7.2 <strong>The</strong> career plans <strong>of</strong> mathematics teachers <strong>in</strong> secondary schools<br />
7.2.1 Overview<br />
<strong>The</strong> supply <strong>of</strong> mathematics teachers <strong>in</strong> the future will partly depend upon the career plans <strong>of</strong> those<br />
teachers currently <strong>in</strong> the system. <strong>Teachers</strong> were asked if they planned to still be teach<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> five<br />
years time. This data was tested for correlation aga<strong>in</strong>st a number <strong>of</strong> variables, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g personal<br />
pr<strong>of</strong>iles (age, gender, teach<strong>in</strong>g experience), school type (location, sector) and subjects taught.<br />
Fewer than half the teachers surveyed were confident that they would be teach<strong>in</strong>g mathematics <strong>in</strong> five<br />
years time (Table 7.2). Sixteen per cent stated that they would be leav<strong>in</strong>g teach<strong>in</strong>g, and another 39<br />
per cent were undecided.<br />
