Mr Jagdish Gandhi
Founder-Manager, CMS
A Living Legend
1. Early life
Jagdish Gandhi was born on 10 th
November 1936, in a poor agricultural family
of Barsauli village, in the district of Aligarh
of the State of Uttar Pradesh. His mother
Bansmati Devi was illiterate, but a highly
spiritual lady. His father late Phool Chand
Agarwal had received education only upto
class VII. Farming was insufficient to make
both ends meet, therefore, he took up a job
as a Patwari (village clerk). There was a
highly religious environment at home and
little Jagdish used to accompany his father
to the temple daily since early childhood.
The devotional songs and hymns had a
profound impact on the mind of young
Jagdish.
2. Flame of social service kindled in
childhood in the Godly environment of his
family
In his early childhood, the inspiration for
social service was instilled by his uncle
Prabhu Dayal, a veteran freedom fighter and
a social worker. Though his uncle was
educated only upto Class V, he was a man of
high ideals with a firm faith in God.
Committed to the service of the nation,
Prabhu Dayal stayed unmarried all his life.
He had good knowledge of the Ramayana,
(‘The holy book of the Hindus’). During the
freedom struggle, Prabhu Dayal went to jail
many times. Even in jail, he used to read the
Ramayana regularly for spiritual guidance.
He was a staunch disciple of Mahatma
Gandhi.
3. Practical lessons in social service from
Uncle Prabhu Dayal
Jagdish Gandhi received his early lessons
on social service from his uncle, Prabhu
Dayal. In those days, Jagdish would lead
processions taking other children along with
him in his village shouting slogans for India’s
freedom.
4. Dream to build a peaceful world free of
war, formed in childhood
On 6th August, 1945 when Jagdish was nine
years old, U.S.A. dropped an atom bomb on
the Japanese city of Hiroshima during the
Second World War. An American plane was
spotted on the horizon of Hiroshima and in
seconds the city was transformed into a ball
of fire after a loud explosion. This was the
first atom bomb named ‘Little Boy’ dropped
The vision of Jagdish Gandhi
Jagdish Gandhi believes in the innate
goodness of every living being. He is an
educationist like no other. His approach to
problems which seem insurmountable is
simple but effective. His every action is
guided by a very strong sense of divinity
and spirituality and hence his every effort
is arrived at improving the self and realizing
the presence of the Almighty.
Jagdish Gandhi, through his noble deeds
and conduct, has always demonstrated
the trust he has placed in people,
displaying that human generosity that
opens up the mind and heart and so often
leads to the accomplishments of major
achievements at the very frontiers of what
is possible. He is convinced that
constructing the defences of peace in the
minds of men starts from the premise that
it is education that lays the foundations of
mutual trust which underlie tolerance and
fruitful cooperation in building a just and
law-abiding world community, supportive
of fundamental freedoms and human
rights. The work of Jagdish Gandhi is a
reflection of this approach and of the desire
to promote the universal values of tolerance
“My Daughter changed me and is my
true Spiritual Mother"—Jagdish Gandhi
A short story on the Turning Point in the life of Mr Jagdish Gandhi,
Founder-Manager of City Montessori School (CMS), Lucknow, India
by Ratan Chandra Gupta, Former Joint Secretary,
Law & Parliamentary Affairs, Govt. of Uttar Pradesh
from the American bomber named ‘Inola Gay’.
About one and a half lakh people including
over 20,000 Koreans were killed in this horrific
attack against humanity.
5. Death and destruction in the atomic
attacks pained young Jagdish
Three days later on the 9th of August, a
second atom bomb named ‘Fat Man’ was
dropped on Nagasaki causing devastating
death and destruction the worst ever
experienced by mankind. On learning about
this catastrophe from the elders of the family,
Jagdish's tender heart cried out in pain.
6. Jagdish felt happy when UNO was
established
Two months and eighteen days after this
heart rending nightmare at Hiroshima and
Nagasaki, United Nations Organization
(UNO) was established on 24th October
1945. After hearing the good news from his
elders about the formation of UNO and end
of the Second World War, he felt happy and
heaved a sigh of relief. Even at that tender
age, Jagdish loyal for peace and was against
wars in the world. He wanted to work for
World Unity.
7. Desire to meet Mahatma Gandhi
Since his childhood, Jagdish was deeply
influenced by Mahatma Gandhi’s teachings
of truth, non-violence, service, simplicity
and inter-religious harmony. He always
dreamt of meeting Mahatma Gandhi. Young
Jagdish pleaded with his uncle, Prabhu
Dayal, to take him to meet Gandhiji and seek
his blessings. His uncle assured him that he
would arrange his meeting with Mahatma
Gandhi. But in those days, Mahatma Gandhi
was busy with the freedom struggle. Under
the leadership of Mahatma Gandhi, India
attained independence on 15th August, 1947,
but was unfortunately, divided into two
countries i.e. India and Pakistan. With the
partition of India, communal riots flared up
all over the country. These riots caused
much ill-will in the country. Indo-Pak
partition will always be remembered as a sad
event in world history.
8. Young Jagdish anguished on hearing
Mahatma Gandhi's assassination
Young Jagdish was anguished when he came
to know about Mahatma Gandhi’s
assassination on 30th January, 1948, within
6 months of India’s independence. 12 year
and education for peace through a more
fruitful, non-sectarian vision, at a time
when every form of intolerance and the
hideous faces of injustice and war are to
be seen all over the world. His efforts have
always been directed to promoting peace
in the minds of men in order that humanity
may move on from a culture of violence to
a culture of sharing, tolerance and justice.
At a time when, in India, as in the rest of
the world, religious, sectarian and
nationalistic hatreds are threatening to tear
apart whole communities and are
destabilizing many regions, Jagdish
Gandhi is to be looked up to for promoting
the ideals of peace, religious harmony,
tolerance and co-existence among
children, the next generation of decisionmakers
and through them, among their
parents, communities and nations.
The following words, pronounced by
Confucius over 2600 years ago, remain
rich with meaning for our lives:
If you are thinking a year ahead — Plant seeds
If you are thinking 10 years ahead — Plant
a tree
If you are thinking 100 years ahead—
Educate the people
— Anirudh Singh
Geeta at 14 years when she
became the Spiritual
Mother of her father
Jagdish Gandhi
old Jagdish, then a student of Class VI,
resolved to follow the teachings of Mahatma
Gandhi and set it as the goal of his life.
9. For love of Mahatma Gandhi, Jagdish
Agarwal became Jagdish Gandhi
With his father’s consent, he wrote a letter
to his school principal requesting him to
change his name from Jagdish Prasad
Agarwal to Jagdish Gandhi. With this, he
vowed to follow the teachings of Mahatma
Gandhi. Since then, he is known by the name
Jagdish Gandhi.
10. Passed Class X examination in first
division from G.S. Hindu Inter College
Jagdish took admission in the G.S. Inter
College located in Sikandra Rao town of
Aligarh district in Uttar Pradesh, the biggest
state of India. He studied with full
dedication, became proficient in all subjects
and passed his High School examination in
the first division.
