Former Big Valley superintendent stabbed,
wife killed by nephew, Redding police say
The 2007 Big Valley
interim schools superintendent
remained in
critical condition Tuesday
after sustaining multiple
stab wounds at his Redding
home.
Lynn Robert “Bob”
Watson, 68, was found
by Redding police Friday
morning in front of a neighbor’s
residence where he
had gone to seek help,
said Sgt. Al Mellon. The
initial 911 call was made
about 5:30 a.m. by Watson’s
wife Candice, 66.
Police found her dead
inside the couple’s garage
at the 4100 block of Boston
Avenue.
The Shasta County
coroner’s office listed her
cause of death Tuesday as
due to an “incised wound
of the neck.”
Police then found Candice’s
nephew Cody William
Nash, 30, lying on the
floor inside a spare bedroom,
that was also used
as an office, next to the
Unknown
if runoff
needed for
District 3
supervisor
With more and more
voters each year deciding
to cast their ballots by mail
rather than at county precincts,
results are delayed
as to which candidates win
or lose.
Close races, such
as the one for District 3
Shasta County supervisor,
are undecided still a week
after the June 5 primary
election.
Pam Giacomini holds
just a 29-vote margin in
determining
whether or
not there will
be a runoff
election
with Patrick
Henry Jones
in November.
As of
Tuesday,
she is leading
the contest
with
50.34 percent
(4,312
votes) to
J o n e s ’
36.22 percent
(3,102
votes). A
PATRICK
JONES
third candidate,
Fred Ryness
garnered 13.08 percent
(1,120 votes).
Cathy Darling Allen,
Shasta County clerk and
registrar of voters, said
Tuesday all but about
1,000 ballots remained to
be counted following the
June 5 election.
Only 12,851 voters cast
ballots at their neighborhood
precinct while more
than 30,000 decided to
vote by mail.
Election officials have
until July 6 to complete the
tabulation and the county
clerk had no estimate as
to whether that process
would be completed earlier.
Should Giacomini
receive fewer than half the
votes, plus one, she would
face Jones in the November
general election.
In Lassen County,
Aaron Albaugh was
elected supervisor serving
Big Valley.
charges of murder and
attempted murder. He was
to be arraigned Tuesday
in Shasta County Superior
Court.
Many of the staff within
the Big Valley School District
today worked with Bob
Watson.
“He was a great guy to
work with,” said Teresa Armstrong,
who was the district
secretary at the time Watson
was interim superintendent.
He was hired to replace
Supt. Mark Evans who died
in the Spring of 2007 and
assisted in the hiring of the
next superintendent, Richard
Rhodes, in July 2008.
Prior to his nearly oneyear
stint as superintendent,
Watson had 25 years experience
as a public school
administrator.
He was superintendent of
the Grant Elementary School
District in Redding from
1997-2005.
He started his education
career as a teacher in Sebastapol
in 1973.
“Big Valley needed a
strong personality (with the
sudden vacancy created by
Evans’ death),” said Armstrong,
and Watson exemplified
that.
The Watsons rented a
home in Fall River Valley
where Candice would stay
three or four days per week
before returning to their Redding
residence.
Bob Watson wanted to be
actively involved in the community
and joined the Big
Valley Lions Club.
Armstrong had equally
nice things to say about Candice
whom she worked with
at an eighth grade bazaar.
“She helped me put a
table together and we both
had a great time,” Armstrong
said.
Four students from Burney Elementary School graduated from the sixth grade
with a 4.0 GPA and, for their efforts, received a letter from President Obama.
The BES principal and the four students in the photo are from left, Principal
Marcy Schmidt and students Chelsea Davis, Zachary Thompson, Eli Urlie,
and Devin Murray. The honor means that these four students have never
received less than an A in every class they’ve taken since they started 4th
grade, the year that the school district starts giving grades to students.
11 best summer health tips for 2012
By Charles Stuart Platkin
1. Watch the
Sun(screen)
We spend a lot more time
outdoors during the summer
months, which means more
sun exposure.
According to experts from
the University of Medicine
and Dentistry of New Jersey-
School of Osteopathic
Medicine (UMDNJ-SOM),
you should protect against
the sun’s harmful rays by:
- Applying a sunscreen
with a sun protection factor
(SPF) of at least 15 against
both types of ultraviolet rays
(UVA and UVB).
