We will also be expanding and enhancing the “jobs page” where FM related jobs are advertised. • Newsletters We are still sending out regular newsletters. These newsletters are sent to a distribution list of 900 people. This is the most important way in which we communicate with our members and we encourage you to read them and let us know what you think and would like to see included. • Media Commencing in January 2010 all paid up Members received 3 months free editions of the JFM as well as their email bulletins. After the 3 month period members are entitled to a 10% discount on the JFM subscription. Wide coverage of SAFMA has been seen in the media – African Facilities Management Online, JFM, Property News, African Cleaning Review have all reported on SAFMA and its activities as well as a number of international publications. There were also FM features in the Business Day in May and the Independent Newspapers in August which SAFMA participated in. • Global FM SAFMA has been a member of Global FM, the international association of FM associations since 2007. We continue to build on this relationship and have increased our participation although there is still room to work on this. We participated in their World FM day during the year for a second time. We were pleased that one of our members, Pragma, entered a submission into the Global FM Awards of Excellence and we were represented on the panel of judges for these awards. • Services SETA We are delighted that the Commercial Property & Facilities Management NQF Level 4 qualification has been sent to SAQA for approval. Although we did ask for comment from members on the qualification very few comments were received. We do have to live with this qualification now for 3 years after which we may have an opportunity to amend it. Nominations have now been sent through to the 6
Services Seta for assessors for this position. Work on the NQF Level 5 position has commenced. • Relevance of SAFMA It is clear that SAFMA is once again firmly “on the map”. The Administrators are constantly asked to provide information on FM or SAFMA related issues via the website, email, and telephone. Queries come from all over Africa and even further afield. Approximately 280 such queries have been dealt with in the past year. We have also been asked to participate with some of our member organisations in a Development Bank study on infra-structure maintenance in the Public Sector. We also continue to have involvement with various Educational Institutions around FM curriculum development. We frequently have requests for the contact details of our member organisations and we will be engaging with corporate members about this issue. We continue to be involved with the Property Charter to demonstrate our commitment. • Council Resignations Andrew Mason of TFMC who has been a long standing and active participant of the Council resigned from Council due to work Commitments during July 2010. • Government Liaison Not much has happened with our Government liaison and this is something we need to work on in the next year. • Relationship with other Industry bodies As you were updated during Rudd van Deventer’s presentation earlier today, we are working with the SA Green Building Council to ensure that we remain current with these developments and become active participants. In terms of future expansion it is imperative that we nurture relationships with SAPOA, SCCSA and the like. • Conclusion My thanks go to the members of the National Council as well as the Western Cape Regional Council for their inputs and efforts during the year. 7