11. An article on Summer Vacations by
Mahatma Gandhi influenced young Jagdish
An article written by Mahatma Gandhi titled
“Students and the Summer Vacations” was
read by Jagdish which left a deep impression
on him. This article was one of the lessons
in his Class X English book. In this lesson,
Mahatma Gandhi urged the students to
spend their summer vacations, doing some
social work in villages. He wanted the
students to change the life-style of villagers
by altering their orthodox views, giving up
addiction to alcohol, discouraging child
marriage, promoting literacy and improving
sanitary conditions etc. Mahatma Gandhi
wanted rural development by sensitizing the
village folks towards their own social
development and progress.
12. Social Service team formed
Inspired by above article, Jagdish formed a
small team of his classmates comprising 10
to 12 boys. This group was formed for social
service. Membership of this group soon
swelled up to over 50 students of his school.
This group of students carried out extensive
cleaning of slums and drains in the nearby
villages. At the same time, these students
also inspired the villagers to get education
and to eradicate “Parda Pratha” (veil
system), orthodoxy and alcoholism.
13. Jagdish and his team took up sweepers’
work to clean Aligarh City
In January 1952, the Uttar Pradesh Sweepers
Union called upon the sweepers in Aligarh
to go on strike on the issue of pay hike. This
strike lasted for 24 days and threw the city
sanitation in Aligarh out of gear. As a result
of this strike, the drains and roads in Aligarh
were choked with garbage, dirty water and
filth . Unsanitary conditions prevailed.
Jagdish met the then District Magistrate of
Aligarh, Mr K.C. Mittal, and spearheaded a
movement of cleaning the city with his fifty
associates. This “operation” lasted for ten
days and as many as 90 truck loads of
garbage and filth were removed from the city.
14. Aligarh city became neat and clean due
to the voluntary service of Jagdish and his
team
As a consequence, Aligarh became neat and
clean again. The intelligentsia in Aligarh was
also motivated to join the effort. The district
administration conceded to the genuine
demand of sweepers and promised them a
pay hike.
15. Governor of U.P. rewarded Jagdish and
his team with a cash prize
The then Governor of U.P., H.E. Shri K.M.
Munshi, honoured this group of activists
with a cash prize of rupees 4,600. This
Speech of Chief Guest
Hon Mr
Justice
Sirpurkar
Judge,
Supreme
Court of India
at a Seminar
on September
28, 2007 on the
theme "Empowering the
International Court of Justice to take
suo motu action in matters
concerning human problems"
organized by International Bench &
Bar Association at New Delhi
My esteemed elder brother Justice
Qureshi, another elder brother
Justice Venkatanarayanan, the
Dronacharya of India Sri Jagdish Gandhi —
Dronacharya taught 105 princes, Mr Gandhi
is teaching 32,000 princes and princesses
— Mr Gupta, the other dignitaries on the
dais, the lawyers who are present and
present with all their patience at their
command, students from abroad, ladies and
gentlemen,
Any idea before it is developed is in the
shape of a seed. That seed ultimately sprouts
into a tree and one tree develops into a
beautiful, green jungle. Like that, this
Dronacharya among us saw a small tree,
considered one child as the focal point and
it spread and went on spreading, that is how
that huge school, CMS, came into being
and is still there with all its glory. The
original Dronacharya taught only 105
princes but our Dronacharya — Jagdish
Gandhi — teaches more than 32,000
princes and princesses in his school.
In 2002 my good old friend, late Justice
Ashok Desai, who was then the Chief
Justice of Uttaranchal, told me that there is
going to be a Conference of the Chief
Justices of the world in Lucknow. He said,
“Brother, why don't you come.”
I was then the Chief Justice of the Madras
High Court. I said, “Conference of the Chief
Justices?” I thought it would be some
judicial conference. He said, it is a judicial
conference, but it is not in that sense a
judicial conference. The Chief Justices of
the World are coming and thinking on
human problems. I said, “It's very rare that
two lawyers agree, and it is still rarer that
two judges agree and it is still rarer if chief
justices are going to agree. When so many
chief justices are going to come from all
the nooks and corners of the world, what is
going to be the result? Who could think
that such a conference is possible, or that
such conference if held is going to help the
humankind, the mankind.”
Therefore, I said that every idea when it is
conceived it's a small idea. But there are
very few people who have that telescopic
vision and the time of seeing an idea, that
this idea can become the world thought
tomorrow. We had one person called
Mahatma Gandhi, who thought that even
without raising a 'danda' (wooden staff) —
the 'danda' he used only for his own support
— or even without firing a bullet, the mighty
British Empire can be driven out of the
country. He just saw this idea. Ultimately,
what we have done of Mahatma Gandhi is
another matter. We have been successful in
creating his statues, we have been
successful going there only on 2nd October,
garlanding him and then forgetting Gandhi,
amount was used by enthusiastic Jagdish
to build a hall in his college which was later
known as “Social Service Hall”. At that time,
Jagdish was a student of Class X.
16. Jagdish took admission in Mathura, the
land of legendary Lord Krishna for his
Class XI (Higher Secondary) studies
In Mathura, Jagdish took admission in Class
XI in “Champa Agarwal College”. He lived
in a rented room with other students who
were praying, cooking and eating together.
In that college he launched a movement ‘Be
A Good Student’. It was basically an attempt
for starting a symbolic reform in educational
system.
17. Money for woollen clothes donated to
sweeper for his daughters' marriage
He received some money from his father to
buy woollen clothes for the winter. However,
Jagdish spent a major amount of this money
in charity. He gave this money to a poor
sweeper for the marriage of his two
daughters. With the remaining money
Jagdish got himself ordinary coarse clothes
of thick gunny bag -'TAAT' for their cheap
price. That very year Jagdish was honoured
with the title of “Best Student” of the college.
18. Revolutionary Raja Mahendra Pratap
inspired Jagdish to work for a World
Government
Raja Mahendra Pratap motivated Jagdish to
serve the entire humanity. When Jagdish
called on Raja Mahendra Pratap in his Prem
Mahavidyalaya College, Vrindavan, the later
presented a copy of his 4 page Hindi
monthly publication titled 'Sansar Sangh'
(World Union) which he himself published
and printed. Raja Mahendra Pratap had
founded an institution, Prem Mahavidyalaya
in Vrindavan. The monthly magazine inspired
Jagdish to form a “World Union” and
systematically strive for “World Unity”.
19. Jagdish came to Lucknow as a student
but decided to stay on and make it a centre
of World Unity Education
Jagdish Gandhi took admission in Lucknow
University for B.Com studies in July 1955.
He took shelter in a small temple on the bank
of Gomti River, as he had no money to stay
in a hostel or a rented accommodation. He
started teaching children in exchange of one
or two chapatis (Indian bread) and thereafter
decided to own a little money by way of
tuitions. Not only did he teach the prescribed
subjects but also preached the value of
World Unity, Brotherhood and Oneness of
Mankind to his pupils.