- Avoiding midday sun
exposure (between 10 a.m.
and 2 p.m.).
- Wearing protective
clothing, including a hat and
sunglasses.
- Reapplying sunscreen
every two or three hours,
or more frequently when
swimming or perspiring
heavily.
- Taking frequent breaks
and drinking water or other
non-alcoholic or caffeinefree
liquids when working or
exercising outside.
To nd out more about
sunscreens, you should read
the Environmental Working
Group’s Skin Deep (
http://breakingnews.ewg.
org/2012sunscreen/) and
check out their review
of more than 1,800 sunscreens
and SPF lip balms,
moisturizers and makeups
INC&seeall=1).
2. Working Out in the
Heat?
Here are a few tips
and warning signs from
the experts at New York-
Presbyterian Hospital
(NYPH) and The Methodist
Hospital in Houston (MH):
- Wear sunscreen and
remember to apply it to your
entire body throughout the
day. Having a sunburn will
decrease your body’s ability
to cool itself off. (NYPH)
- If you realize your pulse
rate in the morning is 10 to
15 beats higher than your
normal rate, you should not
exercise that day. Normal
pulse rate is around 70 to 90
beats per minute. (MH)
- Make sure you are
sweating properly. If you
stop sweating when you
are exercising, you are
dehydrated. (MH)
Dear Savvy Senior,
I need some help
understanding my medical
bills from my knee
replacement surgery earlier
this year. My wife and I live
on a pretty tight budget so
I like to keep track of our
costs as closely as possible.
But the bills I’ve received
are vague and confusing,
and we think we’re being
overcharged. What can you
tell us?
-Trying To Recover
Dear Trying,
Errors and overcharging
have become so
commonplace on medical
bills today that doublechecking
them is a very
smart move that may save
you some money. Here are
some tips and tools that can
help.
Challenge Your Bills
According to the
Medical Billing Advocates
of America, nine out of 10
hospital bills have errors
on them, most of which are
in the hospital’s favor. Bills
from doctor’s ofces and
labs have mistakes too, but
they tend to be fewer and
further apart.
To help you get a handle
on your medical bills and
check for costly errors,
the rst thing you need to
do is request an itemized
statement from the hospital
or health care providers
detailing the charges of the
procedures, supplies, tests
and services they provided
THE DIET
DETECTIVE®
- Forget the “no pain, no
gain” mantra. Recognize
warning signs and take
the appropriate action
immediately. (MH)
- Get acclimated to
the heat as you begin an
exercise regimen. Start off
with 15 minutes, and slowly
work your way up to 45
minutes or an hour. (MH)
- Take your workout
indoors. When it is too hot
or humid outside, exercise
in a cool, air-conditioned
space. Extreme temperatures
can alter your circulation,
increasing the work of your
heart and making breathing
more difcult. (NYPH)
- Avoid exercising
between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.,
the hottest part of the day.
(MH)
3. Are You Hungry or
Just Thirsty?
We often mistake thirst for
hunger, especially during the
warm summer months. Don’t
eat when what you really
want is to drink.
4. Stay Hydrated
According to the Institute
of Medicine of the National
Academies, women should
consume 91 ounces of water
a day, and men need 125
ounces -- a good deal more
than the 64 ounces (8 cups)
generally recommended.
5. Injured? Try RICE
Dr. William Levine, chief
of sports medicine at New
York-Presbyterian Hospital/
Columbia University Medical
Center, recommends that
for tennis elbow, runner’s
knee and similar injuries, you
should try RICE - Rest, Ice,
Compression and Elevation.
“Rest means that the
injured area is not put
through any undue strain,”
Levine says. “When icing a
How to challenge your medical bills
you. They are legally
required to provide you with
this information.
If the statement contains
confusing billing codes or
abbreviations that you don’t
understand, call the billing
ofce for an explanation.
You can also look up most
medical billing codes online
by going to any online
search engine and typing in
“CPT” followed by the code
number.
Once you receive and
decode the statement,
review it carefully and keep
your eyes peeled for these
mistakes:
• Double billing: Being
charged twice for the same
services, drugs, or supplies.
• Typos: Incorrect billing
codes or dollar amounts.
• Canceled work:
Charging for a test your
doctor ordered, then
canceled.
