Community Education’s Role in WWCC’s Mission 

Community Education supports the following aspect of WWCC’s mission: Western’s 

fundamental purpose is to provide high quality learning opportunities to students who are 

at various stages of life and have differing needs and expectations. Committed to quality and

Registration Process 

Community Education courses are offered for non-credit. Charges associated with an 

individual course or event are based upon the direct cost of offering the course or event plus a 

35% administrative fee. 

Sweetwater County residents aged 60 years or over may enroll for courses offered at Western 

with payment of tuition waived. Special fees for supplies or other costs remain the financial 

responsibility of each student, regardless of age, and cannot be waived. The College Board of 

Trustees reserves the right to change tuition and fees at any time.

THE BUSINESS OF PROFESSIONAL 

PHOTOGRAPHY 

Thinking about taking your passion to the next level? Friends and family 

keep pressuring you to do their portraits? This is the class you need 

before, during and even after you have made that decision. This class 

will go over how to determine your pricing, how to create a workflow 

that keeps you behind the camera, not the computer, which organizations 

and memberships are an absolute must, what is a print competition and 

do I want to get involved and more. Insurance, indemnification fees, 

advertising, current graphic design programs and template outlets, labs, 

framing vendors…this class is almost everything you need to know to 

become or to improve how you do things as a professional.

STEPPING STONES 

In this class we will decorate a square stepping stone with a glass 

top and grout it in place. When the class is finished the student will have a 

stepping stone that can be placed in the yard or garden to enjoy.

LEAD/WINDOWS STAINED GLASS 

Use lead to make a window with stained glass. Students should take the 

beginning and intermediate classes or have prior experience before taking 

this class. Supplies are included in the fee.

WATERCOLOR PAINTING 

This class will explore water-media techniques, composition, color theory 

and drawing. Students will express their individual imagination, choosing 

their own subject matter with help from the instructor. The class will 

include traditional and abstract styles in painting. Instructor will give 

instruction on a one-to-one basis and advice on the use of materials.

BEGINNING STAINED GLASS 

Beautify your home with a stained glass sun catcher. You will learn cutting, 

grinding, cleaning and soldering. The supplies are included in the fee.

BAGS TO PURSES 

If you know how to crochet, this class is for you. Learn to fold grocery 

bags and cut them into strips to make "yarn". Crochet this plastic yarn into 

a fashionable purse. Bring a G or H crochet hook, bags and scissors to the 

first class. Students MUST know how to crochet to take this class.

Design and make necklaces, earrings, bracelets and rings in this

DOLLS, DOLLS AND MORE DOLLS & 

Join Donna and make any type of dolls, including porcelain, composition, 

sculpted and rag dolls. You can also make sewn or crocheted clothes for 

the dolls you make or just make clothes for the dolls you already have. 

Do you have a doll you would like to restore? Bring that and let Donna 

help you. Donna has many molds from her shop and will help you with 

anything you would like to do with dolls.

CARDS FOR ALL OCCASIONS 

Once again Amanda Merkley will be leading a card making workshop. 

Make and take home a variety of cards. Have fun socializing with 

friends while learning a new skill. This has been a popular class with an 

enthusiastic instructor. The supply fee of $8 is included in the total fee.

OUTDOOR DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY 

Outdoor Digital Photography is a great course for someone looking to 

take better landscape pictures. The course will cover photography basics, 

composition, and editing. Students are required to bring their own digital 

camera. All digital cameras are allowed, however a DSLR (such as Canon 

EOS Rebel or Nikon D300) is preferred.

BASIC PHOTOGRAPHY IMPROVEMENT 

This class will go over basic photography skills that can improve 

your photography no matter what type of camera you have. While a 

digital SLR is recommended and will be discussed frequently, you can 

take some of the basic skills and apply them to your point and shoot 

camera. Students will be given assignments to work on outside of class 

that will be reviewed each following class. Having your camera manual 

and camera in class will aid in finding the functions discussed.

COURSE 1: CAKE DECORATING BASICS 

This Cake Decorating Basics Course is the perfect place to start! Michelle, 

your Wilton method instructor, will show you the right way to decorate, 

step by step, so that you experience the excitement of successfully 

decorating your first cake. You’ll understand how to bake a great cake, see 

how to make and color icing and learn the best way to ice the cake. Along 

the way, you’ll learn to create icing drop flowers, rosettes, shells, pompom 

flowers, leaves, shaggy mums and the ribbon rose. You’ll also decorate 

cookies, cupcakes ... and of course cakes!

COURSE 2: FLOWERS AND CAKE DESIGN 

Prerequisite: Course 1 ~ Cake Decorating Basics Flowers and Cake 

Design is an intermediate class. In this class, you’ll explore sophisticated 

ways to bring your cakes and desserts to life! Michelle, your Wilton 

Method Instructor will teach you to create breathtaking icing flowers 

such as pansies, lilies, the rose, and many more. Then, you’ll discover 

the secrets of arranging them in a beautifully balanced cake-top bouquet. 

