Heat pump technology
Air source heat pumps
Air source heat pumps use basic thermodynamic
principles to convert latent heat contained within
the air we breathe into heat energy that can be
used to provide heating and hot water.
This ‘ambient heat’ is replenished by the sun making our heat
pumps both effective and environmentally friendly.
Fit for the future
With the recent fluctuations in price and supply of fossil fuels,
air source heat pumps offer both an environmentally and
economically sustainable alternative.
Home heating in the UK accounts for approximately 30% of CO2
emissions. The heat source used by Grant Aerona heat pumps
is entirely renewable which helps reduce the amount of harmful
greenhouse gases being released into the atmosphere and, in
so doing, lowers the carbon footprint of the household.
How it works
There are two basic types of air source heat pump - ‘air to air’
and ‘air to water’. Grant Aerona heat pumps use an air to water
system which utilises heat energy captured from the air in 'wet'
heating system radiators or underfloor heating.
The process uses the same vapour/compression cycle that
extracts heat in a domestic fridge. A refrigerant with a low
boiling point is exposed to external air temperatures in an
evaporator. The liquid boils off to a gas and absorbs the latent
heat energy of the air. This gas is then compressed increasing
the heat content in the refrigerant, before passing through a
heat exchanger where it condenses back to a liquid state while
transferring the heat to the water of the heating system. The
liquid refrigerant is then re-circulated through the evaporator and
the cycle is repeated.
Heat pump installation
Typical system layout
The house below shows a Grant Aerona
incorporated into a standard heating system,
comprising heat pump, cylinder, underfloor
heating and radiator circuit.
Grant Solar Thermal is also a good match for air source heat
pumps and when combined using one of Grant’s high efficiency
heat pump cylinders and solar thermal system, can reduce
home heating bills even further.
Green savings
Lower heating costs
Compared with other domestic heating methods, a
Grant Aerona heat pump can benefit homeowners
by creating annual savings on fuel bills.
The units can deliver around four times the amount of energy for
every 1kW of electricity used (depending on the model, at 7°C
air temperature/35°C water temperature).
Homes utilising this type of heat generator will obviously have a
lower dependency on fossil fuels, making them less susceptible
to rising fuel costs.
About ‘Coefficient of Performance’ (COP)
The COP is the ratio of electrical power required to run the heat
pump, compared with the output being produced to heat the
water of the heating system.
Testing is carried out to European and British Standard BSEN14511
and establishes the output and COP at a specific ambient air and
circuit water temperature. This is 7°C for ambient air and 35°C for
water flow temperature. For example, the Grant Aerona ASHE65
model produces 6.5kW at a COP of 4.1, when tested to this level.
This means for every kilowatt (kW) of energy used to run the Aerona,
4.1kW of energy is being given to the heating system in return.
It is important to note that as the outside air gets colder, the output
and COP of an air source heat pump falls, due to the reduced
amount of heat energy available from the air. Conversely, when
outside air temperature rises above 7°C the output and COP will
increase (see performance graphs on pages 7 and 9).
Grant Aerona range
The Aerona
Our original range of single phase air to water
heat pumps, feature weather compensation, dual
temperature controls and a 3kW immersion backup.
The integration of weather compensation with these controls
allows the unit to perform very efficiently, giving a reliable heat
output and using less power, resulting in lower running costs.
The design also makes installation straightforward into either
a new or existing S-plan type system configuration.
The Aerona is available in outputs of 6.5kW, 8.5kW, 11kW and
13kW (Note: this output does not include the immersion back up).
Design
Grant has combined tried and tested technology with
sophisticated control equipment to give customers the benefit
of efficient and reliable renewable heating with every Aerona air
source heat pump.
The performance of a heat pump is affected by outside air
temperature. Grant’s factory fitted weather compensating device
enables Aerona heat pumps to accurately monitor outside
temperature conditions and precisely control its operation,
maximising efficiency.
The units are pre-plumbed and pre-wired with an independent
heating element that automatically provides a boost on the
rare occasion when the air temperature falls to very low levels.
