Honorary degrees<br />

Eight honorary degrees were<br />

awarded during Commencement<br />

on May 18, including one to<br />

the late NBC News journalist<br />

Tim Russert, who was awarded<br />

a posthumous Doctor of Humane<br />

Letters degree. Honorary degrees also<br />

were awarded to:<br />

Vice President Joe Biden, Doctor of<br />

Laws degree.<br />

Frank Brown Holding (’52), executive vice<br />

chairman and director of First Citizens Bank<br />

and Trust Co. of South Carolina, Doctor of<br />

Laws degree.<br />

Allen Joines, mayor of Winston-Salem,<br />

Doctor of Laws degree.<br />

Dr. Richard David Krugman, vice chancellor<br />

for health affairs, dean, and professor<br />

of pediatrics at the University of Colorado<br />

School of Medicine, Doctor of Science degree.<br />

He delivered the address at the School of<br />

Medicine’s hooding ceremony.<br />

The Rev. Barbara K. Lundblad, Joe R.<br />

Engle Professor of Preaching at Union<br />

Theological Seminary in New York City,<br />

Doctor of Divinity degree. She delivered the<br />

Baccalaureate address.<br />

John Willard Marriott Jr., chairman and<br />

chief executive officer of Marriott International,<br />

Doctor of Laws degree. He delivered<br />

the address at the hooding ceremony for the<br />

Graduate Schools of Business.<br />

Lt. Gen. Eric B. Schoomaker, U.S. Army<br />

surgeon general, Doctor of Science degree.<br />

He delivered the address at the hooding<br />

ceremony for the Graduate School of Arts<br />

and Sciences.<br />