• Phantom services:
Being charged for services,
test or treatments that were
never received.
• Up-coding: Inated
charges for medications and
supplies.
• Incorrect length of stay:
body part, apply the ice in a
covering so that it is not in
direct contact with the skin. A
cotton handkerchief covering
the ice is helpful.
“Ice the affected area
several times a day, for
about 20 minutes at a time.
Compression is applying
pressure to the injured area
to stop bleeding (if any
is occurring) or to reduce
swelling. Elevation helps
in these respects as well.
Compression and elevation
are to be used in the case
of acute injuries, such as a
twisted ankle.”
6. Summer BBQ and
Picnic Eating
Top frankfurters with
sauerkraut, ketchup, mustard
and/or relish. Stay away from
cheesy sauces and chili.
For burgers, use the
leanest beef you can nd,
and mix in nely chopped
vegetables such as
mushrooms, onions and
peppers to increase nutrients
and lower the calorie content
without reducing the volume.
Watch out for barbecued
ribs. Just six medium ribs
have more than 1,000
calories.
One 3.5-ounce fried
chicken breast has about 250
calories, and one drumstick
with skin has about 200
calories.
Pasta salad? For 1 cup,
depending on ingredients,
you’re looking at 500-650
calories. Use 100 percent
whole-wheat pasta and light
vinaigrette or low-calorie
Italian dressing.
Baked beans can be 300
calories per cup.
Coleslaw can be more
than 350 calories per
cup. Use light or nonfat
mayonnaise, and make it
yourself.
Use healthy, low-calorie
marinades instead of oil and
butter to avor foods.
7. Grilling
Try grilling your food to
avoid excessive grease, but
make sure not to burn or char
it (considering the potential
health risks of eating burnt
meat). Cut off any charred
portions before eating.
To avoid burning, remove
fat, brush with low-calorie
marinades and use a meat
thermometer. Also, cook at
low temperatures for longer
periods, and try using thinner
cuts of meat and poultry.
You can also try Williams-
Sonoma’s Jumbo Chef’s
Press and cook food 20 to 30
By
Jim Miller
Most hospitals will charge
for the admission day, but
not for day of discharge. Be
sure you’re not paying for
both.
• Incorrect room charges:
Being charged for a private
room, even if you stayed in a
semi-private room.
• In ated operating room
fees: Being billed for more
time than was actually used.
Compare the charge with
your anesthesiologist’s
records.
To make sure the
charges on your bill are
reasonably priced, use the
Healthcare Blue Book at
healthcarebluebook.com.
This is a free resource that
lets you look up the going
rate of health care costs in
your area.
If you nd errors or have
questions about charges,
contact your provider’s
billing ofce and your
insurer. If they don’t help
you and the discrepancies
are signicant, you should
consider getting help from
a trained professional who
specializes in analyzing
medical bills and negotiates
with health care providers,
percent faster (www.williamssonoma.com,
$39.96).
8. Eat Watermelon
It’s only 92 calories per
2-cup serving, and it lls you
up because it’s 92 percent
water, which will also help to
rehydrate your body on a hot
summer day.
On average, watermelon
has 7.5 to 10 milligrams of
the antioxidant lycopene per
cup - that’s about 40 percent
more than is found in raw
tomatoes.
When you’re choosing
watermelon, look for rm,
juicy, red esh without white
streaks and skin without
cracks, bruises or mold.
9. Try Some Fun
Summer Calorie Burners
How many calories these
activities burn per hour:
- Gardening: 281 calories
- Beach volleyball: 562
calories
- Frisbee: 210 calories
- Bodysur ng: 212
calories
- Bicycling: 421 calories
- Kadima (beach paddle
tennis): 240 calories
- Kayaking: 352 calories
- Golf (walking and
carrying clubs): 316 calories
- Hiking: 422 calories
- Canoeing: 211 to 490
calories
- Tennis: 492 calories
- Rowing: 492 calories
- Water-skiing: 422
calories
- Snorkeling: 352 calories
- Water volleyball: 211
calories
10. Strength Train
Jordan D. Metzl, M.D., a
sports medicine physician
at the Hospital for Special
Surgery, recommends
building functional strength
as the key to an injuryfree
summer. Do lots of
repetitions along with light
weight workouts.
