Alberts, Boutique luxury. Your friendly team of specialists, sharing o
Natasha Harris nee Lipscombe
was a cheeky, curly blonde haired
three year old when she acquired
her unique nickname. Growing up in
Ardmore on the family strawberry farm,
the juice of the sweet fruit staining her
face and white t-shirt, when asked by her
mother Margaret “ask dad to bring the
washing in,” from the top of the stairs,
Tasha called out to her father Len “Yo,
Fat Albert, mum wants you to bring the
washing in!” Natasha wasn’t insulting her
dad. - Bill Cosby’s show Fat Albert was her
absolute favourite TV programme. Len
called back “Don’t you call me Fat Albert,
I’ll call you Albert!” He did and from that
day, so did everyone else. In her teenage
years even her big brother Karl’s rugby
team called her Albert. With the nickname
firmly stuck Natasha remained ‘Albert’
throughout her childhood. So it made
perfect sense when Natasha opened her
first salon in Papakura in October 1997
that it should be called Alberts.
Natasha relocated Alberts to 2 / 23 Hall St
Pukekohe in August last year, closing the
original Papakura site and focusing on recreating
the brand that Alberts represents.
Now six months on the salon is going
extremely well. “I have found it really easy
to get great staff here in Pukekohe. Though
some are originally from the area, we have
also drawn in stylists from out of town.
Our original team of five when we opened
has now grown to eight. Over the years
I have learnt that having the right
team is crucial to the ultimate client
journey and the overall success of the
business.” Natasha fondly refers to her
team as Alberts Angels. “We really do have
a special group of talented hardworking
and fun individuals. “I feel very fortunate
to absolutely enjoy what I do for a job.”
Natasha knows exactly what clients want
from their salon experience at Alberts “I
expect my team to be in touch with the
industry and the constant changes that
seasons and fashion bring, and to pass this
on to our clients.” Natasha believes that our
hair should be an extension of our personalities
and just as we buy a new garment
or pair of shoes for a change in season, we
need to adapt our hairstyle, we offer our
clients a road map for their journey at
Alberts and making a plan for their hair’s
journey. (cont. page 4)
Introducing the
Alberts Team
Ashleigh Harris is Front of House: “It’s so rewarding
being able to see the clients when they walk
in the door, then after their transformations and
how a colour or cut can make someone shine from
the inside out. Working at Alberts is so much fun
and we all work well together as a team. It’s been
so amazing to be part of the Alberts journey and
being Natasha’s sister-in-law makes me even more
proud of her achievements. ”

ur knowledge and empowering clients with exceptional expertise.
Kylie Thompson: “As a teenager I was always
interested in hair, make up and fashion, which has
developed into an amazing career in hairdressing.
I was a fresh faced 14 year old when I started my
first job in a local hair salon, sweeping floors. Nine
years later I’m still growing in the industry and
Alberts is the perfect environment for me to extend
that further. At Alberts we are like a family and
always enjoy our jobs. The highlights of my career to
date is being asked to take part in Air New Zealand
Fashion week, working at GHD expert tour and working
at GHD seminars amoung Australasia’s best
hairdressers. Without Alberts I wouldn’t have been
given these great opportunities! Thanks Albert. ”
Carmen Wilson: “I have been hairdressing for
about nine years. I am very passionate about
my work, and by paying close attention and
getting to know my clients, I can bring to them an
exceptional experience while creating the perfect
style. Over the last three years I have been
attending courses and seminars with hairdressers
from Australia and Paris. The courses place emphasis
on cuts and colours, and all the latest
trends and catwalk fashions, which has helped
me give my clients the latest styles to suit them
and their needs. I enjoy working at Alberts and
am very lucky to have the opportunity to learn
and grow in all areas of hair and makeup.”
Belinda Quigley: “At 16, I graduated as a professional
make up artist and started at Alberts as a
1st year apprentice in 2009, where the team has
made me feel so welcome. I chose this career
because I love to make people feel and look great.
I work with Jane Iredale Mineral Makeup, which is
antibacterial, and has UVA and UVB protection in
all the mineral makeup, right down to the lipsticks!
Jane Iredale is simple to use at home, giving you
flawless salon results every time. It’s perfect for
special occasions, such as weddings and balls.
I am very confident and passionate about this
industry and feel lucky to have the opportunity to
give my best in such an exciting career!”
Clark Sowman: “My true interest in hairdressing
was sparked when I went to watch the Wella Young
Professional Stylist awards. The competitive
atmosphere and artistic flair inspired the passion
in me. I immediately enrolled and spent two years
at the Servilles Academy of Hairdressing, which
established a solid foundation to start my career.
Watching the hair evolve with shape, texture,
colour and style, and having the client feel great
is extremely rewarding. Alberts has given me the
opportunity to really apply and advance my skills.
Natasha has created a stunning, fl owing salon,
with such a dynamic and cohesive team. I feel
privileged to be a part of Alberts Hair Salon”
Jennifer Stewart: “Its all about feeling alive, Anita Atkinson: “In the back of my mind I’ve
looking good, and being true to yourself. After always taken a liking to hairdressing and when I
18 years of hairdressing I’ve found my new found out after spending a year studying science at
home working at Alberts. The education is university that it wasn’t for me, I decided to start a
exceptional, I have this fantastic opportunity to hairdressing course. I went to Premier Hairdressing
continue to learn and pass on my knowledge. College in Takapuna and this is where I found my
Colour complements everything; with so many passion for hairdressing, I loved making people
choices we can be inspired to create a glamourous
feel good about themselves after a new hair do.
look every season. Our limits are endless, I was fortunate enough to join the Alberts team
with foiling being my absolute favourite – it and look forward to attending the up and coming
creates that perfect finish to all our texture courses and training that will help me on my way to
Talented
styling and beautiful cuts.”
finishing
Angels
my apprenticeship. I hope to be qualified
as soon as I can and know Alberts will give me the
motivation and training to do so.”
In November Alberts hosted their first
client styling lounge, a fantastic evening
attended by over 40 style savvy woman,
in conjunction with ghd. It was an evening
about sharing the knowledge and teaching
techniques that you are able to replicate
at home, a fantastic night transforming
our guests’ hair into an array of beautiful
curls, waves and volume. “We have
more of these evenings planned for
2010 so look out for our next Alberts
styling lounge.”
She also realizes that a happy relaxed
environment where staff enjoy their work,
provides a wonderful atmosphere for
clients. “We have created an environment
where people can enjoy a special ‘me’
time, some mums arrive exhausted, but
they can relax and be pampered, having
their hair styled and coloured is a guaranteed
way to give you a lift and the cream
on the cake is our complimentary mini
makeovers where clients are introduced
to Jane Iredale our 100% natural mineral
makeup range, clients walk out feeling like
a million dollars!”
Natasha, a mother of two lively young boys,
Bailey (3 ½) and 20month old Connor
knows how important it is for mums and
busy professional woman to take time for
some pampering! She and husband Scott
co-owner of Alberts and a local Pukekohe
businessman are blessed with a close
knit, supportive family. The couple live in
Ardmore near the original strawberry farm,
where their children can enjoy the same
country upbringing as the young Albert.
Natasha began her apprenticeship with
Georgia Hutchinson at Georges in Parnell,
and after 3 and a half years moved back
to the Franklin area to work in local salons.
However it was her early training that
inspired her to create a “city” experience
in her local area. Natasha says “At
Alberts we realise that we can make a huge
difference in not only how our clients
look, but how they feel. Our salon has
been designed to make our clients feel
special from their first contact through
to their departure. It is a time to be
welcomed, pampered, listened to and
cared for in a relaxed and friendly “family”
environment . We believe in providing our
clients with knowledge and information
so they can achieve the same results at
home as they get at the salon”.
Coffee 2 Go-Kart Receives Warm Welcome!
When Mark Chamberlain was made redundant in his
driving job as the recession bit, he was determined
to find a new job using his years of experience.
Eight months on from buying a coffee machine and a car,
Mark is now like a local ‘Santa Claus,’ complete with his trademark
red shirt, as he appears daily with drinks and muffins at
grateful offices around Pukekohe.