Your amazing flowers will be framed by an impressive border treatment or 

basket weave design. A supply list will be provided. Class will not be held 

on March 15th.

COURSE 3: GUM PASTE AND FONDANT 

Prerequisite: Course 1 ~ Cake Decorating Basics 

Gum Paste and Fondant is an intermediate cake decorating class. In this 

class, you will discover one of the most exciting and satisfying ways 

to decorate a cake. Michelle, your Wilton Method Instructor, will lead 

you every step of the way as you create amazing hand shaped flowers, 

beautiful borders and bold accents using these easy-to-shape icings. As 

you learn each technique – an artful bow, mum, rose, carnation, calla 

lily, rosebud, daisy and embellished borders – you’ll be closer to your 

crowning achievement: A Final Course Cake that displays your skills. A 

supply list will be provided.

COURSE 4: ADVANCED GUM PASTE 

FLOWERS & FONDANT FIGURINES 

Prerequisite ~ Courses 3: Fondant and Gum Paste 

Astonish your family and friends with these beautiful, life-like flowers and 

floral arrangements on wires, perfect for any occasion. Gum paste flowers 

include: stargazer lily, gerbera daisy, stephanotis, sweet pea, and many 

more! As a bonus, the class includes one day of fondant figurines where 

you will create cute little figurines out of fondant to adorn cakes, cupcakes, 

and more. A supply list will be provided.

CAKE POPS 

Get ready for the most stick-tacular treat that ever popped up at 

a party! It’s easy to learn how to create pops- sweets on a stick that you’ll 

love to dip, decorate and devour. A supply list will be provided.

BASIC SEWING 

You will learn the basic sewing techniques with step-by-step 

demonstrations for straight stitching, zig-zag seams, patching, 

putting in zippers, blind-stitch hems, seam ripping, basic alterations, 

measuring and small projects. Later weeks make an apron, placemat, 

simple lap quilt or purse/totebag.

KNIT IT TOO! 

This class is for the knitter with some experience. Students will 

gain more confidence practicing this fun and relaxing skill as 

they create projects using cables, circular knitting, and felting techniques. 

Bring one ball of any solid color Lily Sugar'n Cream yarn, and size 7 

knitting needles to the first class. A supply list for the remainder of the 

classes will be provided.

SCRAPBOOKING, PAPER CRAFTING & MORE 

Join us in the Scrapbooking, Paper Crafting & More class. We will learn 

various parts of scrapbooking to include unique styles of paper crafting. 

The first project will be a paper bag album. It is very economical but 

adorable. Amaze your family & friends with what you can do with 

an everyday household item. Additional projects are planned for this 

session which will include a chipboard album, altered books and seasonal 

items. Kits will be available for each project. All you need to bring is 

a few pictures, your favorite adhesive, cutting system and any favorite 

embellishments. If you do not have tools some will be available to use 

in class. So, let’s get creative together! Have fun, meet new friends. 

This class will meet every other week on the dates listed below. The $10 

supply fee will include the supplies for the first project.

ARTISTRY, DISCOVERY & EXPLORATION 

Infant and toddler exploration, discovery and artistry through fun 

sensory activities will be taught in this exciting class for parents 

and their young children. The adult will register for the class and their 

preschool children may attend with them at no additional charge.

FIT CLUB FOR KIDS 

Students will participate in a variety of physical activities that are designed 

for all skill levels. Guest speakers from the community will be invited to 

speak to the class about health topics and share how being healthy helps 

them do their jobs. This course is geared toward children who want to be 

physically active with their peers without having to participate in a team 

sport. Healthy snacks will be provided at each class. Please wear athletic 

shoes and comfortable clothes. Be prepared to be outside if the weather 

permits. This is for students in grades 3-5.

MUSIC TOGETHER 

This course helps parents to teach their children important music 

fundamentals and is appropriate for families with children ages 0-5. 

Studies have shown encouraging music in early childhood leads to higher 

verbal and mathematical scores in elementary school and beyond. This 

will be taught by Bethanne Thompson at the Children's Center. The 

course fee will include a CD of the songs we use in class. Bethanne has an 

Associate's in Education and 15 years of experience teaching music and 

education. The adult will register for the class and their preschool children 

may attend with them at no additional charge.

Kids love to help in the kitchen. And now, kids can learn how to decorate 

like the pros with this cake decorating class designed especially for them! 

Michelle will teach them kid-friendly techniques to create a fabulous cake. 

A cake decorating supply kit that the child can keep is included in the 

course fee. Bring a cake and a can of Wilton decorators’ icing. A supply 

list of a few household items will be provided.

