ALLAN SARGINSON has a brand new
toy – a 1000cc Honda scooter. “I last had a
scooter 30 years ago, but the rising petrol
prices prompted me to go back on two
wheels,” says Allan. “In the six weeks I’ve
been riding it, it’s cost $14 in fuel, compared
to $30 for ½ a tank of petrol for my car. It’s
great to ride – goes like a rocket!”
2005 H2 SUT HUMMER
OWNER RUSSEL SHERWIN
Made in the US since 1991. Developed
from the Para military vehicles used
during operation Desert Storm. What’s
your favorite toy? I like all my toys. So
why do you have this one? I use it as a
work wagon. What’s the reaction from
your partner? She enjoys cars as well
and drives a 1930 model A. What is your
most favorite moment with your toy?
EVERY moment! It is like driving a 3.5
ton lounge suite… Worst moment? You
can’t print it... What is your dream toy?
TOY OKANAGAN 5TH WHEELER CARAVAN. OWNER - JP WINCKEL
What’s your favourite toy? Veni - …2nd would be the 5th wheeler. So why
do you do have it? The Okanagan..allows us the freedom to camp just
about anywhere. Being fully self contained..ie grey water & black water
containment means the authorities allows a greater flexibility for freedom
camping. What’s the reaction from your partner? Absolutely loves it. What’s
your most favourite moment? Being away from it all.. Worst moment In
the middle of the Gentle Annie.. highway (actually single lane dirt track)
between Taihape & Hastings and discovering a problem with Motorcycle
mounting. Veni had to drive the rig..all in 4 wd..her first time driving the unit
whilst I drove the bike to Waiouru. And noticing a sign on the way out that
said NO caravans or trailers. What’s your dream toy? Got it - Includes the
kitchen sink.
TOY - P51 D MUSTANG.
OWNER - GRAHAM BETHELL
What’s your favourite toy? P51 D Mustang (closely
followed by many other warbirds.......I also fly the
Catalina, Harvard, RV6, Hawker Hunter Jet.........and
a few others). So why do you do have it? It gives me
great pleasure to be able to preserve, fly and enjoy this
fabulous piece of aviation history. What’s the reaction
from your partner? My wife is fully supportive and very
enthusiastic. What’s you most favourite moment? When I
am taxiing back to the flight line after having successfully
displayed the P51 at an airshow. The crowd is happy,
and so am I. Worst moment? There are times when
following lengthy and complicated maintenance I receive
a massive account for engineering services. Owning
such an aeroplane is a huge financial commitment and
there are obviously times when I wonder if it is all worth
the effort. What’s your dream toy? The Mustang.
Fred Bain - PBY Catalina “Enough room for a
What’s your favorite toy? 5.4m sail on a small board with about 30
knots side onshore wind and some good sized surf to rip on and
jump off. Why do you do have it? It’s just such a rush. Windsurfing
can be so many things. From flying off the top of a wave on a
turquoise day or being the only one out in the heaving froth of a
cyclone sailing on the edge of control, to blasting up the harbour
on flat water at over 50kmh with the setting sun glistening gold on
the water. What’s the reaction from your partner? Her family got
me into this sport so she can relate to the call of the wind. What’s
your most favourite moment? So many. But when you land a big
OWNER - JOHN GREY
Favourite toy? My Buick. So why do you do have it? To enjoy
driving it on the Rod runs and to classic car shows. I have
always enjoyed American cars from the 1960s. What’s the
reaction from your partner? Annette has always loved the car
ever since we first drove it around in the States in 1999, so
she was pleased we got it to N.Z. What’s you most favourite
moment? Having it arrive in New Zealand in April 2006 after
persuading Annette’s brother to sell it to us on our last trip.
Worst moment? Having the ignition switch give out on the
way to Raglan for a Rod run day. The motor kept cutting out
because of the ignition switch, so I had to use Kiwi knowhow
and tape a screwdriver onto the switch and then to the
dashboard to keep the ignition on. What’s your dream toy?
The 1962 Buick Invicta convertible which is owned by Annette’s
TOY - POWERED PARACHUTE ZK-FET.
OWNER - MIKE CARTER
What’s your favorite toy? Powered Parachute. It is
basically a mix between a go cart and a parachute. So
why do you have it? It gives me serenity and excitement.
Things just look different up there…. at 1000ft there is a
freedom from EVERYTHING else. What’s the reaction
from your partner? Di used to have her own Pilot licence
so she shares my love for the skies. What is your most
favourite moment with your toy? It’s all good but one of
my best moments was combined with one of the worst…
It was one of those beautiful still days, no clouds. I was
flying out at Wairamarama, looking at the hills. I flew
around a friend’s house and waved and it was just great.
THEN my throttle fell off, so now I am mucking about with
wires etc trying to control my machine. In the end I had to
cut the engine out and brace myself for the hard landing to
come…
5.5meter, 2 ton, great white shark. The Tyrannosaurus
Rex of the sea. I surfed this! Rode it in.
Look Mum no hands, safer than my motorbike!
I was sitting on its belly and then
I felt the belly tighten, I looked
around and the shark lifted its tail
and WHACK onto the ground. I
felt the wind of it…
How Many Blokes Do Ya Know Have Surfed
a 5.5mtr 2 Ton Great White - NOAH?
…and Have The Photo To Prove It
Written by Mykeljon Winckel – Editor
Photos supplied by Dwayne Havord
You may recall seeing a news item in the NZ Herald in
November 2003 about an amazing fishing experience, but
following is the yarn behind the story!
“Mate it’s fair go! No cr** I surfed on the back of a 5.5 metre 2 ton
great white shark!” Dwayne Havord of Pukekawa thrusts a photo
in front of me… “Yeah don’t know what got into me, but jeez I’m
real glad I left me boxer shorts on, coz inside my thighs I had no
skin left, I was bleeding”. Three things popped into my mind right
at that point. “A really effective way to get a wax job; blood in the
water attracts sharks; Yeah Right,” and “what were you thinking!”
As interviewer my jaw was hanging so low
I could have scooped up earth. “I tell ya, it
really got the adrenalin pumpin’ to wrap yer
legs around that baby”.
“At first I thought what the f*** have we got here when all I saw
was this huge big dark shape coming up from the bottom. It was
so bloody big I thought it was the Orca that we saw a couple of
days earlier, but then an Orca could bust out of that in an instant.
The boat started to list really badly now and holy cr** the only
thing I had running through my head was the theme song of Jaws
and the scene where this huge Noah was chomping through the
stern of his boat… and I can’t tell you what I said next when its
head popped out of the water and I saw what it was as you couldn’t
print it! OH… MY… GAWD!!! I had never ever seen such a big
mother. It’s just as big as the boat! Is it dead? Alive? Half alive?
Dwayne and colleague Daniel Scott got up
early that morning in November to ‘group
captain’s’ weather (mint, for those non military
types) and went to clear their 3km long gillnet
in Scot’s 5.5 meter aluminium fishing dory.
The net was set for lemon fish in about 10m
of water approximately 2km north of Waiheke
Island. “With the net in the hauler we kinda
knew something was up when the boat began
to list heavily on the port side and started to
rock side to side and yet there wasn’t a wave to
be seen” said Dwayne. Now a few days before
the two had witnessed an Orca (killer whale)
popping its head up right next to the boat
with a 2.5-3 meter thresher shark hanging out
either side of its mouth.
