The family of a Fall River Mills resident lives less than
100 miles from the area where Mother Nature’s devastating
forces disrupted the lives of millions of Japanese on
Friday, March 11. A 20-mile deep, 9.0 Pacific Ocean earthquake
caused a tsunami with 33-foot-high waves traveling
six miles inland.
“Life in the area that’s hit by the tsunami will probably
Sullivan, a member of
a traffic accident on Oct.
from his Shingletown
The project cost,
which Bosenko estimated
at $3,000, will be paid
Volunteers
needed for
groundwater
monitoring
Shasta County is seeking
volunteers who will
allow groundwater monitoring
and the county
water agency is sending
letters to those located in
one of the 10 recognized
groundwater basins.
On Nov. 6, 2009, Gov.
Arnold Schwarzenegger
signed Senate Bill 7-6
requiring counties to monitor
groundwater basins
and report the results to
the Department of Water
Resources.
Individual well owners
are not required to participate,
however the county
is seeking volunteers, said
Eric Wedemeyer, Shasta
County Water Agency
supervising engineer.
Plans are to take three
measurements per year
of the groundwater elevations
in area wells of those
participating.
Included with the letter
is a Right of Entry permit
granting the county and its
agents access to the property
for no longer than 10
years.
The data will be compiled
in a statewide database
made available to
the public.
Local, state, federal and
all interested parties can
use the data to evaluate
and monitor groundwater
conditions in California’s
groundwater basins and
subbasins.
The goal of the program
is to determine seasonal
and long-term trends in
groundwater levels within
the basins.
Donations from Intermountain area businesses
will fund bridge memorials for fallen deputies
publication, the Shasta
Lake Bulletin, which
covers the City of Shasta
Lake and surrounding
area. A like amount was
raised during that promotion,
bringing the total for
both tributes to more than
$2,000.
“It is anticipated the
$2,100 donation will make
the total contributions in
excess of the $3,000 goal
for the memorial bridges
for the project,” Bosenko
said.
“However, any additional
funds will be utilized
for a memorial bridge
project for Sheriff Albert F.
Ross Sr. who was killed in
January 1919.”
Bill
“The tsunami waves will hit the Los Angeles
area beaches about 8:15 a.m.,” the television
news announcer stated on Friday morning,
March 11.
“Wow, a once in a lifetime event,” I thought.
I was in Redondo Beach to bicycle from the
southern terminus of the beachfront recreational
trail running 22 miles past Santa Monica Pier to
Will Rogers State Park near Malibu.
My second thought was to grab my camera
and be the only Intermountain area, maybe
Shasta County, reporter with an eyewitness
report.
Like everyone in the hotel’s breakfast bar,
I was watching television when forecasters
extended the arrival of the Redondo Beach tsunami
wave by 10 minutes.
The newscast showed a live picture of a surfer
bravely riding waves ignoring the fact beaches
were closed and his life may be in jeopardy.
First reports from Eureka were not good.
I donned my Intermountain News hat,
grabbed the camera and note pad and headed
for the best beach location.
Yes, I would stand close to the water to get a
good photograph of Mother Nature’s phenomenon
for this newspaper. A bit adventuresome
or maybe crazy.
I missed by four days the opportunity to provide
an eyewitness account of the estimated millions
of sardines that suffocated when trapped
in the Redondo Beach marina. I wasn’t going to
miss this opportunity.
On the in-land side of King Harbor parking
lot, local fire department volunteers and staff
established an emergency response center.
Further north, near the yacht club, the local
fire department engine and police accessed the
ocean on the paved marina break.
With my usual confidence, I decided to follow
the engine since that was likely going to the
action location.
Approaching the guarded entry, I walked to
the Redondo Beach police officer to identify
myself and, confidently, I thought, gain access
to the site.
He asked for my press identification. I pointed
to the ball cap with the newspaper name emblazoned
across it.
“That is supposed to identify you as a
reporter” he questioned without hesitation,
almost laughing.
He directed me to an unguarded beach area
located behind a retaining wall.
“You just missed the first wave. It was about
one foot higher than normal,” stated Dave, a
lifelong Redondo Beach resident.
With my camera ready, we watched waves
and shared personal health stories.
As I later learned, the undertow wrecked
havoc to boats along coastal communities from
southern Oregon to Santa Cruz.
Fortunately, tsunami waves had largely fizzled
out by the time they reached L.A. beaches.
A second story developed as Dave shared
his captivating human-interest story.
He pointed to the Charter House restaurant
and mentioned he managed it before joining a
major food distributor as a sales person.
His financial success was rewarded with
trips to Alaska, Hawaii and overseas locations,
where he played golf and his wife shopped.