20. Got into students' politics and was
elected Union President
He became very popular with students and
was elected Vice-President of Lucknow
University Students Union in 1957 when he
was in M.Com first year. In 1958, while he
was in M.Com Part II Jagdish Gandhi won
the Students’ Union election for President
with a thumping majority. He contested both
elections through his personal contacts and
immense goodwill without spending a single
penny.
21. Marriage with Bharti
During this time, Jagdish came in contact
with a young girl, Bharti, at a spiritual
gathering (Satsang). Bharti was then
studying for a degree in Master of Education
(M.Ed) at Lucknow University. They met
again at a religious congregation organised
in honour of Jagatguru Sankaracharya
Nardanand Saraswati’s visit to Lucknow.
Both got attracted to each other’s spiritual
leanings. Jagdish Gandhi presented three
books written by Mahatma Gandhi and Sant
Vinoba Bhave to Bharti. These books were
(1) 'Sewa ki Pagdandi' (The Path of Service)
(2) 'Stree Shakti' (Women Power) and (3)
'Geeta Pravachan' (Preaching of the Geeta).
Both held similar views on spirituality and
both aspired to serve society by imparting
meaningful education to children. Soon,
Jagdish and Bharti got married and tied the
knot on 15 January 1959.
22. Marriage attended by Governor V.V. Giri
The dowryless, simple marriage ceremony
was attended by His Excellency V.V. Giri, the
then Governor of Uttar Pradesh who later
became the President of India. The marriage
was also attended by the then Chief Minister
of the State, Dr Sampurnanand, members of
state cabinet, university professors,
educationists and a large number of
students.
23. No marriage feast, but sugar candy
distributed to invitees
The marriage was solemnized with the
recitation of Vedic Hymns (Mantras) by a
friend and Sanskrit teacher by taking seven
rounds of the sacred fire by the couple. The
guests were offered crushed candy (Mishri)
powder in place of feast, which the young
couple could not afford. Jagdish and Bharti
addressed the gathering taking a vow that
they would serve society by imparting
meaningful education to children.
24. 'World marries India'
Governor V.V. Giri, attended the marriage and
gave his blessings to the couple with the
words “Jagdish (World) weds Bharti (India).
May God bless the couple!,” he said. The
gathering clapped in appreciation of the
comparison.
25. The couple dedicated themselves to
make education a medium for social
transformation
Jagdish and Bharti Gandhi laid the
foundation of City Montessori School on
1st July 1959 in their hired house at 12,
Station Road, Lucknow. This house on a rent
of Rs. 64/- per month was allotted to Jagdish
Gandhi by the then District Magistrate of
Lucknow, Mr K.C. Mittal, IAS. He was the
same District Magistrate who allowed
Jagdish with his 50 members to clean the
city of Aligarh and thereafter awarded a cash
prize of Rs. 4,600/- to the social service group
for cleaning Aligarh city. For 15 days no
student came to take admission. On 16th July,
Bharti Gandhi requested her neighbour,
Jasoda Devi Agarwal, wife of Sohan Lal
Agarwal, to be good enough to send their
children to her school. Jasoda Devi Agarwal,
was impressed by the Gandhi couple’s
dedication towards children’s education and
sent five children of their joint family with
an advance monthly fees of Rs. 25/-. Jasoda
Devi’s husband Sohan Lal Agarwal was
requested to inaugurate the school. At the
time of inauguration of the school there were
only 5 children apart from Mr and Mrs Sohan
Lal Agarwal and Mr and Mrs Gandhi. Sohan
Lal Agarwal was a great philanthropist. He
inaugurated the school and gave Rs. 1000/-
as donation. The school purchased
furniture, toys, books and other items with
this money.
26. Jagdish Gandhi elected MLA in 1969
Jagdish Gandhi was elected as a Member of
Uttar Pradesh State Legislative Assembly
as an independent candidate from Aligarh
district from (1969 to 1974). Only 11
independent members from the state were
elected for the State Assembly.
27. Elected President of U.P. Progressive
Independent Legislators Party
Jagdish Gandhi formed a Uttar Pradesh
Progressive Independent Legislators Party
and was unanimously elected its President.
The same year in 1969, President of India,
Shri Zakir Hussain, died and hence election
process for a new President was started.
Jagdish Gandhi put up a proposal to his
party to support the candidature of V.V. Giri,
the then Vice President of India, for
Presidentship, provided he agreed to
contest the election as a non-party
(independent) candidate.
28. Jagdish Gandhi wanted President of a
democratic country as a non-party person
Jagdish was of the opinion that since the
President is the representative of the whole
country and protector of the constitution,
he should not represent any political party.
He strongly felt that the candidate should
be a non-party person of integrity and
character and should normally be elected
unopposed and should be an independent
candidate. He put his proposal before his
party (Legislator’s group) and suggested
that V. V. Giri resign from Congress Party
and then contest for the highest office of
the country as a non party independent
candidate and that he should not seek
approval of Congress Party for his
candidature. This proposal was accepted by
his party unanimously and it was decided
that V.V. Giri should be apprised of the
decision and advised to resign from
Congress Party to seek election as an
independent candidate and Jagdish Gandhi
be sent to New Delhi for advising him
accordingly.
29. Close friendship with Governor V.V.
Giri
Jagdish Gandhi knew V.V. Giri very well, ever
since he was President of Lucknow
University Students Union and V.V. Giri was
the Governor of Uttar Pradesh. When
Jagdish Gandhi got elected as President of
Lucknow University Students Union, he
requested the then Prime Minister of India,
Jawahar Lal Nehru, to inaugurate his
Students Union. He agreed and came to
Lucknow to inaugurate the students union.
Failure is the only opportunity to begin again, more intelligently.
V.V. Giri, also attended the inaugural
ceremony and he had also attended Jagdish
Gandhi’s wedding. Later, when V.V. Giri was
appointed as Vice-President of India, Jagdish
often met him in New Delhi.
30. Morarjee Desai once stayed with Jagdish
at the latter’s residence in Lucknow
Jagdish Gandhi went to Delhi to meet V.V.
Giri in connection with the presidential
election. But before meeting V.V. Giri he
decided to meet Morarji Desai, the then
member of the working committee of All India
Congress Committee on 12th May 1969, to
find out whether Congress Party would give
a party ticket to V.V. Giri to contest the election
for the President’s post or it had made up its
mind to give the ticket to someone else.
Therefore, Jagdish Gandhi first met Morarji
Desai as he knew him well. Morarji Desai
was constrained to resign as Finance
Minister of the country under Kamraj Plan.
Morarji Desai was President of All India
Prohibition Committee and Jagdish Gandhi
was the President of the U.P. State
Prohibition Committee. As President of the
State Prohibition Committee, he invited
Morarji Desai to Lucknow to inaugurate the
State Prohibition Conference. Morarji Desai
accepted the invitation and stayed with the
Gandhis at their residence at 12, Station
Road, Lucknow and had meals with them,
cooked by Bharti Gandhi.
