IRELAND AND CORK 

IRELAND is situated on the western edge of Europe. It is an island of great beauty with rugged mountains, blue 

lakes, ancient castles, long sandy beaches and picturesque harbours. The climate is mild and temperate throughout the

With a population of 4 million people, Ireland enjoys one of the cleanest environments in Europe. Its unspoilt 

countryside provides an excellent setting for leisure pursuits such as hiking, cycling, golfing and horse-riding. 

The Irish are relaxed, friendly, spontaneous, hospitable and have a great love of conversation. This is reflected in the 

impact the Irish have had on world literature. Ireland is renowned for writers such as Jonathan Swift, Oscar Wilde, James 

Joyce, as well as four Nobel Prize winners, W.B. Yeats, G.B. Shaw, Samuel Beckett and Seamus Heaney. 

Irish Traditional Music captures the heritage and tradition of Ireland and has made a substantial and influential 

contribution to world music. Contemporary groups such as U2, The Corrs, Enya, The Cranberries and many others have 

also taken their inspiration from Irish Music. 

While maintaining traditional values, Ireland has gone through a period of considerable economic growth and change 

in recent years. With more than half of the population under 30 years of age, the country is vibrant with energy, vitality 

and creativity. Despite its increasing urbanisation, Ireland has remained a safe and welcoming country.

CORK is situated in the beautiful south of Ireland. It is the country’s second city and has a population of 160,000. A 

prosperous commercial and banking centre, Cork is a beautiful city to wander around, with its remarkable charm and 

unique atmosphere created by 19th century narrow lanes and markets. Built on an island between the two main 

channels of the River Lee, Cork is a city of hills and steps, quays and bridges, Georgian houses, spires and pedestrian 

walkways. 

Cork and its region have a rich archaeological, cultural and literary heritage. Renowned for its art, music, literature and 

craft, the city’s unique character was recognised in its selection as the European Capital of Culture in 2005. Cork annually 

hosts international festivals of Film, Jazz, Folk Dance and Choral Music. Visitors to Cork enjoy the exciting entertainment

Personalised Approach to Learning 

To individualise your learning experience, you complete a needs 

analysis questionnaire, which allows us to integrate your objectives 

into the course content. Our successful learner-centred approach to teaching allows you to achieve your goals. 

Teachers focus on practical communication and learning skills and encourage you to participate actively in the 

process of learning. Pair and group work ensure that you have many opportunities to practise speaking and listening 

in a stimulating and supportive learning environment. You have a progress test and a personal tutorial with your 

principal teacher each week. As an extension of our personalised approach to learning, a member of the academic 

team is present in the study room to help and advise you.

Courses are held at seven levels from Beginner to Advanced. You can take our online test at 

www.corklanguagecentre.ie and check your current level with our level descriptors in this brochure. The small 

number of students per class ensures effective teaching with the flexibility to meet your individual needs in a 

dynamic and friendly atmosphere. There is a special programme of study at each level and our grading system 

enables you to move to a higher level when the first programme has been completed.

Administration Team 

Our friendly and caring team has many years’ experience of working with 

students from different countries, cultures and age groups. They ensure you 

have the support you need from the moment you enrol. You receive your 

arrival details and information about your accommodation two weeks before 

travelling to Cork. During your course, our administrators are always available 

to assist you and answer any questions. A telephone number is provided to 

ensure you have twenty-four hour support. 

Accommodation 

Our experienced Accommodation Advisors ensure you settle in your 

accommodation. They are available to help you with all matters relating to 

your accommodation and welfare. Homes are carefully selected to ensure a 

comfortable and caring environment. Our homestays and apartments are 

constantly monitored to guarantee that the highest standards are maintained. 

Social Programme 

We organise a varied social programme to give you the opportunity to 

practise your language skills while making friends from other language 

backgrounds. You can choose from a wide range of cultural activities, social 

events and excursions. The Social Programme Organiser provides extensive 

information to help you choose the right activities. 

Insurance and Health Care 

We strongly recommend that you arrange your own insurance or that you 

take out the insurance offered by Cork Language Centre International to 

cover cancellation and curtailment of your period of study due to illness or 

accident. Medical expenses and loss of personal property are also covered. 

Students from countries within the European Union are entitled to free 

medical treatment under the National Health Service (except for nonemergency 

hospital treatment). 

Visa 

You may need a student visa if you are a citizen of a non-EU country. You can 

check if you need a visa and visa guidelines with your nearest Irish Embassy 

or on our website.

all countries. Our excellent nationality mix varies with the time of year. 

Students come from all over the world. Almost 60% of students come from 

Europe, 20% from Asia, 8% from Eastern Europe, 5% from South America, 4% 

from the Middle East and the remainder from the rest of the world.