Mark: “The service has been really well received in Pukekohe and
at events around the district. Before starting Coffee 2 Go-Kart,
I did product trials to find just the right coffee, one that gives
consistency and appeals to a wide range of tastes. Three
months after starting, I did the same with muffins and was fortunate
to find Kathy’s Kitchen. Kathy bakes our orders fresh
every day – when I pick them up in the morning, they are warm
from the oven and smell wonderful!”
A range of iced drinks was added to Mark’s selection of teas and
coffee for summer and, due to popular demand, he is now looking
into providing wraps and coffee for lunchtime customers.
One of Mark’s aims when he started his new career was to have
fun and he achieves that every day. Workers are always pleased
to see him arrive with his cheery smile and basket of tempting
muffins. It’s not unusual for him to receive texts on his rounds
saying “when are you coming Mark? We need our coffee!”
Wife and business partner Debbi works with Mark at special
events around the district, including calf club days, school galas
and fundraising events like the big fireworks display in Pukekohe.
The pair donates a percentage of their takings to the groups
benefiting from fundraisers and Mark hands out fliers from his
Mark and Debbi Chamberlain.
Coffee 2 Go-Kart to promote the events.
“We just love living in Franklin and it’s important for us to be part
of the community, helping out wherever we can,” says Mark.
With 11 year old twins Ben and Emma at Patumahoe School,
the family is also busy each year with their calf club. The couple
settled in Pukekohe seven years ago, but Mark’s family farm
was at Bombay so he spent a lot of time in the area as a child.
People sometimes ask what DeMac Payroll is – signwritten on
Mark’s Coffee 2 Go-Kart. DeMac Payroll is Debbi’s business, a
service for small business owners to take away the headaches
of staff payroll. “I set up a whole payroll system, managing holidays,
sick leave, child support payments, Kiwi Saver and dealing
with IRD. Staff payments can be complex, especially with
the tax changes. I promote Ace Payroll, but can work with any
existing system,” says Debbi.
Bringing Success to Your Door
Everyone Needs Honest Advice and Support.
Some might say magic, but professionalism and focus is
what has made Elizabeth Pukekohe’s leading consultant
in residential property. She grew her real estate career
within the Barfoot & Thompson family, through the Pukekohe
Office, where she still is based. It is a strong office with a strong
team. Elizabeth believes, “My strongest competition and best
support work alongside me.” Her closest support comes from
daughter in law Jayne and husband James Heard. James says,
“Elizabeth is the spark, the energy and the inspiration. Without
her, we wouldn’t be the team we are. Jayne’s and my job is to
ensure Elizabeth can focus on looking after her clients and finding
buyers for their properties.”
Elizabeth: “When we meet with clients, one clear objective arises
– to make sure our clients are able to make sound decisions.
They need to know what’s going on in their price sector of the
market. We are always out there, seeing and selling property,
talking to people, finding what is happening in the broader
community, in our industry, so we can be right up to the mark
when informing our clients.”When advising clients and helping
customers make sound buying decisions, Elizabeth draws on her
considerable experience in local property and knowledge of the
township. She has been Pukekohe’s most effective residential
sales person since 2004 and still sells more residential property
than anyone else in Pukekohe. Her own marketing expertise is
ably supported by James, who is a seasoned sales person with
a Masters in Business Administration. He uses his experience to
bring broader economic and industry factors into local focus.
Selling and buying property, it’s a form of ‘match-making’ that
brings in many rewards, as people are thrilled to find their very own
dream home. Part of working this ‘magic’ is finding an empathy
with people and getting a clear perception of what will suit them.
This is where people recognise Elizabeth’s special qualities and
knowledge. Past clients and customers are happy to refer friends
and family to her and use her professional skills to sell the home
they purchased through her.
Elizabeth likes to keep things simple, “To me, what is important in
any campaign is to do what we do well, do the basics thoroughly
and to be consistent. Consistency is vital, as well as being flexible
and making things work for people. Every buyer is looking for
something totally different, every property is different and finding
and expanding on that point of difference is what makes that
home show its true magic to potential buyers.” Elizabeth adds:
“We form a partnership with our vendors to get them the best
price in the market place and to match them with the best buyer.
Ensuring the property is well presented and marketed is a vital
part of that. A great advantage of working closely together is that
we share a ‘feel’ for what the buyers are looking for and are all
qualified agents, so any one of us can show the properties.”
Elizabeth uses James’ and Jayne’s experience to the benefit of
her clients. She brings their individual perceptions together to
define each property and present the special features that will
attract just the right buyer.
James, Elizabeth and Jayne
“Because three of us are working together, we are seeing more
buyers, sharing information and seeing different buyer patterns
and that is a great advantage. Last year was not a boom year, but it
was and still is possible to get the results our clients want by working
hard.” James is also a strong advocate of effective marketing
in real estate. “We believe in marketing because it works. Every
property has a great story that has to be told to the right audience.
The person who buys the home is the person who sees those
things that have particular appeal to them at the right price.”
Daughter in law Jayne has worked in real estate for three years,
starting in administration, then as PA for a top agent. She took
the opportunity to become a residential sales consultant and was
named Rookie of the Year in her previous firm. Jayne’s understanding
of many different aspects of the job makes her an integral part
of its success. While her main role is client and customer contact,
Jayne’s skills and experience allow to back up Elizabeth in showing,
selling and negotiating contracts. “Working with family is brilliant,
we form a strong team,” Jayne says, Our complimentary roles
enable us to work well for our clients.”Jayne looks after Elizabeth’s
client and customer database. She has a lot of phone contact with
people and finds email a great way of alerting people.
Elizabeth places great value on the Company’s expertise. “The
Barfoot and Thompson systems and support make my business
success possible.” Elizabeth has been a member of Barfoot &
Thompson’s elite sales group ‘The Top 25,’ since 2004.
Images Medispa is now the leading edge in relaxation, beautification,
and scientific skin treatments. Consutations are uniquely
tailored to each individual person’s needs, and by listening
to what those needs are, the therapist is able to suggest the
best possible solution to achieve first-class results. Given today’s
society’s need for efficient, relaxing and effective treatments.
Images strive to bring you the latest in product and techniques, with
an emphasis on scientific research to produce treatments to target
specific skin ailments resulting in clinical evidence of change.
Jocelyn advises “with the face the only part of the body not
covered, the sun’s damaging rays age your skin faster. This can
have a disheartening effect on your image, which, in turn results
in lowered self esteem. The UV in this country is a challenge, and
as research progresses, what was considered safe and acceptable
sun exposure, has now changed. It is essential to look after
our skin and prevent the damage being done, rather than having
to repair the sun’s influence at a later date. Prevention is better
than cure and with the scientifically developed products there is
no reason to incur preventable damage.”
With the Images Medispa team’s collective knowledge, we
can advise clients on appearance enhancements such as
Botox, Dysport, Restylin, vein and mole removal. We have good
working relationships with external specialists and are able to
provide recommendations pertaining to alternative remedies
and therapies, what you might expect from the therapies and
where to get them. Images Medispa are also actively involved
with bi-monthly professional development for all staff to
further our skills. This includes advice on skin cancers, early
signs of skin change, acne, skin concerns in relation to menopause,
stressed skin from smoking and /or sun damage, and
straight out lifestyle damage.
Images Medispa manager, Angela, says, “most treatments fit
into a lunch break or one and a half hours, which means even in
today’s busy schedules, you still have time to come in for a treatment”,
and when asked about the enjoyment of the job – “where
else can you work where you see such amazing results and
elation on client’s faces, and receive regular hugs of gratitude. It
is an exciting time to be within skin and Medispa profession.”
Medispa level skincare products used in salon treatments
are developing at an exciting rate. Scientists are now creating
products that can give clinically tested results to repair sun
damage and provide an Environmental Protection Factor, or EPF.
These will soon be the bench mark that all of us will look for in
our skincare, just like “Broad Spectrum” sunscreen has done for
Sun Block products.
Salon treatments have advanced too, with more of the high
level “Peels” available. Peels are now made from a combination
of Fruit acids, (aha), Enzymes, Vitamins and Hydrators at very
concentrated levels to give results, yet are extremely comfortable
and safe to receive, unlike chemical peels which are strictly
medical specialist field treatments. Peels can be done weekly,
creating a series, in your lunch time, as is the trend at the
moment. Just 30 minutes to achieve amazing results with
almost no down time. Great if you don’t want needles or knives.
