3. Potential hazards:
Highly inflammable. Deflagrates also in the absence of oxygen.
In case of fire not only the normal gases originate but hydrogen cyanide and nitrous gases as
well. Risk of most severe lung injury.
Explosion of nitrocellulose membranes can be induced by various ignition sources (sparks,
embers, heat) and by shock or friction.
4. First aid:
Swallowing:
Inhalation of fumes:
Skin contact:
Contact with eyes:
General measures:
Medical advice:
Does not apply.
Transport affected persons into fresh air, absolute rest.
Caution, effect may occur with retardation, therefore call a
(emergency) physician immediately in any case, risk of most
severe lung injury!
Does not apply.
Does not apply.
Seek medical advice, bring unconscious person into stable
lateral position and protect against low temperatures; remove
foreign bodies from mouth. In case of respiratory arrest apply
mouth-to-mouth respiration.
After inhalation of fumes injuries should preferably inhale
Glucocorticoide.
5. Measures in case of fire:
Suitable fire extinguishing Only water, sprayed if possible.
agents:
Not suitable:
All powdered extinguishing agents, carbon dioxide, and foam.
Special risks:
Fire gases could include nitrous gases, nitric acid, and
hydrogen cyanide. Risk of shooting flames.
Protective clothing: Respiratory equipment independent from circulated air,
chemical protective clothing (resistant to nitrous gases, nitric
acid, and hydrogen cyanide).
6. Measures in case of unintentional release:
Personal protective Avoid ignition sources.
measures:
Environmental protective Prevent fire-fighting water from entering drains or aquatic
measures:
environments.
Cleaning / picking up: Pick up avoiding friction (spark generation, electrostatic
charge) and place ready for disposal.
7. Handling and storage:
Handling:
Storage:
VCI storage class:
See under Cleaning / picking up.
Protect from heat sources.
Fire and smoking prohibited in all working and storage areas.
Not near heat sources. Close opened packages.
Store membranes without interleaving papers (phlegmator)
separately.
4.1 B
8. Exposition limits and personal protection:
10. Stability and reactivity:
Risk of explosive decay by sources of ignition. Attention necessarily should be paid to the
“Chemical resistance table” (filtration catalog of the manufacturer).
Decomposition products: Nitrous gases, hydrogen cyanide, and the normal fumes.
11. Information on toxicology:
Nitrocellulose is not toxic. No irritations of rabbit skin and eye were observed. Regarding chronic
toxicity, reproduction toxicity, mutagenicity and carcinogenicity no data are available.
The standard rules on work hygiene should be observed.
12. Information on ecology:
No examinations on decomposition, bioaccumulation, mobility, and other ecotoxic properties wer
carried out so far. Based on the chemical structure, rapid decomposition can be supposed, a
potential for bioaccumulation should not be expected.
Self-classification according to VwVwS: WGK (water endangerment category) 1.
13. Disposal:
After consultation of the manufacturer and the relevant local authorities.
