Since our last issue there has been plenty of
excing blues acvity in our region. The
Marchwood Blues Picnic went off very well, and a
lot of fun was had by all who aended.
Congratulaons to Peter and Carol Archer for a
very well organised event. Those of you who
journeyed up to Okoroire for the blues social
with the Hamilton Club had a fantasc day, too.
Four or five acts from each club played through a
sweltering Sunday aernoon, pictures and a full
report are in this issue.
Our first themed jam night was a success, with
more musicians than non‐musicians in the bar! Every act played at least one
song associated with ‘Muddy Waters’ and some played all three in their set.
Our thanks to all those who put the me in to learn a new song or two, it
certainly put the "blues" back into our regular club night. Special thanks to
the judges, Graham Clark and Derek Jacombs, and congratulaons to the
band that took away the $100 RockShop voucher. B‐Side Band from
Tauranga won with their earthy performance of "Tiger in Your Tank", a
lesser known song by Muddy, played in keeping with the way Muddy would
have liked it.
Talking of themed nights, we are going to repeat this event every few
months and the next one will be on the 29th May (the opening night of the
Rotorua Blues Fesval) when the theme will be ‘Willie Dixon’ For
background reading there are a couple of arcles in this issue, as well as a
link to a list of his most covered songs. Read through the list of famous acts
who have recorded songs by ‘Willie Dixon’, it's impressive. You have a few
weeks to pracce up for the next themed night.
We are grateful to the sponsors who support BOP Blues Club. Our thanks go
to the RockShop who donated many of the spot prizes and musicians who
donated CDs for parcipang acts at the first themed jam night. We are
now very excited to announce that we have been offered a significant
sponsorship deal by The Sound, which is proving to be a very popular radio
staon. They have partnered with us to promote our annual fesval at
Queen's Birthday weekend and other events throughout the year. It's great
to have them on board.
The fesval planning is now well advanced and shaping up well. Our
headline act is Jimi Hocking from Melbourne. Jimi is an excing player, both
as a solo arst and with a full band. Expect to see some fireworks from this
well travelled and dynamic performer. We have had magnificent help from
yet another sponsor, House of Travel, who have provided Jimi's return
airfare. Rotorua Trust has supported us every year and is once again our
major funding sponsor, with addional support from First Sovereign Trust
and others. All sponsors are shown on the poster on page 4.
So dig out that old vinyl and see if you can find some covers of Willie Dixon ‐
I'll bet you have a few ... and if you're too young to remember vinyl, just hop
on to YouTube and slip "Willie Dixon" into the search box.
Keep on digging the blues!
Blues Legend – Muddy Waters (1913‐ 1983)
Muddy Waters was an American blues musician,
singer‐songwriter, and a major player in the
field of electric Chicago blues. He transformed
the soul of the rural south into the sound of the
city. He had a significant impact on many arsts
who followed including The Rolling Stones, Eric
Clapton, The Allman Brothers and Led Zepplin.
Muddy had hits with ‘Hoochie Coochie Man’, ‘I
Just Wanna Make Love To You’, and many more.
Born in Mississippi, he was a contemporary of
Robert Johnson and Son House and played their
style of Delta blues.
In 1940 he travelled to Chicago, for the first
me, returning aer a year of playing as a
sideman, to run a juke joint. His early style was
recorded by Alan Lomax (Liberty of Congress)
before he returned to Chicago in 1943, opening
for Big Bill Broonzy. In ‘45 he got his first electric
guitar and by 1948 he was recording for Chess,
giving them hit records.
In the ‘50s he was king of the Chicago blues
scene. In 1958 he went to England and
impressed the audiences with his loud amplified
electric guitar and thunderous beat. In ‘67 he joined up with Bo Diddley, Lile Walter & Howlin’ Wolf
to record two albums.
In 1972 he went back to England, recording with many top musicians of the day. By the mid ‘70s ,
aer performing at The Band’s farewell concert ‘The Last Waltz’, he started working with Johnny
Winter, who produced a Grammy winning album for Muddy. He connued to play live with his band
into the ‘80s and record albums that turned out to be his biggest selling ever, but his health was
starng to slow him down. He died aged 70 in 1983.
