The skies above Jersey come alive to the sights and sounds of international 

military and civilian aircraft performing in breath-taking formation teams 

and skilful solo aerobatic demonstrations and it is all FREE! 

The display takes place over the picturesque St Aubin’s Bay on Jersey’s 

south coast, a perfect natural amphitheatre for display aircraft with the 

sea and Elizabeth Castle offering a dramatic backdrop. 

Activities on the ground include static displays in People’s Park. People’s 

Park is just a short walk away from the display arena and gives visitors the 

opportunity to check out aircraft close up and to have a chat with the crews.

away the afternoon marvelling at the action in the skies above you.

Jersey Live is the biggest annual music event in the Channel Islands, and 

one of the finest boutique festivals in Europe! After six storming editions 

featuring dance and indie stars such as Kasabian, The Prodigy, Razorlight, 

2ManyDJs and Snow Patrol, the festival returns on September 4th and 5th, 

with a bigger and better line up than ever across its five stages. Artists set

Autumn Walking Week 

Saturday 11th – Saturday 18th September 

Every year Jersey Tourism host their Autumn Walking Week, featuring an 

abundance of escorted walks covering the island’s countryside, coastal tracks and 

diverse history. There are over 40 walks to choose from, and ALL of these walks 

are FREE. Experience a feast of food and culture as you see, smell and savour island 

life. Stroll along the seaside, through woodland, country lanes and clifftop paths, all 

in the company of the island’s most respected and experienced walking guides.

Blampied Exhibition 

Discover another side of Edmund Blampied, and unearth 

a hidden treasure of dainty drawings and charming 

illustrations. Before he gained worldwide recognition as a 

print maker, Blampied was a freelance artist, illustrating 

books and magazines. Often signing just as Blam, this 

exhibition shows the unknown and surprising side of one 

of Jersey’s most celebrated artists.

Turret Bunker 

One of the few surviving examples, named 

sechsschartentürme (literally “six-shooting turret”) 

bunkers once proliferated along the Atlantic Wall. It is 

possible to access the interior of the cupola, equipped 

with a deactivated MG34 machine-gun, and peer 

through the optics to see a landscape viewed as a 

potential invasion point by the German garrison.

Something of a time capsule when reopened in 1985; 

the bunker has since been restored to pristine condition, 

and contains a rare 4.7cm Pak K36(t) Czech gun, along

The Sunday Cycle – Guided Ride 

Dust off your bike or hire one, and join a relaxed ride 

around Jersey’s unique cycle network. Each tour is 

tailored to match the ability, size and interests of the 

group. Along the way there are several stops to enjoy 

the island’s history and culture, and usually a refreshment 

stop to recharge the batteries or to allow visitors to set 

off exploring on their own. Touching on tradition, farming 

and the Occupation, this short leisurely ride is the ideal 

introduction to Jersey for anyone who enjoys cycling.

Noirmont M132 Command Bunker 

The command post for the naval coastal artillery battery 

‘Lothringen’ was located here. The bunker has been 

restored to a very high standard and provides a unique 

insight into the sheer scale and thoroughness of German 

military engineering. The Artillery Observation Tower 

situated alongside, may also be open on selected dates.

‘The Flicks’ at Jersey War Tunnels 

Come along to the evocative surroundings of the Jersey 

War Tunnels to watch classic movies and vintage shorts 

on DVD or 16mm film. Twice monthly from June to 

October, the films (from the collection of Chris Feltham) 

will be shown at the Welcome Centre or the Tunnel 

entrance and will be introduced by a guest speaker.

The Royal Air Force Squadronaires 

The Royal Air Force Squadronaires is one of the United 

Kingdom’s finest Big Bands with a world wide reputation 

for musical excellence. Two recent recordings ‘Flying Home’ 

and ‘Doin’ Basie’s Thing’ have brought critical acclaim. The 

Band is the only military ensemble to have performed 

at the world famous ‘Ronnie Scott’s’ Jazz Club and have 

also appeared at the Royal British Legion’s Festival of 

Remembrance with Will Young and Russell Watson.

