Can you believe that we are already into the final
round of the season! It doesn’t seem that long ago
that we were launching a bold new competition, yet
here we are with the finals on our doorstep.
This week sees a full dress rehearsal of the first
weekend of the NEAFL Eastern Conference finals,
with the Sydney Swans taking on Ainslie, and the
GWS GIANTS hosting Eastlake.

to be a fantastic few weeks of footy across all
grades. This week for the first time, we have taken
a women’s semi final to Wagga in recognition of the
Riverina Lions finishing in first place.
The final game of the round is Queanbeyan vs.
Tuggeranong, with Belconnen having the bye after
notching their second win of the year last week.
I’d like to take this opportunity to invite all footy
followers in the region to our Gala Presentation
Evening which will encompass the Mulrooney
Medal, to be held at the Hellenic Club on Wednesday
7 September. This promises to be a great night, with
AFL NSW/ACT General Manager Tom Harley our
special guest. We have introduced two new awards
this year, Mark of the Year and Goal of the Year.
These awards are sure to be very entertaining on
volunteers. You are crucial to your clubs, your
players and the League. To that end I would like
to thank all the AFL Canberra volunteers who
contribute their skill and time in various ways
and means throughout the year. This includes the
tribunal, video review panel, appeals board, the
league investigator, umpires observers, the Female
Football Advisory Committee, the Junior Advisory
Committee, as well as the ACT representative staff. I
would like to pay special tribute to another group of
very important volunteers, the AFL Canberra Board
of Directors led by chairman Gerard Rees.