Last fall, he was diagnosed with a pituitary
gland tumor.
After lengthy deliberation and discussions
with his wife, he resigned his high-paying job
to undergo treatment so he would be alive to
enjoy his young children, then three years and
two months of age.
His colleagues didn’t understand and mocked
his decision. He said they later expressed their
admiration for his decision, sometimes with a
bit of envy in their voice.
Surgery last December determined the tumor
was non-cancerous but could not be removed.
Slowly it is shrinking and his formerly uncontrolled
hormones, emotions and mood is stabilizing.
Prognosis from the two-month, post-op examination
is good with full recovery expected.
Dave works part-time in less stressful jobs
but spends most of his time with the children
while his wife works.
His mother called from Hawaii ending our
conversation.
Time wasted No, way.
The purpose of my trip was to enjoy life while
deciding a course of treatment for recurring
prostate cancer.
In life’s scheme, at the time, Dave’s story had
more impact on me than watching the waves.
so kind, generous, and supportive
of our law enforcement
officers,” Bosenko
said.
“I sincerely thank everyone
who contributed to this
project. I’m very proud we will
be able to honor and always
remember these officers who
made the supreme sacrifice
serving the citizens of Shasta
County,” he said.
“There will be an
announcement when the
dedications will take place.
Perhaps in October near the
date of their deaths.”
To complete the renaming
of the bridges, Bosenko
said he has asked Assemblyman
Jim Nielsen, R-Gerber,
to introduce the appropriate
legislation.
“We are fortunate to have
dedicated legislators in the
north state that will allow
us to get that recognition,”
Bosenko said.
DEPUTY KENNETH
PERRIGO
The shooting of Perrigo
rocked the north state and its
law enforcement community.
It occurred late on a nearfreezing
night after Perrigo,
a resident deputy in Burney,
had arrested Tomas Cruz
and Carlos Estrada after he
discovered them passed out
in a car in front of the Inter-
Mountain Fairgrounds in
McArthur.
While Perrigo was transporting
the men to the jail in
Redding, authorities believe
the handcuffed suspects
managed to reach under the
patrol car’s dividing metal
cage and grab Perrigo’s
fanny pack which held his
personal weapon.
Cruz used the 9-mm handgun
to shoot Perrigo through
the Plexiglas screen that
separated the front and rear
seats.
After the patrol car
swerved, overturned and
finally crashed, Estrada
picked up the gun and shot
Perrigo in the neck. Both suspects
fled on foot, prompting
the largest manhunt in
Shasta County history.
An estimated 500 officers
from throughout California
and Oregon participated in
the search, which ended
when both Estrada and Cruz
were captured six days later
at a rice mill 5 miles north of
Fall River Mills.
Both men were convicted
of murder by a Sonoma
County jury. Cruz remains on
San Quentin Prison’s Death
Row while Estrada is serving
a life-without-parole sentence.
“I think it was his life goal
to be a police officer,” friend
and now-retired Sheriff’s
Capt. Dave Compomizzo
said of Perrigo, who was the
son of a state trooper. “He
was doing what he wanted
to do out there. It’s sad. Just
horrible.”
Compomizzo, who worked
with Perrigo in Burney,
described him as a quiet
young man and a dedicated
husband and father.
“The whole community
of Burney came out for this
thing. We had agencies
from all over showing up for
the manhunt,” Compomizzo
said. “It changed my life. It
made me a different officer.
After Kenny’s death, I try to
go to every officer’s funeral,
from Oregon to the Bay Area,
because so many came to
ours. A lot of people feel that
way in our department.”
DEPUTY DENNIS
‘SKIP’ SULLIVAN
Sullivan was killed in the
line of duty when the trailer
of an eastbound truck tipped
over and smashed his compact
pickup truck. Sullivan
was driving on Highway 44
east of Shingletown when the
2:45 a.m. accident occurred.
He died instantly, according
to the California Highway
Patrol.
Leonard Felter, a retired
sheriff’s deputy, worked with
Sullivan during Sullivan’s six
years with the department.
“He was hard working and
a good guy to have with you
on a case in an investigation,”
Felter said. “He had a
great sense of humor.”
As a hostage negotiator,
Felter said Sullivan had a
unique talent.
“Most guys can’t do it,” he
said. “It’s not a simple operation.
You’re usually talking to
a guy at the worst point in his
life. He had a lot of schooling
and a lot of experience at it.”
