Typically, rigid foam sheathing is usually used<br />
on the exterior side of the cavity insulation (and<br />
the exterior side of the wall framing system).<br />
The weather resistive membrane separates<br />
the insulated sheathing from the air gap in<br />
the rainscreen wall system. Alternatively, the<br />
foam sheathing may be used on the interior<br />
side of the frame wall. Either approach offers<br />
the advantage of minimizing thermal bridging,<br />
especially when steel framing is used.<br />
It is very important to use caution when using<br />
rigid foam sheathing. Rigid foam sheathing<br />
affects the moisture management strategy<br />
for the wall system. Some types of rigid<br />
foam sheathing are relatively impermeable,<br />
and moisture may be trapped inside a wall<br />
system. Such walls may have more limited<br />
drying potential. Further, this extra layer of<br />
insulation may change the temperature profile<br />
within the wall and may increase (or possibly<br />
decrease) interstitial condensation. Deliberate<br />
consideration of the heat, air, and moisture<br />
flows are especially important with the use of<br />
insulated sheathing. A well designed rainscreen<br />
wall system minimizes these risks.<br />
