I have been reading a great book by my 

colleague, Rabbi Ed Feinstein, senior rabbi 

of Valley Beth Shalom in Encino, CA. 

Tough Questions Jews Ask: A Young 

Adult’s Guide to Building a Jewish Life is 

written for young people who have 

questions about God, about being Jewish, 

abo ut o b serving mitzvo t (the 

commandments), and about the meaning of 

life. It is written in a style that will appeal 

to students who are preparing to become 

bar and bat mitzvah, as well as those who 

are already in their teens. And at the same 

time, I think that many adults will find that 

the book answers the questions they have, 

too, and that it is an excellent resource for 

responding to queries from their children. 

In the final chapter of the book, Rabbi 

Feinstein offers an engaging response to a 

young man who asks: ―Why be Jewish?‖ 

It is a question I hear all too often, one 

which many, if not all rabbis have faced. 

Rabbi David Wolpe – another 

Conservative rabbi with a congregation in 

California – wrote a book with that title 

(Why Be Jewish? Henry Holt, 1995) in 

which he shared three answers: to grow in 

soul, to join a people, and to seek G-d. 

Rabbi Feinstein takes a different 

approach. Remember he is writing, 

ostensibly, for a young audience. 

The biggest, most important job you 

have right now is writing the story of 

your life. You are its author, its 

illustrator, its publisher. You decide its 

plot, its themes, its lesson. You get to 

decide what’s going to happen next. 

Some things in your life are beyond 

your control – how tall you’ll be, for 

example. But much of your life’s story 

is up to you to create. You have that 

power. 

If you don’t make the choice to shape 

your life carefully and with wisdom, 

there are forces all around that will do 

it for you. If you don’t live life on 

purpose, you’ll live by accident. The 

sad truth is that most people live by 

accident. They let life “happen” to 

them. And then one day, usually late in 

their years, they wake up to discover 

that they’ve missed all that life offered. 

They missed the chance to have 

dreams and plans and choices. They 

missed the chance to live a life that 

matters. That’s a tragedy. 

Rabbi Feinstein then proposes a 

solution. If you want to avoid the pitfall of 

an ―accidental life‖ rather than a ―purpose 

driven life‖ be a ―hero.‖ 

Be a hero? Is Rabbi Feinstein 

suggesting that a person has to take risks 

with his life, perhaps save the lives of 

others, in order to find fulfillment in life 

and live a life that matters? And if I 

followed such advice would that help me 

answer the question: ―Why be Jewish?‖ 

First, we must understand that a hero 

isn’t only a firefighter, a medic, or a navy 

seal willing to put himself or herself in 

harm’s way for the sake of others. 

The definition of a hero, according to 

Rabbi Feinstein, is someone ―who has 

made his or her life into a symbol of 

something higher and greater. A hero is a 

person whose life matters.‖ 

To quote the Hasidic master Menachem 

Mendel of Kotzk: ―Don’t just learn the 

Torah. Be a Torah!‖ In other words, ―Make 

your whole life into a holy book, a sacred 

story. Make your whole life into a text that 

other people can read and learn from.‖ 

If you want to be a hero, find a cause – 

helping the poor, feeding the hungry, 

tutoring the under-privileged, visiting the 

sick – and devote yourself to it. Make a 

difference in the lives of others. 

This is where the answer to our original 

question - Why be Jewish? - can be found. 

―Judaism,‖ writes Rabbi Feinstein, 

―teaches us how to live the life of a hero. . . 

. being Jewish means accepting the most 

important responsibility there is. Sharing 

God’s dreams and working as God’s 

partner to make the world whole is not 

easy. Mending the world is heroic work. 

It takes a lifetime of great courage and 

energy.‖ 

So why be Jewish? 

Because the ―Torah gives us a blueprint 

plan for building a world that’s whole and 

peaceful.‖ 

Because performing mitzvot helps us 

acquire ―the skills and tools we’ll need to 

repair the world: to bring peace where 

there’s war, to bring healing where there’s 

hurt, to bring hope where there’s despair.‖ 

And as he concludes, Rabbi Feinstein 

reminds us that beyond Torah and 

commandments, being Jewish provides us 

with the opportunity to form critical 

relationships. 

We pray to come close to God and 

get from God the strength and the 

courage to face a world that’ such a 

mess. 

We share a life with a community. 

We remember the experiences of our 

ancestors, sharing their stories, their 

triumphs and their tragedies, so that 

our work of mending the world isn’t 

done alone. 

Why be Jewish? To live a life of 

importance. To be a hero. 

As we approach the festival of Shavuot, 

and prepare to celebrate once again our 

people’s covenant with God, reaffirming 

our allegiance to the Torah which God 

gave us at Mt. Sinai, how will you answer 

the question: Why be Jewish? 

I hope that you will find inspiration for 

living a meaningful life in the Torah and in 

our tradition. I hope that you are ready to 

be a hero. 

I wish you a Chag Sameach – may it be 

for you a joyous holiday! 

While summer is still several months away, we’d like to 

remind you of all the wonderful opportunities Camp Maccabee 

has to offer your children. We are in an air-conditioned facility 

that is created to support age-appropriate activities for 

preschoolers and kindergarten-age children. We have an 

excellent water safety program where your children will have 

the experience of learning all the entry-level skills. You never 

have to worry on rainy days or when it is too hot – our 

experienced counselors always have indoor activities planned.

