Rotary Club of West St. Louis County
In West County, civic-minded individuals,
who are looking for a way to
make a positive difference in their
local community and make friends
across the globe, need look no further
than Rotary.
Or, to be more precise, the Rotary
Club of West St. Louis County, which
serves the communities of Ballwin,
Clarkson Valley, Ellisville, Eureka,
Manchester, Valley Park, Wildwood
and Winchester.
First recognized by Rotary International
in 1950 and then known as the
Rotary Club of Ballwin, the organization
stemmed
from one founded
on Feb. 23, 1905,
by Paul P. Harris
and three of his
friends. The name
Rotary was derived from the early
practice of rotating meetings among
the members’ offices.
Today, the West County organization
is one of over 33,000 clubs
located in more than 200 countries.
Each club meets weekly to determine
its own service activities. The
Rotary Club of West County meets
on Tuesdays at noon at St. John
Lutheran Church, 15800 Manchester
Road in Ellisville. If the month
has a fifth Tuesday, that meeting is
held at a different location,
which is publicized on the
club’s website, westcountyrotary.org.
While clubs worldwide
have concentrated their
efforts on the eradication of
polio, clean water, literacy,
and drug abuse prevention
programs to name a few, the
Rotary Club of West County
is much more up-close and
personal in its service.
“The value of this organization is
being able to give back to the community,”
said Pat McDermott, one of
Rotary’s past presidents.
Recent donations and service
projects include the Ferris Park
Nature Exploration Playground, a
$10,000 donation to the Equine
Assisted Therapy (EAT) organization,
and scholarships and community
awards to local citizens and
businesses.
Despite its emphasis on service, it’s
not the only thing Rotary is known for.

to develop leadership skills and network
with other professionals in the
St. Louis area and beyond.
“For me its building relationships
on a personal level as well as a professional
level,” McDermott said.
“We do have a lot of fun.”