31. Jagdish Gandhi disappointed with
Morarji Desai’s reply
At Delhi, when asked about the Congress
Party candidate to be fielded for President’s
election, Morarji Desai quipped “It will be
decided in Congress Working Committee
Meeting to be held at Hyderabad on 27 May
1969.” Jagdish Gandhi asked him whether
they would consider the candidature of V.V.
Giri, Vice President, for the post of President.
To this, Morarji Desai replied that he was
too old to be the President of India. It was
clear to Jagdish that the capitalist lobby of
Congress Party headed by Morarji Desai
would oppose V.V. Giri, who was supposed
to belong to the socialist lobby.
32. Congress Working Committee divided
into two camps
At that time Congress Working Committee
was divided in two camps. One camp had
leanings towards the capitalist lobby and
the other towards the socialist lobby. There
were seven members of Congress Working
Committee, out of which four members were
considered as the members of the capitalist
lobby and the other three belonging to the
socialist lobby. Morarji Desai was
considered the leader of the capitalist lobby
and Indira Gandhi as leader of the socialist
lobby. Jagdish Gandhi got an impression that
V.V. Giri would not be given ticket to contest
for Presidentship.
33. Jagdish Gandhi's advice to V.V. Giri
After meeting Morarji Desai, Jagdish Gandhi
went to President’s house to meet V.V.Giri
who was then the Acting President, apart
from being the Vice-President of India.
Jagdish Gandhi advised him to resign from
Congress Party and contest for President’s
election, as an independent candidate, as
the President of the country was the
representative of the entire country and
should not belong to any particular political
party. The President is a protector of the
Constitution and its sentinel. Hence, he
should be an independent candidate.
34. V.V. Giri unwilling to resign from
Congress Party
V. V. Giri told Jagdish that he was nearly 75
years old. He had been in Congress Party
right from childhood for nearly 60 years and
Congress was in his blood. ‘I will not resign
from Congress Party’, he declared. Jagdish
Gandhi told Giri that he doubted if he would
get the party ticket for contesting the
President’s election. Therefore, he should
resign from the Congress Party and decide
to contest President’s election as an
independent candidate before his
candidature was rejected by the majority of
members of the Congress Working
Committee.
35. V.V. Giri confident of getting Congress
Party ticket
V.V. Giri told Jagdish that there were two Vs
in his name. First V stood for victory in
getting Congress ticket for Presidentship
and second V stood for victory in election
for the post of the President of India. Yet
Jagdish persisted in his plea to contest as
an independent candidate.
36. Jagdish Gandhi’s views published
But V.V. Giri did not agree and Jagdish
returned to Aligarh disappointed. His friend
— Henry Ford
Madan Lal Hitaishi, Editor of Dainik Prakash,
a daily newspaper published from Aligarh
published full details of the conversation
between Jagdish Gandhi and V.V. Giri in his
daily ‘Dainik Prakash’ of 15 May, 1969 issue.
37. Turn of Events — a call from
Rashtrapati Bhavan
After 15 days on 27th May 1969 at 5.00 pm
in the evening Jagdish got a phone call from
Jagannath Sahai, Additional Private
Secretary to the President of India, that there
was disquieting news from Hyderabad that
V.V. Giri had not been given the Congress
ticket. "It is sad news and Shri V.V. Giri is
very much perturbed", he said. "He has asked
you to come to Delhi by the earliest available
flight and meet him immediately", he pleaded.
But there was no flight available for Delhi
that day. Jagdish told him that he would
travel by night train and reach Delhi by 7.00
am next morning. Jagdish Gandhi reached
New Delhi station on 28th May 1969 at 7.00
am. Shankar Giri and Bhaskar Giri, two sons
of VV Giri, were there at the station to escort
him to President’s House.
38. Ultimately Mr. Gandhi convinced
V.V. Giri to contest as an independent
candidate and resign from the Congress
Party
After much persuasion, consultations and
discussions with the family members of V. V.
Giri including his wife, Saraswati Giri, sons
Shankar Giri and Bhaskar Giri, daughter in
law Mohini Giri, wife of Bhaskar Giri, Jagdish
Gandhi, got him to resign from the Congress
Party and contest as an independent
candidate for the post of President against
the official Congress candidate. Only a few
days before the election, Indira Gandhi also
declared that as per her conscience she
would support V.V. Giri and advised other
members of her group accordingly.
39. V.V. Giri elected President of India
Shri V.V. Giri an independent candidate was
elected as President of India, defeating the
official Congress candidate. Jagdish Gandhi
was very happy that his mission was
accomplished as the country got an
Independent President, who was not a
nominee of any Political Party.
40. Jagdish visits London in 1972, to study
the democratic system of governance of
England and parliamentary procedures of
the British Parliament
A.G. Kher, Speaker of U.P. Assembly and
Narain Dutt Tewari, the Chief Minister of
U.P., selected Jagdish Gandhi to visit
London in 1972 to study the democratic
system of governance of England and
parliamentary procedures of the British
Parliament on behalf of the U.P. Government.
41. 'India International Club' founded and
2nd International Youth Conference
organised in London
Jagdish Gandhi founded the 'India
International Club.' Under the auspices of
this club a 3-day long 2nd International
Youth Conference was organized in Victoria
Hall, Middlesex (London). This conference
was held on 17, 18 and 19 December 1974.
With the help of the ruling Labour Party, the
conference deliberated upon the topic
“World Peace through Education.” Prior to
it, Mr Gandhi had organized the first
International Youth Conference at K.D. Singh
Babu Stadium in Lucknow in 1973 along with
14 th All India Children & Youth Festival which
he had been organizing every year, for the
past 14 years. In the conference held in
London representatives of 47 countries
participated. These participants included
statesmen, diplomats, members of high
commissions, members of embassies and
students and teachers of various universities
of England.
42. Jagdish embraced Baha’i Faith with a
vow to serve humanity
When the adherents of Baha’i Faith
expressed their views (in the London Youth
Conference), Mr. Gandhi was deeply
impressed with their spiritual philosophy. It
was maintained by the Founder of Baha’i
Faith, Lord Baha‘u’llah, that the “Earth is
but one country and the mankind its
citizens”. Baha’i Faith believes that God is
One, Religion is One and Mankind is One.
Baha’i Faith believes that the entire humanity
must be united. Gandhi was already a
promoter of “World Unity” and for this
reason he accepted the Baha’i Faith in
London. From then on, Jagdish has been
striving to make children of his school a Gift
of God to Mankind and a Pride of the Human
Race and a potential Light of the World.
(Continued on page 3)

CMS BULLETIN - THE TURNING POINT OCTOBER 2007 (3)
(Continued from page 2)
43. It is obligatory on the part of a Bahai to
be loyal to the Government
A Baha’i should not take part in political
activities. Jagdish Gandhi was an MLA
before accepting the Baha’i faith. He was
inclined to contest polls in 1977 too.
However, he was restrained from doing so
by his daughter Geeta, who was also a Baha’i.