12
It didn’t sink in what we had done until I saw the size of the teeth and mouth!
Or what… So we sat back for a while and not a word was said.
Daniel broke the silence and said ‘that’s one hell of a lot of sushi’
which broke the tension and snapped us back into reality.”
“On closer inspection we could see that the shark had got tail tied
on the bottom net rope and drowned. I had never heard of a fish
drowning though - that sounds weird if you ask me. We managed
to get the shark nearer to the side of the boat and we poked it.
Don’t think it felt anything coz there wasn’t any movement, so very
gingerly we cut the rope and tied it off on one of the stern bollards
and maneuvered the boat around the shark hoping it wouldn’t
wake up, really hoping… fingers crossed, now would not be a good
time to witness that Jaws scene! Cut the other side of the net and
tied that off and headed into a bay just south of Gannet Rock,
Waiheke Island – 2 knots was the best we could get out of the boat
but to go any faster we’d have to turn the shark around and there
was no way I was going to wrap a noose around that!
“It was on the way in we started yappin’ about big animals we’d
broken in, horses and some bull riding and we looked at each other
and said ‘c’mon how many people in the world could actually say
they have ridden a 5.5 meter, 2 ton great white shark!’ Can’t say I
was overly keen but what the hell - we had a camera and it’ll be
a good yarn. So off with jeans and T and in I go… Jeez my heart
was pumpin’ and I developed a God complex I think, coz I reckon
I could have walked on water if it moved! This is probably the
dumbest thing anyone could do and I was already committed, I was
sliding backwards in the whitewash of the boat hanging on to the
biggest fish I have ever seen… I was praying the engine would not
stop! Not now Mr Murphy, not now. After a few seconds I took
both my hands off, gripped tightly with my legs and yelled ‘take
the damn photo now! Then the bloody shark moved! Nah only
kidding… Daniel had a go and we kept heading in. My inner legs
were raw from the shark’s skin and I couldn’t put my pants back o,
which is why you see me with me daks half off in a couple of the
pics. No it wasn’t coz I got THAT scared,” Dwayne laughs.
“We beached the shark and the boat was still floating. This shark
is huge! We waited for the tide to go out and Daniel went over
to the nearest farm house to see if he could borrow a tractor or
something. I was sitting on its belly and then I felt the belly
tighten, I looked around and the shark lifted its tail and WHACK
onto the ground. I felt the wind of it… I ran as fast as I could with
my daks halfway around by my feet with the thought we rode it
and it was alive!’ I couldn’t believe it, but we got the photo… But
that was it, no more movement. Daniel got a 5 ton tractor and we
lifted the tail up just to make sure we’d retain all of our limbs, this
Noah has razor sharp teeth and a huge mouth. So all quiet and
we were talking for about an hour and sitting there on the shark.
I saw its belly jumping up and down. Noooooooo not a scene out
of Alien, surely not. I slit the shark open and 2 shark pups fell out
onto the beach immediately snapping at me and they were over a
meter in length each. I really felt sorry for this huge shark dying in
our net so I gingerly handled the pups and put them in the water
and they swum off. I later found out that shark pups don’t need
their mother around, actually they get the hell out as they may
become mother’s snack.”
After seeing the pics and hearing Dwayne telling his yarn it just made
me realize that I’d met a few sharks in my time but none with such a
fearsome reputation as the great white. All I can say is Dwayne and
Daniel - lucky she wasn’t messing with ya! Good yarn – For the record
great white sharks are now a protected species but were not at the time of
this amazing incident. ED
Looming up to the day of the event there were a few good days of
weather followed by rain, rain, rain. Even up until the night before it
was raining and blowing… I thought to myself, ‘Darn it, there goes a
great day of riding and one of the first charity rides for the upcoming
riding season’. I wasn’t alone in those thoughts I can tell you. Bikers
all round NZ would have been subdued at the concept. However,
come the morning it was nothing short of a ‘pearler’, one out of
the bag. I don’t know what Michelle and AJ did down there at Full
Throttle Motorcycles but whatever it was, the spell worked.
‘man cannot live on motorbike alone’. Sadly we men are
simple, weak, tortured wrecks controlled by hormones and
TOYS FOR THE BOYS
I got up early Sunday morning, which goes against the grain,
to begin my pre season pilgrimage, checking the tyre pressures,
oil, water, tools, tyre repair kit. Cleaning my helmet visor I
suddenly realized that I’d been cheated out of an hour because
of daylight saving. Dang, no morning coffee, I’ve got to get
my kit on, grab my camera and out the door, garage door
that is. So with best intention and the desire to complete the
first season initiation ceremony I found myself on my bike
daydreaming to the tune of the throbbing exhaust note, so
much so I almost forgot to stop at the meeting place - Full
What a brilliant turnout of riders, over 120 bikes. There are
all makes and models, colours, sizes and that’s the bikers I’m
referring to here! It’s just so great seeing everyone getting out
and enjoying their passion. First topic by most I talked to was
‘I thought it was going to rain’. I chatted with so many fellow
bikers it felt more like a reunion, it truly is one of the great
things about these sorts of events, the social aspect. It doesn’t
matter what your ride is so long as you’re doin’ it.
Michelle and AJ had totally oudone themselves on organizing
everything down to a ‘T’, actually it was coffee (right on), a
map and a briefing by AJ. A St Johns medic and a breakdown
truck was also present on the ride should it be necessary.
Unfortunately, one rider hit some unmarked road works and
ended up in a ditch with a broken collar bone and his pillion
rider nursed a few grazes and bruises. This brings me to a
point that the road conditions after this last winter in places are
just plain dangerous and safety is paramount. Bikers beware,
what happened to that rider could have happened to anyone of
us. AJ did bring this section of road to our attention at the pre
ride briefing.
EXCLUSIVE
AN UNPALATABLE TRUTH
The sun sets on the First New Zealanders
The new ‘revised’ history of New Zealand
Sunset over Mt Wellington,
Spring Equinox, September 2008
We’ve all seen the documentaries and visual imagery
is compelling. Whole new generations grow up with a
picture of this land as pristine and pure, uninhabited until
Polynesian footprints placed upon our shores. Before this
belief continues any longer, we owe it to ourselves, and
to the original ancestors of this land, to look at the facts.
There were people here before the Polynesian migrations.
They left behind multiple clues as outlined in the previous
two parts of this series. They also left behind their bones
– and these tell the most tragic tale of all. Far from pure and
peaceful, the land now known as New Zealand was an
unimaginable hell, awash in the blood of both the original
peoples and Maori. Formal burials tell us about the First
Peoples, but the bones of the ancient peoples can also be
found under layers of charcoal, in the old cooking pits.
Up until the 1970s, that early Maori were cannibals was
common knowledge, though its extent and the horrifying
effects on all the people of this country could not have
been imagined. New Zealand’s early history was openly
outlined in books available to schools. Suddenly, books
were withdrawn, a new ‘revised’ history appeared and the
original, pre-Maori inhabitants disappeared from public
view. This article allows them to speak again.
Maori have always spoken of a race of fair skinned people who
preceded them. They called them “Patu-paiarehe” or Turehu, and
some still trace a shared lineage. In 1867, a Ngati Whatua Tohunga
(historian) stated that the Ngati Whatua came to New Zealand
from the Cook Islands nine generations earlier, making landfall at
a place called Hatarau (Little Barrier Island). Arriving there they
encountered a race of fair haired people with fair skin and green blue
eyes, whom they named PAKEHA . They took the women to breed
from - the males as slaves and food.
