The skies above Jersey come alive to the sights and sounds of international<br />

military and civilian aircraft performing in breath-taking formation teams<br />

and skilful solo aerobatic demonstrations and it is all FREE!<br />

The display takes place over the picturesque St Aubin’s Bay on Jersey’s<br />

south coast, a perfect natural amphitheatre for display aircraft with the<br />

sea and Elizabeth Castle offering a dramatic backdrop.<br />

Activities on the ground include static displays in People’s Park. People’s<br />

Park is just a short walk away from the display arena and gives visitors the<br />

opportunity to check out aircraft close up and to have a chat with the crews.<br />

Jersey Live is the biggest annual music event in the Channel Islands, and<br />

one of the finest boutique festivals in Europe! After six storming editions<br />

featuring dance and indie stars such as Kasabian, The Prodigy, Razorlight,<br />

2ManyDJs and Snow Patrol, the festival returns on <strong>September</strong> 4th and 5th,<br />

Every year Jersey Tourism host their Autumn Walking Week, featuring an<br />

abundance of escorted walks covering the island’s countryside, coastal tracks and<br />

diverse history. There are over 40 walks to choose from, and ALL of these walks<br />

are FREE. Experience a feast of food and culture as you see, smell and savour island<br />

life. Stroll along the seaside, through woodland, country lanes and clifftop paths, all<br />

Discover another side of Edmund Blampied, and unearth<br />

a hidden treasure of dainty drawings and charming<br />

illustrations. Before he gained worldwide recognition as a<br />

Turret Bunker<br />

One of the few surviving examples, named<br />

sechsschartentürme (literally “six-shooting turret”)<br />

bunkers once proliferated along the Atlantic Wall. It is<br />

possible to access the interior of the cupola, equipped<br />

with a deactivated MG34 machine-gun, and peer<br />

through the optics to see a landscape viewed as a<br />

potential invasion point by the German garrison.<br />

Something of a time capsule when reopened in 1985;<br />

the bunker has since been restored to pristine condition,<br />

the island’s history and culture, and usually a refreshment<br />

stop to recharge the batteries or to allow visitors to set<br />

off exploring on their own. Touching on tradition, farming<br />

The command post for the naval coastal artillery battery<br />

‘Lothringen’ was located here. The bunker has been<br />

restored to a very high standard and provides a unique<br />

military engineering. The Artillery Observation Tower<br />

situated alongside, may also be open on selected dates.<br />

‘The Flicks’ at Jersey War Tunnels<br />

Come along to the evocative surroundings of the Jersey<br />

War Tunnels to watch classic movies and vintage shorts<br />

on DVD or 16mm film. Twice monthly from June to<br />

<strong>October</strong>, the films (from the collection of Chris Feltham)<br />

will be shown at the Welcome Centre or the Tunnel<br />

entrance and will be introduced by a guest speaker.<br />

New experiences at Jersey War Tunnels to mark the 65th Anniversary of Liberation<br />