Jagdish Gandhi was reminded by his
daughter that as a Baha’i he was duty-bound
to purify his soul and to unify the hearts of
human beings across the world and
participation in politics would hamper his
spiritual progress. Geeta was merely 14 years
old then. Jagdish Gandhi realized his spiritual
responsibility and felt that he could not serve
the children of his school with total
dedication if he stayed in politics. At last
he realized that he could do better as an
administrator of the school if he quit politics
for ever and devote all his time for promoting
meaningful education. Geeta said that
selfless service done with a resolve to serve
humanity is the true worship of God.
44. Daughter Geeta became his spiritual
mother and saved him from the wrong path.
Thus for his spiritual development, he
sacrificed his political ambition
If someone gets into politics it is difficult to
come out of it. In the political game one puts
everything at stake. Jagdish Gandhi said,
‘I tried to convince my daughter that there
was scope for serving humanity in a political
career too. However, it was difficult to pacify
her since she strongly adhered to her views.’
"My daughter asked me two questions: (a)
'What will happen to my faith in Baha’u’llah
which was implanted by you in me?'
(b) 'What will happen to my faith in my own
father?'These questions shook
Jagdish Gandhi from within.
45. Turning Point in the life of
Jagdish Gandhi
Eventually Jagdish Gandhi decided to quit
politics for ever. He realized that his
daughter had acted as the saviour of his soul.
So Jagdish Gandhi accepted her as his
‘Spiritual Mother’. This was how his
daughter (Geeta) played a major role in
saving the “moral-self” (or soul) of Jagdish
Gandhi. Besides, she also preserved the
unity of the family. Jagdish Gandhi took a
firm resolve to quit politics forever in 1977.
Now he is of the opinion that a teacher
should never participate in politics. If a
teacher gets into active political life, he will
ignore his students and his duty towards
them. As a consequence, education and
character building of children would suffer.
As Baha'i Faith stands for unity of mankind
party politics would run counter to that idea.
Hence Baha'i Faith does not allow its
followers to participate in politics.
46. Jagdish Gandhi was convinced that
Bahai teachings of brotherhood would bring
unity and peace on earth.
On being reminded by his daughter Geeta
about the Bahai teachings his soul was reawakened
and rekindled. He came to the
conclusion that the perennial conflicts and
controversies would come to an end if
humanity accepted the unity of God, unity
of religions and the unity of mankind as
advocated by Bahaullah. Therefore, he made
up his mind to re-dedicate his efforts for
realizing the dream of Bahaullah's teachings
because he found them most appropriate in
the prevailing circumstances to bring an end
to conflicts and wars in the world. He is now
fully convinced that the answer to the
problems of mankind today can come to an
end if we can realize the goal of a single
political world order, which would include
one currency, one educational system, one
language alongwith mother tongue, uniform
weights and measures.
47. Firm belief that meaningful education
can deliver the world from its problems
He wants to begin with education of children
because he believes that the younger
generation alone can deliver the world from
its problems by applying the teachings of
Bahai faith. Therefore, he has introduced and
re-modified the CMS prayer system to
accommodate the great teachings of Bahai
faith in order to bring home to children the
virtues of unity of God, unity of religions
and unity of mankind. His efforts have
brought fruitful results as the students of
CMS fully subscribe to unity of God, unity
of religions and unity of mankind. It would
be no exaggeration to say that CMS students
are the most broad-minded persons in the
world whose conduct and behavior reflect
these great teachings.
48. Promotion of world unity and world
peace the principal aim of life.
Promotion of world unity and world peace is
now the principal aim of his life. To promote
this thinking among the masses he has been
holding weekly world unity satsangs as well
as writing articles in newspapers and
magazines. His speeches and writings have
made a deep impact on the minds of the
people and as the comments of the listeners
or the readers indicate his appeal for Unity
of God, Unity of Religions and Unity of
Mankind has found favour with the inner
souls of the masses.
49. Gandhi dedicates himself completely to
the cause of education
After quitting politics Jagdish focused his
attention entirely on the CMS family. Under
his leadership CMS has made rapid
progress. CMS is his life and blood. Gandhi
has a mission to make every CMS child both
good and smart, a gift of God to mankind
and pride of the human race. He believes
that every child is a potential light of the
world and should try to became a Total
Quality Person (TQP). Nurturing children is
the core of his mission and philosophy.
50. Sometimes, a prize or an award honours
a person and sometimes awards get
honoured by the recipient
Through the movement of World Unity and
World Peace, CMS has gone global and is
recognized by major international
organizations.
(1) Founded with five children in 1959 by
Mr. and Mrs. Jagdish Gandhi, CMS is
already in the Guinness Book of World
Records for having more than 32,000
students on its roll. (2) CMS is also the first
school to be honoured with the UNESCO
Prize for Peace Education in 2002 carrying a
cash component of US $ 30,000. It is to be
noted here that this UNESCO prize was given
to India only thrice. First UNESCO prize was
conferred on General Rikhi of Indian Army
for his services as UN Peace Force
Commander. The second was conferred upon
Mother Teresa in 1992 for her humanitarian
services. CMS was its third Indian recipient.
Later in 2006, CMS was invited by UNESCO
to nominate candidate for this prize because
as a past laureate CMS became eligible to
submit on nomination. Mr Gandhi decided
to nominate Judge C. G. Weeramantry, former
Vice President, International Court of Justice
who was a regular participant of the
International Conference of Chief Justices
of the World that Mr Gandhi convenes every
year in December. Judge Weeramantry got
this prestigious prize becoming the first Sri
Lankan and first judge in the world to be
honoured with this prize in Peace Education.
(3) Third major achievement of CMS was
the Nuclear-Free Future Special
Achievement Award 2004 from Germany. (4)
World’s Children’s Prize for the Rights of
the Child 2004 from Sweden. (5) Jagdish
Gandhi has been declared as awardee of
Aman Peace Prize from Dubai. (6) CMS is
the first and only school organising 24
international events every year to facilitate
promoting world unity and world peace
through education as per Guinness Book of
World Records. (7) Jagdish Gandhi is the
recipient of “Derozio Award” 2000 for his
contributions to education and human
enrichment by the Council for the Indian
School Certificate examination (ICSE
Council). It carried rupees 1,00,000/- (one lac)
cash award and a gold medal. He was
declared Peace Representative of Lucknow
by World Peace Prayer Society, Japan. (8)
For promoting communal harmony he was
awarded “Waris Ali Shah Award for
Communal Harmony” and was declared a
U.P. Ratna by the All India Intellectuals
Forum.
51. Gandhi sends Resolution to Secretary-
General of UNO, Dr Kofi Annan with one
lakh signatories
This resolution sent on 1st September 1999
had one lakh signatures of students and
their parents of CMS in which an appeal was
made for world unity. It was also appealed
that a World Government should be formed
and none of its members should have veto
power. It was held that only “World
Government” could save the future of two
billion children and generations yet-to-be
born from the perils of environmental
imbalance, catastrophe resulting from atomic
bombs and world wide terrorism. In their
appeal they urged the Secretary General to
pay attention to article 51 of the Indian
Constitution which relates to international
peace and security and which also lays
stress on fostering respect for international
law.
