Reflections program...-From Page 1These dedicated teachersaccepted the challengeto have their students bestinterpret what the thememeant to each of them. With respect to one ofthe teachers, year after yearKindergarten teacher KarenChurney has been a staunchsupporter of the Reflectionsprogram. From the first yearit was offered by BES PTA in1983-84, Karen has annuallyparticipated in the programeliciting incredible works ofart from her young charges. She notes that a benefit ofthe program is that giveslocal children the opportunityto participate outside thiscommunity, adding “anythingthat gives the kids the opportunityto broaden their experienceis a good thing.”To emphasize her point,Karen outlined how her son,Brian Churney, entered the1983-84 Reflections “I Havea Dream” competition asa Kindergartner and wasselected as a State Finalist.Brian’s reward: readinghis literature piece in front of1,600 people at the CA StateBy DAN BOUSEAdin is the place to be thisweekend as Big Valley’s firstBeef and Brew event menujust keeps growing.Smoked Beef Sausagehas been added as well asDutch Oven treats and youwill be able to watch as theDutch Oven delights, includingcobbler, are preparedright in front of you in a1800s setting complete withcovered wagon.Big Valley’s best chefs willbe producing their best beefcreations for you to sampleat this first annual event, showcasing beef productionin Big Valley.-From Page 1tance of a California HighwayPatrol helicopter crew andSearch and Rescue personnel. The Pit River Canyon areais inaccessible by vehicleand is very steep and brushyterrain. The man was locatednude near the Pit River andshowed signs of dehydration. He was taken to the hospitalfor medical treatment and amental health evaluation. The date is Saturday, July21, 4:30 p.m. at the AdinCommunity Park.So come join your friendsin the park and attend theother events this weekendin Big Valley including theGolden State’s Star Party onFriday night and the MarketFest all day Saturday andSunday in the parking lot ofthe Oney Frosty.Join your friends andenjoy samples of the finestbeef entrees prepared by,now, fourteen of the finestBig Valley Chefs including; The Oney brother’s famousShoulder Clod, BBQed BeefRibs done by Josh Tankersley,Thor Thorlakson’s BeefChili, Beef Brisket preparedby Nick Von Flue, LeteciaBaptista’s Beef Enchiladas,Beef Meatballs by the IntermountainCattlewomen,Tom and Meg Ricker, Haland Mary Novack and Donand Pam Mc Broome’sfamous Dutch Oven dishesprepared right at the park,Gretta Rodriques’ CarneAsada, Smoked Beef Sausageprepared by RodgerParker and to top it off youcan sample Rocky MountainOysters prepared for you byBrian Gerig.Fine wine and beer, includingmicro-brews, are part ofthe evening. Iced Tea andLemonade will be served by–Please See Page 4First Beef and Brew in AdinRescue inPit canyonPTA convention in Sacramentothat year—definitely alife-changing experience.Local resident and retired1st grade teacher, PamMorris pointed out that “If youever had time to check outthe bulletin boards in Karen’sclassroom or witness one ofher plays, you would immediatelyrealize that the artswere second only to the childrenthemselves.” She continuedby stressing that “in acurriculum packed with theusual 3 Rs, she always foundunique ways to introducefamous artists, authors andmusicians to her students.”Karen, herself, noted thatin an era of “drill and kill”workbooks, that it’s importantto have fun in the classroom, adding that as long asa teacher is covering the requisitematerial, then incorporatingthe arts can be usefulto the children. BES PrincipalMarcy Schmidt confirmedby pointing out that the BESKindergarten teachers producean “incredible amountof art to help the kids connectwith what they’re learning.”She continued by emphasizingthat “art comes naturallyto children—it’s a great wayto express themselves.”After 39 years teaching,Karen just retired to theextreme dismay and disappointmentof her many ardentsupporters. However, shewill apparently be retainedin a consultancy with theFall River Joint UnifiedSchool District to help outnew teachers and help outin BES’ Kindergarten readingprogram—including trainingof Kindergarten reading volunteers. Her participation inthe annual Reflections programwill be sorely missed, but she definitely establishedthe bar to making the artsintegral to children’s educationat Burney Elementary. In addition to teachers likeKaren, the Reflections programrelies heavily on communityvolunteers to evaluatethe pieces produced bythe children. For the 2011-12 PTA Reflections program, the 189 cumulative entrieswere evaluated by the followingcommunity judges whoannually donate their timethe Providence 4-H.Tickets are $20 for unlimitedsampling of beef.