To see results fast, we use Cosmeceuticals – skincare that
contains pharmaceutical-strength ingredients for results
in cosmetic use, and Superceuticals for accelerated results,
beyond just pharmaceutical. This new generation of proven and
effective skincare often combines science-based with natural
ingredients.
Jocelyn is now working on the business rather than in the
business leaving her accomplished co-managers and staff
to do the day to day running. The continual post graduate
development of the team means they are up to date in the latest
techniques and technologies. The training is the best it has
ever been with people now being trained up to 1st year
nursing level, including a bachelor of health science cross
crediting into nursing. Images Medispa pride themselves on
being able to teach clinical techniques for clients to do at home,
and have make up specialists on hand to teach makeup application.
The bottom line is, if you look good, you feel good.
by Sharon to stay as he has an
says Sharon, and he has now
worked in the sales and customer
Angus is extremely accomplished in this area and only needed
to learn the ropes in terms of the technical bed details. Working
together as a team, Sharon trained Angus from scratch in the
finer details of Sleepyheads unique design benefits, and their
current range.
Angus says “It’s not just about selling beds, it’s about supporting
each other to give the best possible information available
to the customer for them to make an informed decision with
the information we provide”. Sharon backs him up by mentioning
“we believe in the product we are selling, and we know the
about.
What you might not know about
Maggie is that in her free time she
ride a horse while also learning to play polo, Maggie is driven by
challenge. Juggling a career, and playing polo, Maggie developed
a passion for the game and the people involved, but her current
work at the time saw her away from home and her career took
but overseas as well. Initially taught by Dawn Slater, who is one
of New Zealand’s top female players, Maggie was put in contact
Paul was an outstanding player, and was one of the first New
his life was taken in a Polo accident in Cirencester,
England after falling during a game. His legendary status in the
would sit afterwards and share a tale or two. “He was very much
Clyde McLean has taken over where Paul left off, and Maggie
Visit Leads to Making Tuakau Home
Pharmacist Carole Baxter was doing a lot of travelling around
Auckland as a locum when a stint in Tuakau changed her
life. “I had worked as a pharmacist in Wellington, Drury
and Auckland and was living in Franklin when I first locumed in
Tuakau. I thought, ‘I really like it here.’ So when Tuakau Amcal
Pharmacy business came up for sale, I was very interested. Becoming
a business owner is a big move, but the previous owner
Ron was keen that I should take over and I’m so glad I did! I have
always liked to get to know the community where I work and over
the past seven years, my family and I have become part of that.”
The close, friendly community atmosphere in Tuakau is part of the
environment at Tuakau Amcal Pharmacy. Staff social events are
held several times a year, where everyone has “a lot of fun” – the
most recent, an hilarious 70s Night. Once a week some of them
also get together for a Fitness Night. Carole enjoys off-road running
and is training for her second half marathon over Motutapu
and Rangitoto at the end of March. Health and fitness is a pivotal
part of life in the Baxter family – husband James is a Podiatrist,
while daughters Katie (16) and Minna (13) are very keen on swimming
and water polo.
“I am very fortunate to have highly qualified and long serving staff
in the pharmacy,” Carole says. “All have been here for a long time
– Carin Hogan has been here for 16 years and Frances Rastovich
for 11 years. Keeping up to date with the latest in health care is
an important part of our work. Carin and I have both completed a
Natural Health course.”
Cairnscorp, ‘the canvas
Nelson Street (once
Cairns and Woodward) has
been a well known Pukekohe
business run by the same
family since 1914. In June
2008 Julie and Michael Madden
took over ownership,
bringing in sweeping new
changes.
“The business is now completely
computerised and we
have expanded to include
a range of domestic products
– interior, exterior, equine and pet products. Our latest service
is interior blinds and upholstery for interior furniture, as well
as outdoor furniture and marine,” says Julie. “We are still
serving the transport industry and continuing the mobile
repair service, covering Franklin and the Waikato. We are
now also an approved distributor of SolarShield Canopies,
which have domestic and commercial applications. They
are brilliant for schools and covered walkways. Shelter
Station has also appointed us their distributor in the area.”
Tuakau Amcal Pharmacy’s move last year to the Medical Centre
complex in George Street has given the pharmacy spacious new
premises, with plenty of parking available. Its positioning is especially
convenient for patients to fill prescriptions without having to
drive further.
Carole: “Customers have changed over the years. They often access
information about their condition and come into the pharmacy
already well informed. It’s wonderful to be able to get to
know people and become part of their lives. Being a pharmacist in
Tuakau is a rewarding profession that gets better all the time.”
A Whole New Look for Cairnscorp
Julie and Michael have a staff of 14 at Cairnscorp, including
sales reps Tom and Dean. All of the staff live in the local area.
Julie: “Our community is very important to us and we will always
get behind local groups with their fundraising. We believe in
supporting local businesses, sourcing products right here where
we can. If we don’t have what a customer wants, we are happy
to look and source it for them. When people in turn support
their local businesses, they are supporting the future of the area.”
Groups Cairnscorp regularly support are school calf club days,
Xmas in the park, Counties Hockey and local equestrian events.
Horses are a passion for Julie. Her twin daughters and Front of
House Karen and Annette also ride. Naturally, there is a good
range of equine products at Cairnscorp, including truck and
float rear curtains (see the product at www.cairnscorp.co.nz)
Michael has known the area for many years from his days as
a soldier at Papakura Army Camp. He is president of Karaka
Tennis Club and is part of the committee planning a big development
for Franklin, Karaka Sports Park.
The pair is optimistic about the future of the district.
“It’s a place with great community spirit. We enjoy being part of
activities in the area and helping our customers find the appropriate
quality product for their requirements,” says Mike.
Keep Your Children
Healthy this Winter!
Here is some information about the flu and other
illnesses, as well as practical tips on what to do
if your child becomes ill. Remember, it is a good
idea to take advantage of the government provided
immunisations. If you are not aware of the schedule, check
with your health provider. Flu vaccines can be given to
children over 6 months of age, but are not subsidized unless
you child has certain chronic illnesses, such as asthma or
some cardiac problems.
If you have any questions about the flu vaccine, visit your
health care provider or call the Immunisation Advisory Centre
(IMAC) on 0800 IMMUNE (466863) or check out the website
www.immune.org.nz
KEEP YOUR CHILD’S IMMUNISATIONS
CURRENT AND ALSO...
• Provide a healthy diet, with plenty of fruit and
vegetables. Avoid sweets and lollies, limiting
treats like that to once or twice a week.
• Continue breastfeeding if possible.
• Avoid unnecessary contact with sick children (this is a
tricky one – younger children are exposed to a wide
range of illnesses from school ages siblings).
• Don’t expose children to cigarette smoke (second hand
smoke can occur even if parents are going outside to
smoke – smoke molecules remain in the skin).
• Don’t take your children to daycare when they are sick.
• Dress your children warmly.
• Practice good hand washing, and teach your child to
wash their hands after going to the toilet and
before meals (this one is extremely important– many
viruses and bacteria are passed from person to person
by touching your hand to your nose or mouth).
PROUDLY SPONSORED BY
PRACTICAL TIPS FOR CARING FOR
YOUR SICK BABY OR CHILD:
• Care for the child in a separate, well-ventilated room
away from other members of the household.
• Give regular paracetamol or ibuprofen for fever in the
dose recommended on the package (Unless your health
care provider says otherwise. Do not give medication
containing aspirin to children under 14.)
• Offer cool fluids frequently, including
water, fruit juice and milk.
• Dress your child in light weight clothing.
• Give a lukewarm bath or shower.
(Do not give cold baths or showers,
which can be unpleasant and
distressing for the child, and does
not lower body temperature.)
• Use salt-water drops (saline) to treat
a stuffy nose.
• Keep the child at home and resting
until they can no longer pass
on the virus.
VISIT YOUR DOCTOR IF YOUR CHILD...
