NEWS
FROM THE GENERAL
MANAGER
Here we are in the height of season, and participation
levels, as expected, are at their highest levels. February saw
some wonderful events including my favorite, the Mixed
Member Guest. This is our opportunity to really show the
club off to your guests. This year, the weather could not
have been better, so everything else fell into place perfectly.
A big thank you to all that participated and to Mary Simpson who
helped coordinate the tournament, build participation, and select the
prizes.
Congratulations to the Blutstein’s, who as the big winners, “win” the
opportunity to help us next year.
Financially speaking, through the first quarter of our fiscal year, we are
$90,444 better than budget. Our cash position as of January 31st was
$2,207K (combined operating and capital) vs. $1,900K for the same
period in 2012.
At the February 25 th Board meeting, the following significant actions
took place:
The Board acknowledged the Nominating Committee for selecting
Gretchen Kundahl, Doris Medwin, and Tom Richardson as
candidates for the Board to be seated in March.
4 members were approved for (2) membership or (2) rental.
We have some wonderful events planned for March which are explained
throughout this newsletter, so make sure you read it cover to cover.
Our Real Estate/Parade of Homes on Sunday February 10th resulted in a
contract to purchase Norm Pelletier’s condo. Our next event is planned
for Sunday March 24th. If you’re interested in participating, please
contact Donna or Sue.
Please feel free to contact me on any issue you need help on, or any
suggestion you may have for improvement! I look forward to seeing you
around the community and club!
Piper’s Landing Shares Hope for Holidays!
We have had a wonderful season so far and there’s much
more to come. There are still plenty of events to play in
if you have not had a chance to join us.
The Piper’s Landing Women’s Golf Association held its annual “Holiday Sharing” drive, raising $2,605 to
help House of Hope families this Christmas.
PLWGA chairman Michelle Maguire and tournament chairwoman Lorraine Cardarelli set March up a festive 1 & 2
Thanksgiving tree in the Piper’s Landing clubhouse that was decorated with ornament Men's tags Club made Champion
by the
association’s secretary, Linda Harlan. Piper’s Landing residents could take a tag off the tree, fill it out and
give it to the club’s cashier to provide a donation to House of Hope.
March 4 & 5
Ladies' 18
In addition to this outpouring of holiday spirit, residents at Piper’s Landing Yacht & Country Member/Member
Club support
House of Hope year-round in many ways:
March 6 & 9
• Members are encouraged through the community’s newsletter and TV channel to give White to House Hats
of
Hope. Boxes are set up in the locker rooms to collect donations of food – a method Member/Member
that delivered
more than 500 pounds of food this year.
March 9
• Piper’s Landing resident Elaine Matts is a House of Hope board member, food pantry Ladies' volunteer, Member/Guest
and
chairwoman for the “Hearts for Hope” Fashion Show, Luncheon and Auction. This Doubles fund-raising Invitational
event
will be held 11:30 a.m., Feb. 11, 2011 at Mariner Sands Country Club in Stuart.
March 11
• For the second consecutive year, Piper’s Landing will be the host of House of Hope’s Annual Golf
Mixed Member/Member
Tournament of Hope, on April 29, 2011.
March 14, 15 & 16
House of Hope is a nonprofit agency that provides food, clothing, case management and emergency financial
assistance to Martin County people in need. The agency is Martin County’s largest Men's provider Invitational
of food to
the hungry, and serves as a safety net for hundreds of families, working people and senior March citizens 18 who are
struggling through hard times.
Congratulations to Morry and Suki Blutstein for
winning the 2013 Mixed Member Guest. The weather was perfect
for the event and the golf was even better.
The ladies’ tee box on #14 will be moved back during regular play
to help the tee box heal. If we have a major event or championship,
then the tee box will be on the forward tee. We apologize for the
inconvenience.
When playing on the course, please leave it in the condition that
you found it. Rake bunkers, fix ball marks and fill divots. This will
ensure the course will be in the best playing condition.