There are Maori who speak of babies stolen long ago by a “fairy
people” who hid in the bush, only coming out at night – an
understandable action of people who were being killed and eaten
faster than they could breed. It is also highly possible that children
taken were born to their own women captured by Maori. In savage
post-Maori New Zealand, captives were eaten immediately, kept
for breeding or enslaved and subsequently killed for food – an
unpalatable history to inherit, but a fact, nonetheless.
These tall bones and small Turehu bones were found just
last month in a cooking pit.
One of the last surviving sub-tribes of the Patu-paiarehe was
called the Ngati Hotu, pockets of whom survived into colonial
times. Here’s a description of them from Maori oral history:
“Generally speaking, Ngati Hotu were of medium height and
of light colouring. In the majority of cases they had reddish
hair. They were referred to as urukehu. It is said that during the
early stages of their occupation of Taupo they did not practice
tattooing as later generations did, and were spoken of as te
whanau a Rangi (the children of heaven) because of their fair
skin. There were two distinct types. One had reddish skin, a
round face, small eyes and thick protruding eyebrows. The other
was the Turehu. They had white hair and blue green eyes. They
were fair-skinned, much smaller in stature, with larger and very
handsome features.” ( Refer: Tuwharetoa, Chpt.7, pg.115, by
rev. John Grace). Note: The cavern dwellings and stone walls of
these people can still be seen at Taupo, but are unprotected and
under threat from development.
The bones of the first New Zealanders have been found at
locations all over the country: A cache of bones was found in the
Kaipara District in 2005 when a pig hunter’s dog wandered into
a cave. Investigations were handed over to Noel Hilliam, retired
Curator of the Dargaville Maritime Museum, and his team of
This is a picture of Eden Mill in the Auckland suburb of
Onehunga, where, for over a decade, it was used to grind up
the skeletal remains of countless generations of Patu-paiarehe
into fertiliser. Maori of the time had no concerns about the fate
of these “Tangata Whenua” bones and openly stated to the
authorities, ‘Do as you wish [with these bones], for these are not
our people’.
but by their size and the skull shape alone, they were clearly not
Polynesian. Pre-European Maori had a distinct skull, including
a ‘rocker’ jaw, not found in Europeans.
Noel: “A number of years ago around one of the stone cairns
near the Waipoua forest, an archaeologist excavated down 2.3
metres, going through two different tephra layers. Carbon
datings proved there were people living in this country over
five thousand years ago. We have come across a number of
caves throughout New Zealand where these peoples were
laid to rest. We no longer register these sites, to protect them
from destruction, as anything pre-Maori is being buried or
destroyed, including their dwellings. In the Waipoua Forest
there are hundreds of stone walls, stone dwelling, stone fireplaces
and altars - and petroglyhs carved in the stone. A large one that
has fallen over had the design of an early ship carved on it.
“This country over the centuries has been visited by many
peoples from many different countries - some we know of are
the Greeks, Chinese, French, Portuguese and Spanish. The
Chinese have an early world map showing New Zealand on
it. In a museum in Naples there is a marble statue of ATLAS
with a globe on his shoulders, made by the Greeks and modified
by the Romans in 150 AD. The Greeks by this time had
established the world was round and a time frame round the
world of 360 units, which much later in time became latitudes
of degrees. The globe is of the heavenly night sky over Athens at
that time showing the Tropic of Cancer, the equator, the Tropic
of Capricorn, the Antarctic Circle – and New Zealand. The
Polynesian Maori are at least the fourth lot of people to come
here.”
18
researchers. The skeletons showed that there were, at least, three
distinct physical types of pre-Maori interned there, ranging from
the very tall people (around 7 to 8 feet in height - 2.4 metres), to
people of normal stature, to the very small pygmy people.
Noel: “The small stature ‘Turehu” were a particularly attractive
childlike people with very fine features. We know about them
because these small people once populated countries like Ireland
and traditional stories relate their occupation of the Pacific range
from Tahiti to New Caledonia to New Zealand. A specialist who
examined some of the skeletons in the cave likened them to a race
of people living in Wales 3000 years ago.”
The obvious question is: Why has this discovery, which changes
our commonly accepted history, not been made public? It has – an
article in the Northern Advocate reported the discovery, including
a comment from an Auckland archaeologist, dismissing the
antiquity of the bones, which he never viewed. Noel was unable
to access facilities to undertake forensic examination of the bones,
The Dargaville burial find is far from unique, just more recent.
Eden Mill in the Auckland suburb of Onehunga was built
in 1843 to grind grain. (see photo) For over a decade in the
1860s it was used to grind up the skeletal remains of countless
generations of Patu-paiarehe into fertiliser. Many tens of
thousands of skeletons were removed from Auckland burial
caves for this purpose and sold to the mill. Maori of the time
had no concerns about the fate of these “Tangata Whenua”
bones and openly stated to the authorities, ‘Do as you wish [with
these bones], for these are not our people’.
with each trussed skeleton, a burial method similar to ancient
burials in Costa Rica, where round stone balls accompanied
the deceased into the afterlife. One such burial was found
on Pigeon Mountain near Howick with a pumice ball found
with the deceased.
Some bodies found in caves around the Raglan region were
encased in Kauri gum, while in both Raglan and the Waima
Range there are dry mummified remains in caves. Another
ancient custom practiced by the pre-Maori people was
to take the bodies to an open air location where the body
tissues could eaten by carrion birds, like the black-backed
seagull. The remains would stay there for a year or so in the
elements until the relatives returned to gather the bones and
stack them neatly into a bundle. These would then be carried
to and deposited in a burial cave or rock fissure. Others were
placed on a carved wooden tray held by a menacing looking
statuette figure the purpose of which was scare anyone who
wanted to come and disturb the remains. Several of these
were located in the Waima Range around Waimamaku,
Hokianga District.
Some burials were in stone hewn coffins, such as a number
observed in different locations around the Wanganui River
region. (see photo Turehu coffins)
Turehu coffins. These skeletons have recognisable European
physiology. They were already very old when found in rugged
country, far from any European churchyard and with stone hewn
coffins.
A blowup of the picture positively shows a side view of a
jaw (mandible) which is not Maori, but European. Maori
predominantly have a “rocker jaw” with a continuous downwards
curve on the lower border. Further to that, the eye sockets of
these people are squarish, the nose openings pyramidal, the
faces long and narrow (dolicephalic skull type) and the craniums
very round with a high vault.
Ancient burial methods
One 19th century report from the fiord area of the South Island
spoke of humans remains in a limestone cave that were so old that
a stalactite had partially encased the petrified remains.
Skeletons of the ancient people have been observed, frequently,
since the earliest colonial time, in burial caves or in a sitting
(trussed position) in sand dunes, with artefacts beside them.
The trussed burial is a typical type of pre-Maori burial. Around
Kekerengu in the Kaikoura area of the South Island a large
number of these have been found, reportedly with a moa egg
Those found in burial caves often had red hair or other light
brown and blond hues. Samples of their braided hair, taken
from the Waitakere rock shelters, used to be on display at
Auckland War Memorial Museum and were the subject
of written commentary by Maori anthropologist, Sir Peter
Buck. Our earliest maritime explorers frequently saw the,
red headed, freckle-faced Maori or “waka blondes” and large
pockets of them survived well into the 20th century as people
who had never mixed their blood with colonial era European
settlers. These days, when ancient, pre-colonial European
Caucasoid skeletons are located, they are handed over to the
local iwi and no scientific investigation is permitted.
