Flexible, Manageable Study 

Foundation Degrees are studied ‘full-time’ for 2 years, involving 1-3 days a 

week at College, or part-time over 2-4 years, which means you can continue 

to work and earn whilst studying. Some involve examinations, but many 

focus on continuous assessment and coursework, which can include essays, 

presentations, case studies, portfolios, practicals, reports and research projects. 

Degree qualifications 

to suit you 

Foundation Degrees are 

suitable for anyone aged 18 

and over, whether you’re 

straight from College or 

Sixth Form or are a mature 

student. 

In general you need GCSE 

or equivalent in English and 

Maths and a suitable Level 3 

qualification such as: 

• AS/A2 Level 

• BTEC Extended Diploma 

• Advanced Diploma 

• NVQ/Diploma Level 3 

or equivalent 

However, you will be 

considered if you have the 

appropriate work experience 

or a strong desire to succeed. 

Easing you back into 

education 

An Access to HE Diploma will 

help you get onto a Foundation 

Degree programme or into 

university even if it has been a 

while since you were in 

education or you don’t have 

traditional qualifications. 

They will develop your 

knowledge, build your 

confidence, improve your 

learning techniques and 

develop your communication, 

numerical and IT skills. 

You will have an individual 

study plan tailored to your

Flexible, Manageable Study

Business Management 

Foundation Degree Courses 

Foundation Degrees in Business Management provide an academic 

business background to a wide range of business and administrative roles. 

Assignments require reflection on your experience in the workplace and 

you will usually need to be employed to join the course. 

Business 

Management (FdA) 

This course will develop 

your understanding of the 

inter-relationships of 

business with the 

environment in which it 

operates. It covers decision 

making in business, people 

management, marketing, 

management accounting, 

using and presenting 

information, operations 

management techniques and 

work related projects. 

Business & Accounting 


This Foundation Degree 

requires successful 

achievement of AAT Level 4 

and normally lasts for 1 year. 

It covers marketing, people 

management, operations 

management techniques and 

work related projects. 

Business & IT 


This management course 

places special emphasis on IT 

units such as Systems Analysis, 

Emerging Technologies and 

Information Systems Design. 


Teaching & Learning (part-me) 

These courses will help you to apply theory to practice and as 

assignments require reflection on your experience in the workplace you 

will usually need to be in relevant employment to join. 

Early Years (FdA) 

(January start) 

This Foundation Degree is 

aimed at Early Years 

Managers, Deputy Managers 

and experienced Early Years 

practitioners with a Level 3 

qualification in Early Years 

and 2 years’ post-qualifying 

experience. You will gain 

a deeper knowledge of how 

children learn and develop 

and explore values and 

beliefs associated with 

children and their families. 

Completing this Foundation 

Degree will allow you to 

progress on to a full 

Honours Degree, Early Years 

Professional Status and 

Qualified Teacher Status. 

Supporting Teaching & 

Learning (Teaching 

Assistants) (FdA) 


aimed at people with two 

years’ experience in 

supporting teaching and 

learning in schools. It covers 

behaviour management, 

policies and practice of 

education today and 

integrated and multi-agency 

working. Modules are also 

available in working with 

learners with diverse needs 

or using new technology. 

Completing this Foundation 

Degree will allow you to 

progress on to a full Honours 

Degree in Education at 

MMU, and subsequently 

lead to a full-time PGCE 

course which would give 

you Qualified Teacher Status, 

subject to you achieving the 

appropriate level.

Engineering 


Macclesfield College’s European Centre for Aerospace Training (ECAT) 

has over 50 years’ experience in providing quality training in aircraft 

maintenance engineering. It is approved by the UK’s Civil Aviation 

Authority to deliver and assess aircraft maintenance training to EASA 

IR-Part-147. 

Aircraft Maintenance 

Engineering (FdEng) 

This Foundation Degree 

covers topics such as 

aerodynamics and propulsion 

principles, aerospace 

legislation and aircraft 

maintenance & structures. 

It is underpinned by 

engineering mathematics, 

aerospace electrical science, 

aerospace mechanical science 

and project & design. 

The course also covers some 

of the theoretical knowledge 

of the EASA Part 66 

Certifying Staff Maintenance 

for A and B1 categories. 

BSc (Hons) Aircraft 

Maintenance (top-up) 

This one year course is 

suitable for students who 

have completed an 

Engineering Foundation 

Degree, HND or first 

degree, however a bridging 

course may be available for 

students from other 

disciplines. It covers aircraft 

materials and structural 

design, aircraft electrical 

and mechanical systems, 

airline operations 

management, finite element 

analysis and a project. 

One day per week is spent 

at MMU Manchester. 

With suitable industrial 

experience this qualification 

will allow you to gain 

Incorporated Engineer 

(IEng) status and a C licence, 

allowing you to supervise 

A and B1 licensed 

maintenance engineers. 

Electrical Engineering 

(FdEng) 

This Foundation Degree will 

help you develop the skills 

and knowledge required for 

a career in the industry. 

It covers digital and 

analogue electronics, ECAD 

and software engineering 

along with power and 

microprocessor systems. 

It also involves an industrial 

case study and an 

engineering project. 

Mechanical Engineering 

(FdEng) 


aimed at people working 

within mechanical 

engineering and covers 

mechanical science, 

engineering design, 

computer modelling and 

systems and involves 

industrial case studies and

Graphics & Digital 

Media (FdA) 


allow you to make an 

immediate creative, ethical 

and intelligent contribution 

to industry. You will study 

all aspects of graphic design 

including typography, design, 

drawing, illustration, 

animation and interactive 

and digital design. 

Residential study trips, 

work experience and 

creative enterprises will 

further develop your skills. 

You should ideally have 

both creative and design 

software experience, however 

bridging qualifications are 

available.

Events Management 

(FdA) 

This course will focus on 

the dynamic, diverse and