Golf Tip:
When aligning for a golf shot, focus on your shoulders and hips
being in line with the target. This will ensure that you are properly
aligned for your shot.
In general the trees around the golf course are doing well. The
continual rains have been hard on our trees, shrubs and grass. We
have treated the bougainvilleas with fertilizer and fungicides.
Michelle Maguire delivers the check to House of Hope executive director Patrick One Slattery Day in Member/Guest
the festive
setting of the agency’s resale store in Stuart.
Soon we will be applying root drenching insecticides and
preventative white fly applications to many of the trees in an
attempt to combat the effects of the excessive rain.
The arborist was specifically asked to check the large oak on hole
March 20 & 23
10 and the Tabebuia on hole 9. The oak tree on hole 10 is doing
White Hats Championship
well. The tree on hole 9 has a split which has been monitored.
March 20 & 27
Unfortunately the split has recently enlarged past the acceptable
Par Tee Niners Club
threshold. A “bolting” of the split has been performed and the
Championship
tree will continue to be monitored.
BOOK
NOTES
BY SUSAN FARRELL
“A good book is the precious life-blood of a master-spirit,
embalmed and treasured up on purpose to a life beyond life”. John Milton
Featured Books for January
Flight Behavior by Barbara Kingsolver
A charming, beautifully crafted story, rife with similes and metaphors, by the author of the Bean Trees.
Kingsolver addresses climate change, faith, ecology, and other social issues in a colorful section of
Appalachia.
Thomas Jefferson: The Act of Power by Jon Meacham
A biography of our third President, highlighting our
need to understand Jefferson to be able to understand
America. A celebration of Jefferson’s skills as a practical
politician. One of the twenty best page turners during
this past holiday season, according to the Stuart News
Book review.
Sweet Tooth by Ian McEwan
A literary novel that’s a scintillating spy story with a
female protagonist written from the male view point by
the award winning author of Atonement. It's worth
reading through the political philosophies of the early
70’s in Great Britain to reach a spectacular conclusion.
WELCOMING
LORI
MOYNIHAN
Next time you are in the office, stop by and give Lori Moynihan a nice warm
welcome. Lori will be taking Pat Pierce's place as Office Manager, while Pat
enjoys retirement.
Lori was born and raised in western New York, so she really appreciates the nice
warm Florida weather.
She's a graduate of St. Bonaventure University. Her life experience has been wide ranging. She
spent 15 years in the U.S. Navy, both active duty and reserve. The Military Sealift Command,
Atlantic in which she served was the first unit recalled to active duty for Desert Storm. Lori left
the military as a Commander.
For 20 years, Lori worked as the Director of Sales & Design for a new home construction
company in Princeton, NJ.
She relocated to Florida last September to be near family and is the mother of 2 adult daughters.
Lori is very excited to be a part of the Piper's Landing staff and is looking forward to serving the
community.
First, a calendar change:
Dr. Paul Forage from IRSC will give his presentation, “Terrorism and the U. S. National Security”
on Monday, March 18 at 10:30 AM. All Piper's members, (men and women) are invited to learn
more about this timely and important subject.
Second:
Ari Schwartz’s February 18 presentation on Cyber Security was well received.
And finally, a progress report:
We’ve had 50 to 60 attendees at each of our first two presentations. That’s a good beginning, but
we hope more members and their guests will choose to attend our coming sessions. We need a
strong show of interest to attract high level speakers.
On April 15, Maggie Hurchalla will make the final presentation of our first season. She will be
talking about efforts to restore the Everglades and protect the St. Lucie River, a subject of
importance to everyone living on the Treasure Coast.
We are making plans for our second season, which will begin next fall. On November 11, we will
have a presentation about the ins and outs of the new Health Care Law. In January, when we’ll all
be thinking about filing tax returns for 2013, we’ll hear about the many changes to the tax laws and
how they will impact each of us. Please let us have your ideas about other subjects you’d like to see
on the schedule.
Please join us!!