An example of this happened in1995 on a Manutahi farm
in Taranaki. The remains of 12 skeletons in a formal pre-
European burial ground were unearthed by contractors
doing earthworks. The bones were removed and reinterred,
reluctantly, at Manutahi Marae where elders said they should
have been left where they were. Michael Taylor, a private
archaeologist from Wanganui, was called in by the NZ
Historic Places Trust to assess the discovery. He said the
burial site “definitely pre-dates European settlement due to
the style of burial, state of the bones and the presence of what
may have been woven flax. Something like this is a significant
discovery because it is an unrecorded formal burial site. I’ve
been in archaeology for over 20 years and this is the first time
I have seen anything like this.”
Since the find, more evidence has filtered through. This tells
us that the bones of each skeleton unearthed were in woven
bags, but the material was not flax; The burial site was a
formally organised location, totally unknown to the local
iwi by their own admission. It’s evident that they had no
history of burials at this location and in this unique manner;
The final burial had occurred in swamp or bog land and
was similar to the bog burials of Britain. No photography or
forensic analysis of the well preserved skeletal remains and
accompanying materials to determine their age, ethnicity or
physical anthropology was permitted.
Ancient people
lived and died
nearby
South of Port Waikato stretches rugged
limestone country – an area full of caves and
the last refuge of a peaceful people who were
hunted, and literally, eaten to death. These
early New Zealanders were not warlike. They
were “easy meat” for the cannibals who came
to New Zealand in successive Polynesian
migrations, and driven into hiding from their
homes along the coast and in the Waikato.
During the 1800s, the Rev Robert Maunsell
compiled a vast dossier of information on
a tribe of “Tall Ones” who had lived in the
area, but it was destroyed when the old Port
Waikato mission station burnt down. Much
of his information was gathered by word of
mouth from old Maori living in the area at the
time but more striking evidence was gathered
by the Reverend himself on several trips into
burial caves, where there were skeletons of
people over 2 metres tall. Among them, he
The
This is one of the skulls in the cache
of skeletons featured on the recent
The back of the skull, similar to others
clear evidence of cannibalism. The
back of the skull has been smashed
off to extract the brain. Caucasoid
European bones were at this site, now
buried.
Editor’s note
Over the last three editions (Sep, Oct and Nov) all of us here at eLocal
have been living with the dead. So much information has been presented
to us to sift through to try and make sense of it all. I would like to
thank you all for your contributions for in the quest of the truth there
is little recognition. It’s a lifelong challenge as history is written only
by the victorious. We have kept many of our sources anonymous for as
democratic a nation as we are there are organizations/people who want this
information to remain forgotten.
In living with our dead for this past period many emotions have been
tossed around, none more than the realization that there are ancestors of
our land and their very existence is being hushed up. We are a nation in
denial bound and gagged by political correctness. Cannibalism was rife
in NZ pre European history. Professor Paul Moon examines this in great
detail in his recent book ‘This Horrid Practice’ I refer to page 235 ‘… the
lasting impression of Maori cannibalism is that it was a normal part of
community life. But exact numbers, or even reliable estimates of victims,
and the percentage of communities’ inhabitants that gorged on human
flesh, will never be known.’
In the same period that NZ was being colonized and cannibalism being
common place in Maori society, the French where guillotining as fast
as they could! The Americas were engaged in slavery, the English were
still publically ‘hanging, drawing behind a horse and quartering (cut into
4). Don’t forget earlier in history the Spanish inquisition and even more
recently who can forget the acts of genocide by the millions. The point
is apart from the obvious that humans are destined to destroy each other,
the history of these events has been acknowledged, nations have had
to deal with it, accept it and move on. As hard as it is for our nation to
‘swallow’ cannibalism and the existence of pre Maori civilizations, should
censorship by political correctness change what was? I say NO. Should
we as a nation be ashamed of our past? I say NO. Are there implications
to our current internal race relations because of an ancestral pre-existence
prior to the Maori? What does this mean in our current climate of treaty
claims? These are all questions that come to the lips of all New Zealanders
no matter what ancestral bloodline. However, there are some that walk
among us today who carry the pain of our true uncensored heritage. Let
our history be known without political bias. The truth is out there.
reported there were several pieces of pottery. Maori
did not make pottery.
Twelve years ago these Tall Ones “spoke from
the dust” again during earthworks at Waikaretu.
Contractors discovered a cave set into a limestone
bluff. Inside were skeletons in stone crypts. By the
length of the femurs, the bodies were 7-8ft tall (over
2 metres). Anthropologists from Auckland and
Waikato universities were called in, then followed
a complete shutdown of the site, with a 75 year
moratorium placed upon it. Maurice Tyson of
Tuakau, a contractor in the area for 50 years, recalls
how this upset the men who had discovered the cave
and who could not understand why such a valuable
archaeological site should be kept secret. Maurice
also speaks of seeing a stone village with walls near
the mouth of the Waikaretu Stream. Stone from
the village was crushed to use for road metal and
nothing now remains.
In Franklin a young Maori man with strikingly blue
eyes walks, unaware. Above him, embedded in
the clay bank, lie tiny human bones - tangled with
small fragments of crayfish shell and charcoal. A
larger, digit bone lies with it in the partly exposed
cooking pit. Are these pathetic remains Maori or
pre-Maori European? As more and more bones
surface, they are asking us to listen to their
stories, to use the scientific testing now available
to prove that long ago, other peoples walked this
land. As a nation we need to acknowledge their
existence, accept the horrors of New Zealand’s
cannibal history which decimated pre-Maori and
Maori alike - and so move on.
Steel
Frames
of the Future
Today
The Zog brand of steel frames from Golden Homes is gaining market share.
Homes built to last use steel framing technology
With the ongoing saga surrounding leaky
homes, today’s home owners are more
concerned than ever about how their homes
have been built.
We all want the same thing – peace of mind
that our home, usually our biggest asset, will last
the test of time.
Our New Zealand love affair with radiata pine may be about
to cool after all the problems with leaky homes. New emphasis
on the specification of components like frames and trusses,
dwindling timber supplies, rising housing costs and the lobbying
for alternative building materials based on health and safety
issues have led to the rise in steel frame homes.
Steel framing has been around for years and is quickly
gaining market share in Australia, USA, UK, South Africa and
the Middle East.
Steel frame houses are strong, quick to build, won’t warp or
twist in the sun or absorb the winter rains and are often
cheaper. Because the frames are dimensionally stable, they are
less likely to leak as a result of movement, and if they do, they
won’t rot.
The high strength of steel framing enables large spans for
wide open living spaces. Steel is also fully recyclable again and
again making steel frames a sustainable choice. Peace of mind is
provided by the 50 year durability statement which is available
from New Zealand Steel. As steel is dimensionally stable it has
an aesthetic and time benefit as well. As steel is unable to
absorb moisture you won’t see cracks appearing in interior
linings and there won’t be delays to cladding and lining during
the building process caused by too high moisture content in the
framing.
Chris Kay, marketing manager at New Zealand Steel, points
out that New Zealanders are ingrained with a timber mentality
but building with steel framing isn’t a new thing.
“For homeowners, the case for steel framing is compelling - it’s a
“no brainer”, says Chris Kay. “Now builders are seeing industry
leaders such as Golden Homes investing in steel framing
technology, they are starting to show significant interest.”