Academic Team 

Our teachers are selected for their high level of qualifications, experience and motivation. They are 

university graduates who are qualified to teach English as a Foreign Language. They have the 

experience and expertise needed to ensure that courses are productive and tailored to your 

individual needs, your interests and your objectives. The quality of the teaching team is maintained 

through ongoing professional development under the guidance of our dedicated academic 

management team. We organise regular in-house training workshops and provide financial support 

for teachers to pursue external training courses. 

First Day of your Course 

On the first morning, your level and needs are extensively assessed. The different components of 

the test allow us to establish your current level of English. 

After your test, our orientation and introduction session gives you practical advice on studying with 

us and living in Cork. The session provides you with the opportunity to ask any questions you may 

have about your stay. We also inform you about our exciting social and cultural programme and 

encourage you to participate in order to maximise your learning experience. The Cork Language 

Centre International information guide helps you to make the most of your stay. 

After the orientation session, you are informed of your level and join an appropriate class with 

students of similar English language ability. 

On Monday afternoon, there is a walking tour of Cork to familiarise you with your new 

surroundings. 

Language Counselling 

You receive invaluable guidance on learning and communication skills during your language 

counselling sessions. You can ask for advice on overall language development and request extra 

work in any area of language. Your counsellor provides advice on independent learning techniques 

and can help you to select a suitable examination. 

Certificate of Achievement 

On completing a course, you receive a Cork Language Centre International certificate which states 

the level you have achieved and the length of your course.

The Standard Course focuses on practical communication skills 

with the emphasis on speaking and listening. Reading and writing 

activities provide you with opportunities to interact with other 

students. Vocabulary, idioms and grammar are practised in 

interesting and stimulating ways to achieve fluency. The 

stimulating syllabus includes fascinating activities that develop 

your understanding of Irish life through the use of television 

recordings and newspapers.

The Intensive Course follows the same programme as the Standard Course during the morning. The six 

afternoon hours focus on developing communication skills. Task-based learning gives you regular and 

structured opportunities to speak while practising the skills and language you need to use in everyday 

life. 

Business Component 

At certain times of the year, the Intensive Course is available with an afternoon business component. 

The six afternoon hours focus on developing the vocabulary and communication skills required in 

business contexts. Topics covered include telephoning, meetings and discussions, presentations, 

negotiating and socialising. 

You must have at least an intermediate level of English to attend the Business Course.

Qualifications in English are essential in today’s competitive 

world. The best way to demonstrate your level of English is by 

obtaining an internationally recognised qualification. Cork 

Language Centre International is one of the leading schools in 

Ireland in the preparation of EFL examination candidates. We 

know what is required to ensure that you pass your examination. 

Our experience is reflected in the consistently high level of success 

our students have achieved since 1975. 

You receive advice and guidance on the choice of an appropriate 

examination for your level of English and your career objectives. 

You have a personal tutorial with your principal teacher each 

week to monitor and review your progress. You complete sample 

examination papers under examination conditions to provide you 

with the best preparation possible. 

At the end of your course, you have the skills and knowledge to 

successfully complete each component of the examination.

The highly intensive Cambridge Courses are designed to prepare 

you for the five components of the examinations (reading, 

writing, grammar, listening and speaking). Prior to arrival, you do 

a pre-test so that you can make an informed decision on which 

examination course to join. Our teachers are experienced 

Cambridge examiners with many years of experience in 

examination preparation. 

You benefit from a combination of examination techniques and 

general language study. Supplementary examination practice 

takes place free of charge three afternoons per week.

working environment. The test has two components: listening and

As a busy professional, you need to make the best use of your time. Our Executive and Professional Course is designed 

to enable you to achieve maximum progress in a limited time frame. Prior to arrival, you complete a needs analysis 

questionnaire which helps us to integrate your individual needs and objectives when designing the course. 

Your course focuses on the essential language skills required to perform in today’s competitive and global business 

environment. The small group size allows our expert tutors to maximise your participation in a focused and dynamic 

learning setting. The international mix of participants provides you with the perfect forum to gain valuable 

knowledge and raises cross-cultural awareness. To achieve optimum language exposure, you also go to lunch with a 

tutor.

The Executive and Professional Course develops the communication skills you need to conduct professional tasks with 

complete confidence. It is highly interactive and based on extensive use of problem solving, practical role-plays and 

realistic case studies. Based on your needs, the course may include telephoning, discussions, conducting meetings, 

making presentations, e-commerce, dealing with facts and figures, interviewing, negotiating, describing trends, as well 

as a choice of stimulating topics such as sales and marketing, human resources, quality management and cross-cultural 

issues. 

During the four afternoon hours, the course focuses on task-based practice related to the areas covered in the 

morning. 

You can supplement your Executive and Professional Course with individual tuition. 

If your level of English is lower than intermediate, you are redirected to a Standard or Intensive Course with an 

appropriate adjustment of fees. 