The National Trust for 

Jersey Heritage Open Day 

In association with the Civic Trust, Heritage Open Day 

celebrates architecture and culture by allowing visitors

usually open, or would normally charge an entrance fee.

sometimes hidden, often curious and always interesting 

places, enabling everyone to gain an insight into Jersey’s

The Great North Coast 

Charity Challenge

20-mile charity challenge along the island’s north coast 

finishing at Grosnez, with all proceeds raised going to the 

locally based charity ‘Help an African Schoolchild’. Walkers 

should take between 3-10 hours to complete the course.

Jersey War Tunnels 

New experiences at Jersey War Tunnels to mark the 65th Anniversary of Liberation 

Jersey War Tunnels is a permanent 

reminder of the five dark years of 

German Occupation, detailing a true 

and accurate account of the period 

through the experiences of the people 

who were there. 

New galleries for 2010 

In addition to the ‘Captive Island’ 

exhibition the tunnel complex, formerly 

known as Höhlgangsanlage 8 (Ho8), 

now plays host to two new experiences 

which look at the Occupation in a new 

light, paying particular attention to the 

plight of individuals by detailing how 

decisions made by the Island, UK and 

German administrations drastically 

affected the course of this period for 

the residents struggling to come to 

terms with the adverse conditions 

of Occupation. 

‘Co-operation and Resistance’ is a 

hard-hitting experience that focuses 

the mind on the countless moral 

dilemmas faced. You are placed in the 

shoes of Islanders and politicians as 

you are asked to make up your own 

mind about the decisions, views and 

perceptions that could carry 

devastating consequences. 

‘Liberation’ begins by immersing the 

visitor into the desperation and 

confusion of the last months of 

Occupation, being followed by the 

exhilaration and majesty of Liberation 

Day on 9 May 1945, particularly 

pertinent this year as the Island 

celebrates the 65th Anniversary. Moving 

out of this gallery the visitor is then taken 

into a reflective space detailing the days 

and months after Liberation as Islanders 

began to piece together the lives that 

they had left behind five years previously. 

The tunnel complex of Ho8, which took 

almost three years to build, was 

designed as an armaments workshop 

and bomb proof barracks. It was 

excavated by forced and slave labourers 

from all over Europe, some of whom died 

from the terrible hardship they were 

made to endure. 

Towards the end of 1943, amid fears of 

an Allied invasion of Europe, Ho8 was 

converted into a casualty receiving 

station or underground hospital; its 

rooms were transformed into wards to 

accommodate up to 500 casualties and 

included a fully equipped operating 

theatre. The invasion never occurred, so 

the tunnel complex was never used for 

this purpose. 

Jersey War Tunnels is more than 

a chronicle of life under occupation. 

Above the tunnels, the evocative 

landscape of the Garden of Reflection is 

a permanent reminder of the Jersey men 

and women who died as a direct 

consequence of the Occupation; 

each person is commemorated by 

a steel plaque set into the lawns 

and flower-beds. 

Adjacent to Ho8 is the War Trail, 

a series of pathways through an antiaircraft 

battery which was strategically 

located to protect the eastern approach 

to the airport. You can walk amongst the 

crawl trenches, troop shelters and gun 

positions that formed the perimeter 

defences of this unique site. 

The Garden of Reflection and War Trail 

are free to visit along with the Visitor 

Centre, which contains the Shop and 

the Café. 

Complementing the Garden of 

Reflection is a sculpture by 

internationally renowned artist, Paul de 

Monchaux. Entitled ‘Silence’, it was 

commissioned to commemorate the 

suffering endured by forced and slave 

labourers who worked on the 

construction of the Ho8 complex and 

serves as a powerful reminder of the 

German Occupation of Jersey. 

To further enhance your visit, Jersey War 

Tunnels now offer audio guide tours, the 

first of their kind in Jersey. The key 

feature of the handheld audio devices, 

which are available in English, French 

and German, are the interactive buttons 

that allow users to make a series of 

ethical judgments as they walk around, 

putting themselves in the shoes of those 

Occupied and forced to make a number 

of life changing decisions. Jersey War 

Tunnels is a unique attraction that helps 

you get to the heart of the island’s 

wartime experience and learn about the 

true story of the Occupation.

La Faîs’sie d’Cidre 

Jersey’s rich heritage of apple cultivation and cider making

25 Years 

On the 5th May 1985, Jersey Pearl 

opened its doors to the world. 