• is unusually sleepy, Is fast breathing,
or has difficulty breathing
• has a ‘fit’, or convulsion
• is refusing fluids, or has greatly
decreased urine output
• is complaining of a sore neck or
head (though children frequently
have aches and pains with
viral illnesses)
• has a rash you cannot identify
• is not improving after 48 hours
If you have any questions or
concerns about your child’s
condition, take them to your GP.
Building a Sanctuary From the Day to Day Hum Drum!
David Reid Homes Building a Future
David Reid Home’s philosophy is to develop and build a home
that offers clients a sanctuary from the day to day ‘hum drum’
of every day life. Brendon says, “Yes, I’d be delighted to have a
chat with clients about building their own special sanctuary.”
New Franchisee Owner Brendon Hamill
David Reid Homes is a quality brand that lets the home
owner express their own individual character and
usability. It is one of the largest building groups in New
Zealand and has won more Master Builder awards than any
other building company. For new franchisee owner Brendon
Hamill, building homes is all about the individuality of the
owners and working in partnership with clients on what they
want in their dream home.
“Right from the start, we sit down and put together a custom
designed plan to achieve the client’s dreams and visions,”
explains Brendon. “We use a unique 10 step building process
that involves the client right throughout and work in partnership
with some of the New Zealand’s leading suppliers, because
quality is important.
“From the time we first step onto the site, we are looking for the
best ways to create a home for that property, ways that take
advantage of its best aspects, like sun and the profile of the
land. Sometimes building sites can be very challenging and
we have to think outside the box for a cost-effective solution.
Delivering quality and space for the desired budget can also be
a challenge and it takes a lot of hands-on-tools building experience
in order to advise correctly.”
Brendon keeps up to date with the many advancements in
the building industry. “I make a point of being right up to date
so I can advise and offer options. One of the areas that I am
currently undertaking is the integration of eco-friendly energy
management into our home designs. With the ever rising cost
of fossil fuels it’s important to build energy conversion systems
into future proofing. Very few products that have come across
my desk actively work. By working, I mean saving the home
owner money at the same time satisfying functionality. Take
solar heating for example. In my opinion it isn’t cost effective.
Everyone wants it but it takes years and years to get a payback
from it, not to mention the maintenance of keeping the system
working. There are more cost effective systems available,
however it does mean you will still need to use non renewable
resources”.
“Your home is the biggest investment you will probably make.
Build with the best”
Managing Director Brendon Hamill continues “We take great pride
in building a clients new dream home, this reflects in the quality of
our work and our commitment to excellence. It’s when a project
is at the final stage of completion that we (my team) get a chance
to reflect on our client’s initial vision. The home presented in this elocal advertisement is
a great example of just how we interact with our clients moulding their lifestyle, family requirements
and dreams into a tangible living breathing home. It’s the special touches and
NEW ZEALAND HISTORY
Despite the Clear Evidence, Some Archaeologists Did Not Want to Accept the Story the Bones T
Academics Agree to Pre 1350AD NZ
Ancient Rat and Moa Bones Point the Way to Early Settlement
This interpretation of a moa first appeared in Ferdinand von
Hochstetter’s book Neu-Seeland
Human settlement in New Zealand has been officially
settled on as around 1350AD. This is what is in the
‘accepted’ history books. This is what new generations of
New Zealanders are taught. The conclusion is based upon a theory
that the first canoes arrived from Polynesia sometime after
the violent eruption of Mount Tarawera of around 700 years
ago – a cataclysmic event not mentioned in Maori oral history.
Scientists basing conclusions on genetic testing calculate that
“the founding population of Aotearoa must have been at least
100 to 200, including at least 50 females, in order to grow to
around 100,000 with the amount of genetic diversity existing
when Europeans first arrived.” This is the ‘Short Chronology’ of
human settlement in New Zealand, based on the assumption
that Polynesians are the only travellers to settle in New Zealand.
But vital evidence proves the ‘Long Chronology’ of much earlier
occupation and this evidence was reluctantly accepted by a
slim majority of members at the New Zealand Archaeological
Association Conference in 2002. So, what are the facts?
Who Ate all the Moa?
The fate of the Moa has intrigued researchers since Europeans
first arrived in New Zealand, as a huge number of Moa skeletons
surfaced right around the country. Julius Haast, PH.D.
and Member of the Royal Society wrote several papers in the
1870s, listing painstaking evidence leading to his conclusion
that Moa were hunted to extinction by an ancient people who
inhabited New Zealand before Maori. He said: “It has been the
fashion to assert that the present native inhabitants of New
Zealand, the Maoris, are the race who have hunted and exterminated
the Moa… it is my duty to examine the data and bring
in turn what I consider overwhelming evidence to the contrary,
namely that the forefathers of the Maoris not only have neither
hunted nor exterminated the Moa, but that they knew nothing
about it…Haast quoted an earlier exhaustive study by Rev.
William Colenso in which he wrote: “From native traditions we
gain nothing to aid us in our enquiries after the probable age
in which this animal lived; for although New Zealand abounds
in traditionary lore, both natured and supernatural, he appears
to be totally ignorant of anything concerning the Moa… If such
an animal ever existed within the time of the present race of
New Zealanders, surely to a people possessing no quadruped
and but very scantily with both animal and vegetable food, the
chase and capture of such a creature would not only be a grand
achievement, but one also, from its importance, not likely to be
ever forgotten; that many things of comparatively minor importance
are by them handed down from father to son in continued
succession from the very night of history.” It appears Maori had
virtually no first hand knowledge of Moa.
Haast commented that early voyagers, Captain Cook, Captain
Vancouver, Admiral d’Entrecasteaux and Captain King noted
down carefully local flora and fauna and the “traditions of
the natives,” with no mention of the existence of the Moa. He
concluded that Moa flourished in the post-pliocene period (from
2.588 million years ago), because most of the huge quantities
of their bones were found in alluvium of that era. Stone implements
and flint tools found with the bones closely resembled
those found in post-pliocene beds in Europe.
In 1868 Haast received two ancient human skulls found in shifting
sandhills near an encampment of Moa hunters “near the
Selwyn” and sent it to Professor Dr C. G. Carus, the president
of the Imperial German Academy of Nauralists. This eminent
physiologist informed Haast he was mistaken in identifying
them as Maori, as they belonged to “some other race.” Haast
also noted: “The natives assert that in the interior of the North

old: That the Accepted Theory of Human Settlement in NZ from AD1200-1300 was INCORRECT
Ancient stone mounds can be seen all around New Zealand. These (plus two earth amphitheatres and remains of a stone lined waterway)
can be seen in ARC Tapapakanga Regional Park, just south of Orere Point.
Island a race had existed called Maero, which they described
as wild men of the woods, and somewhat like Australians...”
Botanist and geologist Rev. Richard Taylor researched Maori
traditions, finding that when the Hawaiiki immigrants landed,
they found a race of black people using moa bone and flint tools.
These “ancient inhabitants of the island, called “wild men of
the woods” were known as Maero and Mohoao, found throughout
the country. They were wiped out by the Polynesians in
Waitara and Patea. ( Te Ika a Maui published 1855) The Tainui
whakapapa Nga iwi o Tainui by Pei Te Hurinui Jones and Bruce
Biggs (P.14 2.2) says: “Toi found the following tribes here: the
Winiwini, the Ruataamore, the Pananehu, the Maru-iwi and the
Tai-taawaro. These people occupied the land from Southland to
Oo-a-Kura in Taranaki, from Auckland to Hauraki, and certain
parts of the East Coast. It is said that these people were not
like Maoris, for some of them were very black, and they had flat
knees. The local women ran after Toi’s men because they were
so handsome. Their offspring were incorporated into the local
people, and known as the Multitude-of-Toi.” Note: In 1925 a
boomerang was found by Mr A.W.B. Powell in ancient middens
at Muriwai Beach. It had clearly been buried for a considerable
time. Some early writers attributed the origin of the black
skinned people spoken of by Maori to be Melanesia.
A study using the variability of mitochondrial DNA in 2002
estimated all Moa species to number 3-12 million 6,000 years
BP ago, dropping to 159,000 before AD 1280. There is no
evidence disease played a part in the bird’s demise, but there
is ample evidence of the presence of humans much earlier
than AD 1280.