Message 

Andrea Rosenthal 

It is May, which marks my one-year 

anniversary as President of Temple Sinai. 

WOW, time is flying by. When I reflect on 

my personal life and in my role as a lay 

leader; I have been quite busy and truly 

happy. I have been blessed for the last year 

with an outstanding team from the Executive 

Committee, Board of Directors and the 

Executive Professional Staff. We have a 

few members of the Executive Committee 

who are stepping down, and please indulge 

me as I acknowledge them. Our Executive 

Vice President, Mark Sussman was an outstanding 

confidant and supporter in ways, 

which can’t be counted. Thank you Mark for 

the myriad of phone calls, meetings, and 

unconditional support. Thank you to Beth 

Heyman for always being level headed and 

documenting our meetings so efficiently. 

And to Jon Levine, who had perhaps one of 

the most daunting tasks, thank you for 

helping numerous families so they could be 

members in good financial standing, while 

keeping us within a budget. Bill Kramer, 

Jeff Hampton, Tobey Grand, Sally 

Rosenwasser and Cindy Warkow, thank you 

for your continued commitment and I look 

forward to another year of committed work 

for our congregation. Barbara Rosenau, Alan 

Katz and Andrew Meyer thank you for 

coming to meetings and providing your 

prospective. To those on the Board of 

Directors who are cycling off or choosing to 

no longer serve in this capacity; thank you 

for your dedication to our congregation, contributing 

in meetings and volunteering. And 

last but not least, our outstanding Executive 

Professional Team. I truly feel blessed to 

work with each of you on a daily basis, and 

appreciate how you each contribute to 

creating a wonderful congregation for our 

community. 

Just recently my grandmother, Minerva 

―Minnie‖ Brownstein passed away at the age 

of 92. She was an awesome woman and I 

hope on one of her many visits to Temple 

Sinai you had the opportunity to chat with 

her. Mommom loved Temple Sinai; she 

loved our Rabbi and Cantor, the feel of our 

services, the look of our building and the 

overall ―feeling‖ when she was here. 

Mommom Minnie’s influences were one of 

the many reasons I committed to being 

President and have enjoyed the process so 

much. Mommom had many ―isms‖ which 

she would share and some of these are what 

have guided me for the last 40 + years of my 

life, and most significantly this last year. I 

thought I would share some of these with 

you. I believe they will make you smile, 

laugh, question and perhaps help you to 

volunteer and take one more step toward 

enhancing Temple Sinai. 

This to shall pass. 

You can get more out of sugar 

than vinegar. 

What is your objective? 

Don’t have expectations. 

Kill them with kindness. 

Shalom in the home. 

Don’t bad mouth anyone. 

Besides that Mrs. Lincoln what 

else is new? 

Always be positive. 

Don’t ask questions you don’t 

want the answer to. 

Continue to grow the tribe. 

I look forward to another year as 

President and working with each of you as 

we educate our children and ourselves, grow 

our membership, take care of one another 

and our community, and so much more.

Desk 

Edwin Altman 

I hope all of you enjoyed a beautiful 

Pesach with family and friends. 

Our office staff has been extremely busy 

over the past months providing support to a 

large and varied number of exciting events 

here at Temple Sinai. A sampling of those 

events included the production of ANNIE, 

our Scholar in Residence weekend, the 

Daddy Daughter Dance, the Purim Carnival, 

Hazak’s Hot Dog and Movie Night, Girls 

Night Out for Bingo and Camp Fair. All of 

these events required advance planning, 

communications, food preparation, storage, 

room setup, cleanup and loads of details to 

be worked out. The success of these events 

represents a wonderful partnership between 

our very talented volunteers who sponsor 

and run them together with the office, 

accounting, and custodial staffs who devote 

so much energy and attention as well. 

As you can imagine, working together 

with Committee Chairs and numerous 

volunteers, we are currently devoting 

significant resources to the upcoming 

Cantor’s Celebration Weekend which is just 

a few weeks away. This weekend is not 

only an opportunity to thank our very special 

Cantor but also a way to participate in 

Temple Sinai’s major fundraising event for 

this year. Having gotten a sneak preview of 

what’s ahead I can tell you that it will be an 

extraordinarily enjoyable and delightful 

musical celebration. 

Our building’s infrastructure continues to 

get much attention. Under the guidance of 

Gil Beyda, Chair of the Technology 

Committee we are moving forward with a 

number of exciting projects. Working with 

Adam Warkow we have launched a major 

project to migrate to a new server platform 

which will provide us with a more reliable, 

robust and secure computing environment. 

We are also exploring moving to a new 

telephone technology which will not only 

reduce costs but enable new functionality as 

well. Finally, a critical project being lead by 

Nathan Relles and Howard Roth has been 

launched to reconcile the many different 

databases that we currently have containing 

contact information for our members. 

Over the Pesach break we dedicated 

much of our maintenance time to the 

cleaning and fix up of the school wing. We 

are already making similar plans for the 

summer months where we have a window of 

opportunity for improvement and repair 

work throughout the building. 

