Vice-Chancellor’s welcome 

I am delighted to welcome you to 

the University of Canterbury. 

It is a pleasure to have this opportunity to show 

you what makes the UC experience unique for our

New Zealand universities.

Speakers 

Dr Jim Dragna 

Student Success Manager 

Through an engaging blending 

of cross cultural story-telling 

and cognitive psychology 

formulations, Dr Dragna will 

talk about the successful 

transition of students from 

secondary school to tertiary 

education. His topic is: What 

Were You Thinking? A Guide to 

Understanding the Adolescent 

and Young Adult Mind. 

Dr Dragna is from the United 

States where he was involved 

in tertiary education as an 

administrator, consultant, 

lecturer and mental health 

provider for more than 

twenty-five years. A licensed 

psychologist, he specialises 

in the treatment and 

development of adolescents 

and young adults. He has an 

undergraduate degree from 

the University of Notre Dame 

with master’s and doctorate 

degrees from the University of 

Colorado, Boulder, in the field of 

counseling psychology.

The Emerging Leaders 

Development Programme 

(ELDP) is a year-long student-led 

leadership programme offered 

to Emerging Leaders, Dr. Ngau 

Boon Keat and Dux scholarship 

recipients at UC. 

The leadership programme 

consists of five parts including: 

a residential retreat, group 

service learning projects, 

leadership forums, student 

team dinners, as well as a 

yearend celebration. 

Brad Harasymchuk is currently 

a PhD student in the College 

of Education as well as the 

coordinator of the Emerging 

Leaders Development 

Programme. 

Dr Billy O’Steen 

Senior Lecturer 


Dr O’Steen will discuss the 

emerging UC Graduate 

Profile and how this links to 

employability skills. Within this 

wider framework he will talk 

about students’ experiential 

learning through the 

Christchurch 101 programme, 

the benefits and how this sets 

UC students apart. 

Dr O’Steen holds a PhD from 

the University of Virginia and, 

prior to working at UC he 

was involved in a number of 

projects including teaching 

English at a secondary school in 

Tennessee and two community 

colleges in California, and 

facilitating multi-cultural 

education programs in Brazil 

and Tennessee. 

At UC Dr O’Steen’s teaching and 

research focuses on curriculum 

design, higher education, and 

professional development 

with a particular emphasis on 

experiential education and 

service learning.

Programme information 

School of Business 

and Economics 

Join the Dean of Commerce, Dr Ross James, 

for an update on the latest developments and 

some exciting new degree offerings for 2014. 

Associate Dean of Commerce, Neil Crombie, will 

provide an update on the changes for students 

wishing to pursue a career in accounting. 

Economics lecturer Steve Agnew will talk 

about his research paper “Transitioning from 

Year 13 to first year: the behaviour of first year 

economics students”, due to be presented at the 

Australasian Teaching Economics Conference in 

July. Student advisors will be on hand to discuss 

other majors and programmes. 

College of Arts 

Dr Bronwyn Hayward and Associate Professor 

Michael Grimshaw will discuss what it is to be an 

arts student at UC. What are they about? What 

can they expect when they choose to study arts 

at UC? What do we do to give them the best 

study experience we can? Following this there will 

be an opportunity to view an exhibition at the 

Campus Gallery. The exhibition is a collaboration 

between art history and fine arts students and 

will feature a talk followed by a short tour of the 

School of Fine Arts’ studios. 

College of Engineering 

Join the Dean of Engineering, Professor Conan 

Fee, for an update on engineering and forestry 

science degrees for 2014. Then take some time 

to view a range of final year projects and work 

undertaken by students across the engineering 

disciplines, computer science and mathematics 

and statistics. There will be an opportunity to 

talk to students about their work, discuss the 

background to their projects and discover more 

about their time at UC. 


Associate Professor Chris Gallavin, Dean of 

Law, will talk about the development of the 

School of Law in the post-quake Canterbury 

environment in which students will play a 

pivotal role in supporting the community, the 

profession of law and the wider commercial and 

cultural community. With great need comes the 

opportunity for law students to show leadership, 

help the community which will provide a strong 

point of difference in the commercial world 

come graduation. His talk will emphasise the 

opportunities for law students and graduates 

at UC. 

College of Science 

Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Science), Professor Wendy 

Lawson, will give an overview of the range of 

degrees and majors available and what makes 

UC science different. Academic staff will outline 

the opportunities available to students majoring 

in biological sciences and biochemistry, including 

the endorsements of ecology, environmental 

science, biotechnology and biosecurity. 

Specialists from communication disorders will 

provide a session covering speech and language 

pathology and audiology. We will finish with 

information on research areas in psychology, 

including applied and clinical psychology. 


The Bachelor of Sport Coaching is undergoing 

considerable change and in 2014 students will 

be able to select a specialisation (performance 

analysis, for example) or study the programme 

by distance, if desired. The new Bachelor of 

Health Sciences degree was launched in 2013 

and interest is growing rapidly. Come and hear 

how this new degree is preparing students 

for employment in the rapidly growing health 

sciences sector.