He was inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame in 1980 and the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame in 1987. In
1992 he received a (posthumous) Grammy Lifeme Achievement Award. In 1994 he appeared on a
US postage stamp. Muddy’s recordings of ‘Mannish Boy’ and ‘Rollin’ Stone’ were part of four of his
songs voted onto the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame’s list of 500 songs that shaped R‘n’R.
Well, it’s eight weeks to go unl Queen’s Birthday weekend and the 7 th Rotorua Blues Fesval.
Jimi ’the human’ Hocking has been a familiar sight to Australian audiences for
many years.
Along with the gold records he collected with the ‘Screaming Jets’ in the
1990’s, Jimi has also released a large body of solo work (13 albums), from
electric rock and blues, to contemporary folk and even blues mandolin.
In 2005 Jimi won the presgious
‘Internaonal Blues Challenge’ in Memphis USA, and toured the US extensively.
In 2008 he was pronounced the ‘VicTas Male blues arst of the year’ and also
‘Producer of 2008’ for his work on his album ‘Blue Mandolin’.
In 2009 Jimi was invited to Kathmandu to perform at the ‘Himalayan Blues
fesval’
In 2010 Jimi rejoined ‘The Screaming Jets’ to perform lead guitar dues, the ‘Jets’
then went on to join ‘Status Quo’ for their Australian tour.
Also in 2010 his solo album ‘Electric Mojo Machine’ won ‘best album’ and ‘best
band’ at the MBAS VIC/TAS blues awards.
In the 1980’s Jimi stepped out of his ‘Zappa’ inspired electric 3 piece, and the
folk cafés of Melbourne to join rock legends ‘The Angels’ on their ‘Live Line’
tour when Bob Spencer was injured.
He went on to form ‘Jimi the Human & Spectre 7’ and his album ‘No Turning
Back’ hit the charts in 1990. In ’93 he joined ‘The Screaming Jets’ but sll
connued to record and perform as a soloist on the side.
In the late 90’s Jimi parted from the Jets to pursue his love of the Blues, and
achieved many awards along the way, including ‘CAV‐Best Acousc
performer’, ‘MBAS 2003 Male Blues Arst of the Year’, and ‘MBAS 2004 Blues
Performer of the Year’.
Jimi took his ‘Blues Machine’ back to perform in Kathmandu and India in 2011.
This was followed by his 2012 electric live album hing # 5 on the Australian Blues
airplay charts – ‘LIVE: in the moment’
More recently, Jimi has been working on a new album featuring acousc guitar &
mandolin.
Cruising with Joel, award‐winning Canadian guitarist
One Rotorua show ‐ Saturday 20 April
Lakeland Queen – 7.00pm – 9.00 pm
The BOP Blues Club and Lakeland Queen are thrilled to present a fantasc opportunity to get two events for the
price of one; an evening cruise on Rotorua's iconic paddle steamer plus an inmate, not‐to‐be‐missed performance
by Canadian singer songwriter Joel Fafard.
An award‐winning guitarist in his home country, Canada, Fafard performs Southern roots and blues classics with
the soul of a purist and the showmanship of a seasoned entertainer. He sings with the sexy, sandpapered‐sounding
vocal style of the new‐generaon bluesman and tells hilarious between‐song stories with the confidence of a late
show host delivering his monologue. When he lets rip a solo on his resonator guitar, it’s easy to hear how he once
earned both a Juno nominaon and a Western Canadian Music Award for his skills on the guitar.
Drinks and light snacks will be available on the Lakeland Queen during the show.
B‐SIDE BAND
Alyana Powley
The B Side Band were the house band for the night, opening the show with a dynamic set.
A wide variety of performers played, and it was good to have strong female vocalists, notably
Alayna Powley who has a fantasc voice, performing both solo and accompanied by her father,
Rob Powley.
Young Leigham Dender was accompanied by his parents. This young student of the drum kit
showed neither nerves or apprehension, and displayed a high level of skill in his showcase
number.
