Green Globe has a self auditing process that identifies what needs to be done, which assists managers in preparing for better and more efficient ways <strong>of</strong> operating (Rydges Hotel Manager, pers comm. 2008). Happening now Some industries were well advanced in preparing their businesses for the <strong>impacts</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>climate</strong> <strong>change</strong>. <strong>The</strong>se were primarily the large companies. One medium-sized, land-based company identified the following actions being undertaken by their company. <strong>The</strong>y commented that it was good business practice to adopt these procedures irrespective <strong>of</strong> <strong>climate</strong> <strong>change</strong>. Actions in place are: • Carbon <strong>of</strong>f-set bio-sequestration project—funding a tree-planting—community revegetation program aimed at sequestering carbon dioxide . A component <strong>of</strong> all entry fees has been allocated to the preservation and restoration <strong>of</strong> the rainforest. • Applying best practice in plant husbandry to reduce loss <strong>of</strong> habitat, land degradation and control exotic pests and diseases, bio-sequestration technologies and carbon accounting practices. • Education to tourists through an onsite information centre. • Independent audit using accredited carbon dioxide emissions accounting practices to identify current and projected carbon footprints. • Funding ‘Carbon Flux’ research undertaken by James Cook University. 1 1 98
DEVELOPING ADAPTATION AND RESPONSE STRATEGIES—A SCOPING STUDY • Promoting sustainable tourism practices, including preservation <strong>of</strong> wildlife corridors and habitat through the use <strong>of</strong> elevated platforms, ergonomically efficient buildings onsite. • Installation <strong>of</strong> environmentally sensitive waste management systems. • Efficient recycling programs. • Cost effective operational procedures and democratic, self sustaining management practices. • Working with local action groups such as Cassowary Care Group and the local school to identify sites that will protect the biodiversity <strong>of</strong> the area, maintain habitat connectivity, and preserve, protect and rehabilitate degraded rainforest. Need to happen <strong>The</strong> following actions were identified by the participants as beneficial to a sustainable tourist industry in the future (Table 37). In particular, they identified the need for government to take a stronger role in leading the community and for an efficient communication system that included government, operators, researchers and the general community.