Finally, although it seems way too early, 

planning has already begun for the High 

Holidays. 

With Shavuot only a month away, I wish 

you all a Chag Sameach with loads of 

wonderful cheesecake recipes to sample and 

a delightful spring season!

Sisterhood

President 

It is hard to believe that my 2 years as 

President have come to a close. It has been 

such a wonderful experience. I have had 

the opportunity to work with so many 

people and to get to know so many of you 

throughout these two years. I can certainly 

say that I feel much more comfortable in 

my own synagogue. I want to thank 

everyone for supporting Sisterhood and all 

that we do and for helping me along the 

way. What did I gain from these two years 

as President? A sense of accomplishment, 

new friendships, new learning opportunities 

but most of all was the interaction with all 

the wonderful women whose unwavering 

commitment to Sisterhood enables us to 

accomplish a full calendar year of 

programming, mitzvah projects, 

educational opportunities, shared 

spirituality and lots of camaraderie, all 

while raising significant funds for Temple 

Sinai. We have collectively made a 

significant impact on our synagogue with 

our hard work. 

There are so many women who help in 

so many ways. Our Executive Board has 

12 members and our Board has 50 

members. For two years I was able to call 

on these women to accomplish tasks large 

and small. No matter who I called, and 

believe me there were many, everything 

w a s h a n d l e d e f f i c i e n t l y a n d 

effectively. Sisterhood runs like a well 

oiled machine. We all have other 

commitments in our lives, jobs and family, 

but each and every member sets aside time 

for Sisterhood even if just to attend events 

throughout the year 

We had a beautiful Installation of our 

new Sisterhood President, Sara Wenger, 

and the new Sisterhood Board. I personally 

look forward to Sara's leadership and her 

personal vision for our Sisterhood. Cantor 

Freedman added to the festivities of the 

evening with his singing and Rabbi 

Wohlberg officially installed Sara. Thank 

you to Cindy Horowitz who planned 

the evening and to Susan Teich, Ellen 

Spear and Soroosh Michaels for setting up 

the room and providing the delicious 

deserts. 

I'd also like to thank Ed Altman, Edy 

Israel and Suzanne Teleha for their 

tremendous help during these past two 

years. They have made my job much easier 

than I could ever have thought possible. I 

look forward to attending all the fabulous 

Sisterhood events and programming as a 

Past President. I am joining a very 

esteemed club of past Presidents and I am 

so very proud to do so. So I leave 

Sisterhood confidently, happily and full of 

satisfaction. Thank you all for these past 

two years. It has been an extremely 

rewarding and memorable experience. To 

quote my son, Zachary, "It's the most fun 

you never want to have again". It was an 

honor and a privilege to serve as 

y o u r P r e s i d e n t .

Passing It On 

So much of our religious observance 

revolves about memory. Throughout our 

Jewish year we associate events with 

historical as well as personal recollections. 

As an example of the historical vein we need 

only to turn the pages of the calendar back 

twice to recall Pesach and its multifaceted 

meaning to our people and our deliverance. 

At the same time we recall the personal 

aspects, the particular family customs that 

make the holiday meaningful to each of us 

in our own way. 

As another example of the power of 

memory we flip back only one month to the 

observance of Yom Hashoah. On this day of 

observance it is incumbent upon us to recall 

what was perhaps the saddest era of our 

existence, the Shoah. We mark this day by 

lighting candles and reading the names of 

mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers, and 

children who perished. Each year on this day 

we have asked those who survived to recall

their experiences, to tell us their stories. We 

want to know what their lives were like 

during World War II. Yet, as we 

acknowledge that our story tellers are 

dwindling in numbers, we question who will 

carry on this obligation to ―never forget‖. It 

is our children. 

In her presentation at Temple Sinai on 

May 1 st , Dr. Judith A. Vogel of Stockton 

College brilliantly conveyed that message. 

Speaking directly to the children who were 

in the sanctuary to observe the annual 

Holocaust commemoration, Dr. Vogel 

explained that the most severe edicts 

inflicted by the Nazis were aimed at 

undermining the welfare of the children: 

curtailing access to food, limiting medical 

care, denying education. These tyrants 

understood that the survival of a people rests 

with its youth. It still does. 

As we make such speakers available, 

recalling the history of our people, we begin 

to create a memory bank for our children. In 

this way, they will be equipped to 

understand and to pass on the survivors’ 

stories when they are no longer with us. 

We are also ensuring our future by 

providing positive learning experiences that 

incorporate the beauty of Judaism. As much 

as we want them to ―never forget‖, as much 

as we feel that we must transmit the sad 

historical events of our people, we want 

even more to convey the message that the 

happiness within Judaism far exceeds the 

sadness. We strive to create an 

ever-increasing awareness of the joy and fun 

and wisdom and shalom and sense of 

community that exist within Judaism. 

Providing Shabbat and holiday 

experiences. Encouraging interest in our 

customs. Accompanying children to 

programs and services. Developing a ―gutta 

neshama‖. These are means of creating 

Jewish memories. These are steps to 

achieving ―never again‖. 

You may ask, ―What does all of the 

above have to do with Hazak?‖ My reply is, 

―Everything!‖ Because who is better 

furnished with time and love than the 

grandparent to help nurture such intentions 

within a family? Hazakniks are at the front 

of the line in that effort.

