2011 SEASON PREVIEW Carter is expected to anchor the third base position and returner Grant Brasher is the projected starter at first base, but the middle infield will consist of players new to the Miner roster this spring. Nick Burke, a transfer from John Wood Community College, figures to see playing time at both shortstop and third base, while freshman Clint Wobbe will play either at second base or shortstop. Freshman Eric Van Dyke will also be in competition for a starting role at the middle infield positions. Drew Davenport, who has started for a better part of the last two seasons behind the plate, returns to that role and will share the catching duties with newcomer Josh Caffrey, a transfer from Marshalltown Community College in Iowa. They will catch a staff that, similar to that of the position players, is a fairly even mix of veterans and newcomers. The Miners return five starting pitchers with experience, headed by junior Zack Gronek who spent the entire 2010 season coming out of the bullpen – making a school record 27 appearances during the season. Gronek went 2-2 with a 4.61 earned run average in that role after spending most of his freshman season as a starter, but is expected to move back into the starting role for the most part this spring. Sophomore pitcher Chris Bowe is one of many pitchers competing for starting roles in 2011. MINER BASEBALL Among the other returners to the starting rotation are senior Nick Johnson, sophomores Chris Bowe (2-2 as a freshman) and Kyle Robertson and junior Drew Pyles, who is expected to come out of the bullpen this season. Alex Dunn, who has been a reliever throughout his first three seasons at S&T, is expected to join the starting rotation this year along with newcomers John Auble, who recorded a 13-2 record in his final two seasons at Lutheran South High School and Drew Schrader, who was a top pitcher last season at Troy Buchanan High School. In the bullpen, the Miners are expecting to get contributions from Pyles and returners Nolan Korn, Matt Walker, Harry Dunsford and Mike Bush. 12 Will Morrison led Missouri S&T in hitting in 2010 and broke the school record with 75 hits.
2011 MINER PROFILES Sam Adams 44 Mike Baker 20 Outfielder 6-0, 200, So. Forsyth, Mo. Forsyth HS Outfielder 5-9, 170, Fr. Olathe, Kan. Olathe East HS 2010: Emerged as one of the Miners’ top hitters during his first season at Missouri S&T…batted .338 with a home run and 26 runs batted in…hit his homer in the second game of the series against Southern Indiana, then drove in a season-high four runs the following day in the Miners’ win over eventual NCAA Division II national champions… had 13 multiple-hit games, including four three-hit outings during the season…drove in at least two runs on seven occasions…recorded a nine-game hitting streak during the year. HIGH SCHOOL: Earned all-state honors following the 2009 season at Forsyth High School, his third such all-state honor, after a strong senior season at the plate where he hit .517…batted .506 with three home runs, 40 runs batted in and 15 stolen bases as a junior after hitting over .500 as a sophomore, while striking out only one time in 87 at-bats…drove in 102 runs over the last two seasons of his prep career. PERSONAL: Son of Stephen Adams...majoring in metallurgical or electrical engineering. John Auble 30 Pitcher 6-1, 195, Sr. St. Louis, Mo. Lutheran South HS HIGH SCHOOL: Played in the outfield at Olathe East High School... team finished the 2010 season with a record of 11-11. PERSONAL: Son of Craig and Kelley Baker…majoring in mechanical engineering. Torey Bohan 8 Catcher 5-11, 180, Sr. Bismarck, N.D. St. Mary’s Central HS/Jamestown College 2010: Appeared in two games and started in one…had an RBI which came against Southern Arkansas. AT JAMESTOWN: Played at Jamestown College as a catcher. HIGH SCHOOL: Was a two-time all-state selection at St. Mary’s Central High School in Bismarck, N.D. as a catcher. PERSONAL: Son of Tim and Tammy Bohan...majoring in electrical engineering. HIGH SCHOOL: Recorded an 8-1 record and one save with a 1.07 earned run average as a senior at Lutheran High School South… earned first-team all-conference and second-team all-state honors, as well as second-team all-metro St. Louis laurels…was nominated to play in the Missouri-Illinois all-star game…as a senior, struck out 38 hitters in 52 1/3 innings of work…opposing hitters batted just .155 against him in 2010…was 5-1 as a junior with a 1.22 earned run average and four saves…fanned 30 in 46 innings.
