What’s unique about visual arts
at PUC?
Our northern California location is perfect for
artists. Our proximity to iconic San Francisco and
our location in the culturally rich Napa
Valley help creativity to thrive. Also, our
beautiful natural surroundings — forests,
mountains, and ocean — can’t help but
inspire great art.
Why should I study art at
PUC?
I feel there is a creative revolution
going on at PUC. We have around 100
majors — which is huge at an Adventist
college — and our students are getting internships
and jobs all around the world, including recent
student internships at Dreamworks and Pixar. Our
students have also won major national awards. Most
important, our campus culture embraces creativity;
we encourage creative exploration and encourage
students to develop an independent voice when it
comes to their art. Also, our programs are designed
for both those who want to study visual arts as
a vocation and those who study it as a means of
increasing cultural awareness.
What are visual arts classes like?
We have a curriculum that’s very well designed for
our majors. It helps students understand theory,
history, and practice of their art. All majors start
with Design and Composition I and II classes to
give them a solid foundation of general art theory
and principles. Then each program goes
through several years of core courses in
their areas.
What about projects and
portfolios?
All seniors take a few “capstone” courses
to finish their portfolios and finish their
senior thesis project. For fine art, design,
and photography majors, their thesis
projects are exhibited in a “Senior Thesis
Exhibition” at Rasmussen Art Gallery, our own oncampus
gallery. For film and television majors, their
thesis projects premier at a Student Film Festival
held at a local independent theater each year.