Well, it was a good year for HAZAK. 

There was our recent trip to the Holocaust 

Museum at Stockton State College. Earlier, 

we enjoyed Hot Dog Movie Night which 

was both informative and entertaining. 

Then there was our spiritual Shabbat in the 

Sukkah. And in March, we took a peek into 

the life of one of our opera greats, Luciano 

Pavarotti. All this and Eleanor Roosevelt 

too. Yes, it was a good year. 

We must give kudos to our president, 

Betsy Lewinson and her hard working staff 

for bringing on an outstanding year of 

programming. Lots of behind the scenes 

sweat and toil to produce a smooth as silk 

operation. Betsy has set high standards and 

one can only hope next year will be as good 

as this one. 

Oh, lest I forget, June brings back an old 

favorite, Stu Weitz. If you were at last 

year’s concert, you know how terrific Stu 

and friends were. He had us jumping in the 

aisles, well, maybe not quite jumping, but 

definitely foot tapping at the least. It is a 

program not to be missed.

REMEMBER US? 

Jewish Family Living 

For the next few months, we will be running archive pictures in the 

Temple Sinai News. Do you recognize of these ladies? 

No sooner does Pesach start, on the second day to 

be exact, before we begin to look forward to 

Shavuoth. We count the omer in anticipation. On 

Pesach we are freed, and on Shavuoth we receive 

the commandments that bind us to Gd. What is the 

message? 

The message, the lesson is truly beautiful. 

Freedom doesn’t come without strings. To be 

truly free, we need to have guidelines, limits that 

keep us healthy, happy, and fulfilled and allow 

those around us to do the same. 

This is the perfect holiday for confirmations. 

Our confirmands stand before the congregation to 

affirm their personal message of the mitzvoth. 

What a wonderful milestone for the confirmands, 

their families, and the congregation. Mazal Tov to 

us all. 

At home Shavuoth is complete only after 

having my Baba’s blintzes—cheese, cherry or 

prune. For generations these blintzes and sour 

cream have been the taste of Shavouth. Chag 

Sameach!

Preschool 

Although April was a short month, the 

preschool was abuzz with activity and 

excitement. Our students heard and 

reenacted the Passover story, created many 

of the ritual objects used during a seder, 

learned songs, and explored the Hagaddah. 

On April 15 th , the children invited their 

families to join us at school for seders lead 

by Rabbi Wohlberg and Cantor Freedman. 

The preschool families also came together 

on April 8 th for a Family Shabbat Dinner 

followed by our monthly Shabbat 

Happening. 

The end of the school year is quickly 

approaching! During the month of May, 

our teachers and students will be celebrating 

Israeli Independence Day with a schoolwide 

simulated trip to Israel. The children 

will also honor and celebrate their Mother’s, 

and we are planning our end of the year 

activities. 

The proceeds from the Annual Preschool 

Bingo fundraiser have been tabulated and it 

was a resounding success. Many thanks to 

Jane Harnick, the fundraiser chairperson! 

We would like to thank Barbara and John 

Rosenau for their generous donation of a 

brand new commercial-grade vacuum 

cleaner for the preschool! 

Early registration for the 2011-2012 school 

year was very successful. Spots are still 

available in each age group and we are 

excited that we are able to offer extended 

daily hours throughout the program. The 

Ann Newman Preschool is now open at 

7:30am daily and programming is available 

until 6:00pm Monday through Thursday 

(4:00pm on Friday). 

Please join us for our final Shabbat 

Happening of the school year (featuring the 

2 year olds) on May 13th at 7pm. 

Registration continues for our fun-filled and 

nurturing summer camp!

Makor- The Twisted Bingo had cool and unique twists on 

playing the game of BINGO! Eighteen kids came together 

and had lunch and then participated in BINGO. There were 

laughs, ahhhh's, oooo's and BINGOS! We played over 15 

games and everyone became a winner and the prizes 

were substantial and the kids were excited by them! There 

were big winners and little winners but all had a piece of the 

action! Some of the games included: original/ typical 

Bingo, Patterned Bingo, and Active Bingo -which had the 

kids exercising. One of the biggest highlights was when we 

played the Real Life Size interactive Bingo board- the kids 

were the numbers! Very Cool! 

Kadima- The Israeli Iron Chef was so much fun! There 

were 20 children and 2 wonderful parent volunteers - Cindy 

Warkow and Karen Israel taking on this challenge. We also 

had the pleasure of having Andy Markowitz from Camp 

Ramah there to educate us on the background of the 

different Jewish cultures. The kids participated in a 

cook-off like None other! There were three teams that were 

responsible for created highly demanding but yet FUN 

recipes. We had recipes from Ashkenazi recipes, Moroccan 

recipes, Ethiopian recipes and Yemenite recipes. We made 

Israeli Salad, Matzo and Cottage Cheese Pudding, Haroset, 

Mandelbrot, Moroccan Couscous & Veggies, Cucumber 

and Pepper , Hummus and Toasted Pita Chips/Bread, Dabo 

Kolo Cookies and Skashuksha. Wow -what activity and 

everyone had many jobs to do! Watch out Rachel Ray and 

Master Chef Curtis Stone!

