EU funds for innovativeness are not only direct
investment subsidies for companies. There will
also be accessible money for the development
of research in companies, the cooperation of enterprises
with research units, the development of
cooperation between companies (clusters, technological
parks, industrial parks). Entrepreneurs
may also use programmes realized directly by
the European Union – e.g. the 7th Framework
Programme for Research and Technological Development.

IT with design create business
Another edition of the student technological contest
has started - Imagine Cup 2008. It is organized
by Microsoft in a changed formula this year. „We
would like interdisciplinary teams to participate in
the category of software projecting. It is about linking
technology with design,” says Elżbieta Opiła
from the Institute of Industrial Design, cooperating
with the organizer. The aim of the contest is to
transform the best projects into market products.
Participants will be trained on self-presentation,
marketing and business establishment. The winner
of the Polish edition will go to the world final in Paris.
Projects may be sent in by the end of January
2008. The best one with regard to business will be
assessed by experts from Venture Capital fund.

Inventions will be applied via the Internet
From 1st November 2007 an amendment to the
act Industrial property right is binding. “Rzeczpospolita”
talked about the most important changes
appearing in the act with Alicja Adamczak, the
president of the Patent Office. The changes enabled
online applying for the protection of inventions
and trademarks. Is it a good solution? “I am
a passionate supporter of this solution,” – says
Alicja Adamczak. “So far applications have been
filed personally or by mail or fax, however in the
last two cases the original document had to be delivered
to the Office within 30 days from the posting
date. The exception to this rule constituted applications
for the European patent that could have
been filed electronically for two years. This situation
will change with regard to all applications filed
in the Patent Office on the day of the implementation
of the amendment to the act Industrial property
right. It will make it possible for entrepreneurs,
all applicants to apply online. It will be a significant
simplification since it will be possible to compete
for preference in obtaining protection even in the
situation of the residence abroad. E-mail will also
be a quick communication path, correspondence
exchange with the Office.”

Beginning with the next year entrepreneurs will
settle taxes in the Internet
The beginning of 2008 is to bring revolutionary
changes in contacts of entrepreneurs with inland
revenues – as we can read in „Dziennik”. Entrepreneurs
will be able to settle taxes for 2007 via
the Internet through the e-Deklaracje system. From
1st of January 2008, 39 types of tax declarations
will be able to be filed electronically; it will not be
mandatory. It will be done by those who are used to
using the Internet tools and who will make at least
basic e-signature (the cost of at least 300 zlotys).
It will be also possible to use a tax adviser’s e-signature.

More money for research
Research units will be able to obtain additional
means from public aid for research projects. The
condition of obtaining money from public aid for
scientific cooperation with foreign units will be a
positive opinion of an application on granting the
means. The changes have been introduced by the
ordinance of the minister of science and higher education
on criteria and the process of granting and
settling of financial means for science, designated
for the financing of scientific work abroad (Journal
of Laws 188, item 1346). The granted means
may be passed as a whole or in parts to scientific
units or other authorized entities. Unused means
in a given calendar year may be spent in the following
years. However, they will not be able to be
adjusted.