Since the Jersey Pearl family started the business 25 

years ago, the pearl industry has seen huge 

developments both in terms of its levels of 

production, as well as the styles and colours now 

available on the market. 

Freshwater pearls, which are grown in large mussels, 

are naturally found in shades ranging from warm 

white through to blush pink 

and pale purple, nowadays 

however these natural gems 

are also being dyed after 

harvesting to create the

midnight blue through

The museum is housed in a former German bunker which 

once formed part of Hitler’s Atlantic Wall defences. All the 

rooms and corridors are full of artefacts left over from the 

occupation and the bunker still stands dominant over the 

beach today, showing visitors what it was like during the war. 

The museum recently celebrated its 20th anniversary and to 

mark that milestone it added many previously unseen items 

to the displays giving even better value for money.

The tunnel complex, formerly known as Höhlgangsanlage 

8 (Ho8) now plays host to a series of thought provoking 

contemporary galleries detailing the German Occupation 

of Jersey during the Second World War. Explore over a 

kilometre of underground tunnels that took three years 

to build by a workforce of hundreds of forced and slave 

labourers. Visitors will be led through events of evacuation, 

deportation, captivity and siege, to eventual liberation.

This spectacularly located headland ruin is thought to 

date from the 14th century. To the south is Le Pinacle, a 

200ft (61m) high rock, which featured as an object of 

worship and a ceremonial site for thousands of years. 

La Corbière Lighthouse

This lighthouse, situated on the south-west corner 

of the island, was the first concrete lighthouse in the

Le Don Hilton, or La Caumine à Marie Best as it is also 

known, is an old guard house beside the beach in St 

Ouen’s Bay. It is also called the “white cottage” due to 

its distinctive whitewashed walls and it was used as a 

landmark for sailors. Surrounded by thrift in spring and 

sea lavender in summer, this fabulous site can be hired 

from the National Trust for Jersey on a day basis. 

La Pouquelaye de Faldouet

A magnificent Neolithic dolmen with a 5m long passage 

leading into a large circular chamber beyond which is a 

large capstoned chamber with smaller side chambers. 

Le Moulin de Tesson (Tesson Mill)

The lowest of the group of watermills located along St 

Peter’s Valley, the mill has undergone important renovation 

work by the National Trust for Jersey. Whilst not open to 

the public as yet it is still possible to enjoy the site’s settings 

and discover delightful walks in the surrounding woodlands. 

St Aubin’s Fort

Built in the 1540s, St Aubin’s Fort pre-dates Elizabeth 

Castle and together they provided protection to the bay 

and the harbour at St Aubin. Explore the fort by walking 

across the wet sand at low tide.

Overlooking St Brelade’s Bay, the nave and chancel date 

from Norman times. The adjacent Fisherman’s Chapel is 

thought to have been built in the 12th century and has 

some good 14th and 15th century murals. 

St Helier Church

Named after the town’s patron saint, a hermit who lived 

on the rocky islet on which Elizabeth Castle now stands. 

Parts of the church date from the 11th century. The 

gallant Major Peirson, who defeated the French when

The glass work including the font, altar rail, cross and

Working with birds of prey for the past 20 years, Kes 

Douglas specialises in educational and recreational

and respect with the birds. For individuals, families and 

groups it is a great opportunity to see these magnificent

Areas of natural interest 

La Lande de Ouest 

Part of the dry coastal heathland lying above the cliffs 

along the greater part of the south-west coast. A 

designated Site of Special Interest (SSI) and rich in flora 

and fauna, this area is an important part of the island’s 

landscape and biodiversity. A great area for walking and 

birdwatching. 

Le Noir Pré 

Often known simply as “The Orchid Field”, this unique 

site actually consists of two distinct but adjoining 

wet meadows, Le Noir Pré, and the smaller Le Clos 

du Seigneur. The site is one of the last remaining 

strongholds of the Jersey Orchid or loose-flowered 

Orchid (Orchis laxiflora). Orchid flowering season May 

and June. 

Les Blanches Banques 

The sand dune system at the southern end of St Ouen’s 

Bay is recognised as an SSI and more than 400 plant 

species have been recorded here. It also provides home 

to the super Jersey Green Lizard. 

