Four Gemla Side Chairs
Hardwood and laminated wood
Dio, Sweden
Curved continuous back to arm rest over
diagonal pierced wood seats, manufacturer’s
label, ht. 29 in.
Note: Gemla Furniture, a company founded
in Stockholm in 1861 was originally a
manufacturer of wooden toys. After a fire in
1884 the company relocated to Dio, Sweden,
and the toys gave way to the manufacturing
of furniture at the beginning of the 20th
century. From 1910, Gemla became known
for its high-quality line of bentwood furniture
known as Weiner furniture similar to Thonet
and Josef Hoffman and to this day features
a large collection of classical “furniture of the
Vienna era.” In the 1920s and 30s Gemla
introduced tubular steel furniture similar to
that of Marcel Breuer to Sweden, however the
Swedes preferred furniture made of wood,
and that has remained the company’s focus.
In the 50s and 60s Gemla produced furniture
by many famous architects and designers,
such as Poul M. Volther, and a long line
of innovators. The chairs listed reflect
Gemla’s long history and tradition of design,
innovation.
