Dear Students and Parents,
I hope everyone is having a great time
and enjoying a healthy lifestyle. The
year is ending quickly and it seems everyone
is busy getting ready for the upcoming
holidays. We will be ending the
year with our Annual Junior Dojo Tournament
and Holiday Potluck Party on
Sunday December 5th. I request everyone
to come and attend this event, the
tournament is a great opportunity; especially
for those of you who have not yet
competed, to try out the techniques you
have learned in class, in a safe and less
formal atmosphere. Afterwards, have
fun enjoying games, win prizes and feast
TECHNIQUE TIPS
DEVELOPING A STRONG
PUNCH
At the beginning of every
class, we practice Sonoba-
Zuki (punching in place)
while standing in Naihanchi-Dachi
(Horse Stance).
Here are some tips for developing
a good, strong,
sharp punch:
1) Always punch to the
center-line of your body. If
you have a mirror in front
of you when you’re at the
dojo or practicing at home,
aim for your own stomach.
If you don’t have a mirror,
imagine punching to where
your stomach is if you were
looking in a mirror.
on great food, while making new friends.
Please mark your calendars and be sure
to keep practicing. Parents, we are looking
for volunteers for this event, so if you
have the time, and can spare a few hours,
please let me know as soon as possible.
Any support is always appreciated.
I wish you and your
loved ones a happy and
healthy holiday season.
Sensei
2) Keep your punch
straight by making sure that
your arm stays in contact
with the side of your body as
you thrust the punching arm
out. Don’t let your elbow
come out, and don’t let there
be any space between your
punching arm and your side.
(Do the same for your pulling
arm.)
3) Concentrate on pulling
the arm that is already out
rather than pushing the
punching arm. Build your
speed by trying to pull your
hand back to your side as
fast as possible. At the same
time, let your punching arm
go out. You should think
about putting 70% of your
energy into the pulling the
arm that’s already out and
just 30% into pushing the
punching arm.
4) The power of your
punch comes from its speed,
not by tensing your muscles.
Your arm should stay relaxed
as it comes out and tighten
just for the second of impact.
Then relax again.
Never lose your focus

STUDENT PROFILE-CHIARA GHIDOLI
Hi! My name is Chiara Ghidoli. I am eleven years old and I have been doing karate for
almost four years. I remember when I was young I used to do many different sports
such as: dancing, ice skating, soccer, and swimming. Since my swimming wasn’t good, I
didn’t have a sport for a while. My Dad thought that I should have a sport but I didn’t
want to do all of those sports. Since I wouldn’t choose, he chose for me. He said he
found this karate place and suggested me to try it out, but I had no interest to do karate
at the time. My Dad said that that if I just try it once I could tell him if I like it or
not. After much consideration, I tried it and I actually liked it! In the first few classes
I was very shy. I was nervous going to the classes sometimes because I didn’t know anyone,
but it’s not like that now. I pretty much know everyone. Over the years I started
to get better. In tournaments I was always getting first place. I started to gain confidence and I have many
Spirit Awards. My goal is to make it to black belt. I probably could have never done this without my sensei pushing
me through the whole way. I really enjoy doing karate and I want to do it for the rest of my life.

Frostbite.
TECHNIQUE OF THE
MONTH
Shutõ (Knife - hand)
When the open hand is
used for shutõ, power must
flow into the fingers until
the fingers are tensed and
strong. This applies especially
to the small finger.
Imagine that power is
flowing into the fingers
and then outward from the
outer edge of the palm.
Use this outer surface of
the hand like a knife or
sword to strike the opponent's
arm or leg as he
attacks. It is also effectively
used in attacks to
the opponent's temple, the
side of his neck, or his
ribs. When applying the
knife-hand, snap the forearm
outward from the elbow
joint with
maximum speed
and power.
