nuclear power plant in Slovakia. Slovenské<br />

Elektrárne, a subsidiary of the Enel<br />

Group, is completing the construction of<br />

two reactors based on VVER (Pressurized<br />

Water Cooled and Water Moderated)<br />

technology.<br />

The new power plant units will be<br />

equipped with TELEPERM XS safety<br />

I&C supplied by AREVA and SPPA-<br />

T2000 operational I&C from Siemens.<br />

Unit 3 is scheduled to be operational by<br />

the end of 2012, whereas unit 4 will be<br />

online in 2013.<br />

The Babcock & Wilcox Company<br />

(B&W) announced that it is combining<br />

two of its business units into a single<br />

organization to accelerate its growth in<br />

the commercial nuclear power sector.<br />

Babcock & Wilcox <strong>Nuclear</strong> <strong>Energy</strong>, Inc.<br />

will be formed through the combination<br />

of B&W <strong>Nuclear</strong> Power Generation<br />

Group, Inc. and B&W Modular <strong>Nuclear</strong><br />