First-ever Daddy B’nai Daughter Mitzvah Dance a Huge Success

Michael is a 7th grader at Sandy Run 

Middle School. In his spare time he 

enjoys shooting hoops, making videos and 

listening to tunes on his ipod. He has a 

new business called Michael’s 

Masterpieces where he uses his creative 

talents to pop out unique balloon 

creations. We are all very proud of him 

and look forward to his Bar Mitzvah. 

For Mike’s Mitzvah project he decided to 

visit the Abramson Center for Jewish 

Life. When he would go there to visit the 

residents he would bring his case of 

balloons. He made unique balloon 

sculptures for everyone he encountered. 

Sometimes he would greet a young child 

that was crying, that was until he handed 

them one of his creations. It was amazing 

to watch a child wipe his tears only to be 

replaced by a great big smile. Mike 

enjoyed hearing all the stories that the 

residents would share with him. 

Mike shares his simcha with his proud 

parents, Lori & Eric, his sisters Dani and 

Morgan, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and

Daniel is a 7 th grade student at Sandy Run 

Middle School. He began his Jewish 

education at Temple Sinai’s Anne 

Newman Preschool and also attended 

Camp Maccabee for three years. 

Daniel spends his summers at Camp 

Nock-a-Mixon. He enjoys playing 

basketball, baseball, and tennis and has a 

talent for Magic. 

For Daniel’s Mitzvah Project, he cooked 

dinner for the families staying at the 

Philadelphia Ronald McDonald House, 

each time inviting other families to join 

him to share in the experience. Daniel 

would roam around the dining room 

performing various card tricks for the 

families bringing smiles to their faces.

Jordan is a 7 th grade student at Sandy Run 

Middle School and attends Temple Sinai 

Religious School. Jordan loves to play 

sports, especially basketball and soccer. 

When he is not playing sports, he loves to 

cheer on the Eagles and Sixers. Jordan 

likes to spend time with his family and 

friends, travel, listen to music, and read. 

For Jordan’s Bar Mitzvah project, Jordan 

wanted to raise money to help children 

who are sick. He sold water bottles on the 

boardwalk last summer and was able to 

donate money to Children’s Hospital of 

Philadelphia, and to The George Fund, a 

pediatric hospice care fund. Jordan also 

helped prepare and serve dinner for 

families at The Ronald McDonald house 

in Philadelphia. Jordan’s Mitzvah 

projects were rewarding and he would 

like to continue to help others. 

Jordan shares his simcha with his proud 

parents, Ruth and Allen, his brother Andy, 

sister Jenna, his grandparents, 

great-grandmother ,aunts, uncles, cousins 

and friends.

Jablon 


Elle is a 7 th grade student at Sandy Run 

Middle School. She began her Jewish 

education at Adath Jeshrun Pre-school in 

Elkins Park. She continued on at Temple 

Sinai Religious School when she entered 

kindergarten. 

Elle enjoys hanging with her friends, 

along with playing tennis and softball. 

She also enjoys skiing (water and snow). 

She has attended Camp Timber Tops in 

the Poconos for the past 3 years and can’t 

wait to go back this summer. 

For Elle’s Mitzvah project, she created 

and sold bracelets for the Ronald 

McDonald House. The bracelets are 

made from duct tape and decorated with 

jewels. Elle wants to help families with 

the cost of staying at the house. 

Elle will be celebrating her Bat Mitzvah 

with her parents Liz and Clark, her 

brother Asher, along with Nana Roberta 

Yecies, grandparents Myra and Bert 

Jablon, and all of her Aunts, Uncles, 

cousins and friends.

Adam Borisoff, son of Lisa and Donny 

Borisoff will become a Bar Mitzvah on 

Saturday June 4th, 2011. He is a seventh 

grade student at Sandy Run Middle 

School. He likes to play sports including 

baseball and basketball for the intramural 

Upper Dublin league, and football for the 

middle school. He also likes video games, 

piano, and most of all acting. He has 

appeared in several plays both at school 

and Temple Sinai. 

For his mitzvah project Adam wanted to 

do something that would involve his two 

younger brothers. He chose to use his 

piano skills and put on several 

mini-concerts along with his brothers at 

local nursing homes. It was a great 

experience for not only Adam, but also 

for his brothers to share in this mitzvah as 

an experience they will always 

remember. 

Adam is looking forward to sharing his 

special day with his parents, his brothers, 

his grandparents, his aunts, uncles, 

cousins, and friends.

Lindsey is a 7 th grade student at Sandy 

Run Middle School. She began her 

Jewish education at the Ann Newman 

Preschool and she has been attending the 

Religious School since Mechina. For 

Lindsey’s Bat Mitzvah Project she made 

baked goods and delivered them to the 

residents at the Abramson Center. She 

enjoyed delivering treats and getting to 

learn a little bit more about the residents 

each time. Lindsey enjoys hanging out 

with her friends, shopping, cooking and 

reading. Lindsey loves spending her 

summers with friends at Camp Saginaw. 

Lindsey celebrates this special day with 

her parents, Ellen and Rob, her sister 

Emily and her brother Scott, her 

grandmother Barbara Stone, her 

grandparents Sandy and Bill Schlackman 

and her extended family and friends. 

