Introduction to CiscoWorks
The CiscoWorks family of products is Cisco's network management suite for
enterprise networks. This module will teach you about the CiscoWorks product
family and the target network type for each application. You will learn about
CiscoWorks solution sets for element and infrastructure management, IP telephony
and critical traffic management, and security and identity management.
CiscoWorks Overview
CiscoWorks tools provide innovative ways to centrally manage critical network
characteristics such as availability, responsiveness, resilience, and security.
CiscoWorks solutions can be organized by these categories: element and
infrastructure management, IP telephony and critical traffic management, and security
and identity management.
CiscoWorks LMS and RWAN
The LAN Management Solution (LMS) and Routed WAN (RWAN) Management
Solution sets are two of the most popular CiscoWorks offerings and contain the core
management capabilities for LANs and WANs. The LMS bundle enables network
administrators to effectively manage their LAN and campus networks, while the RWAN
bundle simplifies the configuration, administration, and troubleshooting processes of
routed WANs.
CiscoWorks SNMS
CiscoWorks Small Network Management Solution (SNMS) is a comprehensive,
cost-effective, and user-friendly solution. It provides a powerful set of monitoring,
configuration, and management tools to simplify the administration of small and
medium-sized networks with up to 40 devices.
CiscoWorks for Windows
CiscoWorks for Windows (CWW) is a cost-effective, user-friendly solution that
provides a powerful set of monitoring and management tools to simplify the
administration of small networks. Generally, a small network is a network with less
than 40 devices, although there are no hard-coded limitations in the product.
Network Analysis Module
The Network Analysis Module (NAM) provides visibility into network traffic by
examining RMON/RMON2 statistics that enable the network administrator to
determine if applications, hosts, or servers are not correctly functioning. This visibility
allows the network administrator to troubleshoot network-based services, such as
voice and quality of service (QoS), and identify baseline network traffic and anomalies.
IP Telephony Environment Monitor
The IP Telephony Environment Monitor (ITEM) helps to ensure the readiness and
manageability of converged networks that support IP telephony traffic and
applications. The applications within this solution set proactively monitor Cisco IP
telephony elements in the network in order to alert operations personnel of potential
problems and to help minimize telephony network downtime.
QoS Policy Manager
QoS is crucial in converged networks. Using the QoS Policy Manager application,
network managers can simplify the definition of traffic queuing policies and their
deployment throughout the network.
VPN/Security Management Solution
The VPN/Security Management Solution (VMS) set delivers a robust and scalable
foundation and feature set that can address the needs of small and large-scale
virtual private network (VPN), firewall and intrusion detection and prevention
deployments.
Cisco Secure Access Control Server
Cisco Secure Access Control Server (ACS) is a highly scalable, high-performance
access control server, which operates as a RADIUS or TACACS server system. ACS
is a timesaving application that provides tools for managing user access,
authorization, and accounting.
Enterprise Managers
The use of element managers, such as CiscoWorks, does not always eliminate the
need for an overall enterprise-level view. Enterprise managers like HP OpenView
and Tivoli Netview integrate with CiscoWorks and other element management
applications to provide a consolidated view of a heterogeneous network.
CiscoWorks Architecture: Functional Overview
The CiscoWorks architecture is based on a clients/server relationship. CiscoWorks
solutions are built upon Internet standards, but they rely on the intelligence built into
the Cisco IOS® and Catalyst® software. This intelligence can be classified as
agents or services running within the Cisco devices. Adding intelligence into the
network creates an enterprise network that is scalable and manageable.
Device Information
Information about Cisco device configurations, faults, and performance is stored in
the management information bases (MIBs) or configuration files of networked
devices. This information is retrieved from the managed devices or agents located in
the network by the server using a variety of management protocols such as Simple
Network Management Protocol (SNMP), Telnet, Remote Copy Protocol (RCP), or
Trivial File Transfer Protocol (TFTP).
Access
Clients access the network information in the CiscoWorks database by accessing
the CiscoWorks server using a supported Web browser. Other third party network
management systems can also leverage information from CiscoWorks, including the
device configurations and status.
Cisco.com Integration
CiscoWorks is tightly integrated with Cisco.com. Clients can easily locate
CiscoWorks product information, software images, and software updates through
CiscoWorks.
Secure Communication
The first line of security is to authenticate the user who is accessing the
CiscoWorks server. The authentication method can include: local authentication,
TACACS+, RADIUS, or additional methods. After authentication, the
communication between the client and server can be secured for specific modules
using the Secure Socket Layer (SSL) protocol to encrypt the data. The other link
that can be secured occurs between the CiscoWorks server and remote devices,
which is handled using SSH or Secure Shell (for some modules).
Benefits
CiscoWorks solution sets for element and infrastructure management provide the
foundation to effectively manage the Cisco devices in a network. Using the LMS
and RWAN bundles, the network manager has the necessary tools for full
lifecycle management. This includes the ability to configure and monitor Cisco
devices and to quickly troubleshoot problems as they arise.
Repetitive Tasks
The network manager can easily handle repetitive tasks, such as archiving
configuration files, reporting on software images, and changing device passwords,
with CiscoWorks. Using CiscoWorks reduces the possibility of human errors and the
costs associated with performing these tasks.
CiscoWorks Management Solutions, Page 19

Performance
CiscoWorks solution sets provide the foundation for managing data performance
across networks. Applications such as QPM, IPM, and the NAM provide the tools
needed to analyze and troubleshoot traffic characteristics and patterns necessary
for proactive performance management.
Return on Investment
Using CiscoWorks creates a large
potential return on investment
(ROI). Reduced employee costs,
network downtime, and optimized
bandwidth all contribute to
decreased operating costs.