The Hunters
In the 1800s, some Maori spoke of hunting and eating Moa. The
New Zealand Institute commented in 1892 on The Antiquity of
the Moa by Captain Gilbert Mair: “When Maoris of to-day had
legends to tell concerning the moa they were all of such preposterous
and mythical character that they proved the truth of
what the old chiefs of fifty years ago alleged – viz., Neither they
nor their forefathers had ever seen the moa, because the last
moas were destroyed at the time of the Deluge. That the Dinornis
(moa) had been killed and cooked by men in New Zealand
was certain from the geological evidence, but that the Polynesian
Maori had known the Dinornis at all was highly improbable.
Possibly vague accounts had been handed down from the
prehistoric inhabitants (moa-hunters), with whom it was almost
certain the Polynesian immigrants had intermarried.”
The Evening Post reported ‘An Interesting Relic’ on September
11, 1888: A mummy discovered by a Mr Champness on the
West Taieri River in 1864 was found in an 80ft deep cave with a
leg bone of an extinct moa lying across the head. Plaited human
hair was around the neck and the skeleton of a tui between the
knees. Experts at the British Museum pronounced it to be the
remains of an adult woman, whose height when alive was not
more than 3ft. The Government Geologist of NZ, Dr Hector said
the mummy was over 1000 years old, of the race of people who
inhabited the island before the Maoris. Several specimens of
this race had been discovered but this was the most perfect.
In the 1970s, researcher Russell Price, aided by large support
teams, found conclusive evidence of human activity in
the Hawkes Bay before the 1350BC Waimihia volcanic ash fall,
verified by the country’s leading pedologist Alan Pullar. At this
lowest level, beneath undisturbed tephra ash from the Kaharoa
Fall (Mt Tarawera) of 1100AD, the Taupo Fall (186AD) and
Waimihia, cooked moa bones were found. Some had marks cut
by a sharp stone implement.
NEW ZEALAND INSTITUTE
(From the Wellington Independent, September 24, 1868)
On Saturday, there was a large audience at the Colonial Museum, presided over by his
Excellency the Governor, to hear a highly interesting and suggestive lecture, by the Hon.
Mr. Mantell, on the Moa….(abridged) Dr Hector, in proposing a vote of thanks to
the lecturer, remarked that it was highly valuable to have obtained the expression of his
opinions respecting the association of the Moa with the Aborigines (original peoples of
the land) of this colony. As Mr. Mantell had arrived in this country well qualified
for the task by previous training, and had enjoyed favourable opportunities as the first
explorer of a large extent of the colony where these birds formerly abounded. The collections
in the Museums in Europe and America show how well he availed himself of these
opportunities. He (Dr. Hector) understood Mr. Mantell to incline to the opinion,
that the Moa owed its destruction to a race of aborigines different in their habits and
savage attainments from the Maoris of the present day, though perhaps having the same
origin…Mr. Travers remarked with regard to the origin of the aborigines by whom the
Moa were exterminated, and that he considered them to be a distinct race, now represented
by the Morioris of the Chatham Islands. He impressed on the attention of the meeting
the important field which New Zealand offered for ethnological research, and related as
a circumstance requiring explanation that in a certain pit in the Waikato, a number of human
skeletons were found in an erect position arranged around the side, each with a block
of wood on its head. It is hoped that someone will investigate the matter.
Rat Bones Define the Past
Non-human bones are invaluable as
a way to prove the antiquity of human
settlement in New Zealand, invaluable
because, unlike human remains,
they are not subject to tapu and can
be analysed scientifically and without
prejudice. In 1996 a dramatic discovery
divided the scientific community.
Zoologist Richard Holdaway discovered
and radiocarbon dated kiore (Pacific rat) bones at older than
2000 B.P. (Before the Present, 1950). These rats could not
have made their own way to New Zealand. They had to come
with man. DNA studies (Matisoo-Smith et al 1998) indicated
several lineages of kiore with separate origins, suggesting multiple
immigrations. Not all rat bones were found on the coast,
some were well inland and were under Taupo ash, which has an
age of c. 1800 B.P. Holdaway used the same precise measuring
of undisturbed ash band layering as Russell Price to back up
the date for the bones. Holdaway had set out to confirm the
Short Chronology, but reported the contradicting findings in a
true scientific manner.
Despite the clear evidence, some archaeologists did not want
to accept the story the bones told: that the accepted theory
of human settlement in New Zealand from AD1200-1300 was
incorrect. The method of ash layer dating was vigorously attacked,
but intensive retesting found it to be sound. A vote at
the 2002 Archaeological Association Conference was split – 27
voted for and 24 against early human arrival. There was eventually
a majority consensus that humans had brought the rats to
New Zealand in 100AD, but didn’t stay.
Professor John Flenley, then Head of the Geology Department
at Massey University, commented on pre-1300AD settlement:
“I think they (Maori) came but remained in small numbers
because, apart from hunting and fishing they couldn’t really get
much to eat. Their tropical crops couldn’t grow very well.” This
ignores the evidence that early Maori found a large populace
with well established gardens already here (taro, kumera, yams,
several species of potato. South American type stone “Potato
God” statuettes were found on Mokoia Island in Lake Rotorua
and around the Auckland Isthmus. The latter are on display at
the Auckland War Memorial Museum. Plentiful food was, and
still is, yielded by the forests and internal waterways – eg pikopiko,
huhu grubs, te kouka, puha, harore, eels, koura (fresh
water crayfish), as well as birds, berries and kaimoana (seafood,
including seaweed.) There are even ‘bush’ seasonings like
the peppery horopito and mint tasting kawakawa leaves.
But entrenched ideas are hard to shift. Richard Holdaway was
lucky his findings were grudgingly accepted. Professor Mike
Elliott lost his post-doctorate fellowship at NIWA for submitting
a paper showing that fossilised pollen, taken in core samples
within silt wash deep beneath the sea off Hawkes Bay, proved
evidence of significant human occupation and deforestation in
the Hawkes Bay district around 600AD. The New Zealand Institute
of Geological and Nuclear Sciences said that analysing
fossilised pollen was its business and NIWA should keep out of
it. Elliott’s findings were thus swept under the carpet.
If There Was Nobody Here, Who Built These?
Koru Pa at New Plymouth, Taranaki is one of several stone pa
surviving in the area, two of which are massive. The plaque at
Koru Pa reads: “These lands formed one of the earliest Maori
settlements in New Zealand and were probably occupied from
about 1000AD until 1826 when the Waikato drove the Taranaki
tribes southward away from the home of their ancestors.” Oral
tradition states the Pa was built by “friendly Maori,” not the
later Polynesian people who were in severe decline through
inter-tribal war and high infant mortality by the dawn of the
19th century. Up to 200 people, including 50 females, arriving
in 1200AD could not have multiplied sufficiently to have built
these fortresses, constructed in a similar style to the ancient
hill forts of England, Wales and Scotland. Koru itself is typical
in design to Rath/Casel structures in Ireland, complete with
underground tunnels and remains of a standing stone circle
lining up with Mt Taranaki, giving a clue about the heritage of
the people who built the Pa.
This huge stone structure would have required considerable
labour, time and stone working expertise to build. Some of the
walls would have extended upward of 14 feet high and giant
excavations cut through solid rock. Many other large Pa around
the country fall into the same category. Turuturumokai Pa in
Hawera, with evidence of a labyrinth of underground tunnels
would have taken thousands of labourers to construct and
defend, its size presumably intended to protect a very large
population: How could a small migration of Polynesians
in 1300AD build these and why? None were built in their homelands,
where warfare was rife.
Moa, Rats and Stone Buildings:
The figures simply don’t add up to a Short Chronology. It seems
academics are starting to agree. “The timing of the human
discovery and colonization of New Zealand” (2007), a paper
by professors of the University of Waikato and Massey, including
Prof. John Flenley, recognises the Long Chronology as “the
most plausible hypothesis.” (available online at www.sciencedirect.com)
When will we get to see this confirmed in our history books,
government websites (used for school projects) and tourist
guidebooks?

New Zealand For Sale Again & Again…
Part II
“a source of endless litigation
and disagreement between the
two races”?