New Zealand Steel is launching a new brand of galvanised
steel in early 2009 called Axxis TM Steel for Framing.
"My vision is for every home builder to confidently deliver steel
framed homes and for designers and homeowners to choose their
preferred framing as routinely as they do claddings and roofing
materials," says Chris.
There are also health benefits to steel framing – it doesn’t leach
hazardous preservative chemicals and is an inert material
which means that it doesn’t emit toxic chemicals. Steel framing
will not act as a food source for mould and in the unfortunate
event of moisture ingress into the wall it will not rot.
The Axxis TM brand has been accepted into the Asthma and
Respiratory Foundation of New Zealand’s Sensitive Choice
programme after assessment by a product advisory panel of
independent experts, who recognised the potential benefits to
asthma and allergy sufferers. Look out for its butterfly logo
which identifies companies taking active steps to help sufferers.
Golden Homes has invested in its own roll forming machines
to produce steel framing - "Zog" is its brand of steel frames,
which are manufactured from Axxis TM steel. A Zog system
cannot burn and is electrically safe, largely reducing the
flammable materials in your home. It is compatible with all
interior floor, wall and ceiling lining materials. Zog steel frames
are also 100% termite, rodent, borer and dry-rot proof.
Golden Homes customers can now choose between steel or
timber framing and with all the benefits of steel and the current
lower price of a steel framed option, it will be interesting to see
just how many new builds over the next decade use steel
frames instead of timber.
A real good Kiwi bloke
“Chubby” Wynyard
A “beautiful, beautiful” life
Bruce “Chubby” Wynyard is a real Kiwi bloke, packing a
heck of a lot into his 66 years. He has lead an extraordinary
life as a farmer, world class shearer, horse wrangler,
decorated soldier, hunter, fisherman, rugby player and
coach, contractor for local growers, mischievous joker and
proud dad of five sons – and despite some rough times
that have taken a toll on his health, he’s still out there in the
bush with his gun and his pig dog.
Chubby went on his first pig hunt as a four year old, riding horses
with his cousin to bring out the pigs shot on hunting trips at
Waikaretu.
“We went out to Split Rock for crayfish, mussels, paua and kina
– fish when the tide was right. Then we would get a pig on the way
home, so we took extra horses to carry all the kai.”
By the age of eight, Chubby was milking the cows on the family
farm at Naike, often in sole charge when his parents were away. “I
used to have a place on the floor at primary school to have a sleep, I
was so tired from the early starts.”
By 12 Chubby was off into the bush on his own hunting pigs. As
a youngster he took lessons by correspondence until getting his
school leaving certificate at 14. Not getting to high school was a
combination of the distance involved and his father’s reluctance
to send his only son away to board – Chubby was his number one
worker on the farm. The young Wynyard earned quite a reputation
as a shearer, hitting the headlines at the age of 19 when he set a
world record by shearing 626 Romney Cheviot cross lambs in 8
hours 47 minutes, a record that stood for 17 years.
Chubby was a horseman all his life, collecting wild horses and
buying others from Matira and Waingaro to drove to the horse
fairs at Pukekohe. He broke the wild ones in to fetch a higher price
– draught horses, horses for riding and ploughing. As a youngster,
he competed at A & P shows in hunting and show jumping – with
a sack or sheepskin as a saddle. “Imagine competing at Pakuranga
with all the flash people, and a sheepskin slapped on the back!”
Chubby laughs.
At 22, Chubby was in the army and training at Waiouru. “It was
like a holiday camp, compared to what I had been doing, shearing
and pig hunting,” he recalls. He volunteered for Malaya in late
1964 and was posted with the First RNZIR to Terendak Military
Camp at Malacca.
“Malaya was a good ‘initiation’ – I saw enough before posting to
Borneo/Sumatra with the 27th Commonwealth Brigade, under
the Brits. We spent six months in the jungle and six months out.
It was shockingly hot in Malaya. We did beach patrols watching
for insurgents coming in by boat at night from Indonesia. In
Borneo A company was deployed at Lubok Antu. It was all
jungle. We were taken for nine hours by longboat to our base
camp, 4000 yards from the Indonesian border.
“Our company was probably the luckiest who went on to fight
in Vietnam – we had been through fire fights, had picked up the
dead and the wounded, taken POWs. In Vietnam, there was a
guy there just celebrating his 18th birthday. He’d never heard a
shot fired before – that’s a tough initiation. The New Zealand
army was so ill-prepared with no backup artillery. So after our last
return from Borneo, 98 of us came back to New Zealand to do a
crash course on guns and to replace the boys in Vietnam. By the
TET offensive, there was a team of guys there who had already
been through initiation by fire.”
Chubby has been passionate about rugby all his life but the game
got in the way of him taking his Master Gunner exam when his
CO ordered him to turn out instead to play for Waiouru against
the army school, who usually won matches. “So two officers later
asked me the questions orally and I had no trouble answering
them – it was a good thing, because I don’t think I could have sat
down and written out answers to questions.”
In 1968 Chubby was awarded the Queen’s Commendation for
Brave Conduct for risking his own life by throwing sandbags
on burning ammunition and preventing a major explosion and
serious loss of life at the RNZ Artillery 161 Battery position at
Nui Dat, Vietnam.
Soldiers returning from Vietnam had to face anti-war
protestors at their home-coming parade in Queen Street,
including a young Helen Clark. The years of being ignored
while struggling with ill-health caused by exposure to Agent
Orange took a heavy toll on the veterans over the years. “I had
a lot of resentment and anger at how we were treated, how
everything that had happened was ignored. Everybody was anti
the war, but we wanted New Zealand to think about what we
had experienced, about our mates who didn’t come back. We
were sent there to do a job and were all totally committed. It
caused a lot of psychological problems among vets to not be
acknowledged by the government during the 40 plus years after
the war. I found that after receiving the apology from Helen
Clark as prime minister and looking her directly in the eye, all
the anger disappeared, and other vets I’ve spoken to were of the
same opinion.”
After he left the army, this typical Kiwi bloke was chosen to
represent those who fought in Vietnam and to take the salute at
a full army parade at Papakura Military Camp, led by the SAS
and filmed for television. He turned up at the barracks in his
Landrover with his pigdogs in the back, wearing shorts and a
bush singlet. “I went to get a uniform to wear, when I was told
to get my dogs out of it and make myself scarce – there was an
important parade about to start. I said ‘it won’t be much of a
parade then.’ Then they clicked that I was Lance Bombardier
Bruce Wynyard – it was my parade. The SAS saluting me was
the highlight of my military career – I responded by giving an
American salute.”
With army life behind him, Chubby married and settled down
to raise a family. He was deeply involved with rugby, coaching at
representative regional level for Waikato and for young players.
Four of his sons wore the Waikato jersey. Shearing was no
longer an option for a family man, so Chubby turned his hand
to market gardening at Pukekohe. He rose from an 80 cents an
hour job to yard foreman at King Cole, moving onto work for
Jim Bull, where he extended the potato packing system to suit
other crops. Fork lifts and trucks followed and Chubby was in
the contracting business.
“It was an absolute pleasure working with the growers – I had a
great time.”
