51 Panasonic. Initiatives to Conserve Biodiversity. http://
panasonic.net/eco/communication/biodiversity/
In February 2010, Panasonic created the Panasonic Group
Green Procurement Guidelines for Wood to conserve biodiversity
and sustainable resource usage after thorough consultations
with the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) Japan. The
Guidelines divides various wood and wooden materials that
may be procured into three categories: Priority procurement
(Category 1), Acceptable procurement (Category 2), and Avoiding
procurement (Category 3). The survey concerning Green
Procurement targeted for procurement in fiscal 2010 revealed the
total amount of wood and wooden materials to be approximately
440,000 m3. Out of these, those in Category 1 accounted for 47%,
Category 2 51%, and Category 3 2%. We will further increase the
proportion of Categories 1 and 2, while decreasing Category 3.
52 Ta Ann’s major international customers are also increasingly
seeking timber products that meet the more stringent FSC
certification criteria. Panasonic Electric Works Co. Ltd., for
example, have introduced green procurement guidelines
for wood to increase the share of eco-friendly wood in their
wood consumption. The procurement guidelines were
prepared in consultation with World Wildlife Fund Japan.
According to the guidelines, wood products are classified into
three groups. The first group comprises FSC certified and recovered
(recycled) wood products. The second group covers wood products
certified under other certification schemes. All other wood products
for which legality cannot be confirmed fall into the third group.
Panasonic’s target for 2011 is to procure wood products only from
FSC certified sources and from recovered wood (first group).
Ta Ann’s involvement in the logging of native forests in
Tasmania – which has not been assessed for nor attained
44
certification under FSC – means that the company’s products
will not be able to attain the standards of environmental
management increasingly expected by major customers.
65 Whilst this message is important, the matter is much more complex
as plantations will often lead to loss of biodiversity, abuse of
customary rights as well as other ethical and environmental issues