Jamming with Mike Garner were B‐SIDE BAND'S Mike Kirk and bassist Chris Duff, along with
club MC Warren Houston, covering three Muddy waters songs, previewing the Muddy Waters
theme night planned for the March Club Night.
Lindsay MacKenzie had his fine electric band belng out the
grooves and is always a crowd pleaser.
March Club Night was a terrific success, a theme night where all acts were asked to play at least one song of
their alloed three as either wrien or recorded by our featured Bluesman
of the night ...Muddy Waters!!!
And all acts did just that, most played 2 or 3 "Muddy songs", and the
wonderful thing was all acts had put me into research and pracse, so for
the first me on a club night the enre night’s entertainment was True
Blues!!!!
Our Club Constuon states that as a Blues Club and we
will promote the playing of blues music, but we didn't want
to be seen as " The Blues Police" so it was a great way of
encouraging the performance of real blues.
Judges—Derek Jacombs and Graham Clark
Lloyd, Warren and Chris
I was chuffed that so many Musos there were supporve
in their comments of the evening and most asked for it to
happen again.
Thanks to all who put me into their sets, it was really
appreciated by the larger number of Musos. I was chuffed
that so many musos told me on the night they had really Winners— B‐Side Band
enjoyed pung their sets together and that they hadn't
realised how many modern songs came from "real blues songs"
I look forward to many more nights of Real Blues!!
Club Night Theme
29 May 2013
Featuring ‐ songs wrien
by Willie Dixon
Willie Dixon was the "A&R" man for Chess
Studios in the heyday of Chicago blues. He
talent spoed for the Chess Brothers, finding
almost all their big name acts, that's the "A"
part, "Arsts" and he wrote a great many
songs, that's the "R" bit, "repertoire". So all of
the acts he introduced played at least some of
his songs, Muddy Waters, Howling Wolf,
Buddy Guy, Bo Diddley, Lile Walter, Os
Rush, Koko Taylor, Ea James, and many
others.
Over on the other side of the Atlanc, the young Brit musicians geng into the blues learned the same
songs off record, and when they got big enough to travel Stateside and play, and pay homage to the
Chess Studios, he pestered them into recording his new songs too.
So on the list of his most covered songs you'll find a great many big names, rock stars from the 60's
onwards : George Thorogood, The Doors, The Grateful Dead, Led Zeppelin, Canned Heat, Hawkwind,
Juicy Lucy, Stevie Ray Vaughan, The Animals, The Kinks, The Yardbirds, Van Morrison, Tom Pey, The
Rolling Stones, Aerosmith, The Black Crowes, Fleetwood Mac ‐ the list goes on and on.
For the next themed jam night, we are paying homage to this most prolific of blues songwriters. Some
of the songs you already performed at the highly successful ‘Muddy Waters’ themed jam will have
been wrien by Dixon, so you could play them again. But the challenge is to learn a new one, or two
or three! The judges will be looking for songs they didn't hear at the first themed night.
The rules of the themed jam night will be the same
as the first one. There will be a prize for the best,
and there will be a celebrity judge. But the real
prize is playing some of the best blues songs ever
wrien, in front of your peers ‐ other blues
musicians and blues fans who all know or play the
songs. So ‐ go to it ‐ get pracsing ‐ and play your
best. You never know, Dixon might just be in Blues
Heaven and listening in!
Willie Dixon…… singer, musician, song writer, arranger,
record producer and all round Blues Legend. He is
recognized as one of the founders of the Chicago blues
sound. Dixon’s catalogue of successful songs includes
meless tracks like ‘Lile Red Rooster’, ‘I Just Wanna
Make Love to You’, ‘Hoochie Coochie Man’, ‘Spoonful’,
‘I Ain’t Supersous’, ‘My Babe’, ‘Wang Dang Doodle’,
‘Bring it on Home’. His songs were recorded by many
arsts including Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf, Lile
Walter, The Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, Cream, Jimi
Hendrix, Led Zepplin, The Yardbirds, Foghat, Humble
Pie (with Steve Marrio), to name a few. He worked
with Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf, Os Rush, Lile
Walter, Sonny Boy Williamson, Lile Milton, Memphis
Slim and a host of other blues players. His work with
Chuck Berry and Bo Diddley shows the linkage between
blues and the birth of Rock ‘n’ Roll. (Dixon was
posthumously inducted into the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of
Fame in 1994, in the “early influences” (pre‐rock)
category).
