MESSAGE FROM SENSEI
Dear Students
Hi, everyone. How was your summer? I hope all of you had a wonderful
time.
In August, I traveled to Japan to compete in the Wado-Ryu National
Tournament in Tokyo, and I was pleased to bring along two of my students,
Davis Evans and Katsuko Yamanishi. The three of us made it to
the finals with Davis Evans placing third in his kata division. Katsuko
placed top eight in her division, and I placed best six in kata. I believe
we did a great job and I thank you for your support.
In addition, I would like to remind you of a couple of upcoming special
events, we will be hosting a Goju-ryu seminar on September 16th from
6 -8pm at the main dojo, which will be given by Goju-ryu Master Hiro Kobayashi
from Hawaii, he will be teaching us winning kata’s, so I encourage
all of you to attend. The Itosu-Kai Invitational Tournament on September
24th will be held at Soka University, if you haven’t already done
so, please make sure I have your application forms completed a.s.a.p.
Lastly, don't forget to practice your kicks and punches every day to
make your technique strong.
OF THE
MONTH
BY
GREG RUBINSON-
USHIRO-GERI
(Back Kick)
Getting the foot position right with Ushiro-Geri (Back Kick) is crucial. Many students
have a tendency to turn their bodies too much when they are spinning around to do
Ushiro-Geri. This causes the hips to open up too far and, instead of doing a Back kick,
students wind up doing a spinning Side kick.
Here's how to do Ushiro-Gero (Back Kick) correctly:
1) Starting in left fighting stance (Hidari Hanmi Gamae), slide your left foot to the
right directly in front of you so that your legs are crossed.
2) Turn your whole body 180 degrees to the right.
3) Now, while facing the back wall, pick your right leg up and tuck your right knee to your chest like you would to do any other
kick.
4) Look over your right shoulder at your target, but DON'T turn your head all the way around!
5) Tilt you upper body forward and at the same time kick straight back behind you, like a mule kicking someone behind it. Your
toes should face down (not to the side!), and the only part of your foot that should make contact with the target is your heel!
6) Pull the kicking leg back to your chest while still facing the back wall.
7) Then, keeping the (right) kicking leg in the air, turn 180 degrees to the right and put your right leg down in front. You should
now be facing the front again.
It's very important that when you look over your shoulder at your target, you don't turn your head too much. If you do, then your
body will also turn and your hips will open, making you do Sokuto-Geri (Side Kick) instead of Ushiro Geri (Back Kick). So practice
at first without looking over your shoulder at all until you feel yourself hitting the target with your heel while your toes point
down at the floor.
Remember: it's a BACK kick, not a SIDE kick. Keep your body facing fully to the rear while you kick STRAIGHT back and hit the
target with your heel. Have fun!