Sullivan was a patrol
deputy who had been stationed
at the Palo Cedro
Sheriff’s substation since
March of 1987. Prior to that
he was a resident deputy in
the Shingletown area. He
went to work for the Sheriff’s
Seven local women have
plans to walk 60 miles over
the course of three days as
a way to raise money for
breast cancer research and
community programs.
The event is set for Sept.
each of them must raise a
minimum of $2,300 for the
cause.
Nancy G. Brinker promised
her dying sister, Susan
G. Komen, she would do
everything in her power to
end breast cancer forever.
In 1982, that promise
became the Susan G. Komen
for the Cure and launched
the global breast cancer
movement. The cause has
invested more than $1.9 billion
dedicated to the fight
against breast cancer.
has been lost in this disaster
is beyond imagination.”
Zimmerman’s uninjured
family live in Hanamaki City,
Iwate prefecture, located 45
miles from the tsunami devastated
coastal area and 78
miles from the earthquake’s
epicenter. A prefecture is the
geographical governmental
area equivalent to a single
state.
A mountain range separates
the tsunami damaged
eastern coastal area from the
western inland location of her
family.
Their location is west of
the nuclear power plants
and its emanating radiation,
which has been traveling
southeast.
Zimmerman is surprised
she immediately connected
by cellular telephone with
one of her two brothers at 3
a.m. on Saturday, 12 hours
after the earthquake.
Three hours later she
talked with her parents on
their landline phone. “It went
through easily, also, but my
parents were surprised the
phone worked since they
didn’t have power.”
Power was restored in four
days. A well provides domestic
and agricultural water.
“There are a lot of earthquakes
in the area” so the
family home is built to withstand
this geological force.
The family agriculture
mushroom business was disrupted
but suffered “no huge
damage.” However, the six or
seven employees cannot get
to work because of gasoline
shortages.
While living at home, Zimmerman
did not worry about
tsunamis because of the
mountain range.
“The entire coastline in
Iwate and Miyagi prefectures
was wiped out completely,”
Zimmerman stated.
“The lives of those who live
outside the most devastated
areas, including my family
members in inland Iwate,
seem to be slowly moving
towards recovery.
“However, the impact of
the disaster is still felt in their
daily lives from their simple
daily routines that are disrupted
due to the lack of
resources, not to mention the
psychological effect,” Zimmerman
said.
The Shasta College Japanese
language instructor
immigrated to the U.S. at 18
years of age to attend college.
She graduated from
Pennsylvania State University
and worked in the U.S.
for a year.
Zimmerman returned
home to work for two years.
She then moved to England
in 2005 to pursue a Master’s
degree.
She moved to the U.S.
as a permanent resident in
autumn of 2006, locating in
the Intermountain area with
her American husband, Eric
Zimmerman, a teacher at
Fall River High School.
Yoshiko said many of her
college students “expressed
sympathy for my country
and my family. Some of my
students told me that they
were afraid of asking how my
family was, since they knew I
am from northeast Japan and
that something terribly bad
might have really happened
to my family and friends.”
World Bank estimates
earthquake and tsunami
damage at $235 billion.
Insurance costs for earthquake
damage is projected
between $14 and $34 billion.
Only 14 to 17 percent
of Japanese businesses and
individuals have earthquake
insurance.
Tsunami insurance losses
are un-tabulated.
Zimmerman said financial
contributions are the best
assistance to help the Japanese
people.
Bulldogs struggle at the plate,
finish Liberty tournament 1-2
The Fall River Bulldogs
were hoping to leave the
Liberty Christian baseball
tournament with a winning
mark, but despite showing
improvement in the field they
squad struggled at the plate
and finished the tourney a
mark of 1-2.
The Bulldogs (3-3) lost
to the Hooopa Valley Warriors
5-1 before clobbering
the Faith Christian Lions 9-1.
The squad had an opportunity
to leave with a winning
record but fell to the Point
Arena Pirates 12-1 to end
the tournament.
“Defensively, I thought
we played a lot better this
week,” said Bulldog coach
Leo Estes. “I thought we
should have done better
against Point Arena but it
didn’t happen for us.”
Hoopa Valley went on
to win the tournament with
dominant pitching. Tyler Kirk
The Fall River lady Bulldogs
won the consolation
championship at the Liberty
Christian softball tournament
over the weekend
and improve to 6-3 on the
season.
The squad opened the
tournament with a rematch
with the Hayfork Timberjacks
losing 4-3, but bounced
back to dominate their next
two games defeating Liberty
Christian 16-4 and Tulelake
14-3.
Fall River coach Hardy
Vestal said the starting line
up isn’t quite set and used
the tournament to get his
freshman players more field
experience. Although the
decision cost the team a few
errors and a couple costly
runs, there were no regrets.