PHOTOSHOP ELEMENTS 

This course will cover the basics of photo editing, organizing, and special 

effects using Adobe Photoshop Elements 8. Examples of each lesson 

will be demonstrated at the beginning of each class, and the remaining 

time will be available for hands-on use of the software. Topics include 

photo organizing, fixing dust spots and scratches, red eye removal, text, 

filters, layers, saving for the web, and printing. Fields of interest included 

photography, scrap booking, graphic design, the web, and desktop 

publishing. Class will not be held on July 4.

YOGA FOR EVERY "BODY" 

This is your time to reduce stress, gain flexibility and strength, relax and 

have fun. This class is for both beginners and for those who already do 

yoga. Bring your own mat and props (strap and block) if you have them;

YOGA FOR THE MATURE ADULT 

This class focuses on learning basic yoga poses, techniques, and postural 

awareness. Sue Bishop, Registered Yoga Instructor, offers supportive 

guidance with modifications to meet the needs of the mature adult. See 

how yoga can help you relax, relieve stress and improve strength and 

flexibility. Each class ends with a 10-minute guided relaxation. Class will 

not be held on 4/2 & 4/9.

DINING WITH DIABETES 

Dining with Diabetes in Wyoming is an educational program that teaches 

individuals with type 2 diabetes and their families about better ways to 

prepare foods that may improve their diabetes management. Participants 

also learn up-to-date information on nutrition, meal planning, daily 

physical activity, and how to understand common diabetes-related medical 

tests. Recipes and handouts will be given to each participant.

TOOLS FOR MEDITATION 

Through subtle instruction and guidance, participants will be 

introduced to various forms of meditation practice. We will 

unveil some of the mystery behind meditation and discuss the science 

behind it. We will also learn about the proven benefits of meditation as we 

practice different techniques to enable participants to achieve a meditative 

state. We will explore passive meditations including visualization, guided, 

concentrated and vispassana. Participants will have the opportunity to 

practice active meditations such as mindful walking, chanting/mantra and 

eating, to gain a better understanding of alert presence in all moments. 

This class, like meditation itself, is not religious in any way; however, 

participants may be introduced or reacquainted with eastern philosophies 

within the context of understanding the underlying concepts of meditation. 

Participants should dress in comfortable non-confining clothing and 

should bring a blanket, mat or pillow. Depending on the temperature, they 

may wish to bring a robe or hoodie.

DEALING WITH ADDICTION 

If you or a loved one is dealing with addiction and you need answers to 

the following questions, please come to this class for helpful information. 

What is addiction? How can it be a disease? How does it happen? 

How does it affect the individual, loved ones, and society? How do the 

addictive drugs work on the mind and body? Why can't they "just stop"? 

Why treatment and/or 12-step meetings? What is treatment like? What 

is the ability and responsibility of the addicted person? What can I do 

to help myself and my loved one? Margene is a Licensed Professional 

Counselor and a Licensed Addiction Therapist.

ANATOMY OF A BREATH & 

Learn how proper breathing can improve your health, posture, 

and attitude. It has been reported that in our modern day society 

many people only use as little as 25% of their lung capacity due to stress 

and other factors in our daily lives. Science has shown that learning 

special breathing techniques may help a person to lose weight, lower 

blood pressure, and increase energy to name just a few of the benefits. 

See how the Psoas muscle not only effects posture, but also the breathing 

process. Students will learn techniques to reduce stress and improve their 

quality of life.

Whether you want to learn a new skill, or just become more proficient at 

the piano, enrolling in private lessons will help you to develop reading 

fluency, technique, stylistic interpretations, and performance skills.

at the piano and 30 minutes in the computer/keyboard lab. Students

BASIC CAR CARE 

This course is designed for people who really don’t know 

anything about their car except how to drive it and how to fill up 

the tank. This class will offer students instruction in the basics of simple 

automotive services such as changing a flat tire, and checking the oil, 

understanding maintenance schedules, preventive maintenance and repair, 

along with the terminology, proper use of tools, and procedures required 

to perform these tasks. This class will empower the students to not only 

be able to perform simple tasks themselves, but it will help them to have 

confidence if they take their car into the shop to have someone else work 

on it.

class you must first go to the Wyoming Game and Fish Department 

website and complete the online section of the class. Print all of your 

quizzes and bring those to your Internet Field Day course. You will 

take an entry quiz to be admitted to the class. After passing that you can 

complete the course and take the final exam. Pre-registration required!

trips to Broadway Across America in Salt Lake City, 

Utah. Spend a leisurely day with good company, 

good food, and outstanding entertainment. You 

may buy season tickets, individual theater tickets 

and bus tickets or take the bus for a leisurely day in 

Salt Lake City without attending the theater. The bus 

fee is $30 for each trip. You must purchase your 

theater tickets through Broadway in Utah or another 

source if you do not order the season tickets through 

Western Wyoming Community College. Please