As Lindsey celebrates becoming a Bat 

Mitzvah she will be the fifth generation to 

read from the Schlackman Family Torah. 

Lindsey’s great-great-great grandfather 

was a scribe who lived in Poland during 

World War I. Her ancestors kept the 

Torah hidden while troops occupied 

Poland. In 1923, Jacob Schlackman 

brought the Torah to the United States. It 

was later inherited by Sol Schlackman, 

who Lindsey is named after, and it resided 

in Queens, NY. Later, it was handed 

down to Lindsey’s grandfather, Bill 

Schlackman and it remained in 

Oceanside, NY. The Torah is now kept in 

Congregation Or Atid in Massachusetts, 

where Marc Schlackman, Lindsey’s uncle 

is a member. The Torah is graciously on 

loan to Temple Sinai for the occasion of 

Lindsey’s Bat Mitzvah. We are truly 

honored to share this sacred scroll that 

links generation to generation with our 

congregation.

Sisters Isabelle and Sophia Beyda have chosen to celebrate their Bat 

Mitzvahs together on Sunday, June 12, 2011. Having studied their 

Jewish heritage at Temple Sinai since pre-school, they will combine their 

B'not Mitzvah and have their service and celebration at Talamore Country 

Club officiated by ―Uncle‖ Rabbi Aaron Benson of Congregation Beth 

Meier. All four Beyda girls did their religious studies at Temple Sinai 

since pre-school and feel very blessed to be part of such a wonderful 

congregation. 

Isabelle is a 7 th grade student and Sophia a 6 th grade student at Sandy Run 

Middle School. Both girls have been on the UDJAA Cheerleading 

competition team for years. They are very dedicated to their sport, which 

they spend 6 months of the year working on with great passion. Isabelle 

also enjoys softball in the spring and all year long both girls have fun 

taking dance classes at IDA. Isabelle is looking forward to Camp 

Canadensis this summer and Sophia is looking forward to Pine Forest 

Camp. 

For their mitzvah project they help lead Shabbat Services at Dresher 

Estates most every Friday evening since last June. The girls very much 

enjoy spending time with the residents, celebrating their Jewish heritage 

and laughs and hugs with Flossie Albert. Isabelle and Sophia would also 

like to remind everyone to sign-up to be Organ Donors. When their 

friends go to get their drivers license in a few short years, they would 

appreciate it if they would check the box ―yes‖ to be organ donors. and 

encourage people to check out www.organdonorawareness.org.

Great Grandmother, mommom Minnie. Mommom Minnie loved

services and Simchas.

Leo and Phil Massey are 7 th graders at Sandy Run Middle 

School. Leo and Phil are volunteering at the Jewish Relief 

Agency delivering boxes of food for their bar mitzvah project. 

Leo is involved in photography, Student Council, plays the 

drums and is currently playing baseball. 

Phil is active in Student Council and plays guitar. Both of 

them started rowing in crew last summer and will row again 

this summer. 

Leo and Phil enjoy following the stock market playing 

basketball, swimming, the beach, and video games. 

They live at home with their mother, father and older brother, 

Max as well as their adorable dog, Joey who was the star of 

the play production at Temple Sinai’s ―Annie‖. 

B’nai Torah 

Temple Sinai students who continue their 

Jewish education after becoming B’nai 

Mitzvah are invited to return to the 

bimah to read from the Torah and are 

considered Ben or Bat Torah. We honor 

them and their parents for their dedication 

to their Jewish studies and thank them for

Daniel is a 7 th grade student at Sandy Run 

Middle School. His favorite subject is 

math. He is an excellent student who 

enjoys learning. Daniel is an avid chess 

player. He enjoys athletics, hiking and 

plays on the Upper Dublin Township 

Travel Soccer Team. Also, he is a runner 

on the Sandy Run Middle School Track 

Team. Daniel plays the saxophone and is 

a member of the Sandy Run Middle 

School Band. 

Daniel began his Jewish education in the 

Ann Newman Preschool and has continued 

his studies at Temple Sinai. His mitzvah 

project was at Brandywine Assisted 

Living where he brought joy to a retired 

math professor by challenging him in 

chess. 

Daniel continues a family tradition of 

having simchas at Temple Sinai-his 

mother’s Bat Mitzvah, parents’ wedding, 

brother’s Bar Mitzvah, and sister’s Bat 

Mitzvah were at Temple Sinai. Daniel

Cissy Plotnick Preschool Scholarship Fund 

The Cissy Plotnick Preschool Scholarship Fund was established as a tribute to Cissy 

Plotnick’s years of service in the Ann Newman Preschool of Temple Sinai. The 

Scholarship funds, which will be available beginning in the 2011-2012 school year, 

will help offset preschool tuition costs for families who demonstrate a significant financial 

need and would like to send their children to Temple Sinai’s Preschool. Applications 

are welcome from both Temple Sinai members and nonmembers. 

All donations to the Scholarship Fund, small or large, are appreciated. Donations to the 

fund will be accepted at any time. To donate to the Scholarship Fund to help others, 

simply go online at www.tsinai.com under the Contributions tab, check the Cissy 

Plotnick Scholarship Fund and fill in your donation amount. Or contact the accounting

Applications for Scholarship funds for the 2011-2012 school year are due May 1, 2011.

