Sunday 10th March 2013 — 8 Bands On a hot, late summer morning, two buses turned up at the Okoroire Hotel for what might become an annual event. One bus had musicians and supporters from the Hamilton Blues Society and the other bus had musicians and supporters from The Bay Of Plenty Blues Club. ‘Blues @ the Oko Corral’ was put together by the Hamiltonians and featured eight bands, four from the Hamilton area and four from the Bay Of Plenty area. They were ‘The Conmen’, ‘24/7 Blues’, ‘Shotgun Hill’ and ‘The Rockaholics’ from Hamilton. BOP bands featured ‘The Mike Garner Band’, ‘B‐SIDE Band’, ‘Lyndsey and Keith’ and ‘Macka & Co’. The hotel garden bar area was set up well to cater for an event of this type (plenty of seang, large awning, covered stage and food stall) and was soon packed with imported and local patrons eager to enjoy a good dose of blues. Outside in the main hotel area, rows of motorcycles were parked, giving a place the feel of an American Bikers’ Bar. All good – they were enjoying the sounds! All bands had a 30 minute spot with the changeovers running smoothly. At the end it was jam me, a great way to finish the aernoon. Everyone I spoke to really enjoyed the event and all comments for posive. What a wonderful me was had by all at ‘Oko Corral’, what fantasc music, what great interclub spirit, what a great idea! This deserves to become an annual event. Next me, BOP Blues Club should pick up the baton and organise the event. Franc Sterling B‐SIDE BAND 12
‘All You Can Eat Baby’ The Blues Buffe (Wanganui) 2012 The boys return with a funky, bluesy & rocky album. 10 originals and a cover of the Ea James classic, ‘Blues is my Business’. This is a progression from their first CD ‘Appeser’ (2009). These guys are influenced by Freddy King and The Allman Brothers Band and it shows in their music. Great kiwi rock. Info: www.bluesbuffe.co.nz ‘Hell Street Blues’ Ralph Benne‐Eades (Motueka) 2013 Ralph is back with a new CD featuring ‘Hazel’, his Naonal steel guitar and his voice, mixing originals with covers by Leadbelly, Mississippi Fred MacDowell, Tommy Johnson, Snooks Eaglin & Bob Dylan. Recorded in a 100 year old tobacco drying shed, unused for over 30 years; he captures the ambience of the room. ‘Nelson Mail’ newspaper said “ (Ralph) doesn’t over cook his material—he knows when to use a sly drawl , a shout or a whisper.” A companion for his previous CD ‘Everybody’s Got A Lile Something’. (2011) We saw him at last year’s Rotorua Blues Fesval too. Great delta blues. Recommended: ‘Hell Street Blues’, ‘Drop Down Mamma’. Available: @ gigs. Info: www.ralphblues.co.nz ‘Stories’. Tim Lothar (Denmark) 2012 Tim Lothar is a Delta blues style guitarist who uses both a resonator guitar and a standard 6 string guitar. Here he presents his 3rd CD to the world with 12 songs and all originals. Winner of the ‘Best Danish Blues Album’ (2009) and ‘Blues Arst of the Year’ (2008), he connues on his Mississippi blues journey and can be seen throughout Europe, playing everything from small venues through to fesvals. This is a very personal album, with tales from real life. Blues Bytes (USA) said “ he displays a de touch on guitar with mannered but confident vocals”.
