Saul Adelsberg,
Executive Vice President,
SYSCO Food Services
of Los Angeles
“I love coming to work each morning!”
Recently promoted to Executive Vice President of SYSCO Food Services of Los Angeles,
Saul Adelsberg joined the company fresh out of college in 1983—and his enthusiasm
hasn’t faded one bit since then.
Adelsberg first encountered SYSCO when a marketing associate and a district sales
manager visited his parents’ coffee shop in North Hollywood. “At the time, I was close to
graduating from college and was fielding offers from a couple of stock brokerage firms for
around $25,000 a year. The SYSCO guys told me I could earn as much money as I wanted.”
He accepted their offer, went to work for SYSCO, built a solid business through referrals, and in 1988 was
promoted to district sales manager, “where I was blessed with a tremendous group of marketing associates—and most
of them are still with the company.”
Over the last 20 years, Adelsberg’s admiration for SYSCO has only grown: “I can’t say enough about this
company. It’s an absolute privilege to work here.” To say that he enjoys what he does would be an understatement.
“It’s not work to me—it really isn’t,” he says. “When the alarm clock rings in the morning, I can’t wait to go to
work. If I weren’t married and didn’t have twins, I’d work even more hours.”
And if you ask what the experience has taught him, Adelsberg is just as forthcoming: “I’ve learned that if you’re
good to people, they’ll be good to you. This is a relationship business—it’s got to come from the heart.”
Diane Day Sanders,
Senior Vice President of
Finance and Treasurer,
SYSCO Corporation
“Things are always changing.”
For Senior Vice President of Finance and Treasurer Diane Day Sanders, the journey with
SYSCO goes all the way back to 1977. Then an accountant with one of the “big eight” CPA
firms, Sanders first encountered SYSCO when the company became one of her clients—and
she was impressed with what she saw. “I thought if and when I decided to move from
public accounting to industry, this would be the kind of company I’d want to work for,”
she recalls. “Everyone at SYSCO had a lot of respect for each other, as well as for their
business partners—their suppliers and customers. The company had a great growth record
and did things the right way.” Sanders joined the team as a staff auditor in the operations review department and
was promoted to director of the department five years later. In 1994 she was appointed vice president and treasurer,
moving into her current position in February 2004.
Over her 27 years with the company, Sanders has seen some impressive changes. “Growth in the numbers of
associates and our facilities network has given us the ability to serve customers throughout North America,” she
notes. “We’ve also made incredible progress with our technology—which allows us to focus individualized services
for each customer as well as substantially increase our efficiency.” At the same time, she says, there are some things
a few decades can’t change: “Integrity in our business dealings is just as—if not more—important today as when
Mr. Baugh established this key value 34 years ago.”
Of the many advantages Sanders has found in working for SYSCO, one stands out over all the rest: unlimited
potential for professional growth. “There are so many opportunities to expand knowledge and advance careers across
diverse areas,” she explains. “There is always something new to do, and I have never stopped learning.”