52. Dr Kofi Annan’s response to Gandhi's
Resolution
Dr Annan replied on 11 th Oct. 1999 and wrote
to Mr Gandhi that UNO has no power of its
own and that its power lay in the decisions
taken by member states. Dr. Kofi Annan
wrote that on 6th, 7th and 8th September
2000, a Millennium Summit would be held in
New York. It would be the biggest gathering
of the Heads of State of all the Governments
of the World. This conference would
consider the global scenario and the leaders
would consider the world situation of the
21 st century and would decide as to what
steps are required to be taken to make the
21 st century more humane, since the 20 th
century had been a century of bloodshed,
chaos and confusion.
53. Letter to Heads of State i.e. the Prime
Ministers and Presidents of all countries.
Mr. Gandhi wrote to the Heads of States of
all countries in which he stated that for
framing international laws and international
arbitration, a "new political and economic
world order” was essential. It was essential
also for the creation of “World Government”
which would safeguard the future of world’s
two billion children and the generations yetto-be
born. However, this Millennium
Summit failed badly as far as creation of a
"new political and economic world order”
was concerned.
54. Enforceable International Law — the
binding thread of all humanity
It is clearly evident that world leaders are
not able to control or stop territorial wars
and terrorism. Global Society finds itself
helpless and disappointed in such a difficult
situation. Their last hope rests on World’s
Judicial System. Every citizen of the world
has lots of hope, faith and respect for world
judiciary. Nobody has any faith on politicians
and rulers, as they have failed in establishing
peace in the world.
55. CMS launched a movement to
safeguard the future of world’s two billion
children and generations yet-to-be-born and
to make the world a family as visualized in
Article 51 of Indian Constitution
Jagdish Gandhi consulted his University
classmate Mr. Justice Syed Saghir Ahmed,
former Judge of Supreme Court of India in
this regard. A round table conference was
organized under the leadership of Mr. Justice
Syed Saghir Ahmed on Article 51 of the
Constitution of India, on 14th January 2001.
The judicial fraternity gave a thumping
support to this conference.
56. An All India Seminar on Article 51 of
Indian Constitution
After this, Jagdish Gandhi organized an All
India Seminar on Article 51 of Indian
Constitution, which was inaugurated by Mr.
Justice R. S. Pathak, Former Chief Justice of
Supreme Court of India and former Judge of
International Court of Justice, Member
Permanent Court of Arbitration, the Hague
and Honorary Member of Gray’s Inn Bench,
London. Mr Justice Rangnath Misra, Former
Chief Justice of India presided over it. It was
also attended by Mr Justice V.R. Krishna
Iyer, former Judge, Supreme Court of India
and a large number of local judges
participated in the seminar.
57. 'International Conferences of Chief
Justices of the World' discuss need for
formation of World Parliament and
enactment of Enforceable International Law
To promote this idea at international level
CMS has been organising an International
Conference of the Chief Justices of the World
and World Judiciary Summit on Article 51 of
the Constitution of India, every year for the
past seven years. Chief Justices, Judges,
jurists, legal experts and peace activists from
all over the world have been taking part in
this conference. There has been a
continuous increase in the number of
participants every year which is a proof of
the popularity and success of the
conference of Chief Justices of the world.
58. Resolution at the end of every
international conference of Chief Justices
of the world.
At the end of every conference a resolution
is passed by the chief Justices of the world.
In the conference held in the year 2006 the
resolution called for giving importance to
peace education in school curricula
throughout the world, compulsory study of
international law in judicial education &
training, popularising international law
among judicial organizations and protect
and promote the best interests of children.
59. Strengthening of UNO and formation
of a World Government
At the same time, CMS idea of strengthening
the United Nations Organisation, formation
of a World Government, enactment of
enforceable international law to deal with
international terrorism and establish world
unity and lasting peace to safeguard the
future of world’s two billion children and
generations yet to be born, is getting
overwhelming support.
60. 8 th International Conference of Chief
Justices of the World in December 2007
Under the guidance and supervision of
Jagdish Gandhi, the 8th International
Conference of Chief Justices of the World
will be organised by CMS at Lucknow during
December 2007, in which a large number of
Chief Justices judges, legal luminaries, peace
organisations and peace activists of various
countries are expected to take part.
61. Mankind does not need atomic weapons,
it needs a global society based on justice
All law courts are the platforms to bring to
light the truth through non-violent methods.
Lawyers and judges all over the world try to
find out the truth through exercise of their
logical minds and settle the issues through
truth and non-violence. In the age of nuclear
bombs, 36,000 nuclear bombs have already
been made by a number of countries and
eighty countries have stockpiled chemical
and biological weapons of mass destruction.
62. Empowering International Court of
Justice
Today there is a Village Panchayat to solve
the problems of a village. There is a District
Court at district level, a High Court at state
level and a Supreme Court at national level.
Similarly the judgements of the International
Court of Justice should be binding on
member countries and individuals. In the
absence of enforceable international law, the
world is heading towards a disaster. UNO
with five privileged veto power nations finds
itself incapable of preventing wars. Under
these circumstances, the provisions of
Article 51 of the Indian Constitution are the
only hope for global justice.
63. Pt. Nehru's quote, "Either the world
will unite or it will perish"
Provision of Article 51 in Indian Constitution
is a unique provision which requires that
the Union of India and its citizens (a) will
promote international peace and security (b)
maintain just and honourable relations
between the nations of the world (c) foster
respect for international law and (d)
encourage settlement of international
disputes by arbitration. The time has come
when humanity should live as one family. If
all of us do not join hands to make the world
an enlarged family, the entire humanity will
perish in animosity. All countries of the world
should come forward and take the initiative
to incorporate the provisions of Article 51
of Indian Constitution in their country’s
constitutions.
64. Jagdish Gandhi has given slogans for
promotion of World Unity
Some of these are (i) Jai Jagat (Let us do
good to the entire world) (2) School is a light
house of Society (3) Aao Dosti Karein (come
let us be friends) (4) One day I will Unite the
World (5) Global Tie (Global trends in
Education) (6) Make every child good and
smart, a gift of God to mankind, a pride of
human race and a potential light of the world
(7) Create Enforceable International Law and
empower the International Court of Justice
(8) 'Catch them Innocent' to impart value and
virtue-based education to children. Jagdish
Gandhi organises World Unity
Congregation (Satsang) every Sunday at
CMS, Gomti Nagar.
65. Small house, large occupancy
Jagdish Gandhi hired 12 Station Road house
in 1958 on a monthly rent of Rs. 64/-. But
there was no money to pay the rent. There
was a proposal from a gentleman Mr B.P.
Johari to share the accommodation and pay
50% of the rent i.e. Rs. 32/- per month. Bharti
Gandhi had almost accepted the offer but
Jagdish Gandhi refused. It was God’s will
that he spurned the offer and saved the
house as his residence for over five decades.
The house opens only towards the Station
Road and closed from other three sides.
Living rooms have no attached baths and
toilets and no cross ventilation.
