As you may be aware, the federal government has reauthorized the Elementary and Secondary School Act
titled No Child Left Behind (NCLB). The reauthorization has mandated several changes in Title 1 schools
with an increased effort to inform parents. I am writing to let you know of some of your rights under NCLB.
Under NCLB, you can request information concerning the professional qualifications of your child’s teacher
(s). To be more specific, you may request any of the following information, at a minimum:
*whether your child’s teacher meets Arizona teacher qualifying and licensing criteria for the grade level or
subject area which the teacher teachers;
*whether your child’s teacher is teaching under emergency or other provisional status from the State Department
of Education;
*the baccalaureate degree major of the teacher and any other graduate certification or degree held by the
teacher;
*whether paraprofessionals (teacher aides) provide any services to your student and, if so, you may request
information on the qualifications of those individuals.
If you would like to request information about No Child Left Behind, please contact me at 696-8301. If you
have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to give me a call. Working together will support our
goal in having another successful school year for all who attend Walter Douglas.
KINDERGARTEN
Happy November! Thank you for coming to your
child’s first parent teacher conference. It is getting
close to the middle of the 2 nd Quarter and your child
will be taking a midterm test. Please keep working
with your child on their review packet. Also remember
to review the dictionary page in your homework folder.
At the end of the month we will be celebrating Thanksgiving
with a friendship fruit salad feast. Please look
for notes that will be coming home. Thank you for your
continued support.
FIRST GRADE
The 1st Grade classes are working hard this quarter to improve
reading fluency. We ask for your continued support each week
as you listen to your child read their fluency homework. The
passages sent home will now be a little longer and a little
harder. This will help your child be ready for December’s
DIBELS testing. Research shows that the more time your child
spends reading, the better reader they will become!
With the change in weather recently we are in need of Kleenex.
We could also use snacks. Thanks for helping!
Please check your child’s homework before it is returned to
school. Now that we are working on addition and subtraction
we want to be sure that students are practicing correctly on
their homework.
SECOND GRADE
Second grade would like to thank you for attending
your child’s conference. We enjoyed meeting with you
and setting goals for the second nine weeks.
Thank you to all of our wonderful families who donated
items to our classrooms! The snacks, tissues and costume
day items were very much appreciated. Also, a
big thank you to our parents who volunteered their
time at the Fall Carnival.
THIRD GRADE
We would like to recognize students who have 100% homework
completed for the month of October.
McKenna, Philip, Zachary, Roberto, Anastasia, and Amelia.
Mrs. Plank’s class: Victoria, Jenaee, Tania, Estrella, Luis,
Kristell, Christian, Mario, Nyssa, Kaitlyn, Marvin, Peter, Danny,
and Sandy. Dr. Popson’s class: Estrella A., Sabrina B., Alex
R., Joshua T., Fanny V., Giovanni W., and Yareli Z.
Thank you for your continued support.
FOURTH GRADE
The permission slip for the Queen Mine/Bisbee field trip
will be sent home on November 17. We will be following
the field trip guidelines for this trip. This means we
will be looking closely at completed homework, behavior
and referrals.
Your child should be reading every day and writing the
number of minutes on their Book It calendar. They are
due to your child’s teacher on November 1.
Daily math fact practice is important for your child to be
successful in Math.
We would appreciate donations of tissues and snacks.
Ms. Trott would like water also.
SIXTH GRADE
The year seems to be flying by in 6 th grade! We are
thankful for all of the families that took the time to meet
with us during Parent-Teacher Conferences last month.
We appreciate the opportunity to meet and honor your
child’s achievements as well as set new goals for the
upcoming quarter. The first progress reports of the 2 nd
quarter will go out the first week of November. Please
check to make sure that your child wears a jacket on
the cold mornings coming up. We know that our independent
6 th graders will often say they are not cold, but
we count on you to make sure they are dressed warmly
despite their protestations. As we prepare to celebrate
Thanksgiving, we are truly grateful for your children and
the support that you provide from home.
FIFTH GRADE
Thank you to all the parents that attended parent conferences
and those parents that have volunteered to work at the carnival
on October 28 th .
Your child should bring their planner home daily.
Please check the planner everyday and encourage your child
to study his/her math facts every night and to turn in completed
assignments on time.
READING KEYS
All 1st and 2nd graders are encouraged to participate in Reading
Keys. Students who complete the monthly activities will be
rewarded with a prize. All students who finish every activity
this year will earn a key necklace and an Eegee’s party.
Please join us at Wendy’s at
4301 N. Oracle Rd. You will
be supporting the 4th grade
Is Your Child Studying Their Math Facts?
Research shows that students need to learn basic math facts efficiently, gain fluency with their use, and retain them over
time. Grover Whitehurst, the Director of the Institute for Educational Sciences (IES) noted during the federal Math Summit
of 2008: “If students do not have fluent retrieval (of basic math facts) then the development of higher order mathematics
skills may be impaired.” At Walter Douglas we have a goal for 90% of our students to master at least 90% of
their grade level math facts. Please help us achieve this goal by making sure your child is studying their math facts on
a nightly basis. If you are looking for resources to assist your child in learning their math facts, two great sites are;
www.playkidgames.com/games/mathfacts and www.sheppardsoftware.com/math.
FROM THE READING LAB
Good readers visualize when they read. Visualizing means making a picture in your
mind about what you are reading. Visualizing is fun and helps you better understand
what you are reading.
BAND/ORCHESTRA
Dear Parents,
Band and Orchestra will be receiving their music for the District Festivals. We will
meet on January 26 th for Orchestra and January 27 th for Band at the High School to
play with our fellow musicians in the other elementary, middle and high schools.
Also, thank you to the students that played in Band Buddy Night over at the High
School. I am sure it was a great experience for all the students. Students will be
bringing home practice cards to be signed. I can only give credit with a parent signature.
Lastly, I sent home a pink sheet at the beginning of the year with all the
dates students will need their instruments. If a student forgets their instrument, their
grade will drop after their first freebie. Please contact me with questions or concerns.
Thank you!