When there’s a death in the family, decisions tend to be colored by grief, 

not governed by reason. You can save your family this unnecessary 

stress by purchasing your gravesite now and prearranging your funeral. 

Buying a cemetery plot is a decision you can make today for a time 

when your family must go on without you or a loved one. In order to 

address our congregants’ needs, Temple Sinai purchased 1000 grave 

sites at nearby King David Memorial Park in Bensalem. These are 

available to members and their families at a reasonable price, 

substantially less than at other cemeteries.

Shavuot: The Gift that Keeps on Giving 

The following article is excerpted from writings by Rabbi Jerome Epstein originally written for www.uscj.org 

The three Pilgrimage festivals (shalosh 

r'galim) are marked by distinct symbols 

and elaborate celebrations: Sukkot by lulav 

and etrog and by dwelling in the sukkah; 

Pesah by matzah, maror, four cups of wine 

and an extravagant seder; and Shavuot by... 

cheese blintzes? Why does Shavuot -- 

which marks an event as momentous as the 

giving of the Torah -- lack a substantive 

symbol and corresponding ritual? We 

can learn a great deal from this seeming 

omission. In fact, to identify Shavuot with 

a fixed symbol would misrepresent the 

essence of the holiday. 

We know that Shavuot -- z'man matan 

toratenu -- is associated with the revelation 

at Sinai. Yet we recall the giving of the 

Torah not only on Shavuot but every morning, 

in the brakhot recited before Torah 

study. We also make reference to it in reciting 

an aliyah on being called to the Torah. 

The wording of these blessings is significant. 

We bless God who "gave" (past 

tense) the Torah and we also bless God 

Who "gives" (present tense) the Torah. It is 

this ongoing revelation that gives life to 

halakhah. 

While Kohelet teaches that "there is 

nothing new under the sun," each generation 

of Jews faces challenges and unique 

situations that could not possibly have been 

foreseen by our ancestors at the time the 

Torah was received. From the earliest days, 

when Moses was called upon to resolve the 

questions posed by the daughters of Zelophehad 

regarding inheritance, to our own 

time, when rabbis must address halakhic 

challenges posed by accelerating technology, 

Jews have continued in their efforts to 

discern God's will in a changing world. 

There are numerous challenges which 

we face today as a people committed both 

to growth and to tradition. Happily, Jewish 

teachings are rich in values, insights, and 

sources that help to inform and direct 

consideration of the "new" issues that arise 

on regular basis. Indeed, the Conservative 

Movement was founded precisely to confront 

the challenges of modernity using all 

the resources and knowledge at our disposal 

while keeping both feet firmly rooted 

in the halakhic process. 

The Torah was given at Sinai; the Torah 

is given daily. That is the message of 

Shavuot. The Rabbis have taught that not 

only the Jews actually at Sinai, but all future 

generations of Jews, stood at the foot 

of the mountain to receive the Torah. As 

God continues to give the Torah and to 

reveal His Divine will, we have a 

corresponding obligation to receive it. 

While Shavuot may not have one physical 

symbol, it does have a distinctive ceremony 

-- tikun leyl Shavuot -- in which we 

spend an entire night devoted to Torah 

study. In this way, we reunite once again at 

Sinai and affirm our obligation to carry the 

Torah forth now and forever. 

The Why’s Of Shavuot 

Eating Dairy Food - Since most other 

Jewish holidays are drenched in brisket and 

chicken soup, the tradition to eat dairy on 

Shavuot comes as a welcome change. There 

are many, many reasons offered for this 

custom. 

Once the Jews accepted the Torah, 

they be came obligated in the laws 

of kashrut. But since they were not 

yet familiar with the laws regarding 

animal slaughter, they ate dairy. 

Receiving the Torah was a form of 

rebirth. We celebrate this newness by 

consuming baby food. Namely, milk. 

Shavuot coincided with the time 

when the lambs and calves born in 

the spring would be suckling. 

Therefore an abundance of dairy 

products were available. 

Legend has it that the Jewish people 

were at Sinai for so long that all their 

milk soured and turned into cheese. 

In the Torah the Jewish people are 

promised a "Land flowing with milk 

and honey." Dairy meals recall this 

lyrical description of Israel. 

The Hebrew word for milk, chalav, 

has the numerical value of 40, 

symbolizing the number of days 

Moses was on Mt. Sinai. Chalav is 

spelled chet (numerical value, 8), 

lamed (30), and vet (2). 

Tikkun Leil Shavuot - Midrashic legends 

scold the Jewish people for sleeping the 

night before they received the Torah. 

Apparently God had to sound a shofar blast 

and bring thunder and lightning to wake 

them up. This is one reason why 16 th 

century kabbalists in Safed, Israel, created 

Tikkun Leil Shavuot. Originally the Tikkun 

consisted of readings from the bible, the 

talmud and the kabbalah, which would be 

studied all night long. 