Les Landes 

This coastal heathland is the most spectacular aspect of 

Jersey’s wild environments. Les Landes is Jersey’s largest 

single expanse of maritime heathland covering 160 

hectares and bound by 3km of high granite cliffs. 

Portelet Common 

With a mixture of dramatic sea views and a habitat 

typical of an area subjected to the prevailing southwesterly 

wind, the common has thick gorse cover, dwarf 

shrub heathland and lichen-rich grassland. Peaking at 

sixty one metres above sea level and covering thirty one 

hectares, this scenery is not to be missed. 

Ramsar Sites 

These are areas listed on the Ramsar List of Wetlands 

of International Importance which concerns the 

conservation and wise use of wetlands and their 

resources. Jersey has four! These magnificent sites 

are; the south-east coast of Jersey, Les Minquiers, Les 

Écréhous and Les Dirouilles, and Les Pierres de Lecq 

(The Paternosters). These sites are truly unique and 

well worth a visit; however, three of these sites are 

offshore reefs and require a trip by boat. Check out 

the “Activities” section for operators who can take 

you on a short boat trip to see these sites. The south 

coast area can be walked around and guided walks 

are available (contact Jersey Walk Adventures – see 

“Activities”). Important! If you wish to walk around the 

area independently please seek advice first as the tide 

rises rapidly and you can become stranded if unprepared. 

Knowledge of the tides is essential. Jersey Tourism can 

provide advice if necessary but recommends that you 

employ a guide. See “Walking” section of this guide. 

Reservoirs 

There are several reservoirs within the island which can 

be walked around. These include Queen’s Valley and Val 

de la Mare. Other reservoirs include Millbrook, Grands 

Vaux, Handois, Mourier Valley and Dannemarche. 

St Catherine’s Woods 

Also known as Rozel Woods, this woodland is set in a 

deep-cut, steep-sided valley. A stream running through 

the valley floor has helped develop a wide range of 

habitats within the woodland. 

St Ouen’s Pond 

(La Mare au Seigneur) 

Probably the most significant wetland in Jersey, it is a 

dedicated nature reserve with open water, reed beds and 

a marshy perimeter providing habitats for fish, insects, 

flowers and birds, including the Marsh Harrier which can 

often be seen gliding above the pond.

built by the occupying forces before ending up at

Lecq and up to the winding green lanes of St Mary, past 

granite farms and cod houses, to the wind swept cliffs of 

the north coast. Spectacular views of the other islands and 

occasionally the French coast await as you return past the 

old militia shooting grounds and the ancient hill fort back 

to the bay, where you may wish to have a well deserved 

leisurely lunch, afternoon tea or just an ice cream.

Enjoy the natural backdrop of the wonderful west 

coast, from the beach with its historic fortifications, the 

dune grasslands and the dense reed-bed surrounding 

the pond, habitat for a variety of species throughout 

the year. Discover wild orchids in May within the 

National Trust’s Nature Reserve and you may even see 

the marsh harriers which nest here. There is a host 

of birds, insects – butterflies, dragonflies and other 

creepy-crawlies to see on this walk so don’t forget your 

binoculars!

Gardens and Micro Climate of Rozel

This is the area where famous local artist Edmund 

Blampied grew up. Start in Samuel Curtis’s forgotten,

a garden lost in time for almost 100 years. Visits include 

the stunning and colourful gardens of ‘Les Vaux’ with its 

own nature reserve, peacocks and red squirrels and Rozel 

Manor with its varied garden of palms, wild areas, a lake 

and a private chapel.

the route of the Jersey Eastern Railway back to the Pier.

to Vegetation Walk 

Journey through the remains of personnel shelters, 

bunkers and crawl trenches from the Occupation that 

are now nearly all but hidden under a variety of trees, 

shrubs and wild flowers, which has created a refuge for a 

diversity of wildlife from red squirrels to bats.

The Around Island Express 

If you like a challenge, why not come along? Choose a 

day or do all three! Following on from the success of 

Jersey Tourism’s 5 day Around Island Walk, Blue Badge 

Guide Arthur Lamy brings you the same route at a 

brisker pace. 