Dear EarthTalk:
Diesel exhaust
from trucks, buses,
large ships and
farm equipment is
especially unhealthy.
What progress has
been made in curbing
diesel pollution?
- Jackie Mitchell,
Barre, Mass.
Gasoline-powered passenger cars plying American
roads have been subject to strict pollution limits for some
three decades already, but only recently have tougher
standards for diesel-powered trucks, trains, barges and
other soot-belching vehicles gone on the books across the
country.
Traditionally, older diesel engines produce less carbon
dioxide per mile driven than gasoline-powered vehicles,
but they produce more of the pollution associated with
localized environmental trauma—such as smog and soot
in the air—that can trigger respiratory and cardiovascular
problems and have been linked to lung and other cancers.
Thanks to the work of the Environmental Defense
Fund (EDF), American Lung Association (ALA) and others,
though, the U.S. government has adopted increasingly
stringent rules governing how much particulate pollution
and other toxins are allowed to come out of diesel engines.
In 2001, these groups convinced Congress to pass
strict new pollution limits on heavy-duty trucks and buses.
Three years later similarl standards were applied for nonroad
vehicles, including construction and farm equipment.
These laws were designed to clean up new diesel
engines, but the millions of older diesel engines still on
American roads, work sites and waterways continue to
cause pollution problems.
Newer state laws in California, Texas and New York
calling on owners of older diesel vehicles to retro t their
engines with emissions reduction equipment has helped
clean the air in those states. And regional public-private
partnerships administered by the U.S. Environmental
Protection Agency’s National Clean Diesel Campaign
have also helped put a dent in diesel emissions from the
trucking, rail and shipping sectors.
Even though the clean-up of diesel engines has only
been mandated in the U.S. within the last 10 years, the
positive effects are already noticeable. A recent report
(“State of the Air: 2012”) issued by the ALA found that, in
urban areas across the U.S., ozone-causing smog is down
13 percent, soot levels are 24 percent lower and short-term
particulate pollution is down some 28 percent over the last
decade.
Meanwhile, California’s Diesel Risk Reduction Plan,
which calls for cleaner-burning diesel fuels, retro tting of
older engines with particle-trapping lters, and the use in
new diesel engines of advanced technologies that yield
some 90 percent fewer particle emissions, has already cut
diesel particle emissions by 75 percent there, with 10 more
percentage points worth of clean-up expected by 2020.
“Together, these regulations will prevent tens of
thousands of deaths and hospitalizations each year,”
reports EDF. “The billions of dollars in public health
bene ts far outweigh the costs of controlling pollution.”
Green leaders concede we still have lots of work to do
on the issue, given that 40 percent of the U.S. population
still lives in areas with unsafe levels of smog and soot
pollution. But there is optimism that pollution reduction
policies like California’s will soon be standard elsewhere
as well, making our air even cleaner and reducing the
percentage of Americans living in areas with compromised
air quality.
ARIES - Mar 21/Apr 20: Expect to expend a little energy
is not the best way to go in this instance. Step up.
TAURUS - Apr 21/May 21: Taurus, focus on the big picture
or nothing will get accomplished. It’s too easy to get lost in all of
the little details. Follow through on the task at hand.
GEMINI - May 22/Jun 21: Gemini, someone will catch
your ear and it will only serve to confuse you. You won’t know
what to make of it but don’t get worried. It will all begin to make
sense once a few pieces fall into place.
CANCER - Jun 22/Jul 22: Lots of people need your help,
Cancer. Focus all of your energy on helping others for the time
being. You will feel good about your efforts and the good karma
as follows:
LOT 9, AS SHOWN ON THE MAP OF BURNEY PINES SUBDIVI-
NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding
on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved
in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien,
not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction
does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the
property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off
may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you
are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien
being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property.
You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size
of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the
county recorder's office or a title insurance company, either of which
may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these
resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more
than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property.
NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice
of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee,
beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the
California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee
sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a
courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether
your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled
time and date for the sale of this property, you may visit this
Internet Web site http://ccfirm.com/sales for information regarding the
sale of this property, using the file number assigned to this case 11-
11-36474-CA. Information about postponements that are very short in
duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately
be reflected on the Internet Web site. The best way to verify
postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale.
I certify (or declare) under penalty of perjury under the law of the state
of California that the foregoing is true and correct.
