Product brief November 2000
PCs and programming devices are
taking on increasing significance
alongside programmable controllers
when it comes to the implementation of
flexible production systems.
Their flexible programmability enables
rapid adaptation of the production
system to the automation function
required.
Their high-performance communications
structures enable automation
projects to be implemented economically
and with an appropriate degree of
flexibility for today’s market.
SIMATIC ® NET is a crucial component.
If offers components and networks to
enable perfect industrial communications.
For the connection of programming
devices and PCs to the Industrial
Ethernet networks (in accordance with
IEEE 802.3/802.3u) and to PROFIBUS
(in accordance with IEC 61158/
EN 50170), SIMATIC NET has an extensive
The SIMATIC NET ® networks enable
consistent communication from the
control level all the way down to the
field level. They guarantee both openness
to the office networks with TCP/IP
and integration of the actuator/sensor
level into the consistent communications
environment with the AS-Interface.
Automation can now be implemented
complete on a fully integrated, consistent
hardware and software platform.
This means that you, as the user, are
entirely flexible, as you can easily integrate
products from other manufacturers
into the standard open networks
using standardized software interfaces.
These networks are especially important,
as they represent the backbone of
the entire automation solution. The system
uses widely accepted industrial
standards, so it is essentially open on
all sides.
SIMATIC NET is the name given to
a whole range of networks.
The individual products fulfil a wide
range of performance and application
requirements: they can exchange data
across various levels, between different
sections of the plant or between
different automation stations. They also
have uniform system interfaces and are
excellently adapted to suit one another.
ITlution takes on a particularly important
role within the range: ITlution
stands for the SIMATIC NET industrial
communication products which use
conventional IT technology (Web,
e-mail). These are based on networks
such as Industrial Ethernet, ISDN and
GSM.
The networks at a glance:
Industrial Ethernet
(IEEE 802.3/802.3u) –
the international standard for division
and cell networking.
PROFIBUS (IEC 61158/EN 50170) –
the international standard for the field
level and cell networks for a small
number of stations.
AS-Interface (EN 50 295) –
for communications with sensors and
actuators.
EIB (CEN TC 247) –
the global standard in building installation
bus systems and the basis for
buildings services automation.
The fact that networks with thousands
of network stations have been implemented
in all the major sectors of industry
goes to show just how successful
SIMATIC NET really is. Some of the
reasons for its success are as follows:
SIMATIC NET has been based on consistent
standards from the very outset.
Siemens was a member of the standardization
committees working on international
standards for industrial communications
from the very beginning.
The PC is taking on an increasingly
important role in industrial communication.
In combination with real-time
applications, such as those based on
Windows NT, it represents an ideal
basis for visualization systems
(e.g. WinCC ® ).
Using SoftControl software, the PC can
now tackle communications functions
which were previously the exclusive
domain of programmable controllers.
The SIMATIC NET PC communications
processors (CP) have the following
benefits:
· CPs for all formats:
PCI, PCMCIA or ISA formats.
· Can be used flexibly depending on
the resources required in the PC:
CPs with or without their own microprocessor
· Simple to incorporate into the system
environment and office applications
by means of open, standardized interfaces,
such as that with the OPC
server.
PROFIBUS is the worldwide market
leader in industrial communication and
offers significant benefits when it
comes to field communication:
· PROFIBUS is a high-performance,
open and robust bus system which
guarantees smooth communication.
· The system is completely standardized
in IEC 61158/EN 50170, which
means there are no problems in connecting
any standard components
produced by different manufacturers.
· Configuration, start-up and troubleshooting
can be done from anywhere.
This means that the freely programmable
communications relationships
are highly flexible, simple to implement
in practice and easy to change.
With a market share in excess of 80 %,
Ethernet is currently the number one in
the world-wide LAN market. Ethernet
has important characteristics which
could be extremely beneficial for your
application:
· Industrial Ethernet enables the implementation
of open networks. This
network has practically unlimited
communications performance, as
scaleable performance is available
where required using switching technology.
· Industrial Ethernet from SIMATIC
NET, which has been implemented
for years at 10 Mbit/s in accordance
with IEEE 802.3, is now available with
100 Mbit/s Fast Ethernet technology
in accordance with IEEE 802.3u.
· Start-up and trouble-shooting of the
system can be undertaken from anywhere.
· High availability thanks to redundant
network topologies.
Outstanding features
of SoftControl (CP 5613/CP 5614)
PLC quality data consistency
As DP masters, CP 5613 ® /5614 ® and
CP 5613 FO/CP 5614 FO provide rapid,
consistent data transfer to and from the
distributed I/O. The data is always consistent,
which means the user receives
the data in PLC quality in one and the
same DP cycle. This avoids process
values accidentally being sourced from
different DP cycles.
Event / filter mechanism
The new event and filter mechanism
used in the CP 5613/5614 and their
optic fiber versions means that the PC
application is automatically notified by
the CP of any changes to the process
data; queries are no longer required.
This takes considerable pressure off
the CPU on the PC, which is especially
important for applications which
require huge CPU capacity (e.g. HMI or
PC-based PLC applications).
The event and filter mechanism can be
activated on changes to the input or
output data of a DP slave or on
changes to the diagnostics data.
Fast Logic
Rapid links between slave inputs and
outputs, which means devices can be
switched off more quickly.
Outstanding features
of Industrial Ethernet
Time synchronization
In Industrial Ethernet networks, it is
possible to control the time across the
whole plant. This makes it possible to
allocate an exact time to events across
the whole plant.
Fault-tolerant communication
The software package S7-RED-
CONNECT enables PCs to be connected
to the fault tolerant SIMATIC S7
H system. If part of the system fails or a
cable breaks, the system automatically
switches to a reserve system or reserve
network (double bus, redundant ring),
thus maintaining communications at all
times.
Constant data throughput
The protocol processing on the communications
processors enables a constant
throughput of data. They maintain
a stable high level at the same time as
guaranteeing rapid reaction times and
ruling out fluctuating communications
performance. The CPs relieve the PC of
communications functions and use
only a few resources in the PC.