These words were penned by the ‘Protector of Natives’
Rev. George Clarke in 1842. Clarke was referring to the
position in law of Maori dispossessed of their lands by
conquering iwi, but they have a prophetic ring for New
Zealand today. The Waitangi Tribunal has been sitting for 35
years, a bewildering process that to many New Zealanders
seems an endless handing over of money, Crown Land and
assets to claimants. The ‘Grievance Gravy Train’ perception is
widely believed, as over the years, there have been numerous
successful claims for land that can be verified as legally sold or
already paid for in “Full and Final Settlement” compensation,
and documented as such during the 19th and 20th century.
The Waikato Double Compensated
First Time: Tainui’s raupatu (land confiscation) grievance had
been voluntarily delayed during the Second World War and in
1946 a grand hui was held at Turangawaewae. Princess Te Puea
had agreed that there would be monetary settlement, excluding
a ‘land for land’ deal. Tita Wetere attacked the view that “the
spiritual loss of the land” could be rectified by money, but he was
censured for his stand. The Tainui settlement accorded the iwi
₤5,000 per annum in perpetuity, and because of the “fine spirit
of the people in a time of war,” a payment of ₤50,000 for the
10 year period since 1936, ₤5,000 paid forthwith and ₤1,000
a year for a further 45 years. After this, the Government settled
with Whakatohea for a lump sum payment of ₤20,000.
At the next elections, the Labour Party received the highest
percentage ever of Maori support. The only point made by the
Parliamentary Opposition was to stress that there should be no
elements in the Waikato-Maniapoto Maori Claims Settlement Act
“which could lead to future dispute.”
Second Time: The first major Waitangi Tribunal settlement of
historical confiscation claims was agreed in 1995. Waikato-
Tainui’s claims were settled for a package worth $170 million,
in a mixture of cash and Crown-owned land. The settlement
was accompanied by a formal apology, delivered by Queen
Elizabeth II in person during her 1995 visit to New Zealand. The
Crown apologised for the invasion of the Waikato and the subsequent
indiscriminate confiscation of land. Early newspaper
reports relate that the invasion took place to stop attacks by war
parties and the murder of settlers north of the Waikato River and
attacks on Waikato settlers by ‘Kingites.’ When British forces
crossed the Waikato in response, Maori saw it as an act of war.
Ensuing land confiscations formed the basis of the grievance
cases settled in 1946.
Kaingaroa: Sold and Resold
First Time: Captain Gilbert Mair NZC was a decorated soldier and
surveyor who was well respected by both Maori and Pakeha. In
Taranaki conqueror Chief Te Wherowhero of Waikato became the
first Maori King
1879 the great Kaingaroa Plain, estimated to contain 120,000
acres, came before the Native Land Court. After lengthy deliberations
(around two years) it was awarded to Ngati Manawa,
whose paramount chief Peraniko Tahawai had guided the
surveyors around the boundaries. Captain Mair wrote in detail
the story of the purchase by the Crown of Kaingaroa in 1879 for
what was then a substantial sum of ₤15,000. Mair described the
ceremony at Galatea where the money was handed over and the
land transfer signed. So important was the occasion, the body
of the by then deceased Peraniko was exhumed from his grave
to ’preside’ over the proceedings. The people were so grateful
for the money, they individually offered a total of ₤600 to Mair
in koha. Though sensitive to the customs, in his position he had
to decline.
Mair wrote: “I read over the deed of cession, explaining at
great length its irrevocable nature. I reminded the tribe of the
ancestral name of Ka-ingaroa (the long enduring home),
whereas if they accepted
the money I had brought, it
would henceforth be called
Kainga-poto, (the quickly
disappearing wealth). This
saying of mine has since
become a proverb for all large
sales in the Bay of Plenty… I
strongly urged them to make
adequate reserves, and
eventually, 1700 acres and
three small totara bushes
were cut out, and it’s on one
of these that the carved
house and largest village now
stand…”
Second Time: We have copies of the Deeds of Sale for Kaingaroa
Plain, which then had no planted forests. Mair would have been
astounded if he had known that in June 2009 at Turangi, the
biggest Treaty settlement ever took place, when eight iwi were
given 176,000ha of nine forests, including Kaingaroa, and $280
million cash. The total cost of the claim to the taxpayer was
around $450 million.
But Wait, There’s More!: The Crown Forest Rental Trust was
set up in 1991 with a fund of $25 million for Maori to pay for
legal enquiry into their claims with the Tribunal, including claims
for Kaingaroa Forest. Cumulative rentals for forests paid by the
government to beneficiaries of the Trust until 1997, when figures
were withdrawn from public scrutiny, exceeded $157 million.
The South Island Sold and
Double Compensated
First Time: The Ngai Tahu or ‘Kemp’ Block – the South Island
of New Zealand - was purchased for the Crown in 1848, but iwi
descendents claimed successfully for compensation in 1944
and 1998. The 1944 settlement document states:
From the Final Settlement of the Ngaitahu Claim, 15th December
1944: “Whereas the members of the Ngaitahu Tribe and their
descendents have from time to time made certain claims in
respect of the purchase of the Ngaitahu Block by Mr. Kemp on
behalf of the Crown in the year eighteen hundred and forty-eight:
And whereas the persons now interested in the claims have
agreed to accept the payment of the sum of three hundred thousand
pounds… 2. In settlement of all claims and demands which
have been made on His Majesty’s Government in New Zealand
and for the purpose of releasing and discharging His Majesty’s
said Government from any claims or demands which might hereafter
be made on it with respect of, or arising out of, the purchase
of certain lands in the South Island belonging to the Ngaitahu
Tribe, the purchase aforesaid being that referred to under the
heading of “South Island Claims – Kemp’s Purchase… in each
year for a period of thirty years and no longer, the annual sum
of ten thousand pounds, payable on the first day of April in each
year…” Erua Tirikatene wrote in 1946 while establishing a new
Trust Board for Ngaitahu that “my settlement is a final one.”
The Taranaki claims were settled at the same time, with
preambles stating it was “a Final Settlement.”
As part of the same push to settle claims, Fraser’s Labour
24 elocal
.co.nz
Government settled other outstanding claims with a one-off
payment totalling ₤81,550, plus ₤17,000 per annum. The quid
pro quo was that these settlements were “definitely to end the
redressing of grievances.”
Second Time: In 1998 Ngai Tahu were given $170 million in a
Waitangi Tribunal settlement for the South Island, plus other
concessions including long term leases of land at ‘peppercorn
(minimal) rates.’ Rangitane iwi recently won a claim of $300
million settlement for land, including control of the Wairau Bar, a
valuable archaeological site on DOC land.
The Taranaki Maori Claims Act of 1944 gave full settlement
between the Crown and local tribes, but this was disputed by
various Taranaki iwi. Multiple land claims continued for
Taranaki, despite a further Full and Final Settlement in 1946.
Documentation shows that Taranaki was legally purchased
by the Crown in 1842 from Chief Te Wherowhero of conquering
Waikato tribes.
To the Conquerors, the Spoils
and Double Standards
Maori who had been driven from their homes by inter-tribal war
and returned when they no longer feared for their lives presented
a problem to earlier land settlements. Wishing to be fair, Governor
Hobson asked Protector of Natives George Clarke “what were
the rights of those people displaced by an invading tribe? Did their
rights have precedence over the decision of their vanquishers to
sell land to the Crown?” At the sale of Taranaki by the Waikato
people to the Crown in 1842, he was advised by Clarke: “native
customs throughout the length and breadth of this land has led me
to believe and declare the forfeiture of such right by aborigines so
situated… it is a Maori custom fully established and recognized…”
He added: “It would establish a dangerous doctrine and constantly
expose every title to be questioned by any returned slave who might
assert a former right to the land let the period be ever so remote,
and would prove a source of endless litigation and disagreement
between the two races.”
His words on Maori tradition and expectations were not heeded in
succeeding years as survivors of inter-tribal war returned and tried to
reclaim their previous lands, bringing further conflict with settlers.
Song of Sorrow for the People
When the Treaty of Waitangi was signed, Maori were rapidly on their
way to extinction, their numbers devastated by years of savage
inter-tribal fighting, particularly after the introduction of muskets.
Tribes had lived by the patu (weapon) and were dying by the patu.