“We wanted to reward kids
for a good week of practice,”
he said, and every time we
put our freshmen out there
they get a little better.”
Fall got off to a good start
against Hayfork. Lauren
Vestal led off with a triple
to start the game and was
knocked in by Mandy Lakey
for a quick 1-0 lead.
Hayfork tied the game
in third when the left fielder
misplayed a fly ball allowing
Emily Arnold to reach third,
who scored on a RBI single
by Jamie Curry.
The lady Bulldogs rallied
with two out in the sixth to
take a 3-1 lead. Catie Thompson
hit a RBI double to plate
Vestal and scored on a Leah
Imhoff base hit. But some
of the team’s inexperience
showed up in the bottom of
got the only hit for the Bulldogs,
a solo homer in the
fourth inning.
Sterling Humphry was
saddled with the loss striking
out three and walking
two in two innings of work.
Kirk pitched three innings in
relief fanning five with one
free pass.
Kirk had a monster game
against Faith Christian with a
grand slam home run while
going 2-for-3 at the plate
while holding the Lions to
just one run on the hill fanning
six along the way.
On the up side, Estes
said the younger players are
showing improvement. Klay
Pasqual is doing a good job
on the mound pitching in
relief. Jesse Lee is looking
good at first base and is putting
the bat on the ball.
“He (Lee) is putting the ball
in play they just aren’t falling
in for him,” Estes said.
Freshmen gain
experience, Lady
Bulldogs now 6-3
the seventh allowing the Timberjacks
to round the bases
and get the win.
Lakey struck out six from
the circle in the loss.
Sarah Estes tossed a
complete game against Liberty
Christian. The freshman
hurler struggled a little
in the fourth inning allowing
four runs, but had an
overall strong performance
with seven strikeouts in four
innings of work.
“She had a tough inning
the fourth,” coach Vestal
said,” coach Vestal said, “but
she gutted through it and did
a good job for a freshman.”
The first Patriot batter
sent a blast to the left-center
gap, but Maryann Parker got
a great jump and made the
catch and Liberty went down
in order. The lady Bulldogs
came to the plate and scored
four runs for an early lead.
Fall River led 6-4 in the
middle of the fourth, but rallied
to score 10 runs in the
home half of the inning to
invoke the mercy rule.
Against Tulelake, the lady
Bulldogs chipped away scoring
multiple runs in each of
the five innings for another
mercy rule victory. Fall River
led 10-3 when they came to
bat in the bottom of the fifth
where they scored four more
runs to end the game.
Lakey fanned six from the
circle and went 3-for-4 at the
plate with a double and four
RBI; Vestal was 3-for-3 with
a double, triple and four runs
scored. Parker hit a threerun
triple in the third; Imhoff
scored twice witha RBI.
Hayfork’s Jamie Curry slides under the tag of Fall River hurler Mandy Lakey
in the Timberjack’s 4-3 win over Fall River Thursday.
What a difference a week
makes for the Burney lady
Raiders. After a 0-6 start to
the season, the squad went
3-1 at the Liberty Christian
softball tournament for a third
place finish. The tourney was
played in miserable, cold and
rainy weather on Friday and
Saturday with teams determined
to get their games in.
Burney (3-7) showed great
improvement in defensive
awareness and base running
and had overcome adversity
to get wins against Tulelake
and U-Prep. The team failed
to get one bunt down in the
Anderson tourney, but turned
to the small ball to get their
first big win of season 10-running
the host Patriots in the
tournament opener.
“The girls have been
working really hard in practice,”
said Burney coach
Rich Fuentes. “We still have
a long way to go but I’m
very happy with the way we
played. We bunted the ball
well; we’re aggressive on the
base paths and played better
in the field.”
Burney plated multiple
runs in every inning in their
opener with Liberty Christian
en route to a 16-5 victory.
Burney scored six runs in the
first inning for a 6-2 lead. The
Patriots were inching their
Raiders blast competition at Liberty Christian
baseball tourney, improve to 6-2 on season
The weather didn’t allow
the Burney Raiders to get
in all the games that were
scheduled at the Liberty
Christian baseball tournament
over the weekend. But
the two games they did play,
their bats dominated. The
Raiders defeated the
U-Prep Panthers 16-2 and
the Point Arena Pirates 10-1
Friday and Saturday.
The team started a game
with Hayfork and held a 2-0
lead when the game was canceled
due to rain. The Raiders
were awarded second
place based on runs allowed
with three. Hoopa Valley took
first only giving up two runs.
Raider coach Tony Pellegrino
was hoping to get
in the extra games but was
pleased with the team’s performance
in the two they
played.