INDIVIDUAL TUITION 

Any number of hours 

Individual tuition offers the most rapid, relevant and cost-effective form of language training. To maximise success, 

you are requested to complete a detailed needs analysis questionnaire prior to arrival. This helps us to include your 

individual needs and objectives when designing the course. Your tutors can focus on general English or on the 

language skills you require for your profession or studies. 

You can choose any number of hours to suit your specific needs. You can start any Monday and continue for any 

number of weeks.

Cork Language Centre International is proud of the outstanding reputation established by our teacher 

training department over many years. 

We have been involved in teacher training since 1984 and are an approved centre for the RELSA 

Certificate in Teaching English as a Foreign Language. We have developed a successful learner-centred 

approach to teaching, based on communicative methodologies. 

Professional Development Course for Teachers of English 





Monday to Friday 09.00 -12.55hrs + 14.00-16.00hrs (four afternoons)

The Professional Development Course for Teachers of English aims to meet your professional needs in all 

aspects of English language teaching. You complete a needs analysis questionnaire which helps our 

highly qualified team of teacher trainers to design the programme to suit your objectives and interests. 

The course provides a balanced programme of methodology, classroom resourcing, current theory, 

cultural exposure and language enrichment. As a teacher of English, you can expect a challenging 

learning experience which updates and refreshes your teaching. The course is practical and provides you 

with new activities, new skills and new techniques. 

Seminars and workshops 

Based on your needs, the stimulating course content may include: language awareness and analysis, 

classroom management and lesson planning, teaching the skills of listening, speaking, reading and 

writing, testing and evaluation, error correction, materials development and current issues in 

methodology. 

Irish life and culture 

The afternoon sessions complement the academic component of the programme. Through a series of 

visits to places of historical interest as well as lectures and workshops, you gain an overview of the 

culture, the history and the education system of Ireland.

FOUNDATION PROGRAMME 

To study for a third-level course at an English-speaking university or college, you 

need to prepare for academic life and meet the requirements for entry to 

undergraduate or postgraduate courses. 

The Foundation Programme provides comprehensive and stimulating English 

language training and develops the skills which enable you to successfully 

complete third-level studies. Our counsellors advise you on your academic 

needs, suitable degree courses and help you with the application and 

interview process. During the foundation programme, you can take the 

internationally recognised IELTS examination required to gain entry to the 

third-level course of your choice. 

Cork Language Centre International cooperates with many third-level 

institutions including University College Cork, Cork Institute of 

Technology and Waterford Institute of Technology. 

At the end of the course, you have a high level of communication 

skills and cultural knowledge, which allows you to integrate fully into 

college life. The friendships you make and the cultural experiences 

you enjoy are an integral part of the programme.

PROFESSIONAL WORK EXPERIENCE / INTERNSHIP PROGRAMME 

With increased competition in job markets, it is beneficial to learn English 

in the workplace, as well as in the classroom. 

Working in Ireland gives you valuable experience, increases your 

awareness of international business culture and broadens your 

employment prospects. It is an exciting and challenging way to improve 

your English. 

To participate in the programme, you must have an intermediate level of 

English and choose one of our courses for a minimum period of four 

weeks. Your teachers focus on practical communication skills with the 

emphasis on speaking and listening. The language course enables you to

Work placements cover a wide range of professional areas including 

tourism, hotels and catering, retailing, office administration, marketing

The objectives of the programme are educational and work experience is 

unpaid. The work you do depends on your level of education and 

qualifications, your skills and experience and your level of English.

Accommodation Advisors. During your stay, you complete evaluation 

questionnaires on your homestay or your apartment, which help us to ensure

As a more mature business executive or professional person, you may prefer to

If you want to be more independent, select one of our comfortable modern 

apartments. The contemporary apartment complex is located 5 minutes’ walk 

from Cork Language Centre International and the city centre. You have a single 

room in an apartment which you share with one or two students. Each 

apartment has a fully-equipped kitchen, a sitting room with a television, a 

bathroom and either two or three bedrooms.

Enjoy Cork Language Centre International’s social life and make friends from all

Cork is a welcoming city to all its visitors. There is an ongoing programme of 

entertainment including the Jazz festival, the Choral festival, the Film festival and 

many weekend festivals. 

You have the opportunity to experience and familiarise yourself with Irish 

culture while in Cork. From traditional Irish pubs to modern European 

nightclubs, from cosy theatres to multiplex cinemas, you can improve your 

English while enjoying a varied social life. 

Cork is an ideal location for sports enthusiasts whether you are interested in 

football, golf, cycling, tennis, sailing, fishing, windsurfing, canoeing or other 

sports. 

Cork Language Centre International organises many social and cultural activities. 

You might want to learn Irish dancing and practise your new skills at a traditional 

Irish dance known as a "céili". You can join our experienced guides on excursions 

to the beautiful south and west, visit Blarney Castle where, according to the 

legend, the magic stone gives you the gift of eloquence or become a qualified 

Irish whiskey taster at Jameson distillery.