Jersey War Tunnels is a permanent<br />

reminder of the five dark years of<br />

German Occupation, detailing a true<br />

and accurate account of the period<br />

through the experiences of the people<br />

who were there.<br />

New galleries for <strong>2010</strong><br />

In addition to the ‘Captive Island’<br />

exhibition the tunnel complex, formerly<br />

known as Höhlgangsanlage 8 (Ho8),<br />

now plays host to two new experiences<br />

which look at the Occupation in a new<br />

light, paying particular attention to the<br />

plight of individuals by detailing how<br />

decisions made by the Island, UK and<br />

German administrations drastically<br />

affected the course of this period for<br />

the residents struggling to come to<br />

terms with the adverse conditions<br />

of Occupation.<br />

‘Co-operation and Resistance’ is a<br />

hard-hitting experience that focuses<br />

the mind on the countless moral<br />

dilemmas faced. You are placed in the<br />

shoes of Islanders and politicians as<br />

you are asked to make up your own<br />

mind about the decisions, views and<br />

perceptions that could carry<br />

devastating consequences.<br />

‘Liberation’ begins by immersing the<br />

visitor into the desperation and<br />

confusion of the last months of<br />

Occupation, being followed by the<br />

exhilaration and majesty of Liberation<br />

Day on 9 May 1945, particularly<br />

pertinent this year as the Island<br />

celebrates the 65th Anniversary. Moving<br />

out of this gallery the visitor is then taken<br />

into a reflective space detailing the days<br />

and months after Liberation as Islanders<br />

began to piece together the lives that<br />

they had left behind five years previously.<br />

The tunnel complex of Ho8, which took<br />

almost three years to build, was<br />

designed as an armaments workshop<br />

and bomb proof barracks. It was<br />

excavated by forced and slave labourers<br />

from all over Europe, some of whom died<br />

from the terrible hardship they were<br />

made to endure.<br />

Towards the end of 1943, amid fears of<br />

an Allied invasion of Europe, Ho8 was<br />

converted into a casualty receiving<br />

station or underground hospital; its<br />

rooms were transformed into wards to<br />

accommodate up to 500 casualties and<br />

included a fully equipped operating<br />

theatre. The invasion never occurred, so<br />

the tunnel complex was never used for<br />

this purpose.<br />

Jersey War Tunnels is more than<br />

a chronicle of life under occupation.<br />

Above the tunnels, the evocative<br />

landscape of the Garden of Reflection is<br />

a permanent reminder of the Jersey men<br />

and women who died as a direct<br />

consequence of the Occupation;<br />

each person is commemorated by<br />

a steel plaque set into the lawns<br />

and flower-beds.<br />

Adjacent to Ho8 is the War Trail,<br />

a series of pathways through an antiaircraft<br />

battery which was strategically<br />

located to protect the eastern approach<br />

to the airport. You can walk amongst the<br />

crawl trenches, troop shelters and gun<br />

positions that formed the perimeter<br />

defences of this unique site.<br />

The Garden of Reflection and War Trail<br />

are free to visit along with the Visitor<br />

Centre, which contains the Shop and<br />

the Café.<br />

Complementing the Garden of<br />

Reflection is a sculpture by<br />

internationally renowned artist, Paul de<br />

Monchaux. Entitled ‘Silence’, it was<br />

commissioned to commemorate the<br />

suffering endured by forced and slave<br />

labourers who worked on the<br />

construction of the Ho8 complex and<br />

serves as a powerful reminder of the<br />

German Occupation of Jersey.<br />

To further enhance your visit, Jersey War<br />

Tunnels now offer audio guide tours, the<br />

first of their kind in Jersey. The key<br />

feature of the handheld audio devices,<br />

which are available in English, French<br />

and German, are the interactive buttons<br />

that allow users to make a series of<br />

ethical judgments as they walk around,<br />

putting themselves in the shoes of those<br />

Occupied and forced to make a number<br />

of life changing decisions. Jersey War<br />

Tunnels is a unique attraction that helps<br />

Jersey’s rich heritage of apple cultivation and cider making<br />

extracted on a twin-screw wooden press. Last year’s<br />

On the 5th May 1985, Jersey Pearl<br />

opened its doors to the world.<br />

Since the Jersey Pearl family started the business 25<br />

years ago, the pearl industry has seen huge<br />

developments both in terms of its levels of<br />

production, as well as the styles and colours now<br />

Freshwater pearls, which are grown in large mussels,<br />

are naturally found in shades ranging from warm<br />

white through to blush pink<br />

and pale purple, nowadays<br />