It is also possible to incorporate and control a secondary heat
source with this arrangement e.g. gas, oil-fired, biomass boiler
(Bivalent system).
The Grant Aerona is very compact, requires no additional
storage space for fuel and being sited externally, leaves more
valuable space inside the home. The units come complete
with a galvanised steel casing, featuring a proven high quality
external powder coated paint finish, which protects the internal
components and case from weathering.
Grant Aerona HE range
The Aerona HE
Following the success of the original Aerona air
to water heat pump models, and in response to
comments and ideas from our customers, Grant
UK has developed the Aerona HE range.
The brief for this was straightforward - bigger single phase models,
higher outputs and COPs at lower air temperatures with quieter
noise levels, whilst maintaining the tried and tested features of
the existing Aerona range. The new Aerona HE is available in
6.5kW, 8.5kW, 12.5kW, 17.5kW and 21.5kW outputs (Note: this
does not include the immersion back up).
Design
To achieve better COP’s, and further reduce running costs, the
Aerona HE range was designed with larger evaporator surface
areas, increasing the amount of air flow through the unit. The
fans run at lower speeds and this coupled with the improved
internal insulation has successfully decreased noise levels. The
HE models also use R410a refrigerant, which allows the unit to
operate at lower ambient temperatures.
As with all products in the Aerona range, the models are designed
to be installer friendly and come complete with factory fitted
weather compensation controls, 3kW electrical backup* and
flexible flow and return connections, so there are no hidden extras.
*Note: to fully comply with MIS3005, the backup heater should not be energised until the
minimum design temperature has been reached (e.g. -3°C).
General information
Installation and maintenance
The installation of a Grant Aerona heat pump should be
carried out by a Grant G-One accredited heat pump installer.
More information on this scheme is available from the Grant
UK website.
Servicing should be carried out annually by a qualified heating
engineer. During servicing it is important for the engineer to
ensure that the evaporator matrix is clear of debris as any build
up could significantly affect the performance of the heat pump.
Guarantees
Grant Aerona heat pumps are guaranteed for 2 years from the
date of purchase (excluding consumable items), subject to
being serviced annually and installed in accordance with the
manufacturer’s instructions. This warranty can also be extended
to 5 years for an additional fee. See the Aerona installation
manual for further details.
On completion of the installation all Grant Aerona heat pumps
must be commissioned and registered online at:
www.grantuk.com
Renewable Heat Incentive
Currently in the UK, just under half of our carbon emissions
are created by heating buildings and water. Over 99% of this
is predominantly supplied by fossil fuels and less than 1% by
renewable energy. The proposed Renewable Heat Incentive
(RHI) has been designed by the Department of Energy & Climate
Change (DECC) to alter this way of living, so that by 2020, 12%
of heat is generated by renewable technology, thereby cutting
carbon emissions and allowing the UK to hit its binding EU targets.
From October 2012, the RHI guarantees long-term payments
for the end user on specified renewable installations. It includes
all types of heating, from households to factories and public
sector buildings. The tariffs, which will be annually adjusted
with inflation, will be paid for a number of years to eligible
technologies installed since 15th July 2009 with payments being
made for each kWh of renewable heat produced.
It is important to remember that the end user can only claim
cash-back through the RHI if the product and installer are
both MCS approved. MCS is an independent scheme for the
certification of microgeneration products and installers. It is
designed to assess these products and installers against robust
criteria, which provides greater protection for consumers when
fitting renewable technologies to their property.
Domestic Hot Water
(DHW) Boost kit
Whilst it is possible to raise the DHW to 60°C with
an Aerona heat pump, it can be more efficient to
set the hot water temperature between 45°C and
50°C and utilise Grant’s Domestic Hot Water Boost
kit to take the cylinder up to the desired higher
temperature. This unit comprises an enclosure
with 20A rated contactor, an override switch and relay, which
works with the immersion element fitted in all Grant cylinders.
Sealed system kits
Sealed system kits are available to
suit all heat pump models. The kits
come in either a 12ltr or 18ltr size