It was a merciless way of life. Bullets swung the populace rapidly
toward extinction as the warrior way continued. The practise of utu
(revenge), a high infant mortality rate and vulnerability to introduced
contagious diseases were also sealing their fate. Chiefs who signed
Te Tiriti O Waitangi were influenced by the words of Tamati Waaka
Nene of Ngapuhi who spoke eloquently of the terrible price of intertribal
warfare, urging the chiefs to seek law and order under the
protection of Queen Victoria. The Maori populace was already in
serious decline by 1840, from around 100,000 to just 46,000 in
1870. Tuhawaiki, who applied his moko to the Treaty of Waitangi
expressed his anguish for his people to Rev. George Clarke. His song
of sorrow is recorded in Clarke’s Early Life in New Zealand:
“Look here, Karaka (Clarke) – here and there, and there yonder:
those are all burial places; not ancestral burial places, but those of
this generation. Our parents, uncles, aunts, brothers, sisters, children
– they lie thick around us.
“We are but a poor remnant now, and the Pakeha will soon see us
all die out…The wave which brought Rauparaha and his allies to the
Strait washed him over to the Southern Island. He went through us,
fighting and burning and slaying. At Kaikoura, at Kaiapoi, and other
of our strongholds, hundreds and hundreds of our people fell, hundreds
more were carried off as slaves, and hundreds died of cold
and starvation in their flight. We are now dotted in families, few and
far between, where we formerly lived as tribes: our children are few
and we cannot rear them.
“But we had a worse enemy even than Rauparaha, and that was
the visit of the Pakeha, with his drink and his disease. You think
us very corrupted, but the very scum of Port Jackson shipped as
whalers or landed as sealers on this coast. They brought us new
plagues, unknown to our fathers, until our people melted away…”
Today, a mix of ethnicities has created a whole new people. Many
choose not to be categorised by race. At the last census, 400,000
people ignored the ethnic categories and wrote ‘New Zealander’ in
the ‘other’ category. Those who defined themselves as ‘Maori’ made
up just 14.6% of the population in the 2006 census. Restoring
pride in all things Maori has played a significant role in reviving the
self-determination of a declining race, but, taken to extremes, what
will the ultimate price of that be? Will it continue to be dependence
on welfare and grievance payouts from the people of New
Zealand? Will Maori ever be able to stand on their own feet and
make their way as individuals, as every other New Zealander must?
The present process of compensation is in grave danger of making
that impossible. Some may gain sudden riches, but in the end,
everyone loses.
We see division on grounds of race sponsored by Government
eagerness to gain political support under MMP, opening a further
disastrous Pandora’s Box. To secure support of the Maori party for
its emission trading scheme, the National Government recently
enabled five Maori corporations to re-open their “Full and Final”
settlements. This set a precedence for permanent post-Treaty
assets to be forever eligible for compensation should they be
affected by government changes relating to forestry, tax law or the
exchange rate, making Full and Final settlement impossible.
The present government states their aim is to conclude all
Waitangi Tribunal ‘Full and Final Settlements’ by 2014. It’s all been
said before. History shows that the people of New Zealand are fully
justified in fearing that Treaty Settlement as a long-established
institution is here to stay, as a political bargaining point, to haunt
and divide, and financially burden future generations forever.
Those Who Constantly Look Back
Can Never Go Forward.
Happy Diamond
Jubilee India!
Over 3,000 people gathered at
Manukau’s Telstra Stadium on
Sunday January the 24th to
celebrate the 60th anniversary of India’s
Republic Day. Chief guest was former
Mayor of Manukau Sir Barry Curtis, who
has had a long association with the
Indian community. He unfurled the Indian
fl ag before a parade of colourful groups.
The Indian civilisation had existed peacefully
for thousands of years when the East
India Company gained a foothold in 1600,
starting a spice trade. Colonisation followed,
and along with it came 90 years of
rebellion against the Raj rule. India fi nally
gained independence from the British on
August 15, 1947. The Constitution was
written in English and later translated into
Hindi on January 24, 1950. Its preamble
pledges India to be a “sovereign socialist
secular democratic republic,” with every
citizen guaranteed the right to vote and
fundamental rights protected by a single
integrated judicial system. Republic Day
gives Indians throughout the world an
opportunity to commemorate the sacrifi ces
of those who stood up for independence,
including Mahatma Ghandi, and to celebrate
the tremendous progress made by the
nation since gaining independence.
Enthusiastic Response to
Lucky Shopper Competition
Big Catamaran Prize Won!
Manjit (left) and Harry Singh from Drive Thru Liquor Centre
Pukekohe with Lucky Shopper winner Kirstin MacPherson
Kirstin MacPherson of Pukekohe is all set to “Live the Dream!”
Kirstin is the winner of elocal magazine’s Lucky Shopper Competition
(Jan-Feb editions). Her stunning prize is a day cruise for
herself and 11 friends on the Hauraki Gulf on the 38ft luxury
catamaran ‘Cruczar.’
There was a huge response to the contest, with Kirstin’s lucky
voucher drawn from over 3000 entries by Community Constable
Noel Surrey. The winning ticket was placed in the competition
box at Drive Thru Liquor Centre Pukekohe.
“It’s the first time I’ve ever won anything,” says Kirstin, clearly
blown away by her unexpected good fortune. “Lynette at the
Liquor Centre encouraged me to enter the competition. She
asked if I had the receipt. I never keep receipts, because I’ve
never won anything before. I didn’t believe it when elocal rang
Stem Cell Treatment ‘Amazing’
Three months on from her visit to the clinic in Germany for stem
cell treatment, Megan’s progression is nothing short of amazing.
It’s the little things that are significant to Mike and Jackie,
like being able to call Megan’s name and have her turn her
around to look at them, or Megan running her hands through
her hair, a task that was impossible only six months ago.
Megan’s health has improved greatly as well, from a little girl
who was continuously sick, she now only gets sick about once a
month and her little body is able to fight off the infection faster.
After struggling for years to put on weight, Megan has successfully
achieved this after her treatment.
A second procedure in Germany is essential in order to help
Megan progress further and this is scheduled in July this year.
The Feltons are “almost there” with the costs of the second
trip and treatment, and more contributions will ensure this
vital treatment takes place. Mike and Jackie would like to
say a warm, heart-felt “thanks” to all involved in getting
Megan to Germany for the treatment that has made such
a huge difference to her life. If you would like to help by
Drive Thru Liquor Centre Pukekohe was the major sponsor of
the competition. Manager Harry Singh: “We are delighted that
Kirstin has won. For us at the shop, it’s been very successful,
a different, original concept and really good marketing. We
would be happy to be involved again in an elocal competition
Auckland Super City
By Ganges Singh Q.S.M. J.P
It would seem that the greater Auckland City is a beast that
cannot be stopped.
Franklin is about to be swallowed up, and we stand to lose a particular
identity as well as our special place in the wider aspects
of the region’s control. This has come to be despite the best
efforts of our Franklin Mayor Mark Ball and others who painstakingly
pointed out the pitfalls for our community of a merger.
Can I suggest that the name of Franklin be retained? At least
in any boards that arise from the ashes of our area, something
that is ours can be retained intact. Also, any local assets should
be held in trust, so that local residents can decide in future if
these are to be disposed.
It is surprising that our area is to be divided into three separate
pieces – what is the sense in that for a community that has
a proven record as an innovative
and strong area?
Ministerial decree or not, we
need to preserve some aspects
of Franklin’s past, and at least
salvage something in this new
arrangement. It is important that
the people of Franklin remember
that there will be only one member
from our area in the super
city council. How to select this
member is therefore, of immense
significance, as well as the local
board members.
I have watched this community grow, develop into various significant
ways, always supported by a proud, active region. Any
new board that develops should strive to maintain Franklin’s
uniqueness. We stand to lose everything otherwise.
A married couple in their early 60s was celebrating their 40th
wedding anniversary in a quiet romantic little restaurant. Suddenly
a tiny, yet beautiful little fairy appeared on their table.
She said “For being such an exemplary married couple and for
being loving to each other for all this time, I will grant you each
a wish.”
The wife answered, “Oh, I want to travel around the world with
my darling husband.”