“We’re starting to come
together,” he said. “What’s
really fun to watch is they’re
starting to do the little things
really well.”
What the Raiders are
doing is hitting the ball well
led by Michael Childers, who
finished the tournament going
7-for-7 at the plate knocking
in eight runs.
The Raiders (6-2) opened
against the Panthers and
jumped out to 13-0 first
inning lead. Childers hit a
grand slam homer in the first
and the Raiders brought 17
hitters to the plate. Childers
had a three-run blast in the
second to put the team up
with a mark of 2-0 and a second place fi nish.
hit a double and scored three
runs and Cody Smith was
2-for-2 and scored twice.
Freshman Craig Fitzhugh
knocked in a pair to help out.
Against the Pirates, Burney
trailed 0-1 in the second
inning. But with two out and
a runner on second the Raiders
rallied and plated seven
runs bringing 17 batters to
the plate. George capped the
inning with a 3-RBI double
with base loaded and the
Raiders never looked back.
Smith fanned seven
Pirates from the hill to earn
the win and helped his cause
with a RBI double in the
fourth.
Alex Courtight threw out
two Pirates trying to swipe a
The Raiders will wrap up
their preseason with a double
dip at Fall River Friday.
way back into when the lady
Raiders went to a small ball
approach advancing runners
and forcing throws. Burney
scored six runs in the bottom
of the fourth to invoke the
mercy rule.
Breanna Benson struck
out the side in the second
inning and threw her first
complete game of the season
for the team’s first win of the
year. Cynthia Schoepflin was
emerging as the team’s ace
but was ineligible for the tournament.
Benson tossed all
four games and impressed
Fuentes enough to be promoted
as the team’s starting
pitcher.
“She’s earned it,” Fuentes
said.
Mercy dropped out of the
tournament so Burney was
able to pick up an extra game
against Tulelake. Burney
overcame their first deficit
of the year and thwarted
a Honkers’ late comeback
attempt for a 10-9 win.
Burney struggled in the
second inning and Tulelake
scored eight runs to take an
8-5 advantage. But the lady
Raiders rallied in the top of
the fourth to regain the lead.
Robyn Garner and Benson
earned walks and advanced
on passed balls to set the
table for Shakay Claire who
double to left. Burney went to
a small ball approach again
and set the table again.
Mariah Vancleave singled to
left to score Hailey Ashe for
a 10-8 lead and time running
out.
The Honkers threatened
in the bottom of the fourth
with runners on first and
third with one out. Rosario
Jaime hit a grounder through
the right side to plate a run.
However, right fielder Hailey
Sibert charged the ball and
gunned down the Jaime at
first for the second out. With
the tying run at third, Benson
induced a pop up to short for
the win.
The lady Raiders are a
ways off from competing with
some of the division’s top
teams and fell 10-0 to Hayfork.
Burney brought nine
batters to the plate and Emily
Arnold fanned them all.
Burney dominated U-Prep
for four-and-a-half innings
taking an 11-3 lead into the
bottom of the fifth inning. But
a slight melt down allowed
the Panthers to plate eight
runs and knot the score at
11-all. The lady Raiders
regained the lead in the sixth
and Benson retired the side
in order for the third place
finish.

Case Number 26757
To all heirs, beneficiaries, creditors,
Marie Marty. A Petition for Probate
has been filed by Mary Elizabeth
Mary Elizabeth Conley be appointed
as personal representative
to administer the estate of the
decedent. The petition requests
authority to administer the estate
under the Independent Administration
of Estates Act. (This authority
taking certain very important actions,
however, the personal
representative will be required to
give notice to interested persons
unless they have waived notice
or consented to the proposed
action.) The independent administration
authority will be granted
unless an interested person files
an objection to the petition and
shows good cause why the court
should not grant the authority. A
hearing on the petition will be held
in this court as follows: Date: April
11, 2011 Time: 1:30 PM Dept: 11.
Address of court: 1500 Court St,
Redding, CA 96001. If you object
to the granting of the petition, you
should appear at the hearing and
state your objections or file written
objections with the court before the
hearing. Your appearance may be
in person or by your attorney. If
you are a creditor or a contingent
creditor of the deceased, you must
file your claim with the court and
mail a copy to the personal representative
appointed by the court
within four months from the date of
first issuance of letters as provided
in Probate Code section 9100. The
time for filing claims will not expire
before four months from the hearing
date noticed above. You may
If you are a person interested in the
estate, you may file with the court
a Request for Special Notice (form
DE-154) of the filing of an inventory
and appraisal of estate assets or of
any petition or account as provided
in Probate Code section 1250. A
