N-Stamp Certification<br />

The Babcock & Wilcox Company’s<br />

(B&W) commercial nuclear operations<br />

have received additional American Society<br />

of Mechanical Engineers (ASME)<br />

N-Stamp certifications. The certifications<br />

are considered the industry standard for<br />

quality assurance of materials, design,<br />

construction, operation, inspection and<br />

continuing maintenance of nuclear facilities.<br />

B&W staff at the company’s locations<br />

in Barberton, Ohio, and Lynchburg,<br />

Virginia, completed the audit necessary<br />

to earn the certifications from ASME<br />

and the National Board of Boiler and<br />

Pressure Vessel Inspectors in December<br />

2009. The ASME N, NA, NPT, NS and<br />

MO Certificates of Authorization, along<br />

with the National Board’s NR Certificate<br />

of Authorization, were formally received<br />

in March 2010.<br />

<strong>New</strong> Technology<br />

With energy companies worldwide<br />

seeking new technologies to improve the<br />

operational reliability of their nuclear<br />

power plants, GE Hitachi <strong>Nuclear</strong><br />

<strong>Energy</strong> (GEH) announced the first U.S.<br />

deployment of its new Marathon Ultra<br />

control rod blade (CRB) technology.<br />

Exelon <strong>Nuclear</strong> installed GEH’s<br />

Marathon Ultra CRBs at its Peach Bottom<br />

Atomic Power <strong>Plant</strong> in Pennsylvania. The<br />

power station generates more than 2,200<br />

megawatts of safe, low-carbon electricity,<br />

enough to power more than 2 million<br />

homes.<br />

Spent Fuel Racks<br />

The People’s Republic of China has<br />

ordered spent fuel racks for six of the<br />

country’s new (domestically developed)<br />

CPR-1000 reactor units, namely, the<br />

Ningde NPP Units 3 & 4, Yangjiang NPP<br />

Units 3 & 4, and Fangchenggang NPP<br />

Units 1&2. This award brings the total<br />

number of Chinese reactors that have<br />

adopted Holtec’s wet storage technology<br />

to 18.<br />

Technology Alliance<br />

ROS (Remote Ocean Systems) and<br />

Westinghouse’s BWR Services Group<br />

announced the formation of a strategic<br />

alliance for developing new technology<br />

with the ultimate goal to reduce costs<br />

and outage duration during the BWR<br />

refueling process.<br />

MoU<br />

Larsen & Toubro Limited (L&T),<br />

India and Rolls-Royce have signed a<br />

Memorandum of Understanding (MoU)<br />

for cooperation to effectively address the<br />

projected need for light water reactors<br />

(LWR) in India and internationally. LWR<br />

technology is in use in over sixty per<br />

cent of nuclear power plants operating<br />

worldwide.<br />

The two companies have agreed to<br />

collaborate on areas including nuclear<br />

instrumentation and controls, engineered<br />

products and systems, reactor components,<br />

engineering services, in-service reactor<br />

support and waste management.<br />

The cooperation with L&T for<br />

instrumentation and controls will form the<br />

first operational phase of this relationship<br />

to bridge the gap in the existing supply<br />

chain in support of India’s ambitious new<br />

build program.<br />

Joint Venture<br />

Toshiba Corporation and Westinghouse<br />

Electric Company, LLC announced<br />

the formation of a new joint venture, Advance<br />

Uranium Asset Management Ltd.<br />

(AUAM) that will strengthen Toshiba<br />

Group’s capabilities in the nuclear front<br />

end business segments and enhance the<br />

extensive range of support services extended<br />

to utilities around the world.<br />

United Kingdom based AUAM will<br />

undertake uranium related transactions in<br />

the front end of the nuclear fuel cycle. The<br />

company is 60 percent owned by Toshiba<br />

and 40 percent by Westinghouse.<br />

Turbine Parts<br />

Toshiba Corporation and IHI<br />

Corporation announced that they have<br />

signed a memorandum of understanding<br />

(MOU) on the formation of a joint venture<br />

to manufacture steam turbine parts for<br />

nuclear power plants for the domestic<br />

and overseas markets. This move reflects<br />

expanding global demand for new<br />

nuclear power plants and maintenance<br />

services for installed equipment, and<br />

will allow the companies to promote<br />

best use of management resources in a<br />

collaborative framework that enhances<br />

competitiveness.<br />

R&T Unit<br />

In response to the unprecedented,<br />

growing demand for clean, secure energy<br />

Transfer of Ownership<br />

Westinghouse Electric Company<br />

confirmed that it will commence<br />

innovative new commercial arrangements<br />

with the <strong>Nuclear</strong> Decommissioning<br />

Authority (NDA) involving the longterm<br />

lease of the Springfields nuclear<br />

fuel manufacturing site, near Preston in<br />

Lancashire.<br />

The deal includes the permanent<br />

transfer of ownership to Westinghouse of<br />

Springfields Fuels Limited (SFL). SFL, is<br />

the company currently operating the site<br />

under the management of Westinghouse<br />

Electric UK Holdings Limited.<br />
