Overview of the Group’s Activities
6.6. Environment 6
6.6.4. Waste
Technip’s waste management policy is based on three key points: limiting waste production, sorting waste to ensure its traceability, and
recycling.
Waste
Total waste weight, by type (in tons) 2009 2008
Non-hazardous waste 63,302 87,763
Hazardous waste 2,441 4,325
6.6.5. Noise pollution
Most of the Group’s operational sites are located in densely industrial
environments and offshore. The noise impact of the Group’s
activities is specifically analyzed, and effective systems and
procedures are implemented at yards to mitigate disturbances.
6.6.6. Biodiversity protection
Technip is an engineering and services company that helps its
clients carry out their projects and their investments.
As it is the client’s responsibility to select project locations,
Technip provides them with environmental consulting services.
To this end, the operating centers have progressively developed a
systemic environmental analysis method (ENVID) that is implemented
at every stage of the project.
This tool ensures that all environmental aspects are properly
accounted for in the design and construction or installation
phases, and when evaluating selected options in terms of cost,
environmental sensitivity and best practices.
In 2009, specific attention was paid to coastal zones. On the Kupe
construction site, in New Zealand, an original phyto-filtration
system has been put in place to collect and treat the run off
waters from the construction site. This prevents the discharge
of waste waters in the natural environment and contributes to
the preservation of the coastal ecosystem. In Yemen, where the
Company has delivered the first LNG train of the YLNG gas liquefaction
unit, the works on the coastline and at sea are subject to
a particular attention in order to protect the coral reefs near the
site.
In Brazil, as part of the celebration of the 50 th anniversary of the
Company, the plantation of 50 different species of trees has been
launched in Macae and Rio de Janeiro.
6.6.7. Legal and regulatory compliance
Technip operates within the framework of environmental regulations,
standards, laws and international codes in force in the
countries where it does business. Applicable regulations and client
demands are identified at the proposal stage in order to ensure
they are properly monitored and respected during project execution.
The project manager issues a document summarizing legal
and other contractual requirements for each discipline. Quality,
HSE and legal departments of each entity verify that activities
are in compliance with these regulations and monitor regulatory
developments.
6.6.8. Expenses related to reducing the
Group’s environmental impact
These expenses are linked to the strategic investments and the
operating charges related to managing waste and effluents at
sites. The two new vessels that started operations in 2009, are
“DNV clean design” certified and are designed to reduce their
environmental impact and energy consumption.
Annual expenditure related to environmental protection (in thousands of Euro) 2009 2008
Total running costs 325 370
Total engaged investments 1,457 674
6.6.9. Health, Safety and Environmental
organization
Organization
Environmental policy implementation relies upon Management’s
commitment, the accountability of each Region and ongoing
dialogue with parties involved.
The Sustainable Development Committee, with the support of
HSE management, coordinates a network of environmental
representatives at each entity, organizes technical working groups
including experts from each activity, and puts together programs
at the company focusing on environmental performance indicators,
carbon accounting and eco-design.