Today Chubby plays down the wounds he received in action,
as he faces losing a cancerous kidney, the result of exposure to
Agent Orange. He is sometimes forced to use a wheelchair, but
still keeps up pig hunting on the Raglan farm he broke in himself,
by getting tracks bulldozed for he and his cousin Kate to get in
and out on quad bikes. The biggest pig he ever bagged was at Port
Waikato in 1969 - a 310lb boar.
“It’s beautiful out on my farm – the property backs onto 18,000
acres of bush for hunting, there’s brown trout in the streams, a 3 ½
km beach front on the top of Raglan Harbour and whitebaiting on
both sides.”
He acknowledges that he has had a hard life, but says “you just
take it as it comes, have a go at everything and aim to achieve.”
His mischievous sense of humour is always there, ready to ‘have
people on,’ and not many days go by that someone isn’t calling by
and asking after him.
“I’ve had a beautiful, beautiful life – nobody could have had a fuller
life and if I could, I’d do it all over again.”
Steel Framing: Facts V’s Myths
Buying a house has always been an important & considered
decision, typically being a family’s largest investment. Knowing
that strong, reliable products have been, or are to be used in its
construction provides buyers with confidence in their purchasing
or building decision. With the aftermath of the “Leaky Homes
Syndrome”, clients are increasingly interested in the specification
of components such as frames and trusses.
The use of Steel framing continues to increase in many overseas
countries and in particular, Australia, which has solid & increasing
growth rates of Steel framed residential homes.
Steel framing in residential construction is by no means a new
concept. It is widely accepted that Steel frames are high strength,
termite, rodent, borer & dry-rot proof. They are also dimensionally
stable and will not twist, shrink, warp, split or rot.
As a country with a long history and natural wealth of wood
products for residential construction, steel framing has lived in
the shadow of timber framing until more recent times. With the
advent of dwindling timber supplies, escalating costs and
increased lobbying for alternative construction materials based on
health & safety issues – ZOG® Steel framing is now clearly the
choice for the future.
Golden Homes® & NZ Building Supplies LTD, NZ owned and
operated companies, have invested 3 years in Research and
Development for the use of ZOG® Steel framing in New
Zealand prior to offering the product to the market. This
commitment has required a substantial investment, including the
establishment of manufacturing plants throughout NZ. The
benefits of this investment are passed directly to our clients by
way of reduced manufacturing costs, as we manufacture the
ZOG® Steel frames & trusses and eliminate any potential third
party margins.
Some companies have in the past attempted to utilise Steel
framing without a well resourced Research and Development
programme and have not necessarily been successful in its
implementation to the market on a long term basis. Other
companies do not have access to, or have little knowledge of the
product. Due to their failure, their limited knowledge or the fact
they only offer Timber framing, these groups are invariably
negative about Steel framing as they see it as a very real threat to
their businesses. Golden Homes® and NZ Building Supplies Ltd
have a long, proud and enviable record of supplying timber
framed homes to the NZ residential market but by looking
forward and removing any emotional reaction to change from the
arguments, it is clear that ZOG® Steel framing really is the
product of choice for both today & the future.
some of the facts.
Galvanised and Zincalcume® Coated Steel has been used in the
building industry as a structural, roofing and cladding product for
many years, providing a history of dependable corrosion protection
in a wide range of environments.
New Zealand Steel provides a 50 year warranty for its Galvanised
Steel when used in ZOG® Steel house frames. In addition, Steel
framing is the only framing material for which any kind of
Structural Durability warranty is offered.
This Warranty includes Sea Spray and all Thermal Zones where
the steel is protected from the external environment by cladding
on both sides and where appropriate, installation of a Thermal
Break. ZOG Steel utilises an extruded polystyrene sheet
( ESI® Sheet) as the appropriate Thermal Break.
The key point to note is the framing is completely enclosed by
the internal wall linings and the exterior cladding. The roof
trusses are enclosed by the ceiling and the external roof cladding.
Healthy Homes
Increasing concern is being raised over timber preservatives
which have varying levels of toxicity, making it vital to take
suitable Health and Safety precautions when handling and
working with freshly treated timber and there are increasing
concerns over the dumping of toxic waste.
With ZOG® Steel frames and trusses, the builder does not need
to handle chemically treated products. To the homeowner,
ZOG® steel has a low allergenic nature providing an immediate
environment that is as free from chemicals as possible. Treated
timber as a construction product also raises issues of “offgassing”
and the harm that this can cause under internal environment
quality (IEQ) standards.
ZOG® Steel frames are also 100% recyclable.
Fire Resistance
ZOG® Steel frames do not ignite, propagate or add fuel to a fire.
Golden Homes® & NZ Building Supplies Ltd utilises premium
Ultraline® on ceilings and walls throughout their houses as
standard specification. Ultraline® has the similar fire resistance
characteristics as Fyreline®. Substituting combustible framing
and using non or low combustible materials, such as Ultraline®
will assist to reduce the consequences of uncontrolled fire.
Remember, ZOG® Steel frames will not ignite and
do not burn. When Fire resistance is a critical consideration in
construction, ZOG® Steel framing provides a great solution.
Expansion/Contraction
With the use of ESI® sheet, ZOG® Steel framing expansion
and contraction rates are negligible due to minimal direct heat
transfer to the frame even in hot weather. Furthermore ZOG®
Steel framing possesses a compatible expansion coefficient with
that of Ultraline® plasterboard, thereby minimising the
incidence of cracking.
Condensation
The most simply realised measurement of humidity (amount of
water vapour in the air) is the temperature at which water
vapour first condenses. This temperature is known as the
“Dew-Point”. The engineered ZOG® Steel frame system has a
ESI® sheet Thermal Break and hence remains above Dewpoint
Timber does not require a Thermal Break and may fall
below Dew-Point. Without a Thermal Break, Timber frames
will condensate in higher temperatures than ZOG® Steel
frames.
Any moisture on Timber can start deterioration which can
continue even after it dries. When any moisture on Steel dries,
the Steel il not rust.
Durability Comparison between
ZOG® Steel and Timber
ZOG® Steel frames & trusses are coated to protect them from
rusting which is a “surface” condition. Timber needs a full thickness
treatment to prevent deterioration.
Cut edges of ZOG® Steel do not need additional treatment due to
sacrificial properties of the coating. Any cut ends of treated timber
should have additional treatment as chemicals used in factory
treatment generally do not penetrate the full thickness of the
timber.
ZOG® Steel frames & trusses will not absorb moisture.
Timber will absorb moisture and can subsequently initiate deterioration.
Deterioration may occur in visibly dry timber. In ZOG®
Steel frames & trusses, any leaks can be fixed. Once the location
dries there is no deterioration.
In timber deterioration can continue once the leak is fixed and the
location has dried.
Construction
During periods of wet weather or during winter months the
moisture level in Timber frames can become too high and
internal wall lining can not be commenced until the moisture
levels drop sufficiently. ZOG® Steel frames do not suffer from
this inconvenience so construction times are often significantly
reduced.
As ZOG® Steel frames are so dimensionally straight, trades
people find there is no need for packing to compensate for
non-linear dimensions as is often the case with Timber
framing. Internal lining tradespeople prefer ZOG® Steel
framing because of its straightness and accuracy. Specialist
subcontractors can install bathrooms and kitchens more easily
and at a lower cost for the same reasons. The dimensionally
stable properties of ZOG® Steel framing assists in providing a
very high standard of internal finish that will last, as ZOG®
Steel framing will not warp, twist, or shrink after installation.
