Portable Aviation Weather Stations The Coastal Difference: The Coastal team has more experience than any other company in building and deploying aviation stations. Experience should be judged by: 1. The number of systems built and deployed. 2. The number of different types of systems. A variety of configurations proves that the system is truly flexible, easy to upgrade, robust in a multitude of configurations and built for now and the future. 3. The combination of the experience of the people building the systems, along with the length of time they’ve worked together. In the end nothing beats collective experience. Coastal’s Portable Aviation Weather Stations are designed specifically to meet the demands of tactical or rapid deployment use. Built around the rugged WEATHERPAK®, these systems are able to withstand the rigors associated with military and quick deployment missions. Portable Stations are usually tasked with more than just measurements. Rougher handling , such as being thrown out of a military vehicle, air support, and multiple types of data being sent to several different users requires portable advanced technology. Measurements include: • Wind speed and direction • Dew point • Pressure • Temperature • Visibility • Cloud height • Freezing rain, precipitation amount and identification • Lightning detection The software can be LINUX or Windows® and is fully ICAO/FMH-1/WMO compliant. The User Interface is simple to use and intuitive. Coastal’s Tactical Aviation Stations are used by the U.S. Navy, U.S. Air Force, NWS, and FAA, along with the Swedish, French, Polish, Mexican and Peruvian Militaries. Who Depends on Coastal? Katrina Responders…. At ground zero of the widespread chaos surrounding Hurricane Katrina and its aftermath, the four automated weather stations designed and built by Coastal and located at Keesler Air Force Base in Biloxi, Mississippi, were the only known weather stations to survive. They continued functioning perfectly, eventually serving flights landing at Keesler AFB to bring relief supplies to the region.
Custom Aviation Weather Stations Custom stations can be required for a variety of reasons and can usually be accommodated by some basic modifications to existing stations. Measurements can include: • Wind speed and direction • Dew point • Pressure • Temperature • Visibility • Cloud height • Freezing rain • Precipitation amount and identification • Lightning detection • RVR (Runway Visual Range) • Others such as: solar radiation, runway surface condition, redundant sensors, etc. Software can be supplied to either display data or produce METAR/SPECI and other reports automatically. The software can be used in either LINUX or Windows® and is fully ICAO/FMH-1/ WMO compliant. The User Interface is always simple to use and intuitive. The Coastal Difference: U N I V E R S A L INTERFACE S E R I A L A USI is software (firmware) embedded in our ZENO ® -3200 field electronics. Specifically it is a configurable menu driven software that allows you to “tell the ZENO ® ” h o w t o communicate, collect and process data from a serial sensor it has never seen before. Why this is necessary is less obvious – it is necessary because there is no standard protocol for serial sensors. This means the next great new sensor will have its own protocol and be like no other before it! We want you to have all the options and choices in future products. Our goal is to keep the USI current with all relevant serial sensors manufactured in the years to come. No other data acquisition system has USI capability or can make the focused claim we do. Who Depends on Coastal? The South Pole ... Working with the U.S. Navy and the National Science Foundation, Coastal modified one of our standard aviation stations and deployed the first ever aviation weather station to operate and survive at The South Pole station. It was the first time that automated weather for aviation support and safety was ever available. In addition to a constantly harsh environment, The South Pole can get as cold as -90 degrees!