67. A new dimension in education
Thus the second daughter of Mr Gandhi, Dr
Geeta Gandhi Kingdon, became the saviour
of his soul. On her advice, as his spiritual
mother, he renounced politics forever and
committed himself totally to the noble cause
of education. This has enabled him to make
continuous efforts for building a bright and
safe future of the 32,000 children of CMS as
well as two billion children of the world and
the generations yet-to-be born. Jagdish
Gandhi wants to make children Good and
Smart, a Gift of God to Mankind, a Pride of
the Human Race and a potential Light of the
World. The idea which appears utopian
today will become a reality tomorrow.
68. Message of World Unity on Eid and
Deepawali
Jagdish Gandhi believes in Unity of God,
Unity of Mankind, Universal Brotherhood
and World Peace. Being a Baha'i, he believes
in the teachings of the founder of Baha'i
religion, Baha'u'llah, who said 'So powerful
is the light of unity that it can illumine the
whole world.'
On the occasion of Deepawali and Eid he
conveys his greetings to all Principals,
teachers, parents of CMS and people of
Lucknow for their happiness and prosperity.
May these festivals illumine our souls and
unite us in their luminosity.
Speech of Chief Guest
Hon Mr Justice Sirpurkar,
Judge, Supreme Court
Advocates Supreme Court attending the
Seminar on Empowering the Interntional
Court of Justice at New Delhi
Gandhism and Gandhi thought for the rest
of the year — but that is a different matter.
What I am trying to point out is that an idea
when it is conceived, there has to be a
visionary to develop that idea. I congratulate
Mr Gandhi for developing this idea. Now
see how beautifully he has picked up. We
have England, we have America, Bosnia,
Serbia and what not. But one thing is very
common in all the countries and that is
children. There is yet to be a father or there
is yet to be a mother born who doesn't love
his child. What Mr Gandhi probably has
thought in developing a beautiful school is
that feeling of love, the parental love that
every person has. I him, you, everybody
— we all have that parental love and any
idea if it is to be developed has to be based
not on hatred, but on love. Unless an idea,
a concept is based on love, it can never
develop. Because, the moment the idea is,
say, based on competition, based on hatred,
'I want your head, you want mine', 'I want
this state of yours, you want mine' — if this
is the idea, then that idea can never become
a global idea. Parental love, love of the
mother, whether she is a Serbian mother,
whether she is an Afghan mother, whether
she is a Bangladeshi mother, she remains
a mother.
And therefore, the focal point of the
brotherhood had to, and very rightly had to,
begin with children. Therefore, he created
a beautiful school.
Now if the idea had to be international, there
had to be some other factor which is
common in all the countries. Apart from
other aspects, which is the most common
aspect governing all countries? That
common aspect was law. And, that is how
probably Mr Gandhi turned to law. The
development of law, the adherence of law
— no country says that we are a jungle
country. Every country will say, we are
governed as per our own laws. Law is a
common aspect for all the countries of the
world. There are 192 countries including
veto countries and non-veto countries are
also included.
Once you catch one common aspect, then
only you can continue. So here are now two
common points. One point was the children
— everybody would care for the child, his
or her own child. The second common point
was law. And then how to bring that law
together was the idea of calling of the
conference of the chief justices. This was
probably what was in his mind and while
Mr Gandhi was speaking, I was thinking as
to why should this man who is living in
Lucknow, running a school, is a teacher,
should call for an
International
Conference of
Chief Justices
and the judges of
the World. This
was probably the
idea: the
children linked
with law, the law
linked with
judges, the
judges linked
with society, the
society linked to
the whole world.
This is how he has
created this chain. And truly who could
have thought of all this? I had laughed at
Justice Desai when Justice Desai called
me. I said, 'What is going to happen? People
will come, eat, drink and be merry'. Justice
Desai told me: 'No brother, it will not be just
eat, drink and be merry.' No. There will be
deliberations. Each judge who represents a
country, be it African country, European
country or Asian country is concerned
about his child and therefore, he will be
concerned for the world, because today's
children are going to be tomorrow's world.
When I became the Chief Justice of
Uttaranchal and I had an invitation to attend
this Conference. I have an invitation now
and I want to see how these persons from
different cultures, different civilizations,
different political thoughts, different
backgrounds, different economic and
financial positions — how do they come
together and yet do not fight, yet live for
good long 5-6 days, deliberate with each
other and bring out something.
See, unless you churn the butter milk, the
butter does not come. There has to be a
churning process started. What happened
when the atomic power was invented. They
went on, they went on and on. It was a
churning of thoughts and ultimately they
found a tremendous atomic power. This is
the power that we are in search of, through
the children. We want an atomic power, our
atom is the child. And we want that power.
Mahatma Gandhi was also once a child,
Nelson Mandela was also once a child,
Lincoln was also once a child. Yet these
children when they developed they effected,
they impressed and they were relevant to
the whole world.
We will, therefore, have to take this idea
further. And then came the idea of
empowering the International Court of
Justice. You all are lawyers. You know
something was spoken about enforceability.
You all know, day in and day out that section
9 decree under Hindu Marriage Act can
never be executed'. Section 9, the restoration
of conjugal rights decree can never be
executed. I am yet to see a lawyer who has
not filed a suit under Section 9. All lawyers
do go after that. You forget about the legal
nuances and legal complications,
enforceability is not everything and all. The
whole idea of bringing these judges together
is to start a thought in the world, which
thought will translate via the International
Court of Justice. The International Court of
Justice will act as the vehicle, as the conduit
and the International Court of Justice would
be impressed by these thoughts and ideas
which are noble ideas.
Mr Gandhi spoke about the vetoing
countries, non-vetoing countries. Well, as
George Orwell said: All animals are equal,
some are more equal than others. Similarly,
all the 192 countries are equal, but the veto
countries are probably more equal. We have
to bring that equality together. We have to
distribute that equality in a most equitable
manner. But how are we going to do it. The
only way you can do it is through the law.
And again, let me tell you, merely because
there is no enforceability to the judgments,
that doesn't become less relevant.
We are in a country and we are in an era
when, brothers and sisters, don't forget
today every sixth person living in the world
is an Indian. If we
start thinking,
then one-sixth of
the world thinks
in this way. Let's
not be afraid of
our numbers. Our
number is our
strength. Let's
use our numbers
as the strength,
as this is how we
will be able to use
our tremendous
numbers as our
strength.
Much has been
spoken about pending litigation and this
and that. I am a very positive man. I look at
only the good side, the bright side and I see
the number of Indians in the world as the
strength of India. Again, the idea to catch
the children — very recently we have won
the 20-20 World Cup, a matter of great
pride. But what was the idea? The idea was
'catch them young'. Catch the young
persons, catch your Sreesanth who is 17
years, catch that Pathan who is 20 years
and so on and so forth. So, when we catch
them young, we will be able to make a strong
team. Whether it is hockey, whether it is
cricket, humanity also, catch them young.
