completion of the installation
of the final section of the
power network,which will
enable the Channel Tunnel Rail Link trains to run from London to
Europe at up to 300kph. Working closely with main contractor Birse
Power Networks (a Balfour Beatty Company) and suppliers including
3M – which has provided many of the joints and terminations used
in the project – Davor and his colleagues have created a highly
advanced power system that will see the High Speed 1 through to its
completion,on time and within budget. This is despite it being one of
the most challenging rail projects of recent times.
‘The second section of the rail link – from Fawkham to St Pancras
– brought new challenges for us’said Davor.‘In many places,it goes
deep under London and therefore travels in tunnels. This meant
several demanding requirements and limitations on the
specifications of the 25 kV power cable joints and terminations that
provide the traction power for the train derived from the 400kV
National Grid network and distributed through London Tunnels.’

Ltd, said:‘The High Speed 1 railway,from the Channel Tunnel to St.
Pancras International is the first new railway to be built in the UK for
over a century.This meant we were breaking new ground.Taking
25kV and 11kV supplies through tunnels to meet strict 21st century
safety regulations meant specifying joints and terminations which no
supplier stocked as standard product. Fortunately,3M met the
challenge with modifications to its Cold Shrink joints and
terminations,and by incorporating other products from the 3M
arsenal of innovative technology.’

single-skin translucent
GRP rooflights to brighten
areas of Network Rail’s
Paragon Station in Hull.
The new translucent rooflights provide optimum levels of
diffused natural daylight and more than satisfy all the required
safety levels.
These 32/1000 profile (Class 1 fire rating) rooflights were installed
by Ross Wright Ltd and C.Spencer Ltd were the Design & Build
contractors for this major refurbishment project.
Trilite Ultra sheets are supplied with Superlife enhanced UV
surface protection to minimise the harmful effects of the sun
and ultra-violet radiation.Translucent GRP rooflights were
specified because they limit glare and give a more even
distribution of diffused daylight with minimal shadow effects.
Trilite Ultra 36 sheets have also been installed as vertical
lantern lights below the station’s steeply pitched main roof
areas and at the gable ends.

to a fully networked fire
detection and alarm
system at Edinburgh
Waverley station.
A fully networked
fire detection and alarm
system has been
developed and installed for Network Rail,providing centralised
control of fire monitoring at Edinburgh Waverley station,as part of a
major enhancement programme.In excess of 500 Hochiki
detection devices have been integrated into the system by
specialist contractors, Dante Fire & Security, and the system
comprises four main panels from Advanced Electronics.
Central to the network’s system design is the flexibility to
accommodate cause-and-effect scenarios within complex fire
strategies. For such a demanding project, system reliability and
integrity are of paramount concern, and Dante affirms that
‘Hochiki’s warranted product quality and reliability’ were
deciding factors in determining Hochiki as the preferred
technology for this prestigious installation programme.
The quality assured,interference-free performance of Hochiki’s
ESP range detectors is just one aspect of the efficient functionality
demanded of the installation by the Network Rail specifiers.
