The convergence of voice, data and video networks presents the telecom industry with many<br />
exciting challenges. In response to those challenges, telecommunications equipment<br />
manufacturers and service providers are competing fiercely to be the first to bring new<br />
products to market. To assure the quality, performance and interoperability of those products,<br />
<strong>Ixia</strong> offers the powerful Message Generator Traffic Simulator (<strong>MGTS</strong>). The <strong>MGTS</strong> ® product line<br />
addresses diagnostic needs with easy-to-use, flexible and automated test solutions.<br />
The <strong>MGTS</strong> product line spans wired and wireless technologies and is based on highperformance<br />
platforms, the <strong>MGTS</strong> p250, p400 and m500. High level applications provide<br />
sophisticated diagnostic capabilities for specific technologies: universal mobile telephone<br />
system (UMTS); SS7, including SS7 over asynchronous transfer mode (ATM); generated packet<br />
radio services (GPRS); and Internet protocol (IP).<br />
The <strong>MGTS</strong> diagnostic system enables developers of third-generation (3G) network architectures<br />
to create custom testers for radio network controller (RNC), UMTS terrestrial radio access<br />
network (UTRAN), and core network elements. The <strong>MGTS</strong> can be used in all phases of<br />
development:<br />
• As a functional test tool during the protocol development phase of signaling products<br />
during simulation<br />
• As a load test tool during network modeling of serving nodes for protocol verification<br />
and operational acceptance<br />
• As an intelligent, high-load diagnostic tool for network integrity and peak performance<br />
testing<br />

<strong>MGTS</strong> UMTS<br />
The <strong>MGTS</strong> provides the protocols, simulators, interfaces, and applications required to build<br />
custom environments for the following systems under test:<br />
• RNC – The <strong>MGTS</strong> UMTS simulates node Bs and core network (MSC and SGSN portions<br />
of UMTS) generating traffic over the lu or lub interfaces toward the RNC under test.<br />
• Core Network (MSC and SGSN) – The <strong>MGTS</strong> UMTS simulates one or more UTRAN<br />
networks, generating traffic over an lu interface toward a core network (MSC or SGSN)<br />
under test.<br />
• Gateway GPRSS Support Node (GGSN) – The <strong>MGTS</strong> UMTS simulates one or more<br />
SGSNs generating traffic over the Gn interface toward the GGSN under test.<br />

Functions and Load Testing<br />
The UMTS test system can be used for functional testing or load testing. A functional test<br />
provides for the early assessment of whether a design works. Once basic function is confirmed,<br />
subsequent load testing can reveal how well the design intent is satisfied, under conditions that<br />
approximate or exceed anticipated use.<br />