are also being dyed after<br />

harvesting to create the<br />

rainbow colours, from<br />

freshwater pearl- traditionally<br />

round, oval or pear-drop<br />

shape, the farms in China,<br />

where the majority of the<br />

Freshwater pearls are grown,<br />

are now able to create<br />

irregular and unusual<br />

shaped pearls such as the<br />

Keshi pearl - which is<br />

commonly described as the<br />

cornflake pearl as well as the<br />

Biwa pearl, a delicate and<br />

elegant long stick shape.<br />

Jersey Pearl has always worked very closely with their<br />

suppliers all around the world, making sure that it is<br />

only the highest quality pearls that reach the shop<br />

The museum is housed in a former German bunker which<br />

once formed part of Hitler’s Atlantic Wall defences. All the<br />

rooms and corridors are full of artefacts left over from the<br />

occupation and the bunker still stands dominant over the<br />

beach today, showing visitors what it was like during the war.<br />

The museum recently celebrated its 20th anniversary and to<br />

mark that milestone it added many previously unseen items<br />

The tunnel complex, formerly known as Höhlgangsanlage<br />

8 (Ho8) now plays host to a series of thought provoking<br />

contemporary galleries detailing the German Occupation<br />

of Jersey during the Second World War. Explore over a<br />

kilometre of underground tunnels that took three years<br />

to build by a workforce of hundreds of forced and slave<br />

labourers. Visitors will be led through events of evacuation,<br />

deportation, captivity and siege, to eventual liberation.<br />

This spectacularly located headland ruin is thought to<br />

date from the 14th century. To the south is Le Pinacle, a<br />

200ft (61m) high rock, which featured as an object of<br />

worship and a ceremonial site for thousands of years.<br />

This lighthouse, situated on the south-west corner<br />

of the island, was the first concrete lighthouse in the<br />

Le Don Hilton, or La Caumine à Marie Best as it is also<br />

known, is an old guard house beside the beach in St<br />

Ouen’s Bay. It is also called the “white cottage” due to<br />

its distinctive whitewashed walls and it was used as a<br />

landmark for sailors. Surrounded by thrift in spring and<br />

sea lavender in summer, this fabulous site can be hired<br />

from the National Trust for Jersey on a day basis.<br />

The lowest of the group of watermills located along St<br />

Peter’s Valley, the mill has undergone important renovation<br />

Areas of natural interest<br />

La Lande de Ouest<br />

Part of the dry coastal heathland lying above the cliffs<br />

along the greater part of the south-west coast. A<br />

designated Site of Special Interest (SSI) and rich in flora<br />

and fauna, this area is an important part of the island’s<br />

landscape and biodiversity. A great area for walking and<br />

birdwatching.<br />

Le Noir Pré<br />

Often known simply as “The Orchid Field”, this unique<br />

site actually consists of two distinct but adjoining<br />

wet meadows, Le Noir Pré, and the smaller Le Clos<br />

du Seigneur. The site is one of the last remaining<br />

strongholds of the Jersey Orchid or loose-flowered<br />

Orchid (Orchis laxiflora). Orchid flowering season May<br />

and June.<br />

Les Blanches Banques<br />

The sand dune system at the southern end of St Ouen’s<br />

Bay is recognised as an SSI and more than 400 plant<br />

species have been recorded here. It also provides home<br />

to the super Jersey Green Lizard.<br />

Les Landes<br />

This coastal heathland is the most spectacular aspect of<br />

Jersey’s wild environments. Les Landes is Jersey’s largest<br />

single expanse of maritime heathland covering 160<br />

hectares and bound by 3km of high granite cliffs.<br />

Portelet Common<br />

With a mixture of dramatic sea views and a habitat<br />

typical of an area subjected to the prevailing southwesterly<br />

wind, the common has thick gorse cover, dwarf<br />

shrub heathland and lichen-rich grassland. Peaking at<br />

sixty one metres above sea level and covering thirty one<br />

hectares, this scenery is not to be missed.<br />

Ramsar Sites<br />

These are areas listed on the Ramsar List of Wetlands<br />

of International Importance which concerns the<br />

conservation and wise use of wetlands and their<br />

resources. Jersey has four! These magnificent sites<br />

are; the south-east coast of Jersey, Les Minquiers, Les<br />

Écréhous and Les Dirouilles, and Les Pierres de Lecq<br />

(The Paternosters). These sites are truly unique and<br />

well worth a visit; however, three of these sites are<br />

offshore reefs and require a trip by boat. Check out<br />

the “Activities” section for operators who can take<br />

you on a short boat trip to see these sites. The south<br />

coast area can be walked around and guided walks<br />

