Local hero
The compact U 20 rounds off the Unimog range in a big way. Users among municipal
utilities, in particular, are finding it highly flexible, efficient and comfortable.
The U 20 is finding favour among many local
authorities. Users of predecessor models
affirm that it represents a technical step
forward. And those with experience of
competitor products usually attest that the
suppos edly “mini” option is a step ahead in
terms of engineering, flexibility and ride
comfort. Customers readily accept that the
U 20 costs more, “because the Unimog can do
much more, compared to its many competitors,
than is reflected by the difference in
price”, as one user points out.
For many local authorities the U 20 is
replacing a predecessor model. Although
there is barely room in their budgets for
a Unimog, municipal utilities and gardening
and landscaping companies, as the classic
users, are choosing the U 20 as a safe bet and
as a means of fending off rising repair costs.
Just how flexible the compact unit can be
in municipal works applications, especially,
has already been demonstrated in a wide
range of applications. Among its outstanding
attributes are its high payload and axle load
Hera Maintenance
THE PIPELINE SPECIALIST
frequently carries out work for
the petrochemicals industry. It
operates a total of four U 20 units
fitted out with the Hiab 99 crane
body, deployed in plant construction
and as tractor rigs.
Frank Seidel is a driver with
Hera Maintenance. “I am happy
with how the Unimog drives,” he
states. It is a vital point, as his
U 20 spends 60 percent of its time
driving on the road. And he
reveals one special tip: “If you’re going to be driving a lot, in the Summer, you really need
air-conditioning”.
In fact, Frank has made a number of modifications to adapt the U 20 to his
par ticular needs. He explains: “I have had some extras put on, including an additional
step on the ladder up to the load space. The step fitted by the crane manufacturer is a
bit high.” r
