Phase One involved determining the need for research, specifically exploring the<br />

problem for nurses of work-related aggression. Previous research on work-related<br />

aggression is presented in the thesis and a broad definition of aggression is offered<br />

that encompasses behaviours that nurses perceive to be aggressive. The role of<br />

nursing culture is discussed, together with arguments as to why it contributes to<br />

under-reporting of aggressive behaviour by nurses. Competency is proposed both as a<br />

psychological constmct and as a standard utilised in nursing for measuring nursing<br />

performance. Limitations and gaps identified in the research literature are presented<br />

and discussed.<br />

In Phase Two the conceptual framework for the present investigation was<br />

developed, exploring the theoretical underpinning of the key concepts of sUess,<br />

cognitive appraisal, coping and social support. A rationale is provided for the<br />

proposed moderator model which was utilised to examine the role of institutional<br />
