This is despite it being one of the most challenging rail projects of recent times. ‘The second section of the rail link – from Fawkham to St Pancras – brought new challenges for us’said Davor.‘In many places,it goes deep under London and therefore travels in tunnels. The new translucent rooflights provide optimum levels of diffused natural daylight and more than satisfy all the required safety levels. A fully networked fire detection and alarm system has been developed and installed for Network Rail,providing centralised control of fire monitoring at Edinburgh Waverley station,as part of a major enhancement programme.In excess of 500 Hochiki detection devices have been integrated into the system by specialist contractors, Dante Fire & Security, and the system comprises four main panels from Advanced Electronics. PRODUCTS AND SERVICES NOMAD DIGITAL TECHNOLOGY company Nomad Digital has bought QinetiQ Rail in a deal which values Nomad at more than US$100m and sees it teaming up with a global player in the security and defence markets. The deal will allow the Newcastle-based company to accelerate the roll-out of its technology,which allows wireless broadband connections to and from moving trains,even in tunnels. QinetiQ Rail is the commercial rail division of QinetiQ,one of the world’s leading defence and security technology companies that grew out of the Ministry of Defence’s research labs.QinetiQ has sold QinetiQ Rail to Nomad Digital for 8.6 per cent of Nomad's ordinary share capital,and retains a further interest in the company with the purchase of £1.5m of Nomad preference shares. QinetiQ will now use Nomad as a key channel partner for providing products and services to the rail industry. OCS Transport – the specialist division of the £600 million property services group – has won the contract for ensuring there is a continuous cleaning service on the Eurostar as it travels at speeds up to 186mph (300km/h) on the journey. The high-speed cleaners will support Eurostar’s on-train personnel by prioritising their activities to suit the particular circumstances at every stage of the journey. In addition to providing proficient, continuous cleaning duties, the thirteenstrong OCS team have also been trained to high levels of customer service in recognition of their front-line contact with Eurostar passengers. ‘We are very proud to have been chosen for this unique international contract’ said Martin Gammon, managing director OCS Transport Division.‘We have been entrusted by Eurostar with using a high degree of initiative and flexibility in meeting the needs of their customers throughout the journey.