Starng out in the 1940s, he began as a bass singer but soon moved on to the upright bass.
By 1951 he was working for Chess Records where he acted as producer, talent scout, session
musician, arranger and staff songwriter; working with Muddy Walters, Howlin’ Wolf, Bo Diddley,
Chuck Berry, Lile Walter and a feast of other arsts. He also worked for Cobra Records, where he
produced early singles for Os Rush, Magic Sam and Buddy Guy. Somehow he sll found me to
record and release material under his own name. By 1962 he was playing on one of the first
European Blues Tours. While in England, he made contact with many musicians and interested
pares. He le tapes of his songs, which were circulated within the R’n’B scene. Brish R’n’B bands
of the ‘60s constantly drew on Dixon’s song book for inspiraon. (In late 1964, The Rolling Stones
had their second #1 single in the UK, with his ‘Lile Red Rooster’). By the late 1960s he was
organising and assembling the All‐Star, Chicago based blues shows for work throughout Europe.
In his later years, he became a reless ambassador for the blues and a vocal advocate for its
praconers: founding the Blues Heaven Foundaon. The organizaon works to preserve the blues’
legacy and to secure copyrights and royales for blues musicians who were exploited in the past. He
was inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame in 1980 and in 1989 he received a Grammy award for his
own album, ‘Hidden Charms’. Willie summed it all up by saying ’….. the blues are the roots and other
music are the fruits. It’s beer keeping the roots alive, because it means beer fruits. The blues is
the roots of all American music. As long as American music survives, so will the blues.’ Long may his
memory and his music survive.
Sunday 10th March 2013 — 8 Bands
On a hot, late summer morning, two buses turned up at the Okoroire Hotel for what might become an annual
event. One bus had musicians and supporters from the Hamilton Blues Society and the other bus had musicians
and supporters from The Bay Of Plenty Blues Club.
‘Blues @ the Oko Corral’ was put together by the
Hamiltonians and featured eight bands, four from the
Hamilton area and four from the Bay Of Plenty area.
They were ‘The Conmen’, ‘24/7 Blues’, ‘Shotgun Hill’ and
‘The Rockaholics’ from Hamilton. BOP bands featured ‘The
Mike Garner Band’, ‘B‐SIDE Band’, ‘Lyndsey and Keith’ and
‘Macka & Co’.
The hotel garden bar area was set up well to cater for an
event of this type (plenty of seang, large awning, covered
stage and food stall) and was soon packed with imported and
local patrons eager to enjoy a good dose of blues.
Outside in the main hotel area, rows of motorcycles were
parked, giving a place the feel of an American Bikers’ Bar.
All good – they were enjoying the sounds! All bands had
a 30 minute spot with the changeovers running smoothly.
At the end it was jam me, a great way to finish the
aernoon.
Everyone I spoke to really enjoyed the event and all
comments for posive. What a wonderful me was had by
all at ‘Oko Corral’, what fantasc music, what great interclub
spirit, what a great idea! This deserves to become an
annual event. Next me, BOP Blues Club should pick up the
baton and organise the event.
Recorded in a 100 year old tobacco drying shed, unused for over 30
years; he captures the ambience of the room.
‘Nelson Mail’ newspaper said “ (Ralph) doesn’t over cook his
‘Stories’. Tim Lothar (Denmark) 2012
Tim Lothar is a Delta blues style guitarist who uses both a resonator
guitar and a standard 6 string guitar. Here he presents his 3rd CD to the
world with 12 songs and all originals. Winner of the ‘Best Danish Blues
Album’ (2009) and ‘Blues Arst of the Year’ (2008), he connues on his
Mississippi blues journey and can be seen throughout Europe, playing
everything from small venues through to fesvals. This is a very
personal album, with tales from real life. Blues Bytes (USA) said “ he