are available (contact Jersey Walk Adventures – see<br />

“Activities”). Important! If you wish to walk around the<br />

area independently please seek advice first as the tide<br />

rises rapidly and you can become stranded if unprepared.<br />

Knowledge of the tides is essential. Jersey Tourism can<br />

provide advice if necessary but recommends that you<br />

employ a guide. See “Walking” section of this guide.<br />

Reservoirs<br />

There are several reservoirs within the island which can<br />

be walked around. These include Queen’s Valley and Val<br />

de la Mare. Other reservoirs include Millbrook, Grands<br />

Vaux, Handois, Mourier Valley and Dannemarche.<br />

St Catherine’s Woods<br />

Also known as Rozel Woods, this woodland is set in a<br />

deep-cut, steep-sided valley. A stream running through<br />

the valley floor has helped develop a wide range of<br />

habitats within the woodland.<br />

St Ouen’s Pond<br />

(La Mare au Seigneur)<br />

Probably the most significant wetland in Jersey, it is a<br />

dedicated nature reserve with open water, reed beds and<br />

a marshy perimeter providing habitats for fish, insects,<br />

flowers and birds, including the Marsh Harrier which can<br />

often be seen gliding above the pond.<br />

National Trust’s Nature Reserve and you may even see<br />

the marsh harriers which nest here. There is a host<br />

of birds, insects – butterflies, dragonflies and other<br />

creepy-crawlies to see on this walk so don’t forget your<br />

binoculars!<br />

the stunning and colourful gardens of ‘Les Vaux’ with its<br />

own nature reserve, peacocks and red squirrels and Rozel<br />

Manor with its varied garden of palms, wild areas, a lake<br />

and a private chapel.<br />

Take a maritime meander around St Helier’s vibrant<br />

and busy port, which includes a visit to the Lifeboat<br />

Station. Most of the harbour was built in the 19th<br />

century and designed for wooden sailing boats. Hear<br />

about the coming of paddle steamers that brought our<br />

first tourists, and the SS Vega that brought salvation to<br />

starving islanders during the Occupation and see the<br />

Florence and the Jesse: sailing boats given by Jesse Boot,<br />

island resident and founder of Boots the Chemist.<br />

The Side to Side<br />

This cross island odyssey heads east to west passing<br />

through nine of the island’s prettiest valleys and past<br />

three of the largest reservoirs. The route uses woodland<br />

paths and quiet country lanes as much as possible. Day<br />

1 starts from Gorey, through Queen’s Valley, past La<br />

Hougue Bie, Vallée des Vaux, Fern Valley and Waterworks<br />

Valley to St Lawrence Church. Day 2 heads past the War<br />

Tunnels, through St Peter’s Valley passing some National<br />

Trust properties and then onto Val de la Mare and onto<br />

the Atlantic breakers of St Ouen’s Bay.<br />

pot or a shell necklace and find out how the<br />

Neolithic house is made. There will also be a chance<br />

A team of professional lifeguards patrol key beaches from mid May to the end of <strong>September</strong>. Look out for the red<br />

and yellow flags which indicate the patrolled areas for swimming. Swim within the flags, but note that when a red<br />

flag is flying the conditions are dangerous and unsuitable for swimming. Jersey has some of the largest tidal flows in<br />

the world so take care when bathing or exploring the seashore. The beach lifeguard team is only too happy to advise<br />

swimmers regarding beach safety, please ask. The beaches patrolled are: St Ouen’s Bay, St Brelade’s Bay, Grève de<br />

Lecq, Plémont and Havre des Pas.<br />

Buses operate throughout the island from the new bus<br />

terminal at Liberation Station, St Helier. There is a regular<br />

bus service between the airport at St Peter and St Helier.<br />

Explorer tickets<br />

Take advantage of the local bus service by purchasing<br />

an Explorer ticket, allowing unlimited travel during your<br />

stay. Tickets are valid for consecutive day travel only.<br />

Parking<br />

Parking in Jersey requires the pre-purchase<br />

of parking scratchcards, or paycards, from<br />

Jersey Tourism, post offices, garages and<br />

shops island-wide, but not in the car parks<br />

themselves (except Sand Street car park,<br />

St Helier).<br />

Payment for parking is by paycard wherever the symbol<br />

is displayed.<br />

• Single yellow lines indicate that parking is prohibited<br />

day and night and liable to a fine.<br />

• Paycards are not required between Saturday 17:00 and<br />

Monday 08:00 or on Bank Holidays.<br />

Car and scooter hire<br />

Visitors must hold and bring with them a valid driving<br />

licence with no endorsements for dangerous or drunken<br />

driving in the last 5 years. You must be aged 21 and over.<br />

Some restrictions may be imposed by the hire company’s<br />

insurance agent in respect of the upper age limit.<br />
