Woolston Riverside
A new urban community
Woolston Riverside, the former Vosper
Thornycroft shipbuilding site, is located on the
east side of the River Itchen and represents a
waterfront development scheme of regional
significance.
The vision for the proposed scheme, which is proposed by the South East England
Development Agency in partnership with the City Council, is based on:
The need to connect the site with Woolston, open up access to the waterfront;
and create a new urban community incorporating distinctive architecture and
design but minimising any environmental and ecological impact.
Enhancement of the local and wider economy through providing significant
employment opportunities.
A masterplan has been produced by the Richard Rogers Partnership which includes:
OCEAN VILLAGE
WOOLSTON
RIVERSIDE
A marine related employment area incorporating a yacht centre, marine trade
centre, boatsheds and boatyard (45,000 sq m).
Leisure, retail and community uses (15,000 sq m) focussing on a new public square.
Residential (about 1500 units) incorporating tall buildings on the waterfront.
Water taxi pier to link with the rest of the city’s waterfront.
