Introductory Workshop Description
This workshop offers responsive instruction in the theory and applications
of hypnosis in a clinical setting through a mix of lectures, demonstrations,
exercises, and small group practice with supervision and feedback. Instructors
systematically teach to the learning styles and needs of participants. Course
content is organized in a spiral curriculum (conforming to the standards of
training of the American Society of Clinical Hypnosis) with the repetition
of selected topics. Succeeding iterations of a technique, such as hypnotic
induction (initiation), are more complex, increasing participants’ knowledge
and skills. Application topics include therapeutic communication, treatment
planning, self-hypnosis, and hypnosis with children. Participants will choose
sessions on the practice of hypnosis related to their own medical, mental
health, or professional specialization.
Intermediate/Advanced Workshop
Description
This workshop is designed to reflect both the art and science of working
with people to ease anticipatory and in-the-moment anxiety and discomfort
associated with diagnostic and therapeutic medical procedures, such as
radiologic and endoscopic procedures, medical and surgical evaluations (bone
marrow tests, biopsies, etc.) intravenous therapies (e.g. chemotherapy, etc.).
A multi-modal approach, Comfort Talk, that uses Ericksonian and clinical
hypnosis, guided imagery, mindfulness, and focused breathing will be described,
demonstrated, and practiced. The format includes lecture, clinical demonstrations
with video case examples, and opportunities for practical exercises.
The first day will focus on rapid rapport skills, modes of tension diffusion,
hypnoidal language, and basic hypnotic skills adaptable to the fast-paced
modern medical environment. The second day will build upon this skill set
with more advanced techniques in the management of pain and anxiety, as
well as exercises geared towards facilitating application in practice and
overcoming internal and external resistance.
ELIGIBILITY AND TARGET AUDIENCE
This conference is ideal for persons holding a Doctoral Degree in Medicine,
Dentistry, or Psychology; persons holding a Master’s Degree in Social Work,
Marriage and Family Counseling, or Clinical or Counseling Psychology who
are licensed by the state/province in which they practice; a Registered
Nurse with advanced subspecialty training and certification or a Master’s
Degree; or a student actively enrolled in a graduate program leading to
a degree in any of the foregoing. Other Master’s level, licensed health
professionals (e.g., Occupational and Physical Therapists, Speech and
Language Pathologists, et. al.) are welcome and encouraged to attend. This
year only, this Workshop invites and welcomes Radiologic Technicians and
Technologists (ASRT members) for the added unique application of this training
to their professional environment. In addition, professionals who are involved
in the administration of medical procedures are also welcome to attend.
Intermediate/Advanced Workshop Requires Additional Eligibility:
This conference is ideal for health professionals who have had previous
formal training in hypnosis. Participants should have previous experience
in performing hypnotic inductions and facilitating hypnotic phenomena.
However, for this year only, the workshop is designed so qualified
medical professionals do not need prior training in hypnosis.
ACCREDITATION
Accreditation Statement
This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the
Essential Areas and Policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical
Education through the joint sponsorship of the University of Minnesota
and the Minnesota Society of Clinical Hypnosis. The University of
Minnesota is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing
Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians.
AMA Credit Designation Statement
The University of Minnesota designates this live activity for a maximum
of 20.25 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits for the Introductory Workshop
15.25 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits for the Intermediate/Advanced
Workshop and 1.5 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits for the public lecture.
Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of
their participation in the activity.
American Academy of Family Physicians
Application for AAFP credit has been filed with the American Academy of
Family Physicians. Determination of credit is pending.
American Society of Clinical Hypnosis
The Introductory and Intermediate/Advanced Workshops have been
approved by the American Society of Clinical Hypnosis’ Standards of
Training Committee for credit hours toward the Certification and
Approved Consultant requirements.
Minnesota Board of Marriage and Family Therapy
An application for credit has been submitted to the Minnesota Board of
Marriage and Family Therapy.
American Society of Radiologic Technologists
Category A/A+ CE Credit is pending approval by the ASRT.
Minnesota Board of Social Work
This activity has been approved by the State of Minnesota Board of Social
Work for 20.25 continuing education hours for the Introductory Workshop,
15.25 continuing education hours for the Intermediate/Advanced Workshop
and 1.5 continuing education hours for the public lecture.

Professionals
Nurse practitioners, nurses, and other health care professionals who
participate in this CME activity may submit their Statements of Participation
to their appropriate accrediting organizations or state boards for consideration