Electrical Safety
ZOG® Steel Frames are electrically safe because the frames are
earthed. When exposed to a live wire, they will create a short
and trip the residual current safety device, however, a broken or
pierced wire in a Timber frame can remain live and current
leakage can cause troublesome faults, fire risks and personal
injury.
Guys and guns in Mongolia
The hunting trip of a lifetime
Every hunter remembers that special hunting trip – the location,
the conditions, the quarry and most important of all, the mates
beside him. For Dave Compston, his hunt of a lifetime took
place in Outer Mongolia with three other hunters from Franklin,
tracking wapiti in the snow.
Terry Short from Waiuku, ‘Mirt’ Morrison, Lester Fitzpatrick
and Dave from Pukekohe were part of a group of nine hunters
on the intrepid hunting journey, in October 2002. Dave took the
opportunity to see the sights of China, including the terracotta
army and the Great Wall of China, before flying to Ulaanbaatar,
Mongolia’s capital. The city was founded in 1639 as a Buddhist
monastery. Of the 2.5million people in Mongolia, one million live
in the capital.
Dave: “My first impression of Ulaanbaatar was that it was like
America looked in the 1920s and 30s, not touristy at all. There
were big wide roads and no sign of any wealth at all, just big
old concrete Russian buildings. We spent two days there before
heading north-west to near the Russian border. It was a three
hour flight over the Gobi Desert – no roads, then a 12 hour cross
country jeep ride over very, very rough terrain of barren tussock
and beech forest. Every now and then we came across a ger, the
homes where Mongolians live. These are very warm, and they
have to be – it can be minus 30 degrees there. They are lined with
mohair with canvas pulled over and a fire in the middle and can be
put up and pulled down, ready to travel in an hour.
“The route was so rough, we nearly rolled a couple of times and got
stuck late at night, in the pitch black. The Mongolians couldn’t
get the jeep put, and in the end, we did it for them. We were
pleased to get to the hunting area in a beech forest, 30km from
the Russian border – we could see it through our binoculars.
Another group, including a friend from New Caledonia went to
9,000ft to hunt Ibec. Unfortunately, my friend fell off the horse
and broke his hip, ending his hunting trip in hospital.
“Our first night where we camped it snowed and the river froze
over. We woke at 4am when the generator came on and a lady
came and cooked our breakfast – I don’t know what I was eating
– it was some kind of stew. We had taken our own guns, which
made it tricky getting into China- there was a lot of paper work.
I’ve been a hunter for 30 years and I was after a trophy head
– we all were.
“There weren’t a lot of wapiti around but when we spotted one,
it was easy to hunt. We would follow it, then it would stop
running and we would catch up. Terry and I were lucky and got
heads.”
Dave says spending time with their Mongolian “minders” was a
memorable experience – there were 23 people altogether there to
look after the hunting party.
“We hunted together for three days and couldn’t speak the same
language, communicating through sign language. We shared
drink bottles and sweets and got on well. The Mongolians are a
very, very nice, hospitable people.”
Dave says that with the average income at $1 a day, hosting
hunting parties was a very important part of the local economy,
although Americans were not very popular.
“Our guides were surprised that we expected to walk to the hunting
grounds, apparently Americans expect to be driven. One American
was so fat he couldn’t walk anywhere and wanted the Mongolians to
find and drove animals past him so he could shoot them. But they
couldn’t find any, so he bought a camel from a local farm and shot
that, to take the head back as a trophy.”
At the end of the hunt, the group had a couple of extra days back
in Ulaanbaatar, waiting for the plane which was grounded by
sandstorms over the Gobi desert. “There were kids galloping up
and down the street, with a pack of dogs behind, while the adults
rode around on Russian motorbikes. Our guide told us not to go
anywhere on our own and to sleep with our guns under our beds. A
gun would be like a fortune to people who had so little,” says Dave.
EXCLUSIVE
Queen Manarangi Tutai Ariki of
Aitutaki, Cook Islands
INTERVIEW
Elocal talks to Queen Manarangi Tutai Ariki of Aitutaki, Cook Islands,
giving a rare insight into a modern leader who does not dodge political
bullets.
The people of the Cook Islands are closely related to New Zealand
Maori, with similar traditions, language, culture and customs. It is a
refreshing reminder that elders have immense value in our origins that
have sadly been lost.
As Queen of Aitutaki, how was the title bestowed on you?
The title runs in the family. It goes way, way back before the arrival
of Christianity in the country when our forefathers were chiefs and
were respected as chiefs. When it’s bestowed on you, you have it for
life. The only way I could lose the title is if I commit murder.
Who held the title before you?
Before me, it was my cousin – he’s in New Zealand now. The title
was bestowed on him some years ago and he wanted to go to New
Zealand to earn some money to build a house. My father and my
uncle agreed to his request and gave him three years to go to New
Zealand. But when he went to New Zealand, he never came back
for 20 years. In those years, the family elected my father to represent
the title in the council and be keeper of the title while my cousin
was away. When my father got very old, it was given to me to look
after so I was caretaker for six years, before I was invested. The
Government changed the rules, to say that to sit in the House of
Ariki, you had to be legally invested. My father offered the title to
my brother first, but my brother wanted to go to Australia. I never
thought I would be invested with the title, because my father told
me that when my cousin came back, it would go back to him. But
when he didn’t come back and he was told the title was not a NZ
title, only in Aitutaki, the Kopu Ariki (Ariki Family) took the title
off him and voted to bestow it to me.
I really didn’t want to become queen and I wouldn’t want my
children to take over the title because it’s hard. There’s no money
comes with it and I have to spend a lot – making donations every
time there’s an invitation. I would be ashamed to put just $10 or
$20 in. It takes a lot of my time – I have to juggle my time with my
business and my husband Des is by himself a lot while I’m away
at meetings. I’m very grateful to my mother-in-law because she’s
helped me, and Des is very supportive.
What is the House of Ariki?
Ariki means High Chief. All the islands were under their rule before
the Christians arrived. The Ariki placed the missionaries on each
of the islands and nurtured them. They were called “Child of the
Thigh,” meaning they were like children held on your knee, cared
for as they were established on land they were given by the chiefs
to build on. The House of Ariki is established in the constitution
of the Cook Islands. Before Government passes any Bill, they refer
it to our house for consideration. Once a year all the High Chiefs
are sworn in and vote. Council members are local government who
govern each island, with members elected from each village. The
High Chiefs don’t have a vote but act as advisors. Our main role is
to advise on anything to do with the welfare of the people. We also
have a support role for any projects the Government wants to start
that will benefit the people.
Where does New Zealand fit in with governing the Cook
Islands?
The Cooks Islands is self-governing in free association with New
Zealand. Since self government in 1965, we control our own
Internal Affairs while New Zealand controls Foreign Affairs
and also Defence, meaning they protect us if we are attacked.
Aitutaki has different land laws from Rarotonga, where the land
is controlled by the High Chiefs, then the sub-chiefs, then the
ordinary people. This causes a lot of friction. In Aitutaki, land
rights are the same for all, from chiefs to tiny tots. Every Cook
Islander has a right to land, even if they are born in New Zealand
of Cook Island parents.
What are some of the problems the people of Aitutaki face?