The fairy waved her magic wand and - poof! – two tickets for the
Queen Mary II appeared in her hands.
The husband thought for a moment: “Well, this is all very romantic,
but an opportunity like this will never come again. I’m
sorry my love, but my wish is to have a wife 30 years younger
than me.”
The wife, and the fairy, were deeply disappointed, but a wish
is a wish.
So the fairy waved her magic wand and poof!.. the husband
became 92 years old.
The moral of this story? Men who are ungrateful should remember
that fairies are female!
We received this joke from nine year old Mali-Marie
Newman which she made up herself. We liked your
creativity Mali, so are publishing your joke as well,
The Police
– Looking
After Our
Community
by Community Constable
Noel Surrey
e
PAPAKURA THEATRE COMPANY (INC)
proudly presents
One thing I believe few recruits think about when preparing
to join the Police is the job we often have of informing
relatives when a sudden death has occurred. It is a
job all Police Officers get to do. It is never an experience to look
forward to. No one is ever satisfied afterwards that they have
done it well but it is very easy to make a mess of it.
Sometimes it involves people we know and events that we were
personally involved in. But often it involves people that we have
never met or events that have happened in another part of the
country (or the world). It is not done over the telephone. The local
Police get to pass on the sad news and deal with the initial reaction
face to face. How people react when they receive the news
of the death of a loved one is variable. It ranges from no apparent
reaction to resignation; disbelief to hysteria. I have seen mothers
recoil in horror at the mere sight of a uniformed Police Officer on
the doorstep because their child was not home. They were expecting
the worst. Sometimes our visit was not about anything like that
and it was not hard to calm them down.
My reason for beginning with this very Police perspective is that
while death is ultimately unavoidable for us all it is easier for the
survivors to accept if every precaution has been taken to avoid
stupid risks when outdoors. I am aiming this article at the people
who might be thinking such thoughts as: “She’ll be right.” “It will
be okay just this once” or “I haven’t got time to prepare more
thoroughly.” The silliest one is, “It won’t happen to me.” What
makes you so special?
You are the ones who have actual control over whether or not things
go badly wrong when you are holidaying or enjoying your favourite
recreation. The people waiting at home for you to return do not have
that control. All they can do is give good safety advice (sometimes
called nagging) like, “Don’t forget to wear your life jacket” and ask
searching questions like, “Have you checked the weather report?”
The people at home who are sometimes accused of nagging need
to be listened to even when they don’t get their tone of voice quite
right. They will say that alcohol and other drugs do not mix well with
many things; such as swimming, boating, shooting or driving/riding
anything with a motor. Experience has proved them to be correct.
If you are going to play hard, leave the relaxing with a beer for
after all the toys have been put away and there is no more travel
planned until tomorrow. Good recreation shouldn’t need enhancing
with alcohol. It can be best savoured with a clear head and a body
still capable of feeling pain.
Do have all the fun you can handle but know when to stop (or not
start) so that you will be around next year and still in one piece . There
will usually be another time if you plan well and handle things right.
March 18th is a red letter day for Pukekohe as we
welcome the opening of a new contemporary art
gallery in our area. FRONTROOM is dedicated to
providing a showcase for artists and artisans to
present their work and offer the public the opportunity
to purchase unique and original artworks.
FRONTROOM’s objective is to establish a venue with a point of difference
representing a variety of contemporary art forms and styles.
Running lines of select high quality products will also be available in
keeping with the themes or programmes planned by the curators.
FrontRoom’s themes or programmes will change and rotate on a
regular basis so as to always have fresh new work on show and to
ensure continuing interest for both artists and the public.
The curators, Su Walker, a graduate of Manukau School of Visual
Arts with a Bachelor of Visual Art and Jennifer Stewart, who is
currently in her final year of the same degree, met through a mutual
friend. Their combined talents and interests have fostered a friendship
that allows the two women to collaborate successfully. They
believe that a contemporary art gallery will fill a niche in our area
that will be beneficial to both artists and observers alike.
FrontRoom is intended to be a place of creative interest offering an
alternative source of art work to complment one’s lifestyle.
Looking forward to hearing from you, any comments queries or questions,
please email me.
Are You Meeting
Life’s Challenges
with Energy and
Action? Gil Garchow
Are you trying to find inspiration, the drive and support to do something
differently in your life?
Are you ready to step into being your best?
This is where partnering with a Lifestyle Coach can get you to where
you would like to be.
So what is a Lifestyle Coach? As a coach I consider myself a qualified
supportive partner in my client’s journey; as opposed to a mentor
who tells you the way or a counsellor or therapist who picks you up
when you trip.
Coaching is a very positive experience. It is not about ‘fixing’ ourselves
– it is more enhancing, growing and developing ourselves to
get more focus and fulfilment from our lives.
It is also more than setting goals; (however goals are important as
without goal posts how can you expect to score)? It’s about understanding
that what we think and do affects the results we create. A
Coach can be our champion as we realign ourselves, get us either
back on track or forge a new one. It is about understanding and
developing the ‘who’ of us, the ‘how’ we do things and the ‘what’ of
what we want.
Whether you are an individual or business wanting to find structure,
seek more balance in your life, to turn down your stress, or design
your long term visions into practical short term steps – I invite you
to meet with me for a coffee and talk about how you can really get
what you want.
Available courses:
Reach for the Stars – a practical ‘Goal Getting’ course
resulting in direction in all aspects of our lives. Goals inject
possibility, passion and drive on our journey
Women in Action - A 6 week course for women wishing to gain
more confidence, build self esteem, connect with our intuition, find
purpose and passion, develop positive new habits and direction.
Next month we will explore how coaching can enhance both
success and wellbeing within businesses and organisations.
Good and Bad Fat
By Cees Hekelaar
FAT = BAD. FATTY ACIDS = GOOD.
There’s a lot of talk about good and bad fat. We now know that
it is important to avoid animal fats. Fats that we find primarily
in meat and dairy products.
But just as it is important to avoid these fats, it is equally important to
consume good fats that come from plants and fish.
We commonly know these as Omega 3 and –6 and –9 fatty acids.
They are essential to consume, as we are not able to metabolise them
ourselves.
Omega 3, 6 and 9 essential fatty acids (EFAs) are abundantly present
in Flaxseed Oil and they are important for maintaining optimum health.
EFAs are the main structural components of all cell membranes and
are necessary for the production of prostaglandins, hormone-like
substances, which are beneficial for your:
Skin condition • Cardiovascular health and cholesterol levels
• Circulation • Joint health • Immune system
The presence of plant oils in your diet will transport important
fat-soluble vitamins and minerals into your circulation and cells.
It is clear that EFAs are a most important part of our daily diet to maintain
the body’s ability to defend itself against environmental pollutions and
other influences that may lead to serious diseases. Organically grown
Waihi Bush flaxseed oil provides a highest quality half litre bottle.
The first week take 1 tablespoon in your daily cereal breakfast and from
the 2nd week, 2 tablespoons.
If the taste is not to your liking, it is possible to use capsules.
A German doctor, Dr. Johanna Budwig, has developed a diet based on
adding Flaxseed Oil and low fat cottage cheese, containing sulphur-rich
protein and calcium, to our daily intake.
This diet showed great results, by improving people’s immune system,
in preventing development of cancer, coronary heart disease and skin
disorders.
Other very important EFAs are:
Evening Primrose Oil (EPO), which gives us the fatty acid GLA, most important
for women’s hormonal balance, helping with PMS and Menopausal
disorders. It will also result in a beautiful skin condition.
Fish Oil. Who has not heard of Omega 3 fatty acids EPA and DHA? They
are so well known and well researched for Joint Mobility and Cardiovascular
health. But don’t underestimate their importance for your eyes and
as necessary building blocks and protection of your nervous system.
Due to their instability the EPO and Fish Oil are only available in capsules
and not in bottles like flaxseed oil.
This is only a brief explanation about healthy plant oils. If you have any
more questions on this subject feel free to call my friendly, experienced
and knowledgeable staff, or me on 09 2387806, or see me at the Way
of Life Health Shop, 68 Edinburgh Street, Pukekohe. (Did you know that
we have our own convenient car park at the back entrance, adjacent to
Countdown’s car park)