From another perspective, receiving the 

Torah at Sinai was like a marriage between 

God and the Jewish people – with Moses as 

matchmaker and the Torah as the ketubah, 

marriage certificate. Like an antsy bride or 

groom, we have trouble falling asleep the 

night before our wedding. To symbolically 

prepare ourselves we learn Torah to 

review the highlights of our sacred 

relationship.

Spring is in the air and the scouts of Troop 

665 are on the move again with new scouts 

and great trips. In the spirit of Dor le Dor, 

older scouts move on while younger boys 

start their own scouting adventures. The 

boys of Troop 665 never sit still – among 

many activities this spring the Troop went 

up, up and away on a visit to McGuire Air 

Force Base. 

The troop welcomed new scouts and 

their parents to the Troop 665 family – 

Harrison Fink, Caleb Goldberg, Marc 

Goldberg, Phillip Goldberg, Brian 

Gottlieb, and Matt Shen. Some of the boys 

came from Cub Scout packs, while others 

are new to scouting. Scouts and leaders 

from Troop 665 participated in the Cub 

Scout crossover ceremonies to help the 

boys ―cross over‖ from Cub to Boy Scouts. 

All are enthusiastically working on their 

Tenderfoot achievements, enjoying troop 

trips and meetings, and having lots of fun 

with scouting. 

The United States Air Force hosted the 

troop for a unique trip to McGuire Air 

Force Base in March. The Air Force went 

above and beyond to welcome the boys 

and show them the workings of the base. 

Highlights included actually landing a 

Boy Scouts 

DC-10 in a flight simulator, visiting the 

control tower during regular operations, 

observing the radar control center that 

controls all military and civilian flights in 

the Central New Jersey area, and touring a 

C-17 Globemaster transport plane, the 

largest transport aircraft in the entire Air 

Force fleet. The experience was absolutely 

fantastic and Troop 665 extends an ―eagle 

sized‖ thank you to the Air Force for their 

hospitality! The troop has been invited 

back for a future visit to see more of the 

Air Force operations at the Air Force base. 

Some of the boys (and adults who are 

young at heart!) took advantage of the 

warm weather and had a blast with a 

weekend trip to the Knoebels amusement 

park in Elysburg, PA. Being scouts, they 

camped in the area and visited the Cabelas 

outdoor store in the way home. Everyone 

came home with lots of smiles. In 

February, the troop stayed at the ―Hawk 

Mountain Hilton.‖ Actually, they slept in 

rustic cabins at the Hawk Mountain Scout 

Reservation, but even Scoutmaster Dan 

Fein reported that the accommodations 

were the most luxurious he had ever 

experienced at a scout camp. The boys 

enjoyed the winter landscape and practiced 

cold weather hiking and outdoor skills, ate 

great camp meals and slept warm and dry 

in their luxurious accommodations. 

Winter would not be complete without 

the Klondike Derby in January. At the 

annual event, scouts demonstrate various 

outdoor and scout skills while pulling a 

fully loaded sled around a prepared course. 

This year the weather cooperated and there 

was a good base of snow to add realism – 

and difficulty - to the event! Other recent 

activities included a family ski trip, family 

bowling night, rifle shooting outing (where 

the boys were given instruction on the 

proper handling of firearms as well the 

opportunity to shoot at targets), and work 

on rank advancement. 

Cub Scouts is open to all boys ages 7- 

10 and Boy Scouts is open to all boys ages 

11-17. In recognition of Temple Sinai's 

sponsorship, Troop 665 observes kosher on

Temple Sinai Men' Club and Temple Sinai 3 played in the annual Temple Sinai Classic on Monday May 2, 2011. Both teams are long-time 

teams in the Delaware Valley Synagogue League. 

Rabbi Wohlberg was invited to throw out the ceremonial first pitch. It was a pitcher's duel that favored Temple Sinai Men's Club 3-0.

Blueberry Blintz Souffle

1/4 cup butter or margarine, softened 

1/3 cup sugar 

6 eggs 

1 1/2 cups sour cream 

1/2 cup orange juice 

1 cup all-purpose flour 

2 teaspoons baking powder 

1 dash ground cinnamon 

FILLING: 

2 cups small curd cottage cheese 

1 (8 ounce) package cream cheese, softened 

2 egg yolks 

1 tablespoon sugar 

1 teaspoon vanilla extract 

BLUEBERRY SYRUP: 

1 (15 ounce) can blueberries 

1 tablespoon cornstarch 

1/2 cup corn syrup 

1/2 teaspoon lemon juice 

Directions 

Dash salt 

In a mixing bowl, cream butter and sugar. Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Beat in sour cream and orange 

juice. Combine flour and baking powder; stir into egg mixture. Set aside. Combine filling ingredients in a small mixing bowl; beat 

until blended. Pour half of the batter into a greased 13-in. x 9-in. x 2-in. baking dish. Top with filling and remaining batter. Bake, 

uncovered, at 350 degrees F for 40-50 minutes or until a knife inserted near the center comes out clean. Meanwhile, for syrup, 

drain blueberries, reserving juice; set berries aside. In a saucepan, combine cornstarch, corn syrup, lemon juice, salt, cinnamon and 

reserved blueberry juice until smooth. Bring to a boil over medium heat; boil and stir for 2 minutes or until thickened. Add 

blueberries; heat through. Serve warm with the souffle.
