Gary Lee Koontz (’63),<br />
March 26, <strong>2009</strong>, Advance,<br />
NC. He retired in 1995 as vice<br />
president and treasurer of<br />
Integon Corp. He coached in<br />
the Southwest Forsyth Little<br />
League and was involved with<br />
Big Brothers Big Sisters of<br />
Forsyth County. He is survived<br />
by his wife, Jenny; a son, Chris<br />
(’86, MALS ’03) and his wife,<br />
Pat; a grandson, Alex; and a<br />
brother, Reginald (’60).<br />
Mark Wilkes Harrold (MD ’64),<br />

He served in the U.S. Naval<br />
Reserve, did his residency at<br />
Akron City Hospital and joined<br />
Michigan Urology PC, a practice<br />
started by his father. He was<br />
named a fellow at the American<br />
College of Surgeons and served<br />
as chief of staff, urology and<br />
surgery at Ingham Regional<br />
Medical Center. After 35 years<br />
of practice, he retired from the<br />
Lansing Institute of Urology in<br />
2005.<br />

William Herring Shackelford<br />

SC. He served in Vietnam and<br />
received his MBA in 1969 from<br />
the Emory University School<br />
of Business. He was a CPA.<br />
His body was donated to the<br />
<strong>Wake</strong> <strong>Forest</strong> University School<br />
of Medicine.<br />

NC. He served in the U.S.<br />
Navy during the Vietnam War<br />
and had a lifelong career in<br />
the insurance business.<br />

Fair Meeks Rankin (’73),<br />

She received her master’s in<br />
biochemistry from the University<br />
of North Dakota. She<br />
entered the MD program at the<br />
Uniformed Services University<br />
of the Health Sciences and later<br />
enrolled in the PhD program<br />
for research. She served in the<br />
U.S. Army and obtained the<br />
rank of captain before retiring<br />
in 1986. She received the Army<br />
Commendation Medal for her<br />
service as a clinical chemist.<br />
She studied and worked in the<br />
department of neuroscience<br />
at the University of Minnesota<br />
until 2006.<br />

Rebecca Ann Stallings<br />

the N.C. Division of Services<br />
for the Blind for 31 years in<br />
various capacities. She was<br />
a social worker, vocational<br />
rehabilitation counselor,<br />
children’s program consultant<br />
and counselor-in-charge.<br />

served in the U.S. Marine<br />
Corps. She is remembered as<br />
a master automotive mechanic,<br />
storyteller, sports car racer<br />
and painter.<br />
Robert David Bogaty (’78),<br />
March 7, <strong>2009</strong>, Norwell, MA.<br />
He received his master’s from<br />
the University of Pittsburgh<br />
and was the director of development<br />
for Puma in Taiwan. He<br />
ran the Boston Marathon twice.<br />
He is survived by his wife, Jane;<br />
two children, Andrew and<br />
Martha; and two brothers,<br />
Raymond (’70) and Richard.<br />
Gary Keith Bryson (MD ’79),<br />
March 25, <strong>2009</strong>, Lexington,<br />
NC. His internship and residency<br />
was in obstetrics and<br />
gynecology at Erlanger<br />
Medical Center in Chattanooga,<br />
TN. He was a leader<br />
in the development of the<br />
surgical technique laparoscopic<br />
appendectomy and<br />
made presentations at the<br />
World Congress Meeting of<br />
the American Association of<br />
Gynecologic Laparoscopists<br />
in Washington, D.C. He was a<br />
fellow of the American<br />
Society for Laser Medicine<br />
and Surgery, served as a<br />
clinical instructor at Vanderbilt<br />
University, was an adjunct<br />
professor at Western Kentucky<br />
University, was a clinical<br />
consultant for laser and surgical<br />
instrument manufacturers,<br />
and was a faculty and clinical<br />
advisor for hospital laser<br />
surgery centers.<br />

Deborah Leonard Parker<br />
(JD ’83), April 24, <strong>2009</strong>,<br />
Winston-Salem, NC. She was<br />
formerly an associate dean<br />
at the <strong>Wake</strong> <strong>Forest</strong> School of<br />
Law. A native of Raleigh, NC,<br />
she received her undergraduate<br />
and master’s degrees from<br />
UNC-Greensboro. She taught<br />
history at Dudley High School<br />
in Greensboro for five years<br />
before attending the <strong>Wake</strong><br />
<strong>Forest</strong> School of Law. In 1984,<br />
she joined the law school faculty<br />
to teach Legal Research<br />
and Writing and later became<br />
the first director of legal<br />
research and writing. In 2000,<br />
she became the school’s first<br />
dean of students. She is survived<br />
by her husband, Professor<br />
of Law J. Wilson Parker;<br />
and three children, Laurel,<br />
Jeffrey and Adam, a rising<br />
senior at <strong>Wake</strong> <strong>Forest</strong>.<br />

Walter J. Bo, March 21, <strong>2009</strong>,<br />
Winston-Salem, NC. He was an<br />
esteemed professor emeritus<br />
of neurobiology and anatomy<br />
who taught for nearly 50 years<br />
at the <strong>Wake</strong> <strong>Forest</strong> School of<br />
Medicine. A native of Minnesota,<br />
he received his bachelor’s<br />
and master’s degrees from<br />
Marquette University and his<br />
doctorate from the University<br />
of Cincinnati in 1953. He<br />
taught at the University of<br />
North Dakota-Grand Forks<br />
until 1960 when he joined the<br />
faculty at the Bowman Gray<br />
School of Medicine. Over the<br />
next 47 years, he taught human<br />
anatomy to hundreds of medical<br />
students. In 1980, he collaborated<br />
on The Basic Atlas of<br />
Sectional Anatomy, a medical<br />
reference book. He received<br />
the Alpha Omega Alpha Robert<br />
J. Glaster Distinguished<br />
Teaching Award in 2001 and<br />
numerous other teaching and<br />
distinguished faculty awards. A<br />
scholarship was established at<br />
the medical school in his name<br />
in 2000. When he was named<br />
professor emeritus in 2007, he<br />
was honored as “the quintessential<br />
educator, mentor and<br />
scholar” who had “an immeasurable<br />
impact on thousands of<br />
physicians and scientists.” He<br />
is survived by his wife, Jeanice;<br />
three daughters, Karen Eklund,<br />
Kathy Lane and Mary Chavis;<br />
and six grandchildren. Memorials<br />
may be made to the Walter<br />
J. Bo Scholarship at the <strong>Wake</strong><br />
<strong>Forest</strong> University School of<br />
Medicine or to St. Leo the<br />
Great Catholic Church in<br />
Winston-Salem.<br />
Regina M. Burt, Feb. 28,<br />
<strong>2009</strong>, Charlotte, NC. She was<br />
preceded in death by her husband,<br />
Richard L. Burt, former<br />
chairman of obstetrics and<br />
gynecology at the Bowman<br />
Gray School of Medicine,<br />
and a son, Jonathan. She is<br />
survived by three children:<br />
Duncan, Deborah King (’72),<br />
and Priscilla Coe; and a granddaughter.<br />