Our economy is not doing very well and the problem for our
people is lack of employment. The backbone of our economy was
agriculture – copra, bananas, oranges, tomatoes, avocados. Now
there is nothing, no agriculture, no exports. We cannot compete
with Samoa and Fiji, where there are very low wages. The wage
structure in the Cook Islands is very high so our produce is more
expensive. Before, New Zealand hadn’t planted these crops and
we were supplying them. New Zealand imports bananas from
Ecuador, which look very pretty on the shelves but aren’t as sweet
as ours, which tend to brown spot, so don’t look as pretty. Six
years ago the Government went bankrupt overnight, so they said
‘grow the private sector.’ Government gave people money to start
businesses, but many government employees who had trained
overseas bought airfare to New Zealand or Australia. In Aitutaki,
we started a business exporting trochus shell, but the Greenies said
we killed little animals to get the shells, which is not true. They
said people shouldn’t buy things made from shell, like buttons.
So now we have a lagoon full of trochus shell, and no business!
Now our backbone is tourism, but our people don’t know the
mechanics of tourism, which the Government relies on for tax.
If the Government doesn’t get enough tax, we might go through
another recession. There is also the problem of overseas marketing
of tourism, it seems as if the Cook Islands stops at Rarotonga.
Tourists don’t know about Aitutaki, our island. When people
come here for an excursion, they are sorry they have been booked
in for their whole stay in Rarotonga and wish to stay here. For
tourists to come, we also need flights seven days a week, but the
pastors of the Cook Islands Christian Church (the old London
Missionary Society) are stirring up trouble, saying the seventh day
should be kept holy.
The Cook Islands Christian Church pastors are a burden on the
people of the Cook Islands. Each year the church demands a $300
fee and 10% of a family’s earnings for the church. Each family
also has to take turns to provide food to the pastors. When they
oppose Tourism Development initiatives such as Sunday Flights,
they’re not thinking about the welfare of the people. They don’t
care because they’re alright. When they start starving because the
people cannot feed them, they might start thinking.
What have been your best moments as Queen?
Managing to get Manuae Island back to the people of Aitutaki.
Then, we had American Survivor come here. It was so difficult
trying to get our people to accept this. In the end they were
all happy, because it gave almost every home on the island an
opportunity to benefit. Managing to stop the Unit Title Bill in
the House. We said, ‘try it on Rarotonga and we will see,’ but
I don’t think it’s working very well at all. If Sunday flights go
ahead, we can do something for the people, but it’s hard, because
there are always people in the community dragging you down. We
can either be afraid and give in, or grasp the nettle and go ahead,
hoping in the end they will see it and be happy with it.
What are some of the hardest things about being Queen?
It is a lonely place. It means making decisions that are going to
affect people in the community and are not going to make them
happy, while some groups are happy. You’re just like the meat in
the sandwich. I always go by my conscience and am guided by my
oath to work for the welfare of the people.
Do you have any advice for the Cook Islanders in New
Zealand?
I feel very sorry for our people in New Zealand – a lot of them
are not doing well and can’t afford the airfare to return, even
though they want to come back. Some of them are on the dole,
unemployed and because of that situation, a lot of our children are
street kids. I would like the Cook Islands people in New Zealand
to really take the opportunity to educate their children, and when
they come back, come back home and build a nation.
Whatever happened to
the white NZ Male?
Another victim in the Box
OPINION
Written by Susan Ryder
In the early ‘80s Susan Ryder was New Zealand’s youngest radio announcer. She then spent more than a decade overseas. Upon returning in
1995, she was disgusted at the growth of bureaucracy and the Nanny State in the interim. “Every time I turned around, there was a busybody
just waiting to tell me what to think and how to live. I just wanted them to buzz off and mind their own business!” She heard Lindsay Perigo
on (the former) Radio Pacific discussing freedom with responsibility and realised that she shared that philosophy. Susan can sometimes be
heard on Newstalk ZB’s morning programme with Leighton Smith.
Scottish comedian Billy Connelly has been saying it for some time:
In this politically correct world, about the only group of people you
can openly criticise, and even downright insult, are white men.
It’s hard to argue. The one-time rulers of nearly everything seem
to be everyone’s favourite whipping boys. African nations routinely
point the finger to “white men” being the cause of that continent’s
misery, despite their decades of independence and majority rule.
The women’s movement vociferously targeted white males in its
early days, but has been notoriously silent on issues of Third World
gender inequality. And few would deny the radical feminisation of
the state education system here in New Zealand over the last few
decades, with grumblings as to its adverse effect upon the standard
of boys’ education.
Is it really a case of one-way traffic or just white men throwing a
wobbly? There exists an inbuilt ban applicable to just about every
ethnic or racial group imaginable - except white men. When it
comes to male Caucasians, it would seem to be open season all year
round. Well, doesn’t it?
I have a different perspective. I wonder at the insistence upon
categorising people in the first place. Upon pushing people into
boxes and labelling accordingly, as if they all think and behave as
one. ‘Collectivism’, as the process is known, is a direct assault upon
individual freedom, because it denies the individual the right to his
own thoughts and actions. It is a powerful tool, though, for those
who would seek to impose their views upon us. How often do we
hear the following, or similar:
Maori believe ..
Women want ..
Children need ..
The disabled can’t ..
Christians must ..
Pacific Islanders should ..
The elderly have to ..
Nurses understand ..
Immigrants can ..
And on it goes, conveniently categorising people, whilst ignoring
any diversity among the individuals concerned. So let’s put the box
marked “white men” to one side and concentrate instead upon the
whys and wherefores of collectivism.
Referring to block groups provides policy-makers and bureaucrats
with easy justification for imposition of their pet projects. Want
more tax dollars for your department to play with? Find a problem
or create a need. (Best make it emotive, as well. There’s no string
like a heartstring). The more funding a government department
attracts, the more staff it requires – which then requires more
funding next year and round we go again.
Don’t expect that manufactured problem to be ever solved, by the
way. Its existence is required in order to justify the bureaucratic
house of cards. It’s all very neat. And most effective, as
evidenced by the burgeoning growth in government over the last
decade (for no subsequent improvement in services).
So who are these individuals who purport to speak on our behalf?
The American philosopher Thomas Sowell routinely refers to the
‘Self-Anointed’; the arrogant souls who believe that they really do
know best. Sadly, government at both state and local level suffers
from an unhealthy infestation of this pest.
The Self-Anointed claim to speak for this group and that body,
followed invariably with a call for more public money. Well, why
find your own when you can demand it from others on someone’s
behalf? And if that means keeping yourself comfortably in the
tax-funded style to which you have become accustomed, so much
the better! It’s a beautiful thing.
The scourge of political correctness is inextricably linked to
collectivism. Whereas the latter conveniently groups people,
political correctness dictates thought and behaviour. It is a
prescribed set of beliefs to which people must adhere, or be
ridiculed, scorned or branded heretical. Heaven forbid an
individual be allowed independent thought and action. For
example, scientists who question the theory of man-made global
warming (AGW) are treated by the powers-that-be in a fashion
not unlike those who first questioned the doctrine of the Roman
Catholic Church. The modern state has deposed kings and
priests for the role of tyrant.
Political correctness is censorship encased within a velvet glove for
the sake of appearance. Imposed “for our own good”, its external
softness cannot hide its iron core. When that iron core joins
forces with authority, it becomes a force indeed. And force has
always been the enemy of freedom.
Hey, Billy! Tell those blokes to dump that box. It’s time for
every individual irrespective of colour, religion, race, gender or
sexual orientation to reject collectivism outright. Do not let the
busybodies presume to speak for you. Speak for yourself as a freethinking
individual. You are not a number. Yet.