Day 1 takes you from St Helier to Bonne Nuit via the 

east coast, passing Mont Orgueil and St Catherine’s 

breakwater and heading along the north coast past 

Rozel to Bonne Nuit. Day 2 heads from Bonne Nuit to La 

Corbière along the cliff paths passing Devil’s Hole, Grève 

de Lecq and Grosnez and Day 3 leaves La Corbière 

behind, crossing St Brelade’s Bay, Portelet Common and 

heading through St Aubin, before finishing back in St 

Helier. Bring a packed lunch and refreshments.

Corbière Lighthouse – 

Seeing the Light 

A rare opportunity to visit the lighthouse of La Corbière 

and explore the dramatic headland. Hear tales of tides

causeway uncovered at half tide and climb up the spiral 

staircase to the lantern room to discover the intricacies of 

19th, 20th and 21st century technology, and the views.

A Maritime Meander 

Take a maritime meander around St Helier’s vibrant 

and busy port, which includes a visit to the Lifeboat 

Station. Most of the harbour was built in the 19th 

century and designed for wooden sailing boats. Hear 

about the coming of paddle steamers that brought our 

first tourists, and the SS Vega that brought salvation to 

starving islanders during the Occupation and see the 

Florence and the Jesse: sailing boats given by Jesse Boot, 

island resident and founder of Boots the Chemist.

The Battle of Jersey – 

The Baron’s Last Hours 

Find out how Baron De Rullecourt planned and carried 

out his daring attempt to capture the Island. Retrace his 

night-time advance through the deserted streets of St 

Helier. Relive the last land battle fought in the British Isles 

and the last moments of both Peirson and de Rullecourt’s 

lives. See where the wounded French commander spent 

his last hours, and where he and the hero of the hour, 

Major Francis Peirson, are buried.

Stepping Out – 

Geology Walk with Ralph Nichols 

Have you ever heard that Jersey used to be a volcano? 

Come and see for yourself. The walk from Anne Port 

slipway to La Crête Point will reveal the explosive 

deposits of volcanic bombs and boiling incandescent ash, 

as well as the flow-banded, spherulitic and columnar lava 

flows which formed our own Giant’s Causeway.

The Side to Side 

This cross island odyssey heads east to west passing 

through nine of the island’s prettiest valleys and past 

three of the largest reservoirs. The route uses woodland 

paths and quiet country lanes as much as possible. Day 

1 starts from Gorey, through Queen’s Valley, past La 

Hougue Bie, Vallée des Vaux, Fern Valley and Waterworks 

Valley to St Lawrence Church. Day 2 heads past the War 

Tunnels, through St Peter’s Valley passing some National 

Trust properties and then onto Val de la Mare and onto 

the Atlantic breakers of St Ouen’s Bay.

A team of professional lifeguards patrol key beaches from mid May to the end of September. Look out for the red 

and yellow flags which indicate the patrolled areas for swimming. Swim within the flags, but note that when a red 

flag is flying the conditions are dangerous and unsuitable for swimming. Jersey has some of the largest tidal flows in 

the world so take care when bathing or exploring the seashore. The beach lifeguard team is only too happy to advise 

swimmers regarding beach safety, please ask. The beaches patrolled are: St Ouen’s Bay, St Brelade’s Bay, Grève de 

Lecq, Plémont and Havre des Pas.

terminal at Liberation Station, St Helier. There is a regular 

bus service between the airport at St Peter and St Helier.

Parking 

Parking in Jersey requires the pre-purchase 

of parking scratchcards, or paycards, from 

Jersey Tourism, post offices, garages and 

shops island-wide, but not in the car parks 

themselves (except Sand Street car park, 

St Helier). 

Payment for parking is by paycard wherever the symbol 

is displayed. 

• Single yellow lines indicate that parking is prohibited 

day and night and liable to a fine. 

• Paycards are not required between Saturday 17:00 and 

Monday 08:00 or on Bank Holidays.

Visitors must hold and bring with them a valid driving 

licence with no endorsements for dangerous or drunken 

driving in the last 5 years. You must be aged 21 and over. 

Some restrictions may be imposed by the hire company’s 

insurance agent in respect of the upper age limit.
