Our TeachersSchoolThe school is housed in a typically <strong>English</strong>, beautiful Victorianbuilding whose bright and spacious rooms are an idealenvironment for students from all over the world to get together for<strong>English</strong> language learning. The school has a very welcoming andfriendly atmosphere and we do our best to make every student’sstay as successful and enjoyable as possible.ClassroomsThe school has 12 bright and airy classrooms all appropriatelyequipped for effective language teaching.ReceptionOur reception is open from Monday to Friday between 8.30am and17.00pm. Our staff are very approachable and always available tohelp students with their enquiries regarding tuition,accommodation, excursions or any other issues.CafeteriaThe school has a lovely cafeteria located in the school residence. Itis open from Monday to Friday for all students from 8.30am to13.30pm. We serve a variety of hot and cold lunches and drinks andsnacks in all breaks. It is a great opportunity to socialise with otherstudents and practice the <strong>English</strong> learned in lessons. There iscomfortable indoor seating for colder days and also a beautifulgarden for the summer.ComputersOur computer room is equippedwith 12 computers all connected tobroadband internet. We offer freeuse of computers from 8.30am to5.00pm. The school also has freewireless internet throughout, whichstudents with their own laptopscan connect to.GardenThe school has a beautiful garden where students can socialiseduring breaks and lunchtime. <strong>In</strong> the summer we also regularly useit to hold barbecues in for all students.ResidenceThe school has its own student residence, which is available allyear. It is two doors from the school building and offers students avery convenient alternative to homestay accommodation.All our permanent teachers hold universitydegrees as well as recognised TEFLqualifications (at least CELTA, some hold themore advanced DELTA qualification). Adult <strong>Courses</strong>January to December – ages 16+General <strong>English</strong>Our general <strong>English</strong> courses run all year round and students can start any Monday. Thelength of the course is up to the student. Students can study from a minimum of twoweeks, up to a long-term course of three, six or even twelve months. We offer a choice of15 or 25 hours of General <strong>English</strong> per week. All lessons are 60 minutes.LevelsAll students are given a level test on their first Monday and will be placed at theappropriate level. Most weeks we offer six levels including elementary, pre-intermediate,intermediate, upper-intermediate, advanced and advanced plus.Please note that we do not offer group classes for beginners. Beginners are required totake one-to-one lessons until they reach the right level to join our elementary group.SyllabusAll levels have an ongoing eight-week syllabus with anattainment test at the end, after which students then move upa level, if they have passed the test.The 15-hour course offers grammar-based lessons linked to avariety of topics. Different skills are also integrated from thebeginning and throughout the lessons.to different social contexts. Classroom material and activitiesare often authentic and reflect real-life situations anddemands. Skills are integrated from the beginning; a givenactivity might involve reading, speaking, listening andperhaps also writing.Maximum Class SizeThe maximum class size is 14.The 25-hour course, in addition to what the15-hour course covers, also offers skills-based lessons in theafternoons. They give students the opportunity for furtherpractice in speaking, reading, listening and writing.MethodologyOur method of teaching is the communicative approach. Thecontent of the course includes social functions, not justlinguistic structures. Students regularly work in pairs orengage in role-play to adjust their use of the target languageOne-To-One TuitionWe offer one-to-one tuition all year round. One-to-onecourses are tailor-made for you. Students get the closestpossible attention from their own personal tutor. One-toonetuition can be taken as a unique course, or in additionto a group course. Students decide on the number oflessons they would like to take.Learning MaterialAll learning material is provided. Our Social ActivitiesThe School’s Afternoon Summer Leisure Programme<strong>In</strong> the summer (see registration form for dates) we offer an afternoon leisureprogramme that can be joined for one week or more. It can be booked incombination with the 15-hour course. It is a ‘cultural’ leisure programme that offersstudents the opportunity to explore <strong>London</strong> with a group of Select <strong>English</strong> studentsand a member of Select <strong>English</strong> staff. A weekly travelcard and a full-day excursion onSaturday are included in the programme fees. Residential AccommodationSelect <strong>English</strong> owns a large spacious Victorian house used as our schoolresidence. The residence is open all year round and can be booked from January toDecember in combination with an <strong>English</strong> language course for a minimum of twoweeks.LocationThe residence is conveniently located two doors from the main school building inCrystal Palace. It takes students less than a minute to reach the school from theresidence.RoomsThe residence has 7 single and 2 double rooms. All rooms have central heating.Showers and ToiletsMost rooms have en-suite showers. For the rooms without showers, communalshowers are located on each floor. There are also shared toilets on each floor.<strong>In</strong>ternet and TVThe residence has wireless internet throughout. Students who bring their ownlaptop can access the internet for free 24 hours a day. All rooms have a TV.WardenThere is a Warden who lives in the residence and who is responsible for thestudents’ welfare during their stay.MealsBreakfast is included in the residence fees and is provided every day in the schoolcafeteria. Homestay AccommodationWe can also arrange for students to stay in local homestay accommodation duringtheir studies. Staying in homestay accommodation can be an excellent way to get toknow the culture better as well as providing more opportunities to practice <strong>English</strong>.All our homestay accommodation is chosen and regularly visited by our own schoolstaff. Our Accommodation Officer is always available to deal with any problems thatmay occur in a quick and efficient manner. After arrival students can always speak toour Accommodation Officer regarding any homestay issues.LocationThe location of our school in Crystal Palace, a residential part of <strong>London</strong>, is ideal forhomestay accommodation. We are in a unique position to offer homestayaccommodation within walking distance of the school. Professional <strong>In</strong>ternshipProgrammeThe professional internship programme is an unpaidwork placement in a UK company. This programme isideal for students and young professionals who want toimprove their <strong>English</strong> in a working environment and gainpractical knowledge of a certain UK business sector. It ismost suitable for students who have studied or worked,or are planning on studying/working in the requested areaof business. Please contact us for more informationregarding the application procedure.AgeCandidates should be between 18 and 32 years old. Oldercandidates will only be accepted in exceptional circumstances.Preceding <strong>English</strong> <strong>Language</strong> CourseThe internship has to be preceded by at least a four-week <strong>English</strong>course at Select <strong>English</strong>. Non-EU candidates have to study at least thesame amount of weeks as their internship.Length of <strong>In</strong>ternshipThe internship should be a minimum of 4 weeks. There is no maximumlength. However, for placements over 4 months an extra charge applies.Sectors of PlacementsMany business sectors are covered, such as marketing, architecture,business administration, fashion, engineering, import/export, law,advertising, PR and others.Level of <strong>English</strong>Students should have reached an intermediate to upper-intermediatelevel of <strong>English</strong>.Location of Placement and AccommodationMost placements are in <strong>London</strong> and, if convenient, candidates can stayin our school residence or homestay accommodation for the duration oftheir internship. Otherwise we can assist in finding alternativeaccommodation.