If 32,000 children understand what the
humanity is, understand what the human
rights are, understand the importance of
peace and see their thoughts reverberate
in not one, not two, not three, but 100-200
chief justices and judges of the world. See,
we have created them as lifetime
ambassador for peace. The idea is also,
'What am I going to do alone'. It's such a
tremendous task. If I am not able to do, what
this one man Jagdish Gandhi, or one man
Gupta or one man Justice Qureshi or one
man can do? What are they going to do in
this world?
Rabindranath Tagore has written a beautiful
poem. I don't know how many of you are
Bengalis. I'll translate the poem. He said: Ke
loibe amaar kaaj, bollo sandha roobi
(Who will take my job, asked the setting
sun), Suniya saara jagat niruttar (When
this question was thrown to the world, the
Mr Justice I. Venkatanarayanan, Mr Justice A.S.
Qureshi & Mr Jagdish Gandhi attending the
Seminar on Empowering the Interntional Court of
Justice at New Delhi
whole world remained silent). Who can
answer, who will do the job of the sun.
Mateer tore deep chhilo (There was an
earthen lamp). The lamp said: “Whatever I
can do, I will be able to do”. See, that earthen
lamp answered the mighty sun, that well, 'I
may not be the sun, I may not be able to
light the whole world, but whatever I can
do, I will do. My dear brothers and sisters,
all of you have to be the lamps, that earthen
lamp. Don't think that you alone cannot
light the whole world. Think what you can
do. By coming here, you have proved that
you are those potential lamps. And if those
lamps, if those students who have come from
Afghanistan, who have come from Dhaka,
who have come from Mauritius and Fiji and
other far off countries, if they go back with
a lighted heart, then we have been able —
these wise persons sitting here, or those
wise persons who are going to come for
that conference — have lighted so many
lamps, who are prepared to think for the
world. This takes me to the issues. Much
has been said about the issues. When
would the question of enforceability come?
When the issues are such, in which there is
a conflict amongst two nations.
Then you know the present International
Court of Justice has, for example: it's not
Justice Sirpurkar Vs so and so, or Justice
Venkatanarayanan Vs Justice Qureshi. It
has to be India Vs so and so – some country.
Now if the issues are such which create a
conflict or have the potential to create a
conflict, then of course, the question of
enforceability will come because then there
will be I Vs You, He Vs She. It will not be I
and You. It will not be You and Him. I was
thinking that somebody will touch the issue
of the environment. Each of us, each country
is suffering from loss of ecology. Supreme
Court came out with the doctrine of trust in
that hotel matter. The Kyoto Protocol has
also been signed for the purchase of carbon
credits. Some countries are left to grow the
jungles, while others say that we will
industrialize ourselves and leave carbon in
this world, causing global warming. We are
told everyday that because of global
warming, the Arctic area is melting and soon
a day will come when the sea level at Chennai
or at Bombay will go up by about two
metres. I have seen the devastating results
that happen when the sea level goes up.
This was when I was the Chief Justice of
Calcutta High Court and Andaman Islands
came within the jurisdiction of Calcutta High
Court. So in order to give morale to my
officers who were serving in, say, Campbell
Bay or Carr Nicobar, I went up to Campbell
Bay. I am telling you the story of Campbell
Bay.
What has happened is, because of this
tsunami, one plate in the Indonesian-
Sumatra has come up. With the result, the
water level in Campbell Bay, Carr Nicobar
and Port Blair has also gone up. We had a
court in Campbell Bay. My junior division
clerk who has to go in the day of high tide,
has to wade through this deep water.
Brothers, till we are sitting in Delhi, in this
beautiful air-conditioned hall, we are not
going to realize what the people have gone
through. It's all right to see the TV, it's further
all right to see next day the papers along
with a very tasty cup of tea and then think
about as to what had happened. You have
Speech of Chief Guest
Hon. Mr Justice Sirpurkar,
Judge, Supreme Court
to go there personally. You have to see what
has actually happened.
Therefore, I thought that this environment
issue if it can be brought before the
International Court of Justice. What the
developed countries have been telling us,
'you grow the jungles so that the carbon
created by us can be assimilated and for that
purpose we will pay you. Kyoto Protocol is
only about the carbon and how much do we
pay you. You will require lot of space, you
will require lot of time, you will have to also
go without the industries, your children will
be in the jungles, for absorbing other
carbon. We will pay you, but how much that
pay will be, it will be chicken feed for an
elephant.
Time has come when we have to think of
these issues. Why can't somebody start an
action on the Kyoto Protocol itself, on the
question of environment itself, on the
question of industrialisation itself. These
are too deep subjects.
These can't be discussed like this. But we
will have to find out the issues in which there
will be no conflicts. A Kashmiri child is no
different from a Pakistani child and a
Pakistani child is no different from an
Indian child, and a Sri Lankan child — if
he is living in Jaffna or if he is living in
Colombo — a child is a child. We will have
to create the issues. We will have to create
the popular vote for the welfare of the child.
That will be the real empowerment of the
International Court. Create the proper
issues. You can't empower the court by
creating or bringing in the enforceability.
You have to create the issues which would
by themselves be important to all and
would actually effect all, but would not be
against anybody. That would be the real
empowerment in my very humble opinion.
All this is extremely difficult. It's not easy.
One person has started it, he is already
facing it. I'll end by a famous couplet in
Hindi. Probably here everybody would
understand Hindi or Urdu. "Kaun Kahta
Hai Ki Aasmaan Mein Chhed Nahi Ho
Sakta; Ek Patthar to Tabiyat Se Ucchhalo
(Who says a hole can't be made in the sky;
stomach disorders and several other
ailments.
To remain healthy, to perform my duties
to my satisfaction, I used allopathic
medicines to get relief from fatigue, frequent
bouts of cold and cough and stomach
disorders. However, I only got temporary
relief after using these and as soon as the
effect of medicine was over, I got the ailment
back.
Q1. What foods will help me to increase my
height?
Ans1. At your age, the bones are growing
rapidly. They require particular ingredients
to be built. Bone building foods are Sesame,
Cucumber, Anar and Almonds. Take these
only in compositions described earlier in our
I was then advised to give up all
medicines and adopt a new life style as per
orthomolecular science, which affects the
life of a man at cell (smallest) level through
food chemistry. This science showed to me
the importance of combining foods correctly.
I started taking foods as advised and
found remarkable improvement in my health
very soon. Orthomolecular Science advises
foods that are tasty and delicious and that
such foods are to be taken regularly.
I am grateful to Dr Amitabh Pandit
for his kind advice to me. He is doing a
great service to our institution by educating
our Principals, teachers and students to
adopt a healthy life style by taking healthy
food as a Health Educator to CMS.
Today, I truly know that food is the
medicine for today and tomorrow.
Q2. What should I do to stop my weight
from increasing?
Ans2. Undesirable weight gain is due to
various factors besides food quantity.
Avoid clogging and congesting foods like
Laiya, Chiwra and Maida. These reduce the
body metabolism and can result in weight
gain. Drinking a full glass of Carrot Juice,
(ALONE), in the morning will increase your
metabolism. Do not avoid EATING. EAT
CORRECT FOODS.
