Since our last issue there has been plenty of
excing blues acvity in our region. The
Marchwood Blues Picnic went off very well, and a
lot of fun was had by all who aended.
Congratulaons to Peter and Carol Archer for a
very well organised event. Those of you who
journeyed up to Okoroire for the blues social
with the Hamilton Club had a fantasc day, too.
Four or five acts from each club played through a
sweltering Sunday aernoon, pictures and a full
report are in this issue.
Our first themed jam night was a success, with
more musicians than non‐musicians in the bar! Every act played at least one
song associated with ‘Muddy Waters’ and some played all three in their set.
Our thanks to all those who put the me in to learn a new song or two, it
certainly put the "blues" back into our regular club night. Special thanks to
the judges, Graham Clark and Derek Jacombs, and congratulaons to the
band that took away the $100 RockShop voucher. B‐Side Band from
Tauranga won with their earthy performance of "Tiger in Your Tank", a
lesser known song by Muddy, played in keeping with the way Muddy would
have liked it.
Talking of themed nights, we are going to repeat this event every few
months and the next one will be on the 29th May (the opening night of the
Rotorua Blues Fesval) when the theme will be ‘Willie Dixon’ For
background reading there are a couple of arcles in this issue, as well as a
link to a list of his most covered songs. Read through the list of famous acts
who have recorded songs by ‘Willie Dixon’, it's impressive. You have a few
weeks to pracce up for the next themed night.
We are grateful to the sponsors who support BOP Blues Club. Our thanks go
to the RockShop who donated many of the spot prizes and musicians who
donated CDs for parcipang acts at the first themed jam night. We are
now very excited to announce that we have been offered a significant
sponsorship deal by The Sound, which is proving to be a very popular radio
staon. They have partnered with us to promote our annual fesval at
Queen's Birthday weekend and other events throughout the year. It's great
to have them on board.
The fesval planning is now well advanced and shaping up well. Our
headline act is Jimi Hocking from Melbourne. Jimi is an excing player, both
as a solo arst and with a full band. Expect to see some fireworks from this
well travelled and dynamic performer. We have had magnificent help from
yet another sponsor, House of Travel, who have provided Jimi's return
airfare. Rotorua Trust has supported us every year and is once again our
major funding sponsor, with addional support from First Sovereign Trust
and others. All sponsors are shown on the poster on page 4.
So dig out that old vinyl and see if you can find some covers of Willie Dixon ‐
I'll bet you have a few ... and if you're too young to remember vinyl, just hop
on to YouTube and slip "Willie Dixon" into the search box.
Keep on digging the blues!
Mike Garner, President.
